Spring Unveiling Featured Artists 2026

Two Person Show

Christopher Mathie | Stirling Gorsuch

May 1 – June 15

Christopher Mathie

Christopher Mathie is well known in the gallery for energetic abstractions that reference coastal landscapes. The Washington artist has gained a reputation for impressionistic seascape paintings that harness raw emotions, immediacy and intentional mark making into large scale canvases. In his dynamic painting process, Mathie builds up layer upon layer of textural paint, giving his finished pieces lively and inviting surfaces with a complicated sense of color. His new collection for Spring Unveiling draws from recent travels to Thailand where Mathie experienced a different approach to seeing and art making. Using sea-life forms and bold vibrant compositions, Mathie’s new paintings celebrate the interconnectedness of living creatures.

Stirling Gorsuch

Stirling Gorsuch creates intricate linocuts and expressive monotypes that pay reverence to the forests, ocean and mountains in the region. As an avid explorer, memories and experience shape the way Gorsuch renders the natural world in his printmaking process. His painterly monotypes are full of movement and energy recalling the windy coastal environment, while his detailed linocuts capture the stillness of fleeting moments in time, often combining several vantage points into poetic compositions. The artist grew up in Cannon Beach in an artistic household, surrounded by our local coastal scenery and landscapes from throughout Oregon. This new body of work reflects his deep connection to the Pacific Northwest.

Jeff has been painting in watercolor for over 50 years and in oil for 20 years, and is excited to share his latest creations with visitors over the festival weekend. For 39 years, Jeff and his wife Carol have been offering his paintings and prints in their spacious second-floor gallery at Sandpiper Square in the heart of downtown Cannon Beach. And while Jeff is the visual artist of the family, he’ll be the first to say that one of Carol’s many creative gifts is her ability to put together a wonderful gathering. Shearwater Studio & Gallery, Shaped by Nature

Shaped by Nature is an exhibit highlighting the beauty and character of natural materials. Through wood, texture, and organic form, the exhibition explores the dialogue between the natural world and the artist’s hand. Josh Blewett transforms weathered driftwood into organic sculptural forms that are inspired by nature and the human figure. Working with wood collected along the coast, he preserves the natural textures, curves, and imperfections of each piece while carefully refining the form. His sculptures highlight the quiet beauty of the material, balancing raw natural elements with thoughtful craftsmanship.

Gavin Tougher creates functional work that balances thoughtful craftsmanship with the organic beauty of wood. Sometimes incorporating handmade glass elements, his pieces are designed to hold small collected treasures and meaningful objects.

House of Orange opens its newest collective show, “Spring a Shore Thing!” a vibrant celebration of the Oregon coast, where imagination creates a playful, modern expression of coastal life. This eclectic collection brings together a diverse range of mediums each piece capturing the hopeful spirit of spring emerging along the coast.

Soft, sculptural forms emerge in a series of modern felted sea creations—organic shapes inspired by ocean life. Gregg Goolsby’s soft encaustic seascapes create rich, layered,& meditative—capturing the essence of the ocean.

Carol Ross’s expressive tide pool paintings explore hidden worlds beneath, rich with color, texture, & life. Alongside them, drawing from unique perspectives & fresh palettes, Susan Walker paints iconic coastal vistas with a contemporary twist.

Greg Scott’s whimsical depictions of Cannon Beach through the life of local creatures bring a sense of play, personality, & storytelling to the collection. Kristie Mooney’s watercolor batik seascapes blend fluid color with intricate illustrations, layering shorelines into dreamlike compositions.

The collection expands into three dimensions with ceramic sea swirls by Annabelle Stien. The latest in the series of Sara Fine’s Cannon Beach Bunny sculptures. New glass flowers and mosaics by Beth Anderson. Fused glass & pen & ink collage by Eileen Downes. As well as Phil Seder’s newest wood and metal shorescape series featuring an octopus.

Guest artist Ben Butcher’s mermaid figures, rendered in expressive pen and ink, weave a thread of myth & mystery, culminating in an immersive live mermaid figure drawing experience led by Ben Butcher on Sat. at Steidel Hall. Enjoy live ambient music by Travis Harnett, live mermaids who promise a dance at the close of the experience, and drinks from the Wine Shack.

Helvi Smith’s newest vibrant, abstract-to-whimsical paintings hint at recognizable forms—birds, fish, or imaginative creatures. A new Miska Mermaid will be sure to make a splash. Rounding out the collection is a Sunday trunk show of handmade ukuleles, blending visual artistry with musical craftsmanship.
