illamook County Health Department reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Oct. 13, 14 COVID-19 cases for the weekend case count from Friday, Oct. 8, through Sunday, Oct. 10. The 7-day case count from Oct. 3 through Oct. 9 was 26. The 14-day case count from Sept. 26 through Oct. 9 was 55. “When we talk about our breakthrough rate, from Sept. 26 through Oct. 2, it was 75.6 percent of new COVID-19 cases were not vaccinated versus 24.4 percent statewide were breakthrough cases [in the state],” Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said. “Here in the county through the end of September, it was 74.2 percent not vaccinated versus 25.8 percent vaccine breakthrough cases for Tillamook County.” The county’s death toll is at 26 deaths, as of Oct. 12. Twenty-three of these individuals were unvaccinated, one had no vaccine record and two were fully vaccinated. There are six confirmed outbreaks and 15 under monitoring, Colson said. Oregon Health Authority confirmed outbreaks, as of Oct. 13, at Fred Meyer with 31 COVID-19 cases, Adventist Health with a total of 24 cases, and Tillamook County Creamery Association with 20 cases. Monoclonal antibody treatment is available in Tillamook County. “These treatments require provider referral after a positive COVID-19 test,” Colson said. “This treatment is given through our onetime IV infusion currently at Adventist Health Hospital in Tillamook.” Colson said on average, 30 individuals have been tested at each of the testing days throughout the week at the fairgrounds. “Last week, we had on Monday, 34; Wednesday, 36; and Friday, 26,” Colson said. Due to the decrease in demand for testing, drive up testing at the convention center ends after Friday, Oct. 15, Colson said. COVID-19 testing is still available at the health center’s acute care clinic. To make an appointment with the health center, call 503-842-3900. “Our vaccine rates in October so far are averaging about 35 per day,” Colson said. “We had 31 last Tuesday and 37 on Thursday.” Pfizer and BioNTech have submitted a request to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization for those ages 5-11. Colson said the ruling by the FDA is expected in early November. It would then go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee and then to the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, and finally to Oregon Health Authority for authorizing use. “Booster shots for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are going to follow the same steps,” Colson said. “We expect to have a decision in mid-October from the FDA.” A booster dose for Pfizer has been authorized for those who have completed the two-dose series at least six months ago. These eligible groups include people 65 years of age or older, those with underlying health conditions, those who live in long-term care settings, and those who work in high-risk settings such as teachers and grocery workers.

Rep. Kurt Schrader hosts virtual town hall for district C

itizens throughout Oregon’s 5th Congressional District sat in on a virtual town hall Tuesday, Oct. 12, to hear from U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader. Schrader addressed questions on prescription drug pricing, the Violence Against Women Act and the Jan. 6 attack on the state Capitol. Schrader said he has been in favor of drug pricing negotiations and for the last two years, he has been trying for some alternatives for drug pricing and he said the U.S. House of Representatives has come up with a bill that he believes hits the mark. The proposed Reduced Costs and Continued Cures Act would lower patients’ prescription drug costs. The plan is the first to cap out-of-pocket costs for seniors. “Seniors can have huge, uncontrolled out-of-pocket costs when they get past their insurance cover-

Commissioners approve new location added for needle exchange events T

he Tillamook County Board of Commissioners approved during a meeting Wednesday, Oct. 13, an agreement for an additional location for harm reduction needle exchanges. The health department has been holding these needle exchange events since April. “We currently hold an event on the first and third Wednesdays of each month in the CARE parking lot,” Tillamook County Public Health Representative Tara Stevens said. “We’d held a total of 11 events to date.” Stevens said the health department usually sees about three individuals at each of the events. These individuals will sometimes exchange syringes and pick up supplies for other people.
“We estimate we’ve reached a total of 43 unique individuals represented by those attendees,” Stevens said. “We’ve seen a handful of individuals return to an exchange once more.” To date, the health department has exchanged 13,829 syringes and provided 69 sharps containers, Stevens added. “We have distributed 54 Narcan kits and 23 Naloxone kits and many safe injection and wound care kits in addition to information on services in our county or nearby,” Stevens said. The health department has worked with Tillamook Family Counseling Center to come up with the agreement to include the counseling center’s Ivy Avenue Wellness Center as a location for an event. Stevens said the agreement outlines the use of the build-
ing, parking lot and supply storage auctions. The health department is also looking to reach more people by looking for locations in north and south county. Chair Mary Faith Bell said she supports harm reduction. Commissioner Erin Skaar said it is a way for people to get healthier. “It’s a way to help people who have substance use disorder or opioid use disorder stay safe while they are using and have an opportunity to be connected to services when they are ready to be able to end their usage of the drugs,” Skaar said. “It’s a really, really important service.” The commissioners approved the agreement. Betsy Johnson, of Warren, announced Thursday on her Facebook page that she is running for Oregon Governor, “as an independent leader unaffiliated with any party and loyal only to the people of Oregon.” The Oregonian first reported Johnson’s announcement following her Facebook post. The following is Johnson’s Facebook letter. Dear Friends: With an election for Governor fast approaching, Oregonians are eager for a fresh start and new leadership. But having to choose between another left-wing liberal promising more of the same or a right-wing Trump apologist – is no choice at all. Oregonians deserve better than the excesses and nonsense of the extreme left and radical right. Oregonians are ready to move to the middle where sensible solutions are found. That’s why I have decided to run for Governor as an independent leader unaffiliated with any party and loyal only to the people of Oregon. I will be a no-nonsense leader with the backbone and life experience to tame the partisan excesses and with the humility to know that delivering results matters more than who gets credit. As Governor, I will force the two parties to work together to put Oregon ahead of narrow partisan politics. Our campaign will be like no other in Oregon history – because the stakes for Oregon’s future have never been higher. Freed from the distraction of a primary election, I will formally launch my general election campaign after the first of the year. Governor Tom McCall, in his first inaugural address, urged Oregonians to “put aside the temptations to be guided by regionalism, factionalism, or anything which fragments the public interest.” Tom McCall was a maverick Governor the likes of which we have not seen since. I believe we need leadership that reaches beyond partisan labels and geographic boundaries and that unites Oregonians around our shared values. 45th annual Kite Festival slated for Oct. 22-24 The 45th annual Rockaway Beach Kite Festival will take place Friday, Oct. 22, through Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Rockaway Beach Wayside. The Arts and Kite Festival took place earlier this month. The annual Kite Festival is dedicated to the memory of Ann Swain. Swain was a chamber and community volunteer for many years. Sponsored by the American Kitefliers Association, the festival hosts professional and amateur kit fliers. As the largest organized group of kiters in the world, the
association travels all over to spread the joy of kiting to people of all ages and skills. The event offers contests in a friendly, unofficial environment. Participants can compete to win awards for the nicest kite, the kite that drags on the ground the longest before becoming airborne, etc. Kite enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their own kites to fly. The festival also features live music, kite exhibitions, an array of vendors and artisans, and meals all weekend.
Agencies respond to shop fire, no injuries Staff Nehalem Bay Fire, Garibaldi Fire and Rockaway Fire were dispatched for a report of a large shop on fire at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, on Miami Foley Road. According to Nehalem Bay Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Chris Beswick, when units arrived on scene, they found a threebay shop, approximately 1,200 square feet, fully involved. The fire was quickly brought under control; however, the shop was a total loss. There was no damage to surrounding structures, and no injuries either to the residents or responders. The cause of the fire is officially undetermined, but a malfunctioning heat lamp in a chicken coop is suspected, Beswick said.

Foundation Awarded Grant to Support CTE Students This fall, the Tillamook Bay Community College Foundation was awarded a $15,000 grant from The Roundhouse Foundation to support students enrolled in a CareerTechnical Education Program. The grant helps cover costs associated with supplies and program fees. “The intent is to lessen the barrier for these students to participate in these programs,” said Britta Lawrence, Development Director for the TBCC Foundation. “This is the inaugural year this grant has been funded, and TBCC feels very lucky to have been selected as a recipient.” The TBCC Foundation has already awarded close to $3,000 of the grant this
fall to assist TBCC Students. Lawrence said students do not need to apply for the funding; it is automatically credited to their account when they enroll in a qualified CTE program. The grant helps students who may need things like boots or gloves for welding; scrubs and stethoscopes for the healthcare programs; and fingerprinting, and licensing requirements for EMTs, among other things that a student would typically pay for out of pocket. Tillamook Bay Community College has CTE degrees and certificates in the fields of healthcare, manufacturing and industrial technology, agricultural technology, criminal justice, and business administration. The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021, passed in the House and sent to the Senate, modifies and reauthorizes programs and activities that seek to prevent and respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. Schrader said women’s reproductive rights are also under siege right now. “In this country, we need to stand strong for women’s reproductive rights,” Schrader said.

ast week, Captain Pete wrote a paragraph for this column describing his 30th annual Hogs ’r’ Runnin’ salmon derby and its official results. But I have sources beyond him. This week, you’ll hear the rest of the story… Equipment problems were rampant during the derby. One participant had the reel fall off his rod. Two boats had trailer troubles that required them to exit the derby early. One couple had to buy a brand-new motor to be in the derby. Moving on from equipment to bureaucratic issues, one party couldn’t get his boat registered in time; he and his
wife had to catch a ride with another participant. Now on to perhaps what could best be described as clumsiness, two guys in the same boat lost their cell phones. One man lost his wedding ring, but his fishing partner (his wife)
eventually found it in the bottom of the boat. And now for the category of bad luck: One entrant snagged a salmon in the tail, and it wiped out the fishing lines of all the clients in a nearby guide boat. One boat hauled in a record number of fish (six) on Friday, but all were wild coho that had to be released. The next day, Saturday, when fishers could retain one wild coho (if they had not done so earlier in the season), this same boat had no bites at all. Now you have it; the rest of the derby story. What good news! The Cape Meares Community Association’s Social Commit-
tee announced there will be a Halloween potluck for Cape Meares residents on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Barbara Bennett Community Center. Please bring a ghoulish dish and BYOB. Water and soda will be provided. Attendance requires a full vaccination status and a mask; you may remove your mask as you enjoy your meal. Looking forward to seeing all you neighbors in person again! Hunting season is in full swing. We have a couple of neighbors who are off deer hunting in central Oregon, and others who are hunting here. This might be a good

he buzz of a chain saw can be heard most mornings on Parkway Drive in Cloverdale. My neighbor, Jacob Trent, (Nestucca class of 2003 who attended school with my own kids) is creating lifelike wood sculptures in the carport next door even as I write. Jacob tells me that he learned the craft from a family friend who is a true woodsman. Tools of the trade include a grinder with attachments, including the chainsaw. Works in progress include fish, water birds, eagles and a wolf; they are
stunningly realistic. Jacob’s pieces are on display on his Facebook page and viewable by appointment through Facebook Messenger. A selection of the work is offered at

Wee the People
overwhelmed, confused and powerless. I believe it’s on purpose. Thomas Jefferson believed that our legal system and form of government should be designed so that the common man could comprehend it. There’s nothing I comprehend about the Progressive Movement as it relates to the Constitution or the American way of life.
What ever happened to “We the People…”? What happened to individual God given rights and freedoms? What happened to bottom up government of the people, by the people, for the people? As the Progressive / Socialist movement sweeps across this country it feels like I/we no longer have a voice. I, meaning the individual, the individual is the largest minority. As we take are marching orders from a top down, faceless, centralized government, we the people no longer have a seat at the table. With ever increasing mandates, legislation, closed door meetings, in the name of the greater good, it’s difficult to figure out which end is up or what is going on within government. By the time we the people hear about change it’s already been done. In an age of information overload, complicated legislation, mandates, etc. it’s no wonder people feel

Wheeler: A brighter future for whom? Recently, an article was posted on the Oregon Coast Alliance (ORCA) website under the “News” and “Victories” tabs. The title of the article was “Wheeler: The End of the Ulbricht Project and the Beginning of a Brighter Future.” The article was about, once again, stopping a developer from building on waterfront property. However, the title of the article is misleading because the project is not at
an end. For years, a small group of Wheeler citizens has vocally opposed a potential development in our small village. In the face of this opposition, other voices and other opinions have been drowned out. Has yours? Will Wheeler have a “brighter future” if development is stifled? Probably not. Do you really want to sit back and let only one small group determine the future for Wheeler? We urge our neighbors to become acquainted with all sides of the current, proposed development plans and any future plans. Take time to learn about the options and make your voices heard about what you believe to be in the best interests of Wheeler. t is hard to run a library during an ongoing pandemic. Of course, this difficulty is shared by all businesses and organizations, as well. We are all in the same boat while we operate outside our comfort zones. Being a part of the county government, the library operations are overseen by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). This is an important partnership, but we could not effectively communicate with the BOCC without an effective leader, and that leader is our director, Geri Godber. It is Geri’s job to shepherd the staff and the library board to come up with a grand plan of operations, then relay this information to the BOCC. During normal times this is a giant task, but trying to come up with a plan during chaotic times like these is even harder.

I thought I would pick Geri’s brain for this column to get her take on what big ideas are directing her vision of getting us a little closer to normal. Geri’s first priority is to put the patrons’ needs first. How will she accomplish this? Geri says, “We recognize people miss being able to come to the library for programs or just hang out. As COVID flareups threatened to close us down, I have concentrated on ways of keeping us open. Since we can’t have big programs right now, I have the staff working to put together take-home crafting kits for patrons.” This idea has been widely embraced and is now expanded to include take-home crafts for children. We are also making sure we have an online storytime posted on our YouTube channel weekly. One other way Geri is putting the patrons’ need first is to continually coach the staff on the importance of excellent customer service. “It is so important that patrons have a good customer service experience each and every time they come to the library.

As part of the redesign — and building off my own background as a local reporter — we added space for six short articles that tell a deeper story of Tillamook. I really love these articles, which cover everything from one resident’s discovery of outdoor recreational opportunities right in her backyard, to the reason why our county fair is better than the rest. They showcase the values and personality of this community in a way that an informational blurb about local services can’t. They add the “lifestyle” content to this lifestyle and relocation guide. The plan is to change out those articles each edition of the magazine. That means there will always be something new to read in Tilla-

he second edition of the Tillamook Living Magazine arrived at the Chamber last month, and it feels like it’s all I’ve been able to talk about since. I see so much potential in this locally produced lifestyle and relocation guide, which is available through the Chamber and at several of our member businesses! As you may already know, the Chamber started publishing Tillamook Living last year. The idea for the magazine was born out of several conversations with local businesses, organizations, real estate agents and other community leaders about how we could highlight our community to attract and retain talented workers, as well as help newcomers settle in as they moved to Tillamook. This year the magazine went through a major redesign. We started from scratch, rewriting all the content, refreshing photos and constructing a totally new layout. Yes, it was intimidating to look at a blank sheet and build a 60-page publication. But the final product is a seriously impressive resource that the entire Chamber team can be proud of.

Also, we’re excited to tell you we will soon be adding a couple new services. It is a bit too early to announce exactly what those items are, so stay tuned!” Beyond the immediate improvements mentioned above, the library is always looking into the future by focusing on a strategic plan. Geri says she will soon be “reaching out to the public for ideas so we can continue to serve the public at the highest level possible.” We are hoping when that call goes out that you will respond with lots of ideas! Here are her thoughts and memories of her time visiting grandma and grandpa at the beach: The coast has always been a big part of my life. Growing up in the valley of Oregon some of my favorite memories were driving to Bay City and spending the
day at the beach. Whether we were celebrating our family’s “grandma camp” or going to lunch at The Dutch Mill, it was always an amazing day. I was so excited and honored when I found out I was able to be a part of writing this week’s Fencepost. Bay City has been like a second home to me for a long as I can remember. I participated in my first ever business venture as an entrepreneur at the Oyster Festival. Another one of my favorite memories was when the whole city went to the Christmas tree lighting and even the rain couldn’t stop our Christmas spirit.
I will never forget playing my pink guitar with my pink cowgirl hat and matching boots with Benny and the Bay City Rockers and signing and playing my little heart out. A message that I thought I would share is a quote by Sandy Gingras, “The beach, life is different, time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun” and on that note I think everyone should have a grandma and grandpa that lives at the beach. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Original friend of Wave misses services I am Pat Patterson at age 97 writing this letter to complain about the Tillamook County Transportation District. I with Bob Kenny, Jack Graves and other original founders of the District went door to door and the tax payers all pitched in and agreed to fund a COUNTY SPECIAL DISTRICT to bring public transporation to the citizens. At my age now I may still have my drivers license but I had been proud of the service from the local volunteers here in the South County who knew me and the other citizens and could provide affordable transporation with dial a ride van that was parked right here in Pacific City available for us local citizens. After the volunteers where gotten rid of things really did change but not for the better. I went to a board meeting by telephone a couple of years ago and asked for the volunteers to be kept and not forgotten as we did have people who actually did a good job and did not waste tax payer dollars caring about us in the South County, but now they are gone. And what is left here? We have buses that do not even go down our Sandlake Road but go with maybe 2 or 3 peole on them driving along the business sections of town. Sometimes we even see empty buses there. For a parking lot to keep it from being over crowded and to keep the businesses taken care of that is just fine. But we are being forgotten as the local citizens who pay the tax dollars that were
being spent carefully to take care of us. We need a bus to travel down our road where the seniors like myself and other citizens who need regular transportation to serve US! The Sandlake Road does meet with highway 101. My suggestion is also to work with the Artichoke Farm Store with the big parking lot where a bus could turn around with the owners making an agreement for a bus stop there. I know widows and other seniors who live down here in my Sandlake Road neighborhood who are stuck without transporation and we need some help with more local citizens also raising their concerns. Dial a Ride used to serve me as a former original Board Member. We had an agreement after serving the board for so many years to serve a former board member with transporation as I would grow older, but that does not seem to be honored. My daughter Dee actually complained to the management about how I was not being provided dial a ride services when it was an important thing to do. As a World War 2 Coast Guard Veteran serving here with Japan sending submarines along our coast line I was also the lat keeper of the Cape Meares Lighthouse when it was in operation. The National Archives of the nation came to Garibaldi and wanted me to come be interviewed and recorded to share my experiences. I had a ride from dial a ride scheduled to take me but I turned out to be sick that day, so we requested it be rescheduled for the following week. Instead of letting me know right away that
it could not work out, we did not get the dial a ride to take me. Instead a friend had to drive to Sandlake Road from Netarts to get me and take me in his personal vehicle. My daughter Dee who is my caregiver living nextdoor called in to make a complaint. There was no apology. She and Larry Stephens attended a Board Meeting for Public Comment to complain as well. They asked for the District to send each of them a written public document to review that would be a complaint procedure back in May 2021. It is October 2021 and we have never received that either in the mail. We don’t have a computer at home, and we citizens are not ALL just on the internet, or reading Facebook for our information on a County Transporation District. We need our Tillamook County Transporation District to be more people to people, just like we were when I helped the original Friends of the Wave get a Board together after the local citizens passed a property tax. Now at 97 years old and not wanting to drive my car much at this time in my life, I watch the dial a ride vans travel up and down Sandlake Road, but I don’t really see how they are going to be serving me at my own address. As an original 97 year old Friend of the Wave, I have stated my concerns here in this letter because my own duahgter never even got an apology. Applications for Christmas Basket program available now The Christmas holiday season is fast approaching and once again the Tillamook Ecumenical Committee is ready. For 12 years, the Tillamook Ecumenical Committee, a faith-based organization, has chaired this holiday program of giving. The ecumenical community of churches has combined their efforts to supply Christmas baskets/gifts into one location to make it possible for everyone who needs a holiday meal. The applications to apply for a Christmas Basket will be available beginning Oct. 18, through CARE, 2310 1st St Tillamook. The TEC is encouraging families and individuals that require a Christmas meal and a gift for their family, to apply. The applications will be available starting Oct. 18. n loving memory of Geraldine Lee (Kunkle) Veland Geraldine “Geri” Veland, age 85, passed away on August 18th, 2021, in Garibaldi, Oregon. She was born October 9, 1935, in Scio, Oregon, the daughter of late Sidney and Caroline Kunkle. She had a passion for gardening and an amazing talent in canning. She devoted much of her time, energy and love to her family and friends. She was one of the sweetest (nick-
named “Sweetie”) people you could ever meet; she opened her heart and home to so many over the years and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She is survived by her loving partner, Lloyd Bettis; children Deelda Childs, Carol Ann (Peter) Bush, Cindy (Milt) Lagerquist, and Casey (Lois) Wood, step son Brian (Julie) Bettis; siblings Jack (Patsy) Kunkle, and Bill Kunkle; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 greatgreat grandchild; and so many extended family and friends. Geri is preceded in death by her husbands Glenn Wood and Al Velund, her son Ken Wood, and daughter Glenda Wood. Dale Otis Palmer Sept. 9, 1952 - Oct. 10, 2021

ale Palmer was born on September 9 1952 in Seaside OR to parents, Betty and Ellwood Palmer. He passed away due to cancer on Sunday October 10th with his daughter by his side. He grew up on the Miami Foley Road (Barnsdale), alongside his horse Frosty, where he discovered his talent for mechanicing as a kid. He attended Neah Kah Nie High School. After high school, he worked as a mechanic at Chevrolet in Tillamook before joining bottle distribution companies, [[Garland, Tillamook Wholesale and Royal Distributing]], driving pop and beer to the local bars and stores. Dale loved water skiing, snow skiing, and partying with friends and cousins. He enjoyed barbeque and was known for aging local cheeses for decades. He loved watch-
ing history programs, gardening, spending time with his grandchildren and feeding all the neighborhood animals. Dale is survived by his daughter, Teresa Cochran and her family (husband Mike and grandchildren Hunter, Brody, Macie and Maxton), his sons Dale Palmer and Rob Powell (and wife Cyndi), his sister Dixie and a wide circle of other family relations including his cousins, his nephew Mark Whitten and niece Cheri Cunningham and her family (husband Dale and daughters Kristen and Erica). He will sadly be missed by all his friends and family. Funeral arrangements are in care of Waud’s Funeral Home. Dale’s burial will take place at the Pioneer Cemetery, Nehalem, at 1pm on Friday October 22nd. Donations may be made to support cancer treatment.

andra (Paulson) Mattson was born November 10, 1949, to Kenneth Paulson and Gladys McGilvary. She grew
attendee of community events, high school reunions, and going out with her friends. Sandy passed during her second battle with breast cancer. Sandy is survived by her children, Brad Mattson and Kari Fleisher, and their spouses, cousins, nieces and nephews, granddaughters, and granddogs. She was devoted to her family and proud of their accomplishments. A celebration of life is yet to be determined, and a graveside gathering will be occurring in Ashland, where she will be laid to rest with her parents and siblings.

oby was born in Tillamook on July 3, 1964 and passed away on October 11, 2021. He was born in Tillamook Oregon to Donna Kleinsmith (Awe) and Neal Kleinsmith. Toby was adopted by Thomas Awe when he was 2 years old. He grew up in Tillamook and graduated from Tillamook High School in 1983. He left Tillamook to go to ITT Mechanic School in
Arizona. Next, he left to work on a bridge construction site in Idaho. There he had an accident that left him in a coma for a month and was unable to work again. Toby bought some land up in the East Beaver Creek area and enjoyed his peace and quiet times. He always had a dog by his side. He had many friends that would come up and helped him with his cars. Toby is survived by his mother Donna Awe-Berge, his brother Kelly & Kristi Awe, nephew Kellen Awe, and uncles Thomas Miller, Bob Bailey, and aunt Pat St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a contribution to Animal Haven by the Sea in Nehalem, Oregon. There will be a memorial service at Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook, Oregon on Tuesday October 19th at noon.

Sandra (Paulson) Mattson Nov. 10, 1949 - 2021 up in Shady Cove, OR. After graduating from Eagle Point High School in 1967, she married Bradley Mattson, a navy veteran, in Oct 1973. After a tragic accident that put her husband into a care center, Sandy moved into downtown Nehalem and lovingly raised Bradley and Kari as a single mother. Sandy was a devoted mom volunteering and working for Neah-Kah-Kie School District, a cub scout leader, and cooking at local restaurants. Her food at Nina’s Italian restaurant and later at Tillamook Adventist Hospital was well-liked. She was an avid

ohn Baptist (Johnny) Buchler from Bay City died on September 20 at the age of 82. John was preceded in death
Prairie area. He is remembered as a lover of the outdoors, and a passionate gardener. He was an avid Blazer fan and could often be seen in the bleachers of Tillamook High School home sports games. A family memorial will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery where he will join his family.

The Tillamook Cheesemakers celebrated Homecoming all week long, with anticipation of taking their 5-2 overall record and 3-0 record atop the Cowapa League standings to test against the Valley Catholic Valiants Friday at home. The Valiants had to forfeit their second game in a row due to player shortages, so the administration set up a Homecoming match-up against fourth ranked Marshfield Pirates under the Friday night lights in Tillamook. Tillamook, who is rated ninth overall in OSAA rankings, played the Pirates tough the first half out producing the offensive powerhouse 187 yards of offense compared to the Pirates 167 total offensive yards. Marshfield set the tone early when DJ Daugherty took the opening kickoff for the Pirates 81 yards for a quick score. Tillamook got the ball and made a nice drive down to the Marshfield seven yard line but turned the ball over on downs. The Mook defense stepped up and made a Pirate stop
and got the ball back after the Pirates went three and out. The Mooks offense got the ball back and made another nice drive down to the Marshfield 15 years line. On second down speedster Tanner Hoskins took the ball in from the 8 yard line for the first Mooks score. The point after was good and Tillamook was tied at 7-7. Marshfield got the ball back after a kickoff went out of bounds. On the next play from scrimmage, Pirate power runner, Miguel Velazquez took it 57 yards for a score. With the point after attempt no good, Marshfield led at the end of the first quarter 13-7. Marshfield got the ball back early in the second quarter of play after the Mooks offense suffered the loss for the game and probably the season when Tanner Hoskins went down early in the period. Hoskins was checked out by medical personnel on the sidelines and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. According to reports from the family’s Facebook page, Hoskins suffered a hairline fracture of a vertebrae in his neck, he will be out the remaining two games against
Seaside and Banks, but hopefully will be ready for Basketball season. Hoskins was back home with family Saturday and according to his father, the first thing Tanner asked in the hospital was, “did we win?” Teammates, coaches, friends and fans are all happy to hear Tanner is back home doing well. Hoskins is a huge loss for the Mooks offensive and special teams attack and is the school’s kick return record holder running a kick return last week against Astoria during Senior Night 99 yards for a score (see related sidebar story). After the Pirates got the ball back after the Hoskins injury, the mood in the entire stadium was quiet. The Mooks would have to do with out their speedy sophomore who added so many dimensions to their offensive attack. The Pirates added two more scores in the second quarter and took a 27-13 lead into the locker room. Marshfield added three more scored in the second half of play, the final score was 49-13 for the Mooks loss. Tillamook is still 3-0 in the Cowapa League standings,

OBITUARIES Anna K. Smith Sept. 5, 1929 - 2021
A
nna Kathryn Masters was born Sept. 5th 1929 to Thomas Henry Masters and Emma Frances Streeter Masters at home eight miles southwest of Burlingame Kansas. Anna attended a one room schoolhouse in district 98 and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1947. Anna had two brothers, Daniel Thomas, and George Franklin. She married Joe Allen Tomlinson II on August 29th 1947. They had six children together Emma JoAnn, Daniel Franklin, Louis Allen, JoAnna Kay, Francis Lee, and Marvel Lynn. In 1960 Anna, Joe and children moved to Orangevale California. In April of 1971 Anna was married to Lt. Col. Ret. Warren Greenwood and traveled all over the United States. While living in Tillamook Oregon, Anna married Floyd O. Smith in July 1990. Together they traveled the world going to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, and Nova Scotia and many of the states. Over her lifetime, Anna was privileged to visit all 50 states. In January 2006, Anna moved to Marion Iowa where she and her daughter, JoAnna, lived and shared a home until she passed. Anna was preceded in death by her daughter Emma (1948), her husband Joe (1965), her husband Warren (1989), and her husband Floyd (2001). Anna is survived by her children Dan (Barb), Louis

She will be laid to rest near her husband Joe and Warren in Burlingame Cemetery, Burlingame, Kansas. onny “Maxine” Richter (Trammel) was born in Newneta Arkansas on July 26, 1938 to Otis and Icelene Trammel and left this world for heaven on October 8 to join them and sister Ola Jean. After mom’s birth it was not long before she was joined by brother Richard, and sisters Marmie (Schock) and Ola Jean ( “Hunter” Panter deceased). By 1943 the Trammel family decided that they would move west where work was aplenty and start a new life, and they wound up in Tillamook. In 1956 she married Gary Rush and gave birth to Ron, Tammy (Nielsen), Laurie (Fernandes), and Richie. It was 1971 when things got downright
exciting. She married the love of her life Jerry Richter who brought 6 kids into the fold, and we were suddenly “The Brady Bunch”. The other “Brady’s” included Dory (Thompson), Dana (Aufdermauer), Doug, Denice Richter, David, and Dixie (McNeal). It’s hard to imagine raising a family with 10 kids, but mom and Jerry did it. And did it very well. Their kids (“yours, mine, and ours”) were the central focus of their lives. Mom was a loving person that was deeply connected to her church where family and faith meant everything to her. If you wanted to know what was going on “in the family” you would go to mom. If you had a problem you needed to talk about, you would go to mom. She was always there. She knew the number of hairs on each of her 10 kids heads and was very tuned in to their lives. She never gave up on her kids. Even during their biggest life challenges she had faith in
them. It was this faith and love that helped all of her kids land on their feet and succeed as they got older. Mom’s and Jerry’s “Brady Bunch” begat thirty grandkids. These grandkids in turn begat forty-four great grandkids, with a great grandkid and great-great grandkid on the way when she went to heaven. Mom was preceded in death by grandkids Tavia McNeal (Dixie) and JC Thompson (Dory). Mom started working at Children’s Services Division in 1971 and retired from there in 1999. “Max” as she was called by co-workers and friends had a deep passion for the welfare of kids which was not surprising given that she was our mom and was helping to raise 10 kids of her own. years. They loved to travel and go on vacations across country. Mom particularly loved winning money at Chinook Winds Casino, which she seemed to do regularly. She would keep her winnings in a secret place for emergencies and other things. She was an avid reader that could finish a book in one day. She also loved to keep in contact with her large extended family in Arkansas, who often came to visit. She and Jerry would also often babysit the grandkids and great grandkids. For many years she was involved with the Senior Citizens club as their bookkeeper. There is a quote from an unknown source about moms. It says, “Being a mama can be tough, but always remember in the eyes of your children, no one did it better than you”. That was our mom. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday November 6 at the Tillamook Christian Center at 1 PM.
