Neah-Kah-Nie girls basketball team sits third in league Sitting well in the 2A Northwest League, the Neah-Kah-Nie girls are now learning to battle the tough mentality of basketball. “[We’re] still trying to get kids to move on from their mistakes and play,” Head Coach Corey Douma said. “Mistakes bother them too much, trying to clear the mind and just play.” Despite the mentality hurdle, the girls continue to make improvements and secure more wins. “We’re playing better, getting stron-
ger,” Douma said. Sitting third in the league, Douma is pleased with the team’s position, but hopes they can work on being reliable. “We just need consistency, that’s what I’m searching for and I think we’re close,” Douma said. The team has already faced Vernonia and Portland Christian, the top two teams in the league, but will have a chance to face them again and improve their position in the standings.

Neah-Kah-Nie boys’ basketball team ready to shine All the teams in this year’s 2A Northwest boys’ basketball league have proved they can compete against on another. “Our league is crazy,” Neah-Kah-Nie Head Coach Steve Sherren said, noting that local competitor Nestucca has held the top two teams in the league within reach while being at the bottom of the rankings. The Pirate boys defeated the Bobcats 56-46 at their Dec. 20 matchup, which Sherren hopes is a good indicator that they too will be able to compete with the best in the league.
“You just have to play hard and come ready to play,” Sherren said of where he sees the team going in the future. A definite highlight of the season so far came recently, when the Pirates forced Delphian into overtime during their Jan. 15 game. Freshman Max Halverson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 37-37. The Pirates pulled off the win 41-38. The Pirates are currently sixth of nine in the league. “We’re sitting at 2-4, you don’t want to be at the bottom,” Sherren said.

Nestucca wrestling demonstrates potential
With a group of young wrestlers, the Nestucca Bobcats are learning how to put it all together. “Overall I am happy with the improvements the group has made up to this point in the season,” Nestucca Head Coach Cameron Mitchem said. “We [just] need to get more consistent.” Several members of the team have started to demonstrate the type of wrestler they can potential be. “Now they need to start putting those performances together for entire matches or tournaments,” Mitchem said. “Ryan Leslie has been showing some big improvements the past couple of weeks. Jordan Whittles is another wrestler that has had a solid season to this point.” Jordan Whittles has collected the most podium finishes for the Bobcats this season, competing at 106-pounds. His accomplishments include: placing third at the Culver Invite Dec. 13-14, second at the
Hagerty Invite Dec. 21, fourth at the Willamette Invite Dec. 28, fourth at the Bob Bishop Invite Jan. 4, and fifth at the PAC-RIM Jan. 10-11. Leslie has also claimed several top finishes at 160-pounds so far this season including: placing third at the Hagerty Invite and sixth at the PACRIM Tournament. Without a returning state placer this year, the team is learning step by step what it takes to compete at the highest level. “This is a very young group that is learning things together,” Mitchem said. “They are figuring it out on their own and it is maybe taking them a little long then it has in the past.” “They all work hard every day and want to get better. We still have a lot of time to improve and fix some of our mistakes...they will be ready to compete at districts.”

Neah-Kah-Nie Nestucca Valley speech and debate team teaches confidence speech and debate: an intellectual pursuit high school for four years, you should make the most of it.” What he really enjoys about the speech team is that those who participate tend to do better in school. “They’re not afraid to raise their hand in class,” he said. “Basically all I’m doing is putting into practice what the English department has been teaching them all along: reading, writing, research, oral presentations. It’s a practical application of what 8-10 years of school has taught them.” One thing, Schaefer said he’s not much of a debate coach. “We’re not really a debate team and I have very few kids who are interested in doing that,” he said. The best part? “There’s no downside to what we do here,” he said. “No possibility of getting hurt, no physical contact, no concussing from it, it’s all an upside.” This year, it’s Nestucca’s turn to host the district tournament on April 5. Like most speech tournaments, it’s expected to be an all day event, beginning at 7 a.m. for registration.

And since Neah-Kah-Nie doesn’t have a drama club, it’s a good creative outlet for some students. “I really push speech as being an outlet for that kind of artistic expression,” she said. Students can perform monologues of plays, poetry readings or even perform duos together. “My focus in college was poetry,” said Strecker. “I took theater as well so it really speaks to a lot of my different interests. Strecker’s team travels to McMinnville on Jan. 25 for a tournament and then they have an overnight tournament at Lewis and Clark College. “This is the first time in a long time that Lewis and Clark has put on a tournament for high school students,” she said. Strecker is also excited to show her students where she attended college.

Carrie Strecker was drawn to teaching the speech and debate team at Neah-Kah-Nie High School because of the students, she said. “They’re the best kids at the school,” she said. “They’re smart and want to learn more and the intellectual pursuit is interesting to them.” Even though it’s a smaller team, with only 10 members, Strecker said considering the size of the school it’s about equivalent to some of the larger schools. This season, her team will participate in six different tournaments. While debate is a big part of the team, focusing on traditional argumentation within a debate structure, learning how to make claims and supporting those claims, Strecker said it’s the individual events she really enjoys. “It’s more interpretation of other people’s work like poetry and prose, so more really acting as

“The beauy of speech is just the confidence it breeds, in all levels.” So said Nestucca Valley Jr/Sr High School’s speech coach David Schaefer. Schaefer has been the head coach for the last three years and was a team volunteer for four years before that. Currently, Schaefer has 27 students in his class. “I’m constantly recruiting,” he said. “I’m always asking students if they want to join the team – I never give them a moments peace.” His favorite students are those that say they can’t talk in front of people. “’You’re the perfect one’ I tell them. Because give me a month or two and they’ll be able to talk in front of the UN.” Schaefer’s team competes in seven tournaments during the season – although not every student on the team can make it to the tournaments. “All my kids are doing so many different activities,” he explained, “I have to share.” And he encourages his students to try as many different activities as they can. “You’re only in

Nestucca boys basketball keep opponants within reach The Nestucca Bobcats started the season off with three straight wins, but since then have hit a drought. “We’ve had a couple kids decide not to continue playing and have had to rely on some younger kids to come in and provide quality minutes for us,” Head Coach Jim Kiser said. A lack of depth on the team could possibly be a reason for Nestucca’s struggle. But, the Bobcats are still led by some key players who have seen extensive playing time this season. Sophomore Brett Elder consistently scores over 20 points for the Bobcats in each game, Max Kirkendall follows in leading points and rebounds, Keenan Wenrick sets the Bobcats’ tempo, and “Raymond JacksonCruz is a sophomore who keeps getting better every day,” Kiser said.
Despite struggles for wins, a few noteworthy performances have come to the Bobcats so far this season. An exciting and unexpected win for Bobcats came when the boys beat Santiam on Dec. 11, 51-48 with a few last minute baskets. The Nestucca boys followed that win with their first and only league win of the season on Dec. 17 against Vernonia, 61-50. Most recently, the Bobcats competed against Gaston and Portland Christian, some of the best teams in the league, and have kept them both within reach. In each of their matchups, the games went into overtime and ended in small margin losses for the Bobcats. “The games…proved that we can play with the best teams in league, now we just need to make the jump over them,” Kiser said.

Neah-Kah-Nie wrestling sees success once again In his first year as Head Coach at Neah-Kah-Nie High School, Greg Kelley hoped to bring success once again to the Pirate wrestling program. “I am excited with the opportunity to lead a program with a rich wrestling tradition as NeahKah-Nie and to hopefully be a part of the positive change to get the program back to its previous heights,” Kelley said at the beginning of the season. A few months into the season, several accomplishments have been added to the books. “I feel like the team is progressing at a nice rate, I believe our seniors are having great seasons and really stepping into a leadership roles and thriving,” Kelley said. “Individually Alejandro Quintana and Logan Romig are having outstanding seasons, each already winning three tournaments.”
Yet, the team’s success this season is only a small portion of what they hope to achieve at championship time. “All in all I’m very proud of the effort that the entire team has put forward this season,” Kelley said. “Wrestling is not an easy sport, frankly in my opinion it is the toughest sport a high school athlete can take part in. Anyone that is willing to go through the workouts and time commitment of the sport has earned a lot of respect in my book.” With a month till the state championship, Kelley looks forward to his team’s performance in January and beyond. “I like to think of January as the decision month. This is where you decide what kind of wrestler you will be this year, either one that works hard and forges their own destiny or one that simple lets things happen.”

Nestucca girls basketball team stays optimistic With only one win this season, many athletes (and coaches) would throw in the towel, but the Nestucca Bobcats continue to bravely face their opponents. “It can be difficult to keep playing hard and to stay optimistic when you do everything right but just can’t get the ball through the basket,” Nestucca Head Coach Tim Foster said. “But, the girls have shown a lot of courage in going out and being persistent every game regardless of the outcome.” The girls’ only win of the season was the rematch against Waldport on Dec. 10 when the Bobcats won 35-22. This win came after the Bobcats lost 15-25 to them the week before. “I am proud of the work the girls have been putting in and the progress they are making,” Foster said. “We are starting to take on the iden-
tity of a team that plays hard for a full 32 minutes and makes other teams work hard to beat us.” Foster believes that his team’s ability to stay positive and continue to face the season with optimist spirits is credited in part to the team’s captain. “Monica Chatelain has been our rock up to this point,” Foster said. “Through the ups and downs her attitude and resiliency never waivers; and as a captain that is exactly the kind of leadership we need from her.” With a month of league games to go, the Bobcats will continue to gain experience and hopefully clinch a win in the coming weeks. “If we continue to stay aggressive and trust each other we’ll break through soon and have some opportunities to win a few games,” Foster said.

Tillamook boys basketball: stepping up The Tillamook boys’ basketball team’s spotted record leaves fans wondering where this season is headed. “It’s been a productive season,” Head Coach Greg Werner said. But, “the issue we’ve been having is being consistently inconsistent,” he said, adding that having a different lineup for the first 10 games of the season doesn’t help toward that goal. Injuries, illness, and academics have sent several boys to and from the court. “It’s been a major challenge for the program, but the guys are stepping up and filling spots,” Werner said. “I’m proud of the coaching staff dealing with the challenges and ad-
versity.” The highlight of the season came when the Cheesemakers upset Gladstone (the then number two 4A team in the state) on Jan. 7, 5754. This will not be the only time Tillamook will face the state’s best; the Cheesemaker’s stacked league will match them up against most of the top 10 teams in the state by the end of the season. “We always try to be at the top of our league,” Werner said. “We don’t talk about winning a lot, more about the small things like fundamentals and all the values you learn through athletics.”

Tillamook chess club helps students reach their full potential There’s something about mastering a game that’s been in existence for more than 2,000 years that just gets kids excited. Which is why Jim Cox wanted to help bring a chess club to Tillamook High School, after successfully running one at Neah-Kah-Nie for several years. “There was some what of a loosely organized chess club in the past,” said Cox, “but not one that attended tournaments or anything. And that’s our intent is to get involved in tournaments.” Cox has about 14 students who play regularly at the high school level and he’s hoping to branch out to the younger students eventually. They participate in the Chess for Success program, which originated out of Portland. Next month they’ll be competing at regionals and after that it’s the state tournament in March. That’s a two-day event in Portland, Cox said, for the top 10 percent of players. “For most chess gives a sense of accomplishment, and progress” Cox explained. “It also creates a community. People love to find new opponents.” Chess for Success has two tournaments, regional and state, but Cox said he communicates with other schools to create tournaments for the students. “It’s more just for fun,” he said. “Instead of trophies we hand out chess sets. It’s primarily just to promote the game and get the
kids playing against other opponents.” Chess is a gentleman’s sport, Cox emphasized. “Mainly it’s self control and self worth,” he said. “You can be competitive but also be polite. I tell my students it’s ok to go in for the kill but be nice about it.” His students learn both the rules and manners of chess – such as how to sit quietly and not prompt their opponent. “We really promote good manners, good citizenship, they shake hands before and after the match, good winners and losers.” Chess can help with over developmental problems, too. “A lot of students come in with different issues like ADHD or hyper active and it teaches them they can sit still and be a good opponent.” “It really comes down to mind against mind,” he added. The district tournament is Feb. 2 at Tillamook High School and anyone in k-12 can participate, Cox said, whether you’re homeschooled, in public or private school. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the tournament goes until about 3:30 p.m. Each player will get to play five rounds of chess to score points. “That way, even if a person loses the first or second round, they can actually come out on the other end as a winner if they improve their score,” said Cox.

Tillamook wrestling working towards peak performace Dedication and a desire for excellence characterize what the Tillamook wrestling team is all about. Led by experienced Head Coach Lonnie Eggert, the team has seen relative success so far this season. “The team is starting to respond and have been doing what is asked of them and also doing extra on their own,” Eggert said. Eggert, a former Cheesemaker wrestler, finished fourth at the 1993 Oregon Wrestling State Championship in the 157-weight class, the same year his team brought home a state championship title. In their 2013-14 season debut, the Cheesemakers took second place at the Hank Schmidlin Invite on Dec. 6, beating teams from Newport and Banks High Schools. Tillamook saw their first team win of the season at the Bob Bishop Invitational on Jan. 4,
scoring 191.5 points and beating out 18 other teams. “As hard as the group has been working it doesn’t surprise us with our first place finish,” Eggert told the Headlight Herald after the win. This year’s success comes after the team just barely missed out on a trophy at last year’s 4A Oregon State Wrestling Championships where the Cheesemakers finished fifth. With a month till the state meet, the team is steadily working toward peak performances. “Our philosophy is: be ready by the end of the year,” Eggert said earlier this season. But, a team cannot easily achieve greatness without support and guidance. “The one thing that is unique about Tillamook wrestling is the passion and experience of the coaching staff,” Eggert said. “We have new members of our staff and some experienced volunteers that set aside a lot of time for these student athletes.”

Tillamook girls’ basketball: understanding the fundamentals of basketball With only a couple wins, it’s been a rough start to the season for the Cheesemakers, but that’s to be expected with only two seniors on the varsity team. “We are still a young squad and [we’re] asking some [girls] to step up into situations that they may just not be quite ready for,” Head Coach Danielle Weber said. “But with that being said, all of my girls come to practice everyday and are ready to work their tails off to do what it takes to make them better basketball players.” A highlight of the Cheesemaker’s season so far came when they won the Neah-KahNie Driftwood Classic Dec. 27-28. Tillamook defeated Nestucca 46-17 in the first round, and then beat Neah-Kah-Nie 28-25
in the winners bracket for the title. Weber believes her team understands the fundamentals of basketball better than any team they matchup against because they work on them everyday in practice. While the Cheesemakers have not seen immense success so far this season, the varsity playing time for the young team will only benefit them in the years to come. “I only graduate two girls this year, so with that I have a lot of girls returning,” Weber said. “And each year they can add experience on the varsity level, that will only make us tougher in years to come.” Catch the girls in their second league game this Friday at home against Seaside at 7 p.m.

Tillamook swim team swims towards success The Tillamook Swim team is on track for another successful season. The girls’ team has already won two meets and the boys have finished in the top five all season. “We have had a good season so far,” Head Coach Todd Bush said. “Both girls and boys are swimming well. We have had several individual best times already this season.” The girls’ first win of the season came at the Nygaard Invitational in Astoria on Dec. 14. The girls defeated Seaside by two points, a great accomplishment because the Seaside girls’ team outswam Tillamook at the district meet last season. The 200-yard medley relay (Reibach, Kunert, Putman, Polman) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Reibach, Polman, Bush, Putman) both won and added to the team’s first place finish. Both relays would also take first at the Cheese Relays in Tillamook on Jan. 10, 200-yard medley relay (Reibach, Putman, Polman, Bush), 400-yard freestyle relay (Bush, Kunert, McRae, Putman). “The girls 200 medley relay is just over a second off of the high school record,” Bush said. “I feel confident that they can break it.”
Freshman Emily Reibach has also had a great start to the season in her first year as a Cheesemakers. Reibach won the 50yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke at the Nygaard Invitational, and finished first in the 100-yard freestle at the Newport Invite on Dec. 20. The boys’ team has also kicked off their season well. The Cheesemakers finished third at the Nygaard Inviational with a win from the 400-yard freestyle relay (Roesener, Wener, Pampush, Tohl), fifth at the Newport Invite, and second at the Cheese Relays. Senior Dylan Tohl has consistently added to the team’s score with his individual wins. Tohl won the 100-yard backstroke at the Nygaard Inviational and the 50-yard freestyle at the Newport Invite. “Both the league and district meets titles will be real close for the girls, and league for the boys will also be close,” Bush said. “As far as qualifying for state, we have a good chance on sending both girls and boys individually and relays.”
