Tillamook’s Bunny turns 102 Saturday Card Shower planned in celebration

unny, a resident at Kilchis House, turns 102 years old Saturday, Dec. 11. Her family, along with the staff at Kilchis House in Tillamook, where she has lived for the past 18 years, has planned a card shower and cookie feast to help her celebrate this milestone. Bunny was born Elda Bess on Dec. 11, 1919. She was born in Lamar, Colorado. Her dad nicknamed her ‘Bunny’ and the name stuck. “She loves bunnies,” said Carol Hyatt her daughter in law. “Anything bunnies.” According to Sandy Somerakis, an administrator at Kilchis House and one of Bunny’s close friends, the employees of Kilchis House put up a concrete bunny in the garden at Kilchis House and according to Carol, Bunny lifted the 20 pound statue and put it in her room she loved it so much. Bunny married Edward Hyatt in 1938 after high school. Edward was a policeman in Rawlins, Wyoming for 20 years. Everyone called Edward by a nickname, Ted. They had two children, Ted and Kathy. Her daughter, adopted, lives in Idaho. Including Bunny, there are five generations alive. Bunny has three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren as well as 14 great-great-grandchildren. Ted said that his dad and his dad’s brotherin-law worked on Donner Pass, cutting right away for PG&E. They lived up there for three years. They lived in tents in the snow while they worked. The couple moved from California to Wyoming. Bunny worked as a head cook at Rawlins Memorial Hospital for several years. “She cleaned houses for people, she did laundry for people, made wedding cakes, she sewed, and was the president of the VFW, the women’s thing, for years,” Ted said. Bunny and Edward moved to Tillamook in 1970. Edward passed away in 2002. Her sister-

in-law turned 103 years old in June. “They are the best of friends all of these years,” Ted said. Bunny loves to sew, cook and garden. For trips with the family, she would do all the cooking, for up to 22 people. “Our family liked to camp for a few week each year in Yellowstone and Bunny would do all the cooking,” Ted said. Bunny has a sewing machine in her room at Kilchis House, and although she no longer sews, she won’t allow it to be taken out of her room. In her younger years, she was a boot stomping piano and harmonica player. Carol said she has always been very active and has always been active in church when she is able. “During COVID shutdowns, Kilchis House hosted Zoom performances for the residents. “When some honky-tonk music came on, Bunny would wake up and her hands would start playing along, just like she was playing the piano herself,” Sandy said with a laugh. Bunny has been a resident at Kilchis House for 18 years. She has a plant that she brought with her when she moved in that is now 65-70 years old. It is a Christmas cactus that the staff has been taking care of. “She made all of what is called aprons, that the residents wear here,” Carol said. She also made quilts for Kilchis House. “They were lap robes,” Carol said. “She’s never smoked or chewed tobacco or drank alcohol,” Ted said when asked what Bunny’s secret is to be living so long. “She does swear occasionally.” Bunny still has a remaining sister. Her two brothers, one of them being her twin, passed away. When Bunny turned 100, she received 110 birthday cards. Carol said they had hoped to beat that number this year. A

s a new variant of COVID-19 begins to spread around the globe, state officials are urging residents to get vaccinated before Omicron becomes a serious threat. The new variant has established itself in South America and appears to spread more easily than the Delta variant that spread around the globe and caused cases and deaths to spike on Oregon. Initial reports in South Africa show the Omicron variant spreads easily, but most cases are less severe with many reporting cold-like symptoms. Dr. Dean Sidelinger , the state epidemiologist, said work is ongoing to learn more about Omicron, but he said one thing is for certain - it will get to Oregon. “Omicron has not yet been detected in the Oregon, but we expect it will be in the coming days due to its reported high transmissibility,” Sidelinger said. “Oregon has one of the most robust variant surveillance systems in the United States, and so far, no cases of Omicron have been detected. What we do know is that the basic prevention steps we have long talked about remain the best ways to protect yourself against Omicron, Delta or any variant of COVID-19 that is circulating. Vaccination remains the best protection against COVID-19 infection and transmission, including

most circulating variants.: While it is too early to tell if Omicron can be stopped with the vaccine, Sidelinger said the success in keeping people out of the hospital and alive in Delta shows the vaccine is effective, even if someone catches COVID. “The vaccines have remained highly effective against other variants, and we expect the same to be true with Omicron. We should have early answers in the coming weeks,” he said. “The best way to protect yourself against Omicron, or any variant of COVID-19 that is circulating, is to be vaccinated. Vaccination remains the best protection against COVID-19. Those who are not yet vaccinated should get their first COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. Those due for a booster – all adults either two months after a Johnson & Johnson vaccination or six months after a Moderna or Pfizer vaccination – should get it as soon as possible. Wearing a mask when inside public places as well as social distancing and handwashing remain incredibly important in the face of

an emerging variant and high levels of community transmission.” Some reports have shown Omicron is in California, which means it is just a matter of time before it moves to Oregon. While Sidelinger said that will cause some stress, he said taking preventative measures are the best steps to remain safe. “We know that news of Omicron’s emergence will cause many people to experience some anxiety about the unknown,” he said. “We also know there is a great deal of “pandemic fatigue” as cases, hospitalizations and deaths are reported daily. COVID-19 continues to disrupt our lives. illamook County had 16 COVID-19 cases over the last weekend, from Friday, Nov. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 28. There were 28 cases for the 7-day case count, from Nov. 21 through Nov. 27, Tillamook County Health Department reported. “Our 14-day case count is 53,” Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson shared during a community update Tuesday, Nov. 30. “That’s from Nov. 14 through Nov. 27.” From Nov. 1 through Nov. 28, the county had 160 cases. Eighty of those individuals were unvaccinated, 59 were vaccinated and 21 were unknown. The county is at 45 COVID-related deaths, with 36 of those unvaccinated, eight fully vaccinated and one had no vaccine record, as of Nov. 28. Colson said there is one confirmed outbreak and 12 pending investigation. Oregon Health Authority reported no new workplace outbreaks as of Wednesday, Dec. 1. “Testing remains available from our health center at our 8th Street acute care clinic,” Colson said. “Appointments are required.” Make an appointment by calling 503842-3900. Adventist Health and Rinehart Clinic also have COVID-19 testing available. “Early, safe and effective treatment for COVID-19 is available in Tillamook County,” Colson said. “It’s monoclonal antibody therapy. This therapy must be started as soon as possible within 10 days from a positive test.” This therapy requires provider referral,

Colson added. Talk to your health care provider right away if you have COVID-19 symptoms. The walk-in vaccine clinic is open for the month of December at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and from 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday. You can receive a first, second or booster dose at this clinic. Two vaccine events are scheduled for Dec. 10 and Dec. 11. A pop-up clinic is set for 3-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at the Nestucca K-8 School. A vaccine event will also occur from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Tillamook Air Museum’s holiday event. All vaccines will be available at both events. “Also, our partners Adventist Health, Rinehart Clinic and our pharmacies have vaccines available,” Colson said. Colson said scientists are currently studying the new Omicron variant. Oregon Health Authority is continuing to monitor the variant closely. “As we learn more, we’ll share information on how best to protect yourself and keep your loved ones and your community safe,” Colson said. People should choose to get vaccinated and receive a booster dose if it has been six months since their series of Pfizer of Moderna or two months after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. “Masks are still required in all indoor public areas, on public transit, in K-12 schools, and in health care settings for all 2 years old and older,” Colson said. “Masks and physical distancing of 6 feet are highly encouraged at private residences when gathering indoors with people outside your household and outdoors when unable to maintain 6 feet of distance.”

Gov. Brown calls special session to address eviction protections Staff Report

Governor Kate Brown has called the Oregon Legislature into special session on December 13 to address eviction protections for renters. “As we enter our coldest months, it is absolutely essential that we take action to ensure no additional Oregon families are evicted when

rental assistance is on the way,” Brown said. “I have spoken directly with Oregon renters in recent weeks about the pain and hardship their families have faced due to the economic impacts of the pandemic. We must take legislative action now to approve additional state funding for rental assistance, and to extend eviction protections for

Oregonians who have applied for assistance. “Our federal funds for rental assistance will be nearly spent on December 1. I am continuing to work with federal officials at U.S. Treasury and the White House to secure additional federal emergency rental assistance funding for Oregon, but it is clear that a state solution is needed to address the urgent and immediate needs of Oregon renters. And, we must begin laying the groundwork now for the transition to local eviction prevention services after federal pandemic emergency programs draw to an end.” Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) received $289 million in federal rental assistance funds to help Oregon renters impacted by COVID-19. As of last week, OHCS and their local partners had paid out close to $150 million in federal emergency rental assistance to over 22,000 households - with Oregon ranking eighth in the nation for federal funds paid or obligated. OHCS and its partners have received more than 25,000 additional applications and continue to review

and approve thousands of those applications each week. Nearly $20 million was paid to renters over the previous two weeks. OHCS has calculated that all remaining federal rental assistance funds will have been requested by December 1. After conversations with legislative leaders, stakeholders, landlord associations, and housing advocates, the Governor is proposing the following

framework to prevent further evictions: • Extend eviction safe harbor protections for each individual who has applied for rental assistance. • Ensure landlords are paid in full for the rent they are owed. • Provide up to $90 million in additional rental assistance to ensure low-income tenants access through the winter. • Provide $100 million to

transition from large-scale pandemic-related emergency rental assistance to long-term, locally-delivered eviction prevention services. The package would address the immediate needs of Oregon renters through the winter months. Legislators may also be asked to take on additional time-sensitive issues during the special session that require action before February 2022.

Alan will bring his popular brand of cover tunes to Tillamook Tuesday Dec. 7, Fri. Dec. 10, Tuesday Dec. 14 and one more performance on Fri. Dec. 17. All shows are from 7 to 10 p.m. and you better get reservations, because seats will fill up quickly for this venue. Alan, who is an engineer by day has been playing music for over 40 years. He currently lives in Portland and plays venues all over the Northwest. “I work remotely, so I’m able to play music at night and on the weekends,” he said. “I play everything from Merle Haggard to Led Zeppelin and everything in-between, everything everyone knows and loves.” Alan has played in bands, but the last few years he’s been going out on his own as a one man band. “I do a solo act on the side and still work with bands that need a bass or guitar player here and there,” he said. “I enjoy my solo act because I record all the backing tracks in my studio – they’re all me,then when I go out and play live, it sounds like a full band.” By being able to do this, he can tweak the music to gig he’s playing while getting his fans involved in the show.

Courtesy photo “I design it to the crowd or the venue, ‘interactive’ meaning I take a box of rhythm instruments, tambourines and stuff, and get everybody playing and singing with me,” He said. “Anybody that wants to come up and play can join right in, It’s a family thing and it works anywhere, and I have a very well-thought out song list pretty much designed for the baby boomers. It’s a lot of fun.” Many musicians have inspired Alan, and he’s played with several bands before going out on his own. He plays both acoustical and electric guitar, and also has a wide range of music he loves to bring to the stage. Let me just start out with saying Django, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler, Billy Gib-

bons, and Albert Lee, to name a few – I’m an old school ‘70s, early ‘60s guy” Alan said. “Thank God for my parents listening to Chet Atkins’ stuff. It was really inspiring, and now he’s like a god. I guess my stylings would be coined from bits and pieces of all those players.” Alan has been to Tillamook before, and admits he loves the coast. “A couple of summers ago I played here with a country band at the Air Museum and I also played a couple of shows in 2011,” Alan said. “I love the coast and can’t wait to come back.” For more information about Dirk Alan, check out his website: dirkalanmusic.

ecember has rolled around and the holiday lights are going up. What a festive sight! I hope a great Thanksgiving kicked off the holiday season for you; it did for us. Our daughter, Nicole (“Coco”), and her family hosted us and our son’s family in her south Salem home for an absolutely scrumptious meal, topped off by six extraordinary pies baked by Cape Meares own BJ Byron. Thanks for providing the grand finale to our Thanksgiving dinner, BJ! I heard about two traffic incidents that happened the day before Thanksgiving.

Captain Pete and neighbor Rod Pelson were headed off to go crabbing in Netarts Bay when their truck began to sashay on the road. They finally figured out that there was black ice on Highway 131!

Pete slowed down, put on his flashers, put the vehicle in four-wheel drive, and all went well after that. That same day, neighbors Merrie and Jon Ziady reported seeing a truck in the ditch on Bayocean Road. A car with Utah plates had stopped to help, but didn’t know exactly where they were. The Ziadys contributed detailed location info to the 911 call. The woman driver of the truck appeared to be okay and did not want to exit the vehicle. Watch these winter road conditions, neighbors! Did you catch sight of some of the big breakers over the recent king tide series,

plete service, so they are also unhappy. It affects everyone.” While Shannon found a temporary solution to housing at the fire hall, she acknowledges that it’s not easy. Through the residency program, the fire district offered her a small stipend as well as tuition help for EMT classes and firefighting certifications. She put in 240 hours per month of shift work with the paid firefighters in addition to finding time for attending her nursing classes, studying, and sometimes holding down a part time job. “It’s not for everyone. It’s stressful and worth it, especially for the training. One just has to be very disciplined and structured if working and going to school.” This term Shannon will continue to live at the firehall but now under NRFPD’s “sleepervolunteer” option. With this program there are no assigned shifts, and no stipend, but she is expected to respond when she is in the district and available. She will also keep the station clean and organized, wash equipment, write up maintenance and supply reports as well as attend training and drills. Still, it will give her more time to study and leave some hours for a part time job at a local urgent care clinic. She says that “It isn’t bad living at the station, but I would like to have my own place. If I did not have the station, it would be challenging to find something that is local and affordable

Shannon is a Firefighter, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a nursing student at Tillamook Bay Community College and a 23 year plus coastal resident. She loves the area and wants to stay. Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District’s (NRFPD) residency program has provided valuable training and a temporary housing solution, but she’s still looking for a home. According to Shannon,” Rents have gone up, many landlords want first, last, cleaning and security deposits. Local towns used to have more of a mix of options. In the past there were more long-term attainable rentals available.” She adds that “People who are willing to rent their homes for longer times often want to use those homes for the summer months. This is often when local businesses would like to hire extra employees to service the tourist traffic. This makes it hard for businesses, too. Some owners can’t hire enough servers, so they are forced to change to ‘walk up’ ordering or to operate with short staff. Many visitors would prefer more com-

Like many younger folks in our coastal towns, Shannon is a valuable, energetic, contributing community member who hopes to someday find a stable home in the area. She knows she is not the only one having trouble finding housing. In fact, in response to the shortage of workforce housing in the county, NRFPD no longer requires its paid firefighters to live within the district’s boundaries. Of the nine full-time firefighters supported by a recent tax levy, only one lives in the district. Shannon believes “The housing shortage affects communityworking professionals, fishers, ambulance personnel, firefighters and other full-time residents who work in our local businesses and who are essential to this coastal economy. freely admit that many of my “Tales from the Library” columns are aimed at telling people how great libraries are. But why take my word for it? This week, I have gathered quotes to share from people around the world who know the many pleasures a library can bring. The first quote is one I considered saving as the grand finale of this column because it is my favorite. But just in case some of you don’t make it to the end of this article, I am going to quote it first. French poet and novelist Victor Hugo once said, “A library implies an act of faith.” Seven simple words but they sum up the awe I feel when I consider how amazing it is that libraries even exist. Such a simple concept wherein you can take books home, read them, then bring them back for someone else to enjoy... FOR FREE! I mean, what other business can compete with that offer? And that idea goes hand-

The selection committee that reviews the nominations and selects the final awards is made up of past years’ honorees and other community members. The Chamber staff does not choose the honorees — the community does. Because all important things bear repeating, I’ll remind you again that nominations are due by 5 p.m. December 9. Groucho Marx, who always had a different, humorous take on things, once said, “I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book.” If you’ve ever read a Western novel, there is a good chance it was written by the prolific novelist, Louis L’Amour. He demonstrated his love of libraries when he said, “The idea of education has been so tied to schools, universities, and professors, that many assume there is no other way, but education is

So on Wednesday night, my parents would walk us over to the library. It was such a big deal, to go in and get my own book.” And finally, I will close with a quote from a very famous American president, Thomas Jefferson, who summed it all up by saying, “I cannot live without books.” So, you see I’m not the only one who thinks libraries are great! Whatever your reason for using the library, I am sure it is a quotable reason as well. Long live libraries.

GARDENING MATTERS

efore I start into talking about gift suggestions for December shoppers, I found a pretty cool decorating idea from my friends at The Garden Corner nursery in Tualatin: make a holiday hanging basket! I tried one and it couldn’t have been easier. All I did was find my hanging basket of annuals from last summer. I cut all the greenery back to soil level, leaving the soil in place. Then I roamed around my garden and cut branches of evergreen shrubs and trees and plunked them into the soil until I had a pleasing design. I went back to the design mantra of “Thriller, filler and spiller.” Then, I

added a few pine cones, some pyracantha red berries with an all-weather Christmas bow and… Voila! An instant hanging basket for the holidays. After New Years, all I have to do is take the bow off and I will still have some pretty greens for the rest of the winter.

Gift Guide part 2 Now to some local gift ideas for gardeners on your list. One of my favorite gifts to give - or receive - is a basket of gardening tools I put together from our local hardware or big box stores. Its pretty easy too. Take a large basket that can be used in the garden for harvesting or carrying tools. Fill it with an assortment of gardening gloves: a couple of pairs of nitrile or cotton gloves for every day, and perhaps long, leather gloves for your rose-loving gardener. Add a pronged weeder, a new pair of shears, a trowel or garden “claw,” a package of fertilizing spikes, and maybe some garden stakes

or labels. Perhaps add a nice bottle of hand lotion. Tie it up with an all-weather Christmas ribbon that can be reused (maybe on that hanging basket?), and you have a very personalized and special gift. You are only limited by your imagination and your wallet. We are very lucky in Tillamook to have several nice florists – Sunflower Flats and Anderson Florist as well as our new one, Riverside Floral. Whether it be roses or other floral staples or the traditional poinsettia or amaryllis, flowers are a great gift for gardeners. You may think flowers or plants from a florist may be a little obvious, but I don’t know

of a single gardener who wouldn’t love some bright color in their lives during the winter months. Something they can enjoy without too much work involved. All of these shops have an assortment of Christmas decorations as well, so that might be something fun and a little different to consider. I am sure you can find something to fit every budget here, too. And, of course, there is always the option of a gift certificate. This can be to local shops like the abovementioned florists, or to hardware stores for tools and seeds. But you are not limited to local shops if you have the ability to go online and order gift certificates from places like Gardeners’ Supply (www.gardeners. com) or Kinsman Company (www.kinsmangarden. com), both of which carry tools and garden accoutrements like baskets, supports, cold frames and even some garden art. Gift certificates can also be found at specialty nurseries like Annie’s Annuals and Mountain Crest Gardens, both carrying highquality plants in Northern California. Thinking outside the box a little, consider giving your gardener (or yourself) a gift of the Tillamook County Master Gardener Classes. This is the perfect gift for the new gardener, the newto-Oregon-Coast gardener, or even the experienced

gardener. And it is an opportunity for your gardener to give back to his/her community - once they are trained - by answering the public’s gardening questions. The 2022 classes run from January to March and will feature a self-paced, hybrid, online format. Plans for the course include weekly Zoom hangouts, and livestreamed lectures from horticulture experts across the state. But it also will include in-person, hands-on learning opportunities, if conditions allow. At $100, this ten-week course is a bargain when you consider all the information you will learn. There are also scholarships available. If you have spotty or non-existent internet service, the Oregon State Extension Service will make accommodations to help you. OBITUARIES

Dorothee ‘Dottee’ Louise Bristow Mary Lenora (Watkins) Stewart

D

orothee “Dottee” Louise Bristow was born June 25, 1939, in Bad Polzin, Germany to Kurt and Charlotte Dunkel. Dottee passed away November 16, 2021, in Beaverton, Oregon at the age of 82. At the age of 12, Dottee moved to the United States from Germany. As a child, she lived in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps and loved to go with her mother and two brothers, Klaus and Wolfgang, to the woods near the Alps to pick wild Primroses, which Germans translate as “Keys to Heaven.” In the U.S., she attended schools at R. A. Long High School, Lower Columbia College, and the Seattle Orthopedic Hospital, all in Washington State. Dottee met her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Bristow, of 60 years, at a dance when Jerry “thought” Dottee was winking at him, so he asked her to dance. Jerry later discovered that it was really just her new contacts making her wink. Dottee and Jerry were married on December 16, 1961, in Longview, Washington. Initially, Dottee worked as a Medical Technologist at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, then briefly at Wheeler Hospital, and for the next 33 years, at the Tillamook County General Hospital. Dottee was very active volunteering and serving on many boards in Tillamook County. Some of the organizations included; Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Women’s Philanthropic Organization, Tillamook Library Board of

ary was born in Tillamook, Oregon to Edward “Ted” Watkins and Hazel Shaw Watkins. The eighth of 10 children, she lost her mother when she was just seven years old. Her father instilled in her the need to always be able to take care of herself and not rely on anyone. This set Mary’s life trajectory of being fiercely independent. Mary left Tillamook after graduating from Sacred Heart Catholic High School and went on to create her own adventures up and down the west coast. In her 20’s, Mary and her brother Jim owned The Red Hare bar in NW Portland, where she said men would come in for a drink or two after work before heading home to their wives and kids. It was truly a different era. She married Jerry Stewart in 1961, a union that lasted 57 years until Jerry’s death in 2018. Mary was a devoted wife who enjoyed the many painting tasks Jerry assigned to her on his construction jobs, including the home they built for themselves in Mulege, Mexico. Mary could cook like no other. In fact, she had her own successful catering business for many years. While her claim to fame would be catering Bruce Springsteen’s first wedding, she will always be remembered for lovingly bestowing the virtue of hospitality on her nieces and nephews as she hosted

She was a member of Tillamook Master Gardeners, Red Cross Liaison for the Blood Mobile, volunteer at the Tillamook Hospital during the Blood Pressure Clinics, board member, treasurer and chair for the March of Dimes Charity Drive at Tillamook High School. Additionally, she was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and served on the Women’s Fellowship Committee. Together, Dottee and Jerry loved to dance and were members of the Neah-KahNie Dance club. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and belonged to multiple bridge groups with many friends over the years. Dottee enjoyed gardening, reading, fishing, crabbing, traveling and camping in their RV, but her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Dottee is survived by her husband Jerry Bristow, one son, Steve Bristow and his wife Ranee, three daughters, Karin Hulse and her husband Brandt, Melissa Ford and her husband Fred, and Diane Pittmon and her husband Brian. Her grandchildren include Katelyn (Bristow) Fund, Brendan Bristow, Camryn Bristow, Brock Hulse, Brayden Hulse, Bryce Hulse, Jasmine Ford, Amanda Ford, Alexa Pittmon and Zachery Pittmon. She also sang in the Our Lady of the Lake choir for many years. Mary took great care of herself, never took vitamins or other remedies, was spry and witty and always had a good story. After Jerry died three years ago, she agreed it was time to move to The Springs retirement community. She made her nieces swear to never speak of her age to other residents, “they can read my obituary - and they can do the math!” While the pandemic curtailed her ability to attend weekly Mass, she prayed the rosary daily and counted St. Joseph as one of the saints that constantly watched over her. Our Aunt (“ant”) Mary has gone down in family history as the last of the original 10 Watkins siblings. As kids we were fortunate to know ALL of our aunts and uncles and these last few weeks have been particularly poignant as we reminisce on the legacy of the final of these 10 slipping away. Family reunions will never quite be the same. Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Ford, Florence, Morrey, Marg, Bob, Dorothy, Tom, Joanne and Jim as well as several treasured nieces and nephews. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her in-laws, Jan and Bob Stewart. It was the pleasure of her nieces Sr. Marian, Carmen, Teri, Traci, Toni and Tami to assist her in maintaining her independent lifestyle the last few years. enjamin E. Boyok was born July 7, 1978 to Philip E. and Paula (Parmelee) Boyok and passed away November 17, 2021 in Cloverdale, Oregon. Services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 2:00 PM. Rosary at 1:30 PM. Along with a prayer service November 29, 2021 at 6 PM. After graduation from Sioux City East High School, Ben moved to Oregon and worked

as a Commercial Fisherman. Two children were born to him and his long-time partner, Brooklynn Wyntergreen, George, and Otilja. Ben was a loving, devoted father. He lived his life exploring the great outdoors, snowboarding on Mt.Hood, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and taking his son George to Portland Trailblazer games. Benjamin will be missed by many. Survivors include his young children, their mother Brooklynn, his parents and step-mother Vicky, brothers Philip R. (Suppipich), Jason (Stephanie); sisters Marissa, Alicia, Madeleine, and Anji. Nephews Vitali, Ta’Ron, Benicio, Levi and niece, Cora Rose and Grandmother Virginia Parmelee; and many Aunts, Uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Philip M. and Rita Boyok and maternal grandfather, Vernon Paul Parmelee, and Aunts Patricia, Pamela and Paige Nine.

Well folks, it was pure magic! There was a sing-a-long with the Salty Strings Ukulele Group, and then the train arrived in full splendor. The town was covered in lights, even the caboose, and Christmas cheer was around every corner and in every nook and cranny. Santa waved at

eWayne was born to Lloyd and Virginia Seufert in Tillamook, Oregon, where he lived until his early 20’s. DeWayne married and had his first child, Janet, before his job with the US Forest Service, took him to Glide, Oregon. He worked out of Glide for several years, having 2 boys during that time all assembled, and there were many, from the full train as it arrived with 200 people ready to enjoy our community. Mr. and Mrs. Claus stepped off the train and had a special chair in our wayside to greet each and every child. There was joy and music in the air and the attendance was over the top. My husband guessed maybe 400 or more. Well, then people shopped until they dropped, us included. Living in a small community makes events like these events something you truly do not want to miss. As you drive down Hwy 101, you may notice the giant Pronto Pup Reindeer that is spreading Christmas cheer to all that walk or drive down the road. Be sure to drive past 602 Hwy 101 S. The Original Pronto Pup is under new ownership and have the tastiest Pronto Pups ever. They are officially the “Home of the Pronto Pup!” December birthdays at the most wonderful time of the year. There are lots of birthdays this month so I will get right to it. There are Dale Brosius, Debra Geoff Grace, Catherine Imbrie, Mike Konruff, Don Best, Alice Jeffers, Louise Haley, Coral Vance, Gail Kessinger and Mary Faith Bell. reetings Bay City! Good grief! It is already December! Yes, I couldn’t believe it either! I am mad at myself for not getting a head start on December; I’m taking this retirement thing way too seriously. However, I did have a wonderful November. I spent time with family and friends, and best of all was spending Thanksgiving in Arizona with my sister Bonnie. If she knew I told you that she is the oldest of my siblings, it would make her mad, so I’m not going to tell her that I wrote it in the Fencepost. If you missed the November Bay City Newsletter from City Hall, it was full of great news; starting with “Meet our new staff”. It included Leane Welch, our new Manager. Leane has an impressive resume, including spending over ten years as Public Works Director and County Engineer for Tillamook County, and more recently, serving as City Engineer for the city of Tillamook. Lindsey Gann was hired as the City Recorder and Finance Director. Her background includes six years as Chief Civil Deputy at the Tillamook County Sheriff’s office, and twelve years as office manager at E&E Auto Center. Our new Code Enforcement Officer is longtime Tillamook resident, Jimmie Cope, Jr. Before he joined the Bay City staff he was a veterinarian tech at Pioneer Veterinary Hospital, and currently he is attending TBCC. It was 80 years ago that Japanese bombers staged a surprise attack on our military forces in Hawaii, resulting in 3,435 casualties and the loss, or disabling of, 188 planes, eight battleships, three light cruisers, and four other vessels. The following day President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked congress to issue a declaration of war makes our community really special. It’s Christmas in Rockaway Beach!! “LIGHT UP ROCKAWAY BEACH.” Robin McDonald gave me all the info for this event. It is the Annual Business & Residential Christmas Decorating Contest. against Japan. Only three days later Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, and WWII had begun. Its a good time for us to remember all of those WWII service members who sacrificed to keep us free, including our own Bub Simmons. The November issue off AARP tells of how AARP is finding ways to help veterans who might feel like they’ve lost a sense of purpose after leaving the military. Through their 53 state offices and nationwide network, AARP can help veterans and their families find the right opportunity to give back to their communities. This is a “critical mission” of the organization. Former service members volunteer with AARP on the state and community levels more than any other group. I know that our veterans appreciate it when we take the time to acknowledge their service to our country. Brandon Pomrenke wrote a heartfelt article for the November issue or Ruralite titled “Reflecting this Veterans Day”. His ideas for doing something special to help or thank a veteran were excellent. Two of my favorites were: donate to “Operation Gratitude”, which prepares care packages for troops throughout the world; and secondly, attend VFW or American Legion sponsored events. During the holiday season it is important for veterans to know that “We’ve got your back”. Doug Beeler: Local Peer Support Specialist Brett Buesnel AmeriCorps VISTA at TCCHC What is a Peer Support Specialist? n a nutshell, a Peer Support Specialist helps someone move away from fear and toward hope. I try to empower people in their recovery through these shifts, establishing and reinforcing a trusting connection with them. The connection is genuine and plays a big role in the specialist’s ability to understand the story the client tells of themselves and of their addiction. A peer support specialist walks the line next to someone else, empowering along the path toward recovery. We explore their plans of recovery and support them in realizing their hopes

and dreams. Sharing my lived experience is key in the peer support setting through which I serve people. I help by sharing hope and letting them know that their past does not have to define their future. Another important aspect of the Intentional Peer Support system is the conversation that is shared and the knowing that comes out of it. The conversation helps create the momentum of moving towards goals, moving towards hope. In my work, I help people keep their dreams alive by reminding them of what can be. “What are your hopes and dreams? What is your path to recovery?” I am also a recovery mentor, and with the clients’ permission, I can shift gears and suggest ideas while sharing more of my lived experience on how

them, which makes it more difficult to see the new and positive possibilities that exist for them.

Job Announcement Announcement: Rockaway Beach Fire Rescue is seeking highly motivated individuals to apply for the positions of Division Chief of Operations. Primary job functions will be to manage department operational readiness for emergency response and serve as the emergency preparedness manager for Rockaway Beach Fire Rescue. This position will be open until filled with the first review of applications on December 30th, 2021. Department Profile: Rockaway Beach Fire Rescue was established in 1936 and has a rich history of serving its citizens. Rockaway Beach is located in Tillamook County between Tillamook Bay and Nehalem Bay and serves a year-round population of 1400 residents. Rockaway is a popular tourist destination year-round, for summer beachgoers and winter storm watchers. Tourist populations can reach into the thousands on busy weekends. The area served is approximately 3 square miles and encompasses the City of Rockaway, Nedonna Beach, Twin Rocks and a 5 mile stretch of coastline. The Department is currently staffed with a Full-time paid fire Chief and 18 volunteer firefighter\EMT’s. The calls for service are diverse and include first response medicals, structure fires, MVA’s, brush fires, weather related emergencies and surf\water rescues. Call volume continues to increase, the department answered 282 calls for service in 2019, 449 in 2020 and 555 calls year to date in 2021.
