Winter Injury on Conifers by Joe Zeleznik, NDSU
Discolored needles on evergreens, noticed in late winter or early spring. Causes are many, true cures are hard to come by. Every year, starting in late February or early March, I begin to get calls and emails about evergreen trees that aren’t very green. Some of the needles may be turning brown, red or even a shade of purple. Generally, we categorize the problem as “winter injury”. That’s somewhat vague, as the potential causes are many. The classic example of winter injury is seen in this picture. All of the needles that are located above the snow are exposed to harsh winter conditions such as fierce winds and brutal cold. Additionally, bright sunlight can reflect off the snow and create more problems. The symptoms of winter injury in spruce trees are often somewhat different. Needles turn different shades of purple or red or brown. Usually, there is no specific pattern to the damage – the discoloration isn’t above the snowpack, or just on one side of the tree or even worse on one side. It isn’t necessarily newer needles, or older needles, or needles on the tops of the twigs that are affected. That makes diagnosis a little difficult – environmental problems usually show some type of pattern. Nevertheless, if symptoms like these develop over the course of the winter, after January, then it’s almost certain that the problem can be categorized as winter injury. While rough winter conditions can kill needles, the buds that contain next year’s growth often survive. The trees in the first picture above were damaged in the 2009-2010 winter. The shoots had new growth in 2010 and the trees recovered well. Winter injury stresses trees and minimizing stress over the following growing season is important in helping trees recover. Watch out for pests and treat them as needed. Spruce trees that have been damaged by spider mites are more susceptible to winter injury than those that haven’t been attacked. Minimizing drought stress is also important. Make sure the tree has enough water to meet its needs, but don’t overwater. A rule-of-thumb for watering is once every 10 days, if there has been no rain. In the fall, watering up until the ground freezes will help keep the tree hydrated going into winter. This will help to minimize winter injury, though it won’t completely prevent it. Helping the tree to build new leaf tissue can also support its recovery. Adding a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer in the spring – 1 to 3 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of soil surface – can help the tree to recover. Winter injury is common and reveals itself as dead needles during the spring. Minimizing stress during the growing season can help trees recover from winter injury, and in some cases, can even lower the probability of winter injury from happening in the first place.

In the United States there is a shortage of honey bee and pollinator habitat in general. This is due to a variety of reasons; disease in the bees, loss of native habitat, insecticide use, to name a few. Why do we care about Pollinators? Because Honeybees, specifically, pollinate nearly one out of every three bites we eat. The good news is we can All do our part to help improve and create pollinator habitat. It doesn’t have to be a large area of land to plant pollinating plants on, it can be a corner of your yard or an “odd” acreage not being farmed. Tips of creating and promoting Pollinator Habitat: Diverse Bloom: Grow a variety of plants that bloom through the growing season with differ color, shape, size, & during the 3 different bloom periods Create Nest Sites: with bunch grasses, Bamboo Bundle, bare ground, shallow water or a nest box Carefully use Pesticide & Insecticides: read & follow labels carefully! Out to Pasture
Here are a few grazing system tips & considerations for this grazing season. Have Plan: all good plans are flexible, as a grazing system will need to be. There are many variables weather, work load, water, breeding, neighbors, crops, a lot of things. But having a plan to start with and to adjust throughout the season will lead to a successful grazing rotation. A plan is good reminder & goal for a manager of when it is time rotate livestock. There are many different professional and producer opinions on what type of “grazing system” is the best, but the “best plan” is the one that makes sense to you and works best for your operation……….the main point is………..just have some type of rotation & plan. Take a few minutes and draft out a plan, put it on a calendar or in your phone to remind you to look at your grass and decide if it is time to rotate. Or make an appointment with NRCS and they can assist you with maps and technical service to develop a grazing rotation that works for you. Grazing Readiness: a good indicator of when a grass plant is ready to be grazed is when it is in the third leaf stage. Also know if you are grazing cool or warm season plants, grazing plants when they are in their active growing season can promote better plant regrowth after grazing. Changing Season of Use: grazing grasses and plants at different times of the growing season, in different years develops strong root systems and healthy plants. If a plant is grazed at the same time every year it can stunt root growth & not allow plants to ever grow to maturity. Stocking Rates: you can request NRCS staff to assist you by establishing stocking rates considering your soil types, plant species composition and production goals. Or simply start with your past grazing experience as a baseline. Did the pasture and cattle look healthy at the end of the last grazing season? Was there adequate plant cover left on the ground? Is there a variety of healthy plants growing in your pastures? If yes then your stocking rates are probably about right, if no then adjust accordingly. Stocking rates is not only about number of head but as much about timing, how long the livestock are in one pasture. Rest: is one of the most important components in grazing, plants need time, growing time, to recover from grazing. Plants are made to be grazed and regrow, but they have to have both to be healthy. NRCS guidelines required days of rest: Tame grass: in May & June 25 days, July& August 35 days, on Native grass in May & June 45 days, July & August 65 days. Litter & Ground Cover: Soil health is just as important in our grazing lands as it is in our crop land. Leaving old grass as ground cover can cool ground temperature, cooler ground temperatures promote good soil biology leading to soil health. Water: good water quality is essential to your livestock’s health; getting fresh water through wells and pipelines is a great improvement to most grazing systems. If you do rely on surface water, monitor it closely. The Soil Conservation District Office has a “quick test” in the office available free-of-charge to test water, and if the “quick test” is bad we encourage producers to send it to a lab for further analysis. Monitoring: can be done at many levels. By photo points, taking pictures of your pastures in the same spot every year to monitor changes in number & size of plants. By a formal inventory or just by taking the time to stop and look if your grass and cattle are healthy and growing well

Some practices have restrictions on what time of year they can be installed. This mainly applies to contracts in the western 1/3 of Bowman and Slope County. Please check with our office to make sure what type of contract you have and when your start date is. 2. One month before you install your project, let our office know that you will be working on your project. We need to make sure that we have all the paper work done, including Cultures Resources and design of your project. 3. One week before installation, make sure your contractor or you call 811 and get a ONE CALL buried utility ticket number. We must have this number to make any kind of payment. This is for YOUR PROTECTION if any utilities happen to be disturbed. 4. Once you know when the contractor will begin work on your project, please let our office know. We would like to make a field visit to certify what material is being used and other design information.
