COVID-19 impact: Didn’t get to say goodbye
didn’t get to say goodbye. To walk down the halls of Gold Beach High School one last time savoring every stain on the walls and mismatched tile on the floor. I didn’t get to have one last breakfast and one last lunch from the masterful Mr. Kitchen. I didn’t get to tell my teachers, “thanks for the pain and suffering, but I’m going to miss you,” and hug them one last time. I didn’t get to go to prom and hear the drama regarding who got queen. I didn’t get to break the bank on this beautiful

dance until my legs were shaking with my amazing friends. I didn’t get my senior pictures or invitations to put them on. I didn’t get a senior prank and skip day; which were going to be at the same time. I didn’t get to have that one unforgettable day upriver with all my classmates celebrating our childhood memories. I might never see the people I grew up with again. I won’t get to wait in the girls' locker room in my cap and gown. The one that I spent hours decorating with the perfect phrase that was clever and funny. I won’t
get to take selfies with my fellow seniors with the hashtag, “#almostthere,” and inevitably crying together because we’re sad it’s almost over. We’ve worked so hard and waited so long for this one moment and feel sad and happy that it’s all coming to an end. Oh, but it already ended. I won’t get to walk and take my seat holding the flowers we chose to represent this day. I won’t get to read the names of all my friends and classmates as they walk across the stage. I won’t get to read my own. I won’t get to move my tassel or
throw it in the air. I won’t get to say a huzzah and then pack onto a bus for a long night ahead. I won’t get to stay up all night and do weird things that only happen with sleep deprivation and crackhead energy and I won’t get to hug everyone in the morning before we part ways. The last time we’ll all be together. I’m writing this letter because I didn’t get to say goodbye. I didn’t realize what I had lost until I saw those stadium lights and I couldn’t hold back the tears. There are so many people I wish I could say
goodbye to and give one last hug. People who are moving or going into the military or people who will stay in Gold Beach when I move away. I thought I had months but it was over a month ago. I didn’t realize that the day I walked out of Gold Beach High School it would be my last. So this is my letter to Gold Beach High School and to everyone I didn’t get to say goodbye to. Ethan Hooper: BHHS 2020 Valedictorian Randy Robbins

s with other class of 2020 graduates across the country, this year's crop of Brookings-Harbor seniors has endured what had to be unthinkable a scant few months ago-namely-a worldwide pandemic resulting in an all-encompassing quarantine that effectively shut down the country, and by extension, ending the 2019-2020 school year early. Ethan Hooper is this year's BHHS Associated Student Body President and the valedictorian. A well-rounded individual, Hooper in addition to maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, also earned varsity letters in four sports — football, basketball, golf and bowling. Not an easy task, but then again, Ethan isn't one to look for
Ethan Hooper easy offramps on his highway of life. Case in point, this top academic was accepted to prestigious Harvard University, not exactly the cushiest place to get into after high school. Hooper is focused. He knows precisely what he wants to do. "I am going to pursue a dual major of Government and
American Politics with a minor in Business and Economics," he said. He credits many of his teachers for helping him "to discover what I wanted to do in life" but singles out his Social Studies teacher, Kelly Garvin, as being key in the process. "She lit a fire in me and got me hooked on what I am passionate about," he said. What does he consider now to be the biggest hurdle to overcome on his straight-A destination that started way back in grade school? The thinker considers the question briefly and responds. "Oh, it had to be finding that perfect balance," he said. Balance? "Many times I found myself in the position of having several papers coming due at the same time," he said, laying out the challenge. "You simply can't
shirk one class over the needs of another... so I had to work extra hard to make sure they were all done right every time." But he points a finger at himself. "This year was especially tough because I also threw four sports into the mix," he said. Hooper's scholastic game meant balancing his 4.0 GPA with the added demands of time and energy to the sports and other extracurricular activities. Throw in seeking out scholarships and his life resembled a high stakes game of Jenga tower...one misstep and it could all come crashing down. For Hooper that entailed 12-hour days at school and giving it 100% to make sure it didn't crash. He made it. The tower is still standing. Was it hard? "Without a doubt." Worth it? "Uh-huh." But
he takes the honor in stride. "Look, the title of valedictorian is nice, but for me, it really just speaks to the hard work I've put in, that's all. It is the reward of having done that work," Hooper said. What does he regard as his greatest accomplishment during his tenure as Brookings-Harbor High School A.S.B. President? "I would have to say it was working with our new Principal, DeAnne Varitek, and providing her with my input on new elective classes ranging from entrepreneur classes to trade schools for next year's students...I've enjoyed that aspect of my time in office," Hooper said. How does Hooper see a COVID-19 BHHS graduation go down this year? "It's still being discussed but it looks like we might have a drive-thru diploma grab with
grads in cars getting out for pictures at the podium with photo ops for family," he said. "As for the addresses they might be on projection screens or in person, we are working through that now." What will the valedictorian miss when he tosses his tassel and leaves the home of the Bruins for good? "I would have to say it will be the fun, daily interactions with my classmates and faculty," Hooper said. "All the fun parts of every seniors' year typically come at the end of the year when the tests are done and burdens start to lift. That is when we (seniors) are supposed to kick back a little, enjoy ourselves and because of all of this(COVID) we were robbed of that." Then speaking for his classmates he waxes bittersweet, "It is unfortunate... sad really."

Destiny Roberts: BHHS 2020 Salutatorian Randy Robbins

rookings-Harbor High School senior Destiny Roberts is the Class of 2020 Salutatorian. The 17-year-old has earned an impressive 3.93 grade point average during her BHHS career and is attending Portland State University in the fall. Once there, her major will be in Psychology with a minor in Criminology. Why so? One could say, as Roberts herself readily admits, "That I want to know what makes the bad guys tick." Her desire to do so is because someone in her immediate family chose to break the law. It was an event that shaped her life saying matter-of-factly, "It

became personal for me." This fearless, soon-to-be high school graduate, sees
herself as a forensic psychologist one day in the nottoo-distant future sitting
across from incarcerated criminals with the goal of counseling to determine whether or not they can be rehabilitated. Her hard work while at BHHS earned Roberts what she describes as "a full-ride" scholarship to P.S.U. She credits two Bruins instructors, Mr. Scott and Miss Keady, for inspiring her to follow her dreams. Scott teaches Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, while Keady teaches Advanced Placement English. How exactly did she manage to achieve one of the best academic performances among her peers? "Well, it's not easy. There was always stress involved, commitment, and hard work," she said. Adding, "I would do the normal school
work, grab a quick bite of dinner, then would head off to my room sometimes until 1 a.m. to get my homework and other items that needed my attention done." Destiny admits her dedication meant often shortchanging some of her social life. "I didn't get to hang out with my friends as much as I would have liked," she said. What does the nearly graduated Bruin like to do in her precious few minutes of downtime? "I draw. I like art and journal," she said. She also mentions that she has a penchant for Mexican cuisine. What will she miss the most when she packs up the car for Portland with Brookings in her rearview mirror? "I will definitely miss the
support of family and friends here, but will not miss having to be super independent up there," she said with a smile. How has COVID impacted her senior year? "Our (seniors) normal workload classes were getting easier toward the end of the year," she said. "A lot less stressful, but that was replaced with worrying about school curriculum changes, sports cancellations, and the like. I guess COVID made things more stressful because of the uncertainty surrounding it." Roberts will be giving a commencement speech at graduation, along with Ethan Hooper's valedictorian address, but the details of exactly how that will transpire in the new age of social distancing remain to be seen.

Manny Zamora: BHHS Boy Athlete of the Year Randy Robbins

anny Zamora values family, hard work, and commitment. You can hear it in his voice while recalling all those special times he and his granddad had reliving every play. The elder was Manny's "biggest fan"
"I am very honored to receive it (award). I've always felt I had to work a little bit harder than my peers," Zamora said. "I was never recognized in the past, so it feels good to get that now." Zamora's gridiron career had him doing double duty as running back and linebacker for the Blue and Gold. On football he says, "I love the growth we (Brookings) had over the last two years.

watching and encouraging the youngster all through his life until he passed away the night before Zamora's senior baseball season was slated to open. As it turned out, grandpa didn't miss a thing. The COVID-19 shutdown made sure of that. Manny was a powerful force not only in Bruins baseball, but football, basketball, and wrestling and earned him the distinction of being named Brookings-Harbor High School's Boy Athlete of the Year.
We came together and brought back our football to a winning program." The Bruins, after suffering several years of head coaching switches and subpar seasons, made the state playoffs the past two years. BHHS head football coach Shaun Bavaro had high praise for Zamora's performance on the team making these three observations: "Multi-sport athlete all four years, captain, high GPA and has the right

He is just made of the right stuff, positive leadership, passion, dynamic on/off the field, hard worker, grit and of all relentless approach to any goal he has ever had. "He was captain for two years, playing multiple positions for us both on offense and defense and was our vocal leader. We won't be able to replace Manny in our program, however, he has helped tremendously by moving our program forward and building a solid foundation for our future success. "He has special talent that isn't acquired, he is born with it, he makes whatever he is around better, people, sports teams, leadership class, classroom and will be a very successful member of society. He gets what community is and that he wants to make our football program better for the future Bruins football players. The way he interacts with our youth on and off the field is priceless. Examples: working with youth baseball all-stars in the batting cage during the summer, to running our Bruins Brother Football camp, or writing 'Future Bruin' on a Dutch Bros. cup. Our youth has looked up to him. Manny really gets that he is positive for our young kids." Of basketball, Zamora points to his favorite memory as "playing with my buddies from the time were all in fourth grade," but comes back to baseball as his favorite sport. "There is the mental side I really enjoy, lots of preparation between every pitch along with just the game itself," Zamora said. Best baseball memory? "Yeah, in my junior year we were tied in the fifth in a game with Reedsport and

there was a man on third. I turned and gunned the man out from 250 feet away," he recalled. After graduation, Zamora is joining the United States Navy. His ship date is Sept. 10. He feels it is his duty to serve his country. "I'm second generation to America and first generation born here. I want to give back and to do something with a challenge," Zamora said. Adding, "I want to leave Brookings and experience life out t h e r e through my own lens." Z a m o r a praised all of his coaches but singled out his baseball coach, Keith Wallin. "He (Wallin) held me to a higher standard, pushing me to be better without wavering," Zamora said. Zamora said his work ethic comes from his father. "I've been through a bunch in my life. My dad was always there supporting me and challenging me," Zamora said. "My dad is the reason, along with my grandfather, for my working harder and ultimately becoming the athlete that I am." Final words of advice to the Bruins athletes coming up through the ranks? "Work hard, take pride in being a Bruin and love every minute of every game," Zamora said. "High school athletics will go by in the blink of an eye. Enjoy it all and appreciate every moment."

n the next week or so, Alonna Nalls will leave Brooking-Harbor High School along with the rest of her graduating class of 2020 for the next chapter in their lives. That much we know. What remains to be seen is what the vacuum her departure will mean for Bruins athletics next year. Some sneakers are harder to fill than others. Nalls was named the BHHS Girls Athlete of the Year by the school's coaching staff and Athletic Director Jean Shearers. "It is an honor," Nalls said. "I feel good about it (the award). It has been important for me to get good grades and to work hard at my sports." The talented senior competed in three different sports — volleyball, basketball and track. While she enjoyed aspects of all three, she said her favorite had to be track and field, where she rattled the competition by running a leg on the 4x100 meter relay, competed in the long jump, and finished off by turning on the turbo thrusters in the 200- and 400-meter sprints. In the last event, she navigated the track in 52 seconds. "I like track because I had to rely on myself and make myself accountable," Nalls said. Next year, Nalls plans to attend Lane Community College in Eugene where she shares that she will, once again "lace her shoes up to run track" but while there, she will be majoring in Nursing. her while there and I was intrigued by that...I like being able to help people," she said. How did COVID-19 impact her sports? There is a certain sadness in her answer. At what could have been. "I missed my entire senior year of track," she said. "This year was my last. I had high hopes of competing at state and when that fell through I was not very happy." Ever the competitor, when most everyone else was resigned to their fate, Nalls held fast to practicing, hoping for a chance to put on the Blue and Gold one last time. "Yeah, I kept practicing. Maybe it would open back up," she said. "But it didn't." It was that kind of can-do attitude that impressed BHHS varsity girls basketball coach Chris Schofield. The Lady Bruins advanced to the semifinals of the state girls basketball tournament. "I could probably go on for days about what Alonna has contributed to our program," Schofield said. "But the number one thing she brought to our program was toughness. Her fierce competitiveness definitely set her apart. She competed hard every day in practice and raised our intensity level in everything we did. She took pride in her role as a defensive stopper and rebounder. I never heard a complaint out of her about needing to play more or wanting to shoot more. She just went about being the best basketball player she could be for our program." How was it that Nalls become so determined as an athlete? Did her father, Lonnie Nalls, who coaches Bruins wrestling serve to inspire her? "He did," she said. "He reminded me that whatever I put into something in life is exactly what I will get out."

Students receive $176K from Brookings-Harbor Scholarship Foundation STAFF REPORT
Scholarships totaling $176,000 were announced for 2020 by the Brookings-Harbor Scholarship Foundation, ranging in individual awards from $1,000 to $7,500. The non-profit fund designated $72,000 in awards for 24 seniors graduating in 2020 from Brookings-Harbor High School and $102,000 for 36 past graduates of BHHS. “We’re pleased that the foundation can continue to support the dreams of BHHS graduates,” said BHSF President Scott Darger. “In addition, many of our awards honor the memories of donors who wanted to leave a legacy in the BrookingsHarbor community.” The competitive scholarships are in addition to the ongoing automatic grants from GEARUP, a federal grant administered by the foundation for past
BHHS graduates. Leading the awards for graduating seniors was class valedictorian Ethan Hooper, designated to receive $7,500 in a John Atkins Scholarship. He was followed by salutatorian Destiny Roberts, Jesse Contreras and Cecilia Hilton, all given $5,000 in total scholarships from both Atikins funds and Brookings-Harbor High Student Body scholarships. For past graduates, the awards start at $5,000 from Doug Peterson Scholarships, going to Kaylee Strain, Jenni Portwood, and Nathaniel Barnard. Established in 1992, the Brookings-Harbor Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit independent organization, operated by an all-volunteer board. The foundation’s endowments total more than $2 million. BHHS Principal DeAnne Varitek’s Message
W
e know this has been a challenging time and our hearts go out to you and your families for the special experiences that you have lost. We have done our best to plan some memorable events that will demonstrate how important you are to us and to invite the community to join with us in honoring the Class of 2020. On May 29, we will hold a Cap and Gown Drive-Thru Pick Up Party From 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. On that day, students or parents can drive by the front of the school and a BHHS staffer will deliver caps and gowns,
graduation cords, yearbooks, and senior announcements to your car. We also have a special gift for our seniors! On June 13, at 2 p.m., in alignment with current guidance from the state, we plan to hold a formal graduation ceremony on school grounds. The ceremony will be broadcasted while students and families watch in a designated lineup from the comfort of their cars. When we reach the portion of the ceremony where students receive their diplomas, each family will drive up to the stage, exit their vehicles, and seniors will march across the stage.
Seniors will receive their diploma shields as they normally would and we will provide a photographer who will post digital photos free of charge. We hope this will be a positive experience for students, families, and the community. Please know that we will always do our best to provide the experience that most closely aligns to your expectations while taking every measure to ensure the safety of you and your families. We are so proud of your accomplishments and look forward to seeing you soon!

E
very school year is marked by change. New students join us, others leave. Teachers retire and new teachers begin their careers. Schedules change, new books, new expectations. Only one thing remains a constant in education, that it will change, evolve and continue. The 2019-2020 school year began like any other, but will be marked by historic change. In a short time the world went from discussing events in a rural part of our world to seeing how we live here and abroad fundamentally changed. Students were sent home to learn, teachers were asked to rethink how they support students, and it seemed like the entire world sheltered in place. And yet now we see a
new constant in education. That when people work together they can overcome. The class of 2020 saw their long-anticipated rituals such as graduation taken from them, but instead of wailing and gnashing teeth, they set about finding ways to make them happen still that would be creative and meaningful in this new world. The rest of you struggled to find a new “normal” but met the challenge of changing educational expectations with flexibility and grace that shows the world that you will succeed in life. Thinking about the end of this year it would be easy to lament what didn’t happen, but many of those things still happened, despite world events, not because of them. You finished school at home,
we saw you graduate from the back of a car that triumphantly paraded you through town, and we saw you build common bonds that helped you navigate what could feel like an isolated world. In short, what I get to write about instead is that you have shown this community and this world hope. You have rallied together with your teachers and with your friends, and you have worked together to prove that you can be successful no matter what the world throws your way. You have proven that together we can face this change and those that are yet to come. While the world may have changed, we remain a community. We are Gold Beach.
