“Quality Merchandise And Great Service.” Axel Englund gave his community just that, and this was the belief that Englund Marine was founded with on July 22, 1944. His 50’ by 50’ store in Astoria, OR later expanded up and down the west coast, becoming a preferred and trusted name among commercial fishermen. The first expansion came with the addition of our store in Ilwaco, WA in 1966; followed by Westport in 1975. A few years later we opened a store in Charleston, OR and then bought Crescent Marine in Crescent City, CA. In 1983, Englund Marine purchased another branch of the marine business, U.S. Distributing. This distribution center supplies all of the retail stores. In 1988, Englund Marine added our store in Newport, OR, and one year later we purchased another distributor warehouse in Phoenix, AZ, Marine Wholesale. Our last store opened in Eureka, CA in 1995, serving the folks in Northern California better than ever. In 2001 we acquired Fisher Brothers, a 100 year old supply house and landmark in Astoria, OR, expanding our industrial product line and putting salesmen on the road. Faced with the need for an updated facility, we moved our Astoria store into our current 40,000 square foot building located at the Port of Astoria in February 2006. Finally, in 2007 U.S. Distributing opened a warehouse in Missoula, MT to meet the need for quality products with fast delivery in the Rocky Mountain West.

Englund Marine has grown its service over the last 76 years, and is still growing. We have a full service raft shop to keep crews safe, and two stores have full rigging shops. We continue to run our business on the same belief of, “Quality merchandise and great service.” This is all possible because of the dedication of our people. Our Story The Coos County Historical Society began its heritage work in 1891. The museum began operation in 1947. In 1999, residents John and Martha Butler gave the CCHS a generous gift of Tootsie Roll stock to launch the campaign to build the new museum. Donations from an additional 550 individuals, businesses and Foundations were received and combined with New Market Tax Credits. The Coos History Museum opened at its current location on the Coos Bay waterfront fall of 2015. Today the museum provides public programs and exhibits that preserve the stories and heritage of Oregon’s South Coast.
Inspiring Minds of All Ages Education Programs
From K to Gray, the Coos History Museum has education programs for people of all ages, Whether it be scheduled school field trips or site visits, adult education, evening First Tuesday Talks lecture series, Second Saturday Family Fun Day & Explorer’s Club, or special events we provide educational opportunities for adults and families.
Get Involved
The Coos History Museum receives no direct government support. We are a 501 ( C ) 3 organization whose operational revenue comes from memberships, donations, admissions, museum store sales, special events and rentals, and Legacy Planned Giving. We also welcome volunteers. Join us and get involved!
Exhibits Two floors of exhibits greet our visitors and explore the geography, history and economics of the South Coast to help museum patrons understand who we are and how we got here. Historic photographs, lively quotations, and artifacts illuminate our encounters with the land and sea and the interaction of the many people who contributed to our South Coast heritage.

Keep It Going! Les Schwab was raised in the Central Oregon area. In his younger days he did newspaper circulation work, and was circulation manager of The Bulletin in Bend, Oregon, when he entered the tire business. The beginning of the Les Schwab Tire Centers was January 1, 1952, when Les purchased the O.K. Rubber Welders in Prineville, Oregon. The original store was little more than a shed with a two-holer out back, an outdoor pump for water. It was a very small retreading shop with just one employee. With a $3,500 investment, and a very humble beginning, Les has built the business into the largest independent tire business in the United States, including areas as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago...anywhere. People often ask, “Why Prineville?” The answer is that Les started in Prineville, a city of only 5,000 and just kept growing; and is now in the Seattle area with 35 locations, in Spokane, in Portland, and in nearly every city in the three Northwest states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Also in two locations in Montana. He lost his only son in an auto accident in 1971, but he looks upon his over 2,000 employees as part of a large family. He asks the question, “What better thing can a man do with his life than to create opportunity for young people and watch them grow into successful people; not just for money, but in all ways, especially into good family people.” His profit sharing plans, which are like partnerships, are probably the most unique sharing plans ever created for employees. He believes in sharing with those who have helped him be successful, and he is not strong on large donations to colleges, hospitals, and such causes. There has been much prestige built into the Les Schwab sign with good employees, sudden service, warranties in writing and complete honesty. Sales in 1986 with exceed $180,000,000. It is his wish that his company with continue with the same policies and programs long after he is gone. Published in 1990

Our History
Reese Electric was started on February 10th, 1946 by Ben and viola Reese! Ben was born, and attended school, in Bandon. He began his electrical career in 1936, in Bandon. One of his earliest jobs was wiring the temporary “Tent City” for the homeless after the fire of 1936 that nearly destroyed all of Bandon. The first office was located at 1200 South Broadway, in Coos Bay, in a small house that is present day Hansen’s Animal Hospital. In 1947, the business moved to 781 Virginia Avenue, North Bend, renting space in the old dairy building. In 1948 the business moved again, this time to a place they would call home for the next 62 years, to 2011 Union.
