A Note of Thanks

Wow, what a whirlwind we have had in the last six months!! This is a long overdue thank-you for everything we have gone through while Rene’ Burk has been sick. Mom got sick for the first time November 26th and was in the St. Alexius Hospital for a month. They diagnosed her with Viral Meningitis Encephalitis. This was caused from a cold sore that had laid dormant in mom’s body and traveled right to her brain. It is considered a non-traumatic brain injury, but affects the brain in the same way. Mom was home for three weeks and as unheard of as it is, she got it again!! She spent another month in St. Alexius, with an e-consult with the Mayo Clinic, but the disease was treated a little bit differently this time. It is very rare to get this twice so now mom is a statistic in the medical books!! At mom’s follow-up appointment with her neurologist in Bismarck we were almost positive this was back again for the third time. We were correct and were sent on to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Her brain was all swollen again and was centered behind mom’s eyes this time. Her brain has had a lot of swelling with no time to heal itself so has really affected her memory and such. Her team of doctors found her meningitis had caused an autoimmune reaction in her body. After three weeks in the Mayo Hospital mom is home, finally!! We want to thank everyone for all of the prayers, cards, letters, phone calls, meals brought to the house, and all of the baked goods. Thank you also to the amazing people that shoveled their driveway through the winter; it did not go unnoticed!! A huge thank-you to Justin Coyle, Mike & Mark Ballard and Benefits Hospital for a following all the time off that Michelle, Rocky, and Debbie were able to take; it means a lot to us so Thank You!! There are not words to express the God-Send that Jody Rajewsky has been for our family; Thank YOU!! Thank-you to the awesome doctors, nurses, and staff at Southwest Healthcare; you people are amazing. Thanks also to the Bowman Ambulance crew for getting mom to Bismarck safely; twice. Although she said the second ride was awfully rough!! Mom is getting better every day and we are hoping one day to have the “Gramma” back we remember.
