County at 32 COVID-related deaths Boosters for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson awaiting recommendations

illamook County Health Department reported Wednesday, Oct. 20, 16 COVID-19 cases for the weekend case count from Oct. 15-17, 36 cases for the 7-day case count, 61 cases for the 14-day case count from Oct. 3-16, and 69 cases month to date, from Oct. 1-17. The health department reports a total of 1,949 cases since March 2020. “For the 14-day case count, there was 61 from Oct. 3 to Oct. 16,” Shelby Porter, public health representative for the health center, stated during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Oct. 20. The health department reported Thursday, Oct. 21, three additional deaths from September, that recently became available in the system. The county’s death toll is now at 32. Tillamook County’s 30th COVID-19 related death is a 51-yearold woman from Tillamook County who died on Sept. 01 at Providence

Portland Medical Center. She had underlying health conditions. Tillamook County’s 31st COVID-19 related death is a 80-year-old man from Tillamook County who died on Sept. 10 at his private residence. He had underlying health conditions. Tillamook County’s 32nd COVID-19 related death is a 38-year-old man from Tillamook County who died on Sept. 11 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. He had underlying health conditions. Porter said there are four confirmed outbreaks in Tillamook County, eight pending investigation and 12 under monitoring. Oregon Health Authority confirmed outbreaks as of Oct. 20, at Tillamook County Creamery Association with 21 cases and Adventist Health with a total of 24 cases. There is safe treatment available in Tillamook County, Porter added. This is monoclonal antibody therapy. “These treatments do require a provider referral after a positive

test,” Porter said. “The treatment is given through a one-time IV infusion, currently at Adventist Health Tillamook Hospital.” COVID-19 testing is available through the health center at their acute care clinic, located at 2111 8th St., from 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are required. Call 503-842-3900 to make an appointment. “This is for individuals who are sick or have a close contact to someone who did test positive,” Porter said. The health department recommends individuals continue to follow the precautions: wear your mask properly over your mouth and nose, keep six feet of distance from those you do not live with or not in your immediate household, wash your hands frequently, and make a plan to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible if you are 12 years old or older and not yet vaccinated. Regarding vaccines, for the 16

and older population, 77.14 percent have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 77.01 percent are considered fully vaccinated, Porter said. For the total population, 63.87 percent have received at least one dose and 59.62 percent are considered fully vaccinated. On Oct. 21, CDC’s advisory panel recommended booster doses of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for those who have already completed their vaccine series. The committee recommended the use of booster doses for both vaccines for those 18 and older for six months after a Moderna primary vaccination series and two months after a Johnson & Johnson vaccination series for those eligible. The Pfizer vaccine is now available for those who completed their dose series at least six months ago and are 65 years or older, ages 18 or older with underlying health conditions, or ages 18 or older and have a job that puts you in high risk of exposure to COVID-19.

The committee also considered a mix and match approach to booster doses. This would mean people eligible to receive any of the three booster doses could use any vaccine as their booster dose. The Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, including Oregon, Washington, California and Nevada, will assess the recommendations next. The group met Oct. 21 and should make its recommendation in one to two days. OHA would then issue guidance regarding the administration of booster shots in Oregon. Vaccine clinics are available at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays. No appointments are required. Rising seas could change coastal regions W

ith climate change impacting the Earth, sea levels are beginning to rise again, and as they rise it will impact the shorelines many in Oregon and California call home. That’s the message Kim McCoy shared during a virtual meeting celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition. McCoy recently updated the book, Waves and Beaches, which was originally written by Willard Bascom. The book is considered the leading authority on beaches, shorelines and the impact waves and weather have on them. McCoy, a physical oceanographer, adventurer and expert on coastal wave dynamics, said the impact on the coast is directly linked to weather events far away. “Everything that happens upstream impacts what happens on the coast,” McCoy said. “What happens upstream could very easily push out millions of pounds of sediment.” For decades, Bascom was the expert when it came to coastal areas. McCoy worked under Bascom and was asked to write the third update of Waves and Beaches. McCoy said the book covers coasts worldwide, but the work began in Astoria when Bascom was hired for the Waves Project. Last year, McCoy brought the new edition of the book to Asto-

ria, going full circle. “Where Willard Bascom started studying waves was in Astoria, and here it was returning a book all these years later,” McCoy said. McCoy said as the Earth’s temperature has slowly risen, it has caused ice, both on shore and in the sea to melt. “When things melt above sea level, they raise the sea level,” McCoy said. “When it’s sea ice, it doesn’t, so it’s important what happens inland. As the Earth warms, ice not only melts and fractures, but it also melts from below because the water is warming.” As far as climate change, the ocean is the key to changing weather, McCoy said. “The ocean is the key component to climate change,” he said. “The ocean is turbulent. Turbulence is everywhere in the universe. The warming Earth is causing the rapid fluctuations in our weather patterns. You can’t separate what’s happening anywhere on Earth. It’s all connected.” One impact on the coast is the loss of ice. McCoy explained that permafrost and ice on the coast protect the coast from waves and change. As the ice disappears, waves have a greater impact on shorelines. And the changes could be devastating if something doesn’t change. “If there’s a two-degree centigrade increase in global temperature, this is what will happen,”

McCoy said. “Miami will be underwater.” In Indonesia, rising water is putting 5 million people living in the capital city of Jakarta at risk. The risk is so severe, plans are being made to move the capital. The danger is rising waters lead to rising waves. And waves change everything they touch. “Every time a wave come into shore, it moves some sediment,” McCoy said. “Every single wave moves particles, millions of grains of sand. Every wave is unique. There’s no one wave that is repeated over time. Every single wave stirs up sediment, and that sediment goes someplace.”

The good news is, the changes are just starting. “The sea level hasn’t changed much in the last 4,000 years,” McCoy said. “It’s starting to change. In the last 20,000 years, the sea level has gone up 400 feet, but not much in the last 4,000 years. But it is rising again.” And if climate change continues to lead to a warming Earth, sea levels will begin to rise quickly. “We’re all connected, and I can’t stress enough, we need to have an understanding of what’s happening,” McCoy said. “We need to have average citizens have a sane approach to our coast.”

Christmas Basket Program spreads cheer for those in need F

or 12 years, the Tillamook Ecumenical Committee (TEC), a faith-based organization, has chaired the Christmas Basket Program. The ecumenical community of churches has combined their efforts to supply Christmas baskets and gifts for those in need. Dave Stuck, moderator of the TEC, said especially in the last couple of years, the committee knows it has been hard for families. The committee hopes to bring cheer during the holidays with the program. “It was around 250,” Stuck said of how many families were adopted during last year’s program. The applications to apply for a Christmas Basket is available now through CARE, located at 2310

1st St. in Tillamook. TEC encourages families and individuals that need a Christmas meal and gift for their family to apply. Return completed applications to CARE by Nov. 15. The Christmas Basket Program has limited funding, so applicants are helped on a first come, first served basis. “Nov. 18 will be the day people can come and select families,” Stuck said. “We’re going to hold that at Sacred Heart Parish Hall.” Contact Dave Stuck at St Alban’s Episcopal Church at 50384206192 for more information. Stuck said he will soon be sending out information to last year’s donors. Tillamook County Board of Commissioners approved Wednesday, Oct. 20, for Nehalem Bay Health District to be an additional location for needle exchange services. The goals of the needle exchange program are to reduce incidence of transmission of blood-borne infections through substance abuse, provide free access to and safe disposal of needles/syringes, and raise awareness about

the risk of drug overdoses and associates fatalities, the Memorandum of Agreement states. During a meeting Oct. 13, Tillamook County Public Health Representative Tara Stevens touched on the need to expand the program to reach more people in the community. The Tillamook Family Counseling Center’s Ivy Avenue Wellness Center was added as a location during that meeting. Shelby Porter, public health representative for the county

health center, said the proposed agreement for Nehalem Bay Health District would occur on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the upper level parking lot, near the food bank in Wheeler. “This is an important expansion,” Porter said for north Tillamook County. Commission Chair Mary Faith Bell said she is glad the program is expanding to north county and health partners are engaging in the program. “We have a very high use of opioids which can lead to

heroin use as a replacement,” Commissioner Erin Skaar said. “It’s a nationwide crisis and we’re not immune.” Skaar said harm reduction is crucial for people who want to stop using those drugs. Sea otters could be coming back to the Oregon Coast. During a meeting of Coos County commissioners, Michele Zwartjes, a field office supervisor with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said the

service has been conducting a feasibility study to consider introducing sea otters to the Pacific Coast. “Oregon is the only state along the Pacific Coast that does not have a sea otter population anymore,” Zwartjes said. “They were eliminated in the early 1900s due to hunting for the fur trade.”

Zwartjes said the Fish and Wildlife Service was tasked by Congress to do the feasibility study. The study is to look at the cost, impact and ability to introduce sea otters along the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington. Congress gave the service through the end of 2021 to produce the study. “Our final report is going to emphasize that more study is needed,” Zwartjes said. Zwartjes said hunting in the early 1900s eliminated sea otters along the Pacific Coast,

but there are small groups thanks to an effort to reintroduce the otter in the 1960s. “Much of the population in existence today is a result of reintroductions that occurred in the 1960s, including one in Southern Oregon along Port Orford,” she said. “It lasted about 10 years, and the even had pups. Some believe they migrated north and joined the California group.” Zwartjes said in the last

Jennifer Trost’s artistic journey began at Mount Hood Community College. “I took every single art class provided by the school and fell in love with the ceramic department,” Trost said. “I continued my ceramic education for about five years at Mount Hood Community College, with an amazing studio and amazing professors.” After completing her education, Trost put ceramics on the backburner for awhile. “I was well distracted with the realities of young life: paying rent, working a job, [and] having a relationship,” Trost said. “It wasn’t until my husband and I moved to Tillamook that I started doing pottery again at the Hoffman Center in Manzanita.” It’s there that Trost met a fellow potter who had a studio in Tillamook. “When COVID hit and everything shut down he opened his personal studio space to me,” Trost said. “That is where I worked last year.” After sharing a space, Trost found a place at the Tillamook Air Museum that would allow her room to create as well as sell to customers. “I am very excited to share my work with the community,” Trost said. “I’m planning

And if they were brought in, they could help heal the kelp forests, which have struggled to regain a footing after a heat wave and a die off of starfish led to a massive increase in purple urchins. “They have a very beneficial impact on the kelp forest,” Zwartjes said. “Because the otters eat the urchins, it allows the kelp to regrow, so

they have a very beneficial impact on the kelp beds.” Zwartjes said she had no timeline as to when sea otters could be brought to the coast, but she did say if the project moves forward, mass sightings of sea otters in Oregon is unlikely. “When they were on the Oregon coast, there were never very numerous,” she said. “There were only isolated pockets along the coast.”

e’s hanging up his boots—his fire boots, that is. Randy Klobas has retired from the Tillamook Fire Dept. (TFD) after serving as a volunteer fireman in Cape Meares for fifteen years. Fifteen years! Randy and his colleagues have put out many a smoldering fire in driftwood right here on our beach, and responded to countless medical emergencies. One fire on the spit, about 10 years ago, was a big one that they could not get an engine out to, and Randy thought for a while they might not be able to put it out—but they did. Not all the medical emergencies he responded to had happy endings, but one heart attack victim here in our village one July 4th did survive, due to our first responders’ applying CPR and using our fire engine’s AED. Randy couldn’t say enough about the caliber of the volunteer firefighters at TFD: how well-trained, dedicated and professional they are. Right here in Cape Meares, we will still have firefighters Mike Smith, Dave Audet, Jonathon Hedden, and Olli Ollikainen, and another community member is lining up for training sometime this fall/winter. wanted a less populated beach for filming, and ours fit the bill. The cameraman had the biggest lens on his camera that I have ever seen, and they were also using a drone to do part of the filming. Neighbor Rod Pelson spoke to the videographer and actually got to see the footage he had shot of our beach, rough seas and all, intended for use in the opening scene of the movie. The film company plans to show the movie at a film festival in hopes of selling it to an outfit like Netflix or Amazon. The movie is essentially finished, with just the intro from our open, relatively unpopulated beach to be added. Keep your eyes peeled for it! Here is news for all you birders out there: A white juvenile snow goose and a cinnamon teal were spotted on the southern arm of Cape Meares Lake. Snow geese are rare on the coast. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR When America’s greatness was at its pinnacle

pendulum. I fervently hope that the pendulum will swing back and that we will again learn to respect again our government, science, and each other. Respect will lead us back to being united, lack of respect leads to us being divided. The return of respect cannot be dispensed from above, we must open our minds and our hearts and do it for ourselves.

For what seems an eternity, the concept “Make America Great Again” has been at the forefront of our collective conscience. I don’t think it is working. At no time in my life, can I remember America being less great than it is today. At 75, I feel very fortunate to have come of age in the 70’s, when America’s greatness was at its pinnacle. I feel it’s been downhill since then. There are plenty of graphs and statistics that largely confirm my opinion, but I think the basic cause of today’s central problem is the loss of something that doesn’t show up in any of the graphs or statistics. It was spelled out in a 1968 Diana Ross song, R E S P E C T. What we’ve lost is respect, respect for our government, respect for science, and respect for each other. Without respect, the principle of “United we stand, divided we fall.” falls apart. It is a prayer of mine that this time in history represents the extreme swing of history’s

We need adequate rider services for seniors and handicapped in South County Thursday afternoon around 2 PM Pat Patterson and I were leaving his cabin on Sandlake Road to go to Bear Creek Cafe. As I was about to pull on to Sandlake Road I noticed a crippled lady walking east towards Highway 101. She was obviously handicapped, limping with a cane and a disabled arm. I asked her if there was anyway that we could help her. She said that she was try-

ing to get to Highway 101 so she could get into Tillamook. I asked her how far she had been walking? She said that she had been walking for about a mile and a half and she had recently suffered from a stroke. It was beginning to cloud up and about to begin raining. I told her to please get in my car and that we were going to the Bear Creek Cafe where perhaps she could get a ride from there into Tillamook. I found out that her name is Laurie and lives on Sand Lake Rd. Pat and I looked at each other and said, “We have got to get dial a ride to provide services for people like Laurie Blackburn and many others like her.” Laurie was able to get a ride into Tillamook shortly after we arrived. I hope that this information from our experience will help to promote adequate rider service for seniors and the handicapped in south county and Sand Lake area. Regards, Larry Stephens

ne of my biggest claims to fame is the fact that I have only worn one store-bought Halloween costume in my entire life. Call it tradition or insanity, I’m an extreme do-it-yourselfer when it comes to Halloween. So I’m excited to show off my costume designing skill during Downtown Trick-orTreat on October 29, when participating businesses will hand out candy to local trickor-treaters between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Last year, the Chamber successfully held its annual Downtown Trick-or-Treat with some modifications for state COVID regulations at the time. It was a highlight for the year, and we so enjoyed seeing all the creative costumes the kiddos wore. This year will be just as fun — though it is a little bit more flexible now that state guidelines have changed. Here’s how it will work: Participating businesses will set up a table or other means of handing out candy in front of their building. Keeping the trick-or-treating outside of businesses ensures that shops don’t get overcrowded, and

t is time for part two of our staff’s earliest recollections of the library. First up is Librarian Kelsey’s memories of coming to the Tillamook County Library as a child. For her, it was “really about the memory of sitting down for storytime. I can still see the shape of the room and the little raised box of carpet around all the shelves, a shade of orange, and then I remember getting book recommendations from Kathy when it was over and the kids and parents were milling about.” Kelsey also fondly remembers the special days when library employee Judy was the saran wrap expert for post-storytime treats. “Judy was always in charge of wrapping the cookies or treats for storytime, and I remember this because it was actually kind of difficult for my child hands to get her saran wrap packages open, trying to figure out where

the end was and not having lots of patience when a cookie was at stake.” Speaking of Judy, she still works for our library and she has some memories of her own. “Back in the good ole days we had a great neighborhood of families with kids that always interacted with each other. It was a big deal to get our very own library card. I remember we would all walk the four or five blocks to the library and were so excited with the books we could take home with us. I loved the smell of new books, and it was a special treat if we went to story time. In those days they used a check out punch card machine. When they punched our card, it had a metal strip and if you were fast enough you could tattoo your hand with the ink.” Courtney, who works at the library in Pacific City, has great memories of her elementary school library. “I found my favorite childhood books at the school library, Scrub Dog of Alaska and Gentle Ben by Walt Morey. I loved these books so much that I had my mom find the rest of the other books Walt Morey wrote so I could read those as well. And then I was hooked.” She credits those early years in the library as being instrumental in helping

her decide to pursue a career as a librarian. For Laurie, her best memories are associated with the feel of a real book in her hands. “While I understand the appeal of E-books, for me to hold the book in my hand and smell the scent of the paper, turning the pages as a rite of accomplishment, will always be my first love.” Laurie also is very appreciative of how much the librarians helped her children feel special when they went to the library. Kealani also mentioned the smell of library books as something she associates with childhood visits to the library. “It’s the smell of thousands of old books, books written on paper that no one uses any more, with covers that have been hand bound with actual thread. It’s slightly musty, but not moldy. It’s cozy, like being swaddled in an old afghan made by your grandma.” One of Kealani’s best memories from childhood was the day she was handed her first library card. “I still remember the feeling I had when the woman handed me my very own card, complete with my own signature on the back. I was so proud, so excited. I felt like a real grown-up. A plastic card, with my name on it. It’s the little things in life, truly.”

it adds a level of safety by giving everyone more area to space out. As for masks, the current state rules require you to wear a mask at outdoor events anytime you’re not able to maintain a six-foot distance from people who don’t live with you. That’s a little different than last year, when masks were required no matter what. This year we recommend bringing a mask, just in case, and wear it when you feel it necessary. We do ask that the ghosts, ghouls and parents who come out for treats practice patience while waiting to get their candy and don’t crowd any of tables. There will be

lots of kids out and about, and you may have to wait occasionally. I recommend using that time to admire other costumes or practice saying “trick-or-treat” in the most frightening ways! Trick-or-treating starts at 3 p.m. and end at 5 p.m. rain, shine or anything in between. Please note that not every business downtown will be participating, and that’s totally OK. There will be plenty of places to get candy, and most of the stops will be easy to identify with their outdoor tables or the bright orange flyer in their windows. And of course, I’ll be there, dressed up in my handmade costume and handing out candy from Chamber HQ. While I won’t spoil the surprise of what I decided to be this year for Halloween, I can give you a few hints to “chew” on: It’s sweet, colorful, totally nostalgic and back in my day only cost five cents! Beyond that, you’ll just have to bring your monsters and princesses, goblins and witches down to Downtown Trick-or-Treat from 3 – 5 p.m. October 29 to see the final product for yourself. See you there…if you dare!

sually, my last column of October features something spooky like spiders or bats to celebrate Halloween. But this year I am taking a different track and offering some ideas for autumn decorating using – what else? – succulents. It is no secret I have a new love affair with succulents and have been writing about them for several months now. But now that I have quite a selection…what can I do with them besides putting them in pots on all my window sills? Well, a friend from southern California sent me a couple of articles about using pumpkins as the base for a Halloween arrangement. A fun thing is they will last a long time and can be used for Thanksgiving decorations,

too. You will need to gather a pumpkin or squash of the size you want (I used a ‘Carnival’ squash because I liked the green and white stripes) and a variety of succulents in several sizes that will balance the size of your pumpkin. I used some black-toned Echeveria succulents as well as some black-tipped green ones and a type of trailing sedum.

A Halloween project You will also need a bag of the type of moss you prefer. If you chose to harvest moss from the woods, you will want to lay it out on newspaper to dry for a couple of days so it will hold to the glue. A can of spray craft adhesive and a hot glue gun or tacky glue will make the project easier and last longer. You may want to have a set of pruners at hand to trim any long stems from the succulents. If you happen to have a lazy Susan, placing the pumpkin on it will make it easier to spin around and place the moss and the succulents. I have a left-over one I used to use with my bonsai a few years ago that suits this project perfectly. You won’t cut into the pumpkin (or squash) at all,

and it will last a long time. But do trim off the stem if it is too long. You want a relatively flat top surface to work on. First, lay out the moss and succulents on top of the pumpkin so you will have an idea of where things will go before you glue them down. This way you can rearrange, add or subtract to suit your taste. Next, spray the top of the pumpkin with the adhesive spray. This is no time to skimp because you want a well-adhered base to work with. Should you not have spray adhesive, you can use hot glue. Glue the moss in several sections around the top of the pumpkin and press it down onto the adhesive so it will hold. Give it a few minutes to dry. (Take care in

using a hot glue gun…that glue is hot!) In the meantime, prepare your succulents. You will need to remove as much soil as possible and remove any shriveled leaves. Cut back the succulent stem to just above a node, leaving a little more than an inch of stem. Now take a sizeable spot of tacky glue or hot glue and place it on the moss. As with any floral arrangement with a “thriller, a filler and a spiller,” I like to start with a statement succulent and place it in a prominent place. Press this “thriller” succulent onto the glue and hold in place until dry. Then you can move to the next “filler” succulents: those that are perhaps a bit smaller or of a different variety. As with the first succulent, put the glue on the moss and then press the plant firmly. As you move around the pumpkin, fill in as much as you can with medium and small-sized plants. Now for the “spillers.” These can be trailing succulents like string-of-pearls, string-of-turtles, or donkey tails. (Don’t you love the names?) Or you can use trailing sedums from the garden. Tuck these into spots around the edges of the arrangement so they will hang down the sides of the pumpkin. Glue to

the moss as you did the other plants. You may find you have a few gaps but they can be filled in with extra pieces of moss or even lichen which give it a nice look. And “Voila!” A centerpiece for your table or an arrangement for your porch. Keep in mind, some of these succulents like the Echeveria can’t take extreme cold and none of them like a lot of rain, so they need to be protected from the weather. If you are keeping them inside, this is one case when you can spray the succulents when they start to look a little withered or if you start to see tiny root hairs forming. Once every week to ten days is plenty. Another tip for a table arrangement is to place a plate or clear plastic tray under the pumpkin to protect the table. Alternatively, a small piece of cardboard under the pumpkin will keep it from rotting too quickly. You can disguise this by additional moss around the base. Place your pumpkin in as much sun as possible so they retain their color and don’t start to stretch. At the end of the season, take a sharp knife and gently cut the succulents off the moss, above a node if you can, and re-root them as usual. Happy Halloween!

Now for the Bay City News: Thanks to the Tillamook County Library Foundation, holiday cookie decorating kits purchased by the foundation will be supplied to all branches and the bookmobile to enable patrons throughout the county to participate in this popular craft program. If you are not familiar with the foundation, it is a nonprofit founded in 1989, and was established to “accumulate and preserve an endowment, the interest from which is used to assist the Tillamook County Library system in realizing its mission: Empower residents and build a better community through learning, knowledge, and inspiration.” I believe they have more than fulfilled their mission. The Methodist church has resumed in-person worship as of October 24th and they will also continue to livestream on their Facebook page, https:// www.Facebook.com/baycityoregonumc/live/. They continue to “provide the safest environment possible” and ask if you attend in person

OBITUARIES Wilford Dean Rock July 31, 1925 - Oct. 10, 2021

ilford “Bill” Dean Rock died October 10, 2021, in Cloverdale, Oregon after 96 years of a life well-lived. Bill was born in Oretown, Oregon on July 31, 1925, to John and Evelyn Etzwiler Rock. He grew up on the family dairy farm originally homesteaded by his grandfather. Bill attended Oretown Primary School and Nestucca High School, graduating in 1943. During high school Bill was active in sports and FFA. He was elected vicepresident of the Oregon FFA. Bill next attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). He joined Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, the Dairy Club and the dairy judging team. Bill graduated from OSC in 1950 with a BS in Agriculture. After graduating from OSC, Bill returned to Oretown and the dairy farm. Soon after he met Patricia “Pat” Mullin, a new teacher at Nestucca High. They married in 1954 and began 66 years together before Pat passed away in 2020. They started a

family in 1955 with the birth of their son Randy, followed by daughters Amy and Betsy within the next few years. During this time, they expanded the farm operations by moving to a new property in Cloverdale where they raised their family. Bill was an active community member serving with the TCCA Board, the Tillamook County Fair Board, and a supporter of Bobcat athletics. He was also a 30-year member of the Nestucca Valley Lions Club. One of Bill’s pet projects that he is well-known for is “the Tree”, the 280-foot lighted outline of a Christmas tree erected each holiday season on the Oretown farm hill Bill was proceeded in death by his parents and brother Stanley, his wife Pat, son Randy and grandson Will Seymour. He is survived by his daughters Amy Seymour and her husband Rob, and Betsy Rock and her husband Alan Fudge; grandchildren John Seymour and his wife Kaylie, Van Fudge, Leith Seymour, Drummond Fudge and his partner Michaela Martens; great-grandchildren Lochlan Seymour and Emilia Seymour; sister Linda Bailey; and his nieces, nephews and cousins. Remembrances in Bill’s honor can be made to Nestucca athletics, the Oretown Cemetery Association or Heifer International. A celebration of life for both Bill and Pat Rock will be held in November. Details will be announced.

Leonard Leroy Langley, Sr. July 10, 1937 – Oct. 16, 2021

eonard was born at Fort Duchesne, Utah to Roy and Delia Langley where Roy had moved to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps. After completion of work for the CCCs, the family returned to Roy’s birthplace of Grand Ronde, Oregon and then settled in the Tillamook area where Leonard attended Sacred Heart High School and met the love of his life, Rose Didier. An avid homebody, family man, and outdoorsman, Len and Rose raised their family of five boys where he taught them the essentials of hunting, fishing, harvesting the area’s bounty of seafood and plants, and how to enjoy the little things of life and family by just “going for a ride” in the woods or along the coast and spending

time together. Leonard was a sports enthusiast and sports played an important role in his life whether that was coaching and playing men’s slow pitch and fast pitch softball; coaching youth baseball; golfing with family and friends; listening to Mooks games on KTIL; traveling to watch his grandchildren participate in sports; or the many rousing rounds of cards, badminton, croquet, lawn darts, or wiffle ball in the backyard where his laughter would ring out as he enjoyed a particular play or the pure enjoyment of family and friends being together. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Rose; his brother Jack (Linda); his sons Leonard Jr., John (Pamela), Michael (Jeannette), and Craig (Shelley); daughter-in-law Kristine, and his grandchildren Lacey, Ashley, Mathew, Ethan, Adam, Merritt, and Jesse; and his great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Kelly; his parents, Roy and Delia; his father-inlaw and mother-in-law, Al and Louise Didier; and his sister, Beryle. Leonard will be interred at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Per his request there will not be any services.

and Emma Buchler, and sister Margaret Crawford. John is survived by his sister Aggie Dentel and her children Sheila, Tony, and Deney, and Margaret’s children Deborah, Suzanna, Monica, Michael, Gretchen, Judy and Nancy. John was born in Tillamook where he lived most of his life at the family farm in the South Prairie area. He is remembered as a lover of the outdoors, and a passionate gardener. He was an avid Blazer fan and could often be seen in the bleachers of Tillamook High School home sports games. A memorial will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery on November 7, at 11a.m.

od called his warrior angel Patricia Ann Booi (Pat), 71, of Longview, WA, into his arms on Sept. 8, 2021, at 2:40 p.m. Pat, was born on Jan. 13, 1950, to Anna D Dodson Roberts of Portland, OR. Pat attended PPS for 6 years before moving to Colton, OR where she graduated with the class of ‘69. After high school Pat immediately began her nearly 20 year military career obtaining the rank of P7/FCS. She fought for our country nobly until forced into early retirement after MS diagnosis. She received an honorable discharged so she could begin this new battle for her life. On Sept 4, 1986; Pat was blessed with son Sean M Booi. Pat was a devoted mother, sister, wife, aunt and friend. Often times it was said she’d give the shirt off her own back to help someone in need. Pat raised her son, Sean, in Tillamook, OR, for 20 years; before moving her family to Longview, WA in 2006. Pat fought her MS valiantly for over 30 yrs, until finally succumbing to complications of the Covid-19 virus.

She has been received in heaven by her mother, Anna D Dodson Roberts, her stepfather Robert R Roberts; her brother James B Dodson; her sister Aloma Dodson; and her Step brother Robert Roberts. She is survived by her devoted son Sean Booi his wife Terasa Hendry; her siblings Carol Caulford; Marsha Goldspink; Duane Dodson Jr; Carmelita Williams; Michael Roberts; her step siblings Anna Roberts, Faith Roberts; her grandchildren Damian Minch, her granddaughter Elizabeth Dodson; and her many nieces and nephews. illiam (Bill) Newman passed away on Thursday October 14th. He went out on a hunting trip and sadly didn’t make it back. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He lived in Tillamook County for over 20 years, and had so many friends in the community. He was a log scaler at Hampton Lumber and retired in 2008. He was a longtime patron of the YMCA and went swimming every morning. He worked at the Tillamook Senior Center for the last 14 years and went above

and beyond in the assistance he provided. He loved children and spent most days visiting his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His loss will be felt by many. William leaves behind his mother Dorothy Newman, daughter Amanda, son Jonathan (April), brother James (Liz), grandchildren; Jaelynne Newman, Sadie Newman and Mason Newman, nieces; Jessica (Eric) and Debbie (Brent), great nieces and nephews; Caitlin, Jackson, Samantha, Graham, Chloe and James, his loving partner Barbara Renteria and her family, which includes 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The Association has requested that the State identify who received this information and to take steps to recover the information. The Association has by letter requested the Oregonian and the Statesman Journal to return the information and deleted it from their files. The Association should not have to make this request, but the Association at this point cannot depend on the Department of Administrative Services to follow up on their error. The Oregon State Police Officers Association remains committed to looking after its members and will take the appropriate steps to remedy this situation. The Association has asked the State to disclose the specific information released, and who it was released to. The Association has filed the appropriate grievance under the contract with the State and other veterans’ interviews posted on the VFW Facebook page and on YouTube by November 11th. fellow man didn’t end with the end of the war. When Bub came home, he continued a life of service to his community with the same dedication that he gave to his country. He worked as a logger, married, and started a family. Then In 1958 he went to work for the city of Bay City. He was responsible for putting in the citywide sewer and water system that included Tillamook Cheese Factory, obtained grants for small businesses, and put in a computer system in the city office. Bub oversaw the building of the library and city hall, was an active member in city council, and in 1977 became Mayor of Bay City and served for 10 years. Wait there’s more.... Bub was also Chief of Police and a volunteer firefighter. Yes, he is a hero to our country, but he is also a hero to his family, friends, and to the citizens of Bay City. On behalf of the citizens of Bay City, we thank you. And from me “Bless your heart Bub Simmons.” Thank you for reading the Fencepost, and I will see you next week.

Juntos Family Night: Dia de los Muertos Celebration T

he COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many aspects of our lives, including how we interact with our family, friends, and communities. This last year and a half has placed a spotlight on just how important our personal relationships are to our overall wellbeing. As we head into another holiday season, it’s worth taking a moment to consider how celebrating collective traditions can also be an important piece in building a healthy, happy life. This October, the Juntos Club will be holding space for community members to celebrate Dia de los Muertos here in Tillamook: Día de los Muertos dates back to pre-Spanish colonization, where the Mesoamerican groups would celebrate those who had passed. The arrival of the Spanish combined

the Mesoamerican groups’ celebrations with the catholic holidays, All saints and All soul’s day. Families honor the dead by bringing offerings to the gravesites or by building ofrendas (alters) in their homes. The ofrendas are decorated with photos of the departed, food, drink, candles, and Xempasuchil (marigold). During this two-day period, it’s believed that the border between the living world and the spirit world dissipates allowing the souls of the dead to return to the living world to celebrate with their families. In celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, Juntos will be hosting a family night on October 29th at OSU Extension. Families are invited to join for pan dulce, refreshments and participate in helping create an ofrenda to honor past loved ones. To celebrate and protect our friends and family with us the Tillamook Community
