City Council approves 46 unit apartment complex Neighbors fume over increased traffic and potential parking issues

lans have been filed and approved at Tillamook City Hall to turn the vacant 1-acre lot, located at 400 Ocean Place Tillamook, into a quality housing solution for Tillamook residents. The 11-million-dollar project, called Nestucca Ocean Apartments, will consist of two, three-story buildings and one, single story building that will host a total of 46 living units and a community space. A mix of 10 one-bedroom and 36 two-bedroom dwellings, the complex will be 33,190 square feet in total. The apartment parking lot will provide 36 resident spaces. Locals can expect to see the project to start approximately late May 2022 and be completed in the Fall of 2023. Notably, there were a number of disgruntled neighbors not thrilled about the new development. Their concerns mainly stemmed from the added street traffic and parking issues that it will bring. A number of people living near the tobe apartments feel a smaller apartment building would have been a better choice for the neighborhood. “I am not against a new apartment, we do need housing, but it should not come at the detriment of a neighborhood.” said Pat Kehr, a resident in the area. According to the transportation and parking study completed by Lancaster Mobley Transportation Consultants. Findings showed that the proposed development is expected to generate an increase of 18 morning peak hour trips, 22 evening peak hour trips, and of 272 average weekday trips. No significant trends or crash patterns were identified at any of the study intersections. In effect, the current situation will be able to safely handle traffic pro-

Despite any of the local’s street parking concerns, according to the parking analysis from Lancaster Mobley, the on-street parking demand from the proposed development states it will have a minor effect on the available on-street parking supply. The development will include the construction of 36 parking spaces, despite a city requirement of zero.
More than 50 percent of the onstreet parking supply will still be vacant overnight and available for residents and visitors to the surrounding neighborhood. Therefore, sufficient on-street parking will be available with the proposed development. “This is a beneficial development in our community that will attract new people and events to our town which will lead to a better quality of
life for everyone.” Nathan George, Tillamook city manager said. According to the plans from Green Light Development in partnership with Home First Development, the property will allow for all 46 units to qualify for Federal and State affordable housing programs, addressing the local affordable housing crisis. The company hopes to appoint a local property management company and is in search of

he Tillamook Chamber of Commerce on Saturday raised nearly $75,000 for community programming, introduced the new Tillamook Chamber Community Foundation and honored the 2022 Community Award recipients at “A Night in Greece,” the 80th Annual Tillamook Chamber Community Awards Banquet and Auction. The event brought 350 community members together in-person for the Chamber’s largest fundraiser of the year. “The money raised through the banquet and auction allow us to continue to support the community throughout the year with programming like the June Dairy Parade, Mornings on Main Street, Sip + Shop and so much more,” said Chamber Executive Director Justin Aufdermauer. “A large portion of the funds raised at the banquet will also serve as the financial basis for

One of the first Foundation initiatives is Young Pros Tillamook, a young professionals program set to launch in February. “Young Pros Tillamook will provide a network of like-minded young professionals who can work together to grow personally and
professionally while they connect and engage with each other and the broader community,” Aufdermauer said. “We expect this group to help develop and keep talented, up-and-coming leaders in our local workforce.” The highlight of the banquet, though, is always the announcement of the Community Award recipients. The Chamber distributed awards in five categories: Development Project of the Year, Program of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year. n the weekly Tillamook County community update meeting, Eric Swanson from Adventist Health Tillamook said, “Over the last two weeks, cases have remained high, so the current hospital bed situation is dire.” Region 1 (Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Multnomah, Tillamook and Washington counties) has 310 adult ICU hospital beds occupied out of a total of 338 beds. This leaves 28 adult ICU beds in the region available. In addition, there are a total of 29 non-ICU hospital beds available. Swanson follows the COVID-19 updates from Peter Graven, Ph.D., director of the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Office of Advanced Analytics. According to Graven, all regions across the state are showing a rapid increase in hospitalized patients. As of January 18th, out of all

hospital patients occupying ICU beds, 25% of them are there battling COVID-19. The latest data from OHSU now predicts peak hospitalizations in Oregon to be hit February 1st. In Tillamook County, 18,430 people have already been vaccinated and 8,100 people in the county have yet to get their vaccines. If you’d like to get your COVID shot be sure to visit the health department’s vaccine clinic at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays. Vaccines, pediatric vaccines, flu and pneumonia vaccines are also available. Adventist Health Tillamook is also providing vaccines from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays at the Tillamook Medical Plaza and Women’s and Family Health. recipients and community members, selected this year’s recipients from a pool of nominations made by county residents in late 2021. More information about each award and its recipient is listed below. “There were so many amazing people, businesses, projects and programs on our list of nominations, and picking just one recipient in each category was no easy task,” said Rieger, Chamber Board vice president. “In the end, the Awards Committee relied heavily on the four criteria of the award to make its final decision. All of the recipients this year demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community, with a broad reach of benefit for so many different people in Tillamook County.”
The Awards weighs four main criteria in selecting the final recipient. Those criteria include how the nominees enhanced the quality of life in Tillamook County in 2021; who was served by the nominee’s accomplishments and how broad the demographic reach of those people is; how the nominee shows a continued commitment to the community; and what the long-term benefits of the nominee’s work are. “The Community Awards give us a chance to reflect on the year and celebrate the amazing work being done in our community that makes Tillamook County a great place to live, work and play,” Aufdermauer said.

The long-awaited grocery store opened its doors in June 2021, completing a years-long project to bring a quality yet low-cost grocery option to Tillamook County. “Owner-Operators Stephen and Tamara Tuttle fought hard and for many years to be here in Tillamook, proving their commitment to this community,” said Chamber Board President Lisa Greiner as she presented the award. Greiner added that that Tillamook Grocery Outlet serves a huge demographic of people, from locals and tourists, and from lowwage earners to high-wage earners. That broad reach of people benefited helped this project stand out to the Awards Committee, she said.
Program of the Year An award to recognize organizations, projects, events and other work that does not fall into a traditional business category, Program of the Year recognizes one program that enhances the quality of life in Tillamook County. Selecting Tillamook County Public Health as this year’s recipient was a “no brainer,” said Justin McMahan while presenting the award. “It’s hard not to recognize our nurses and public health workers for their efforts during the second year of the pandemic,” McMahan said. “While it’s their job to keep us healthy, they didn’t sign up for that job knowing anything that the last year would throw at them. And yet, they’ve stepped up to meet the challenge.” Representatives from Tillamook County Health were unable to attend the banquet, but the agency did submit a note thanking the community for its nomination. “It has, without a doubt, been one of the most challenging years that this program has ever experienced. This team of people have been working tirelessly to provide all their standard and customary services, while also providing the unprecedented local response to the global pandemic. … There is a great appreciation for the recognition that comes with being nominated,” the note said.

Citizen of the Year One of the longest running Community Awards, Citizen of the Year honors one individual who made a significant impact in Tillamook County in 2021. e have further word about the logging operation related to clearing timber for the Cape Meares Loop Road bypass. Charles Ansorge is a member of the Oceanside Water Board and passed along information they recently received. Stimson hired a contractor to harvest timber from the areas where the bypass road is to be installed. It is looking likely that Bayocean Road will be one of the routes used to haul timber out of the area, but it may be later this spring or early summer before that happens. The current plan calls for logging to begin at the south end of
the bypass and then move northward. Thanks for keeping the neighborhood posted, Charles! Mystery solved! We ran into the county sanitarian, Chris Chiola, on a walk around the neighborhood the other day and found out what is going at the northern access to Cape Meares beach. There have been standing pools of stinky, tea-colored water there; we wondered if someone’s septic field had failed. Chris had checked into that and determined it was likely a natural process at work. The lots surrounding that parking area are rather

near the south end of Cape Meares. Nature isn’t always pretty, and it doesn’t always smell good! A street sign on 2nd St. NW has been down since our last storm. I checked with Chris Laity, director of Tillamook County Public Works, as to the proper way to get repairs initiated. He says the quickest way for work to be done is by reporting it to the main office at 503-842-3419 or, second choice, by emailing pubwks@co.tillamook. or.us. The front desk gathers the information and gives the work request to the foreman. He then prioritizes the work
with other needs. Currently, the public works department has four maintenance people to maintain Cape Meares and all roads north of Hwy 6 to Clatsop County. There is a person dedicated to signs, but he is often attached to a road crew due to lack of staff. The department also looks at upgrading signs when they replace the posts. A request has been filed to address the downed 2nd St. NW sign. Thanks for this information and all the work you do, Chris and Tillamook County Public Works! Omicron ramped up in Tillamook the second half of
January. We were vaccinated and boosted; what else could we do? Well, it turns out, quite a bit. We upgraded our masks from cloth to N95; Capt. Pete shaved off his beard so the mask would fit better; we did our grocery shopping at 7 a.m., when the stores are practically empty; we canceled company visits; and we ordered take-out instead of eating in. This pandemic is a pain, for sure, but we are fortunate that for our family, to this point, it’s only been an inconvenience. So many others have lost loved ones; our hearts go out to them.

ttention gardeners! The Tillamook County Library has been distributing free seeds for years, and we love hearing the amazing success stories our patrons share with us. Locals send us photos of their gardens and tell us how thrilled they are that the library helped feed their family by providing free seeds. Over the years, we have had various suppliers for the seed packets. But because of various shortages currently happening in the world, the seed supply is not nearly as plentiful as in years past. Nevertheless, we will still be offering a good supply of these packets to our patrons, free of charge, for one week only. From February 1 - 5, we will distribute seeds as long as supplies last. Please note the distribution will only happen at the Main Library in Tillamook. Speaking of planting seeds, for the rest of the column, I would like to talk about planting a different kind of seed. Our children’s librarian, Melanie, recently shared a graphic which she borrowed from @mombrain.therapist. It was titled, “Things we model for our kids whether we realize it or not.” I’m going to share some

One of my favorite bits of advice for travelers is to practice the 2-second rule. A good visual approximation is to think the distance between two power poles.This simple act provides you with an improved line of sight; but most importantly, increased reaction time if needed. While many factors are at play in making that highway unsafe, speed is certainly a major cause. I sometimes feel I am the only one driving 55. And when passed, I will say out loud ‘So long my friend; may the end of your journey find you safe.’ In fact, were I the decision maker, I would drop the speed to 50 mph for the entire route. There is no hurry worth the price!
We live in a country that wants to throw people away. Would rather build luxury houses than affordable places. Look around the tents in the bushes and under bridges. This should not be a thing. Rather it be mental illness, drug abuse, or just misfortune they are people some of you people seems to forget that. We do better than some but have a ways to go. Maybe you should hire that “dirty person’ or maybe we need at least a job market for them. Everyone that wants to work should be able to, but yet personalities and ego get in the way we can’t have this person here, then where people are not disposable. What makes this one especially hard is our world has gone so digital that we are expected to do so much more with our devices. We pay bills, we organize our calendars online, some of us order our groceries electronically...even your library encourages you to do so much online, including placing holds, renewing items, and even reading books on the risks’ said Fauci. If you go to our own government website HIV.gov they will tell you that we spend 28 BILLION dollars a year on AIDS research and there is still no cure AND FAUCi IS STILL INVOLVED! All of us have gone to doctors, all of us have had our cars worked on, all of us have gone to dentist’s. Have we not gone and had second opinions? YES! Not all doctors agree with each other. Some have horrible bed side manners (that is part of why I quit the Dental Field), some doctors have a god syndrome is what we used to say. Why are we commanded by our own government to obey Fauci’s word and no one else’s? Are we allowed second opinions? No, we only have word of Anthony Fauci. Again, forget about Republican and Democrat. I have a question for you? How long are you going to be afraid, how long are you going to continue to wear masks which are bad for your health? aware of the basic needs of the plants, too, like sunlight and water. Let’s talk about a shade garden first as there are lots of plants that will fit into both categories: pollinator lures and part-sun to shade. Of course, hummingbirds and bees may be drawn to some of the same plants, but there are also plants that hummers especially like. And with a little bit of pre-planning, you can have blooms from May through August. Start with the spring-bloomer Dicentra spectabillis or bleeding heart. Then maybe add the blue blossoms of Phlox and Pulmonaria that will take you and your hummingbirds into late spring and early summer. Also a spring bloomer is the Aquilegia or Columbine plant. There are some native Columbines that are lovely, and native plants always do better not only growing, but attracting native pollinators. For summer shade, try one of the many Hosta available. Most bloom with white or purple flowers but there are a few that have pinkish flowers like H. ‘Frosted Raspberry’ or ‘Raspberry Sorbet.’ (Gotta love those names!) But be aware, they may be hard to track down but may be found at a specialty Hosta nursery like Seabright Gardens in Brooks, OR. Of course, we can’t forget my favorite summer-bloomer Heuchera (coral bells). The H. Dolce ‘Spearmint’ has bright pink blossoms that the hummers can’t resist. And
the silvery-green leaves with dark green veins will keep you happy, too, as they last all year even after the blooms are spent. There are other pinkish-red Heuchera like ‘Timeless Night’ and ‘Paris.’ If you are lucky enough to have a full sun garden, I can recommend Agastache, Lupines, Penstemon and Joe Pye Weed to draw bees and hummingbirds. And fuchsia! My old-fashioned fuchsias bloom from mid-summer to late winter and I almost always see hummers flitting from flower to flower. Hummingbirds seem to like the blooms that are bellshaped, but they also will draw nectar from the blossoms of Monarda (bee balm), Echinacea (coneflowers) and good, old-fashioned cosmos. Mondarda ‘Sugar Buzz Grape Gumball’ is bright purple and keeps a compact shape while still drawing in pollinators. Echinacea ‘Sombrero Baja Beauty’ is a bold red and something a little different for the garden. Since bees and butterflies like the flattops as well, maybe this is the way to go to attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Don’t overlook dahlias to draw those pollinators in late summer and early fall either. The single-flowering dahlias look very much like colorful daisies or cosmos and the bees and butterflies love them. Add to that the fact that they come in a huge variety of colors and are grown by tubers, there is probably a single-flower dahlia to suit
every taste. My favorite single-flower dahlia is the popular ‘Bishop of Llandaff.’ It has pure red blossoms and dark purple-ish leaves. This dahlia gets to be about 3 feet tall and blooms from July to October, making it a perfect addition to the garden for the pollinators. By doing a little research with some of those multitudes of seed and flower catalogs
we get in the mail this time of year – or online if you prefer - you can plan ahead for a floriferous spring and summer. The fun part about choosing appropriate plants for drawing pollinators is that the choices are lovely in themselves. By planning for the bees and butterflies, you are also planning for yourself. A win-win situation.

Thanks to Peter Starkey, the executive director of CARE, the CARE team was able to successfully partner with Tillamook Community Health Centers, The Rinehart Clinic, Animal Haven by the Sea and others to host this event. Free meals, coats, tents, sleeping bags and other survival gear were provided to individuals experiencing homelessness. Toiletries and first aid supplies were also provided along with free dental and medical assessments.
Masks were provided along with COVID-19 vaccines and testing. In addition, there was food and other supplies provided for animals in need. Feel inclined to help out community members in need? CARE is accepting donations of outerwear, boots, tarps, tents, sleeping bags, and hygiene items in new condition. Drop off at the CARE office at 2310 First Street, Tillamook. Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity receives grant from Oregon Realtors Association Chelsea Yarnell Guest Contributor The Oregon Realtors Association Home Foundation recently awarded Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity a $4,000 grant to support their current building project. “A big thank you to Oregon Realtors Association and our Tillamook Board of Realtors for a grant to increase affordable home ownership opportunities in Tillamook County,” Tillamook Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Cami Aufdermauer wrote. “Funding from the Home Foundation grant will support our current building project, a single family home in Hebo, Oregon. The [money] provided from this grant will help cover some of the cost of building materials for this home build.” The Home Foundation looks for those within Oregon communities that increase homeownership possibilities. “Tillamook Board of
Realtors works closely with Habitat for Humanity on housing issues and they have proven to be an asset in our community,” Audfermauer said. “This grant allows them to continue doing great things within our community and we are so happy they were awarded the grant this year!” Work is slated to begin on the Tillamook Habitat House in Hebo early February. “The Oregon Association of Realtors have been a consistent supporter of our local Habitat both through their financial contributions and through volunteering,” Tillamook County Board of Realtors Executive Officer Jodi King said. “Every year our local board of realtors have made a commitment to come volunteer on a worksite alongside our Habitat Families. They are providing a true partnership when it comes to increasing affordable home ownership opportunities in Tillamook County.”

irginia A. Woods passed away peacefully on November 29, 2021, at the age of 90, in Beaverton Oregon. Virginia was born to Mace & Adele Reed on April 6, 1931, in Marysville Washington. The family moved to Newport Washington in 1931, where she grew up and graduated from Newport High School in 1949. She was the youngest of three children. Virginia is preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Jesse “Bud” Woods, her parents and her two brothers Eugene & Delbert Reed. Virginia moved to Tillamook Oregon in 1960
“Habitat is very passionate about giving back to the community,” Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Coordinator Elizabeth Wipperman said. “We love having people who are willing to put in the work and are willing to learn. There’s really something for everyone. Virginia enjoyed gardening and working in her yard, especially raising her gladiolas. Over the years she and her husband enjoyed various activities such as riding their horses and raising beef cattle on their small acreage on Tone Road in Tillamook. Upon retirement, Virginia and her Husband enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and clamming trips. They were active with the Swiss Society and the Elks Club in Tillamook and enjoyed life with friends and family. Virginia is survived by her daughters Rhonda (Dodge) Ellerbroek (Hauser, Idaho), Terry (Veltri) Young, of Tenino, Washington and Sandra (Woods) Fischer of Aloha, Oregon. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. A grave side memorial will be held in the summer of 2022 in Newport Washington, where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband and parents.

The gratitude that we felt and the support from the community was overwhelming.” This year, the Community Action Team (CAT) also participated in the MLK Service Day. CAT, based out of St. Helens, provides services in Tillamook County and partners with non-profit organizations to address the causes and conditions
of poverty in Northwest Oregon. “The takeaway from the day, especially during these times, is that the community came out to support our mission, especially now more than ever, with some facilities not open because of Covid,” CAT Integrated Pest Management Coordinator Maintenance Specialist Neal Ryan Jones said. “Ultimately, it was just a great collaboration event. Pin it to win it: Mooks wrestlers expecting a strong finish to their season Ashley Tike Staff Writer Come out and support the Tillamook High School (THS) wrestling team on Friday, February 4th at 4 p.m. as they host the final three league duals of the season. Banks, Seaside, and Astoria wrestling teams will be coming to town to attempt to defeat the Mooks. THS is fighting to obtain a record 17th consecutive dual title. “We have 3 goals every
season. To finish top 4 at the classics, win a league title and bring home a trophy from the state tournament,” said assistant coach Adam Barichio. The team has already met one of their goals finishing 3rd at the Oregon wrestling Classics (dual team State Championship) held January 14th & 15th in Redmond Oregon. Leaving 2 goals left to achieve. Head coach Rex Metcalfe believes this team will be able to put a check mark by all 3
goals this year. On February 12th Wrestling Regionals will be held at Molalla High School. THS will be wrestling for their 4th regional title in a row. If they qualify at regionals, the team will be off to the State Championship at Cascade high school, February 26th. The THS girls wrestling regionals will be held February 5th at West Albany High School and girls state wrestling is February 24th at Culver High School.

It was very hilly, and very muddy, that slowed down the times. There was lots of slipping.” Bush already has her sights on next year’s competition. “I want to get top 25 at Junior Olympics because that is All-American,” she said. “And get a sub 10-minute 3k. I’ll work even harder now that I see what the competition was like, but I’m ready for it.”

Bush traveled with her father to Paris, Kentucky for the Junior Olympics race hosted on Dec. 11. “It was really exciting and at the airport the whole time I was thinking about what a great experience and how fun it would be,” Bush said. While awaiting her race, tornados tore through Kentucky. “We were pretty close,” Bush said. “We saw a very small tornado. The weather [report] said they could be coming very close.” Luckily, Bush and her fellow competitors remained safe and were able to race. “There was a delay of race though,” Bush said. “ It was

Shorthanded Lady Pirates suffer loss to Vernonia Mike Weber For The Herald
In what has been an up and down season, the NeahKah-Nie High Lady Pirates would probably rather forget about their 50-21 loss to the Vernonia High Loggers in a Class 2A Northwest League girls basketball game Jan. 26 at Vernonia High School. The Pirates (6-5 NWL, 9-8 overall) were shorthanded with only eight players. Senior starting guard Jordan White (injured), junior Bella Hamann and junior Ashlynn Nelson were unable to play, which made it an extremely difficult matchup against the highly regarded No. 12 ranked Loggers (10-1 NWL, 16-2 oveall). White is expected to return to the lineup in the next game Thursday at 6 p.m. at home versus the Mannahouse Christian Academy Lions (3-6 NWL, 5-9 overall) For the No. 26 ranked Pirates, guided by Coach Corey Douma, it was just one bad game during a long season. The Pirates were hoping to bounce back and get a win versus area rival and the No. 16 ranked Nestucca High Lady Bobcats (9-2 NWL, 12-5 overall) on Tuesday (results were unavailable). “Sometimes you just have an off night, so we’ll just forget this one and move onto the next game,” said Douma. “We came out a little lethargic in the first quarter and we woke up a little bit in the
second. Vernonia was on fire in the first quarter and they have some good shooters. We finally started playing good defense in the second quarter. It’s hard when you’re missing a key player like Jordan though, because it kind of just changes everything else.” The Lady Loggers came out and displayed stellar shooting from the field as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead, forcing a timeout by Douma. The Pirates responded and a jumper in the lane by sophomore Kennedy Fletcher (team-high 13 points) made it 6-2. “It was kind of a rough game and I missed a lot of layups, but that’s OK,” said Fletcher. “We had a better game against them (Vernonia) when we played them at home (a 42-35 loss Jan. 22), but this was kind of an off game for us. We’re putting this game behind us though and we’ll just focus on coming back and playing better in the next game.” The hot shooting Loggers quickly built a double digit margin with a 14-2 advantage and they extended their lead to 22-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates fought back in the second, while playing more aggressive man-toman defense and holding the Loggers scoreless for the five minutes, 53 seconds in the quarter. Fletcher dropped in a pair of free throws, making it 22-7 with 5:58 left until halftime.
“Kennedy has come really far along the last couple of games, she’s been averaging about 13 points a game recently and so she’s been doing some real good things for us,” said Douma. “I’ve been real happy with the way the girls have been playing this year. This was actually our first real bad game this season. Four nights ago, we played real well against them (Vernonia) but we also had Jordan too and she really helps us out with everything.” Fletcher was fouled often on solid drives into the lane and she sank one-of-two at the line, trimming the margin to 22-8 with 3:14 on the clock. Vernonia got its first basket of the quarter with 2:07 remaining until halftime, making it 24-8 and the Loggers led 28-9 at the break. Early in the third, Emma Miller (five pts.), one of two Pirate seniors along with Riley Stinnett, sank a jumper in the lane, making it 30-11. The Loggers were in control though throughout the matchup as they extended their advantage to 47-13 after three quarters to pull away and get their fifth straight win. “Actually, we’ve had a pretty good season and it’s one of the better ones that we’ve had in recent years,” said Stinnett, whose younger sister Kailynn, scored three points. “They (Vernonia) were hitting shots and we were just a little off, but we’ll forget about this one. Three Capes Marathon Relay returns to the Tillamook Coast After a year’s absence, the Three Capes Marathon Relay is back! This marathon “with a view” will be hosted Feb. 26, 2022 in Tillamook County. The 26.2 mile course is a special race because it features the Three Capes Scenic Loop, starting at Cape Meares Lake, passing Cape Lookout, and finishing at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City. The rugged course passes through or runs adjacent to six State Parks, two National Wildlife Refuges, multiple
Tillamook County Parks, and boasts stunning vantage points of the Tillamook Bay, Netarts Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. Tackle this marathon as a team or solo! Choose between running a solo marathon, a two-person team, or a five-person team. The course is separated into five legs which vary in distances from 4.37 miles to just under seven miles. Team categories include: family, business, school, or Clydesdale. Starting and ending at sea level,
there is nearly 2,400 feet of climb within the course, offering a challenging racing venue that is great for building team camaraderie. ocial media is a mixed bag of sorts. It can lead to poor sleep quality, and fuel mental and emotional fatigue. It can be a very toxic experience depending on your perspective, how much time you spend on it, who you follow, and how you choose to interact. It can also be a wonderful tool which connects you to the people you love, niche hobby groups, meet-up opportunities, cultural awareness, and so much more! It’s a truly powerful source of communication. The speed in which the information, thoughts, feelings, and concepts within the content is exchanged can quickly overwhelm and exhaust anyone. It’s healthy to sometimes step back and take a break from the virtual world for a period. There are other ways to engage online which might help lessen the stress you’re feeling from the content you consume. Being intentional about
who you follow can make or break your experience online. There is so much aggression and misinformation, curating your feed will change the way you see the world. Follow users who matter to you and unsubscribe from those who cause you undue stress. Some differences in opinion are totally healthy and normal, but if those you follow engage in a way that is disrespectful, what are you gaining from that connection? Find stimulating content creators that reflect your unique interests. This can help you to meet others virtually and build a real connection over time! You might find a local group meet-up to make friends in person. Social media is intended to foster connection and collaboration, it’s all about how you use it. On the other hand, seek out accounts from people with diverse interests and perspectives. Find people from cultures completely different than your own. Find people who don’t look or think any-

6.5 Tons of E-waste Collected in Just One Day • Approximately 50 million tons of e-waste is generated around the world. However, about 70 percent of the materials inside those electronics can be collected through recycling and repurposed into other goods or raw materials. • To manufacture, distribute and retail one computer and monitor, it takes approximately 500 pounds of fuel, nearly 50 pounds of chemicals and more than one ton of water. • For every one million cell phones recycled, we recover more than 35,000 pounds of copper, 700 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold.
Tillamook County transfer stations recently hosted a special e-waste collection event to benefit high school senior SAFE committees in Nestucca, Neah-kah-nie, and Tillamook. Community members from across the county released 6.5 tons of non-working computers, televisions, printers, keyboards and mice to be recycled. Televisions, alone, accounted for 2.5 tons of the total and in Pacific City, customers brought in almost a ton of printers. Each January Tillamook County Solid Waste advertises a Saturday in which all proceeds from the sale of broken electronics will be donated
to area high school seniors. “By donating to Senior SAFE, the community makes the senior’s party really special,” explains Amber Porter, this year’s Tillamook SAFE party coordinator and parent of a Tillamook HS senior. “I can’t tell you what we are doing this year - it’s a surprise - but, I can tell you it will be fun and memorable.” Through the Oregon E-Cycles program, e-waste can be dropped off free-of-charge year ‘round in Manzanita, Tillamook, and Pacific City. One company in Clackamas processes much of our e-waste here in Oregon. They chop, crush and grind the items

The Water Treatment Plant Manager is responsible for managing and maintaining the district’s facilities, including two ultrafiltration membrane treatment facilities, three pump stations, five water storage reservoirs, and the associated conveyance pipelines for these systems. The water district provides service for the communities of both Oceanside and Cape Meares which together total around 850 service connections. This is a hands-on position that requires the physical ability to work in in the field installing and repairing distribution systems, as well as operating and maintaining two highly automated processing plants. It will require managing a two-person operational staff to repair water leaks and install new services connections as well as regular maintenance on both the treatment facilities and distribution system. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Participates in and leads the Operations staff in both water treatment and distribution. • Supervises employees of the water treatment plant; manages staffing and operational activities, including operational changes, maintenance priorities, scheduling and compliance with regulations from federal, state, and local agencies • Ensures training for personnel and enforces safety policies and procedures. • Receives and resolves customer complaints and concerns. • Determines the means and methods to measure plant performance relative to established benchmarks. • Carries out an extensive program of chemical and biological water testing as required by current and proposed drinking water regulations; determines modifications needed to maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. • Ensures preparation and maintenance of accurate records, reports, evaluations and proposals on current and long-range district water treatment plant needs. • Participates in planning annual water treatment plant budget, including determining capital purchases and staffing needs, and prioritizing requests and allocation of resources. • Helps identify, test, qualify and register potential new raw water sources to be used by the district in an emergency.
