Witches, storm troopers and a headless horseman coming to St. Helens BY DON PATTERSON It could be both frightening and fantastic on October 1 when the first ever Spirit of Halloweentown parade takes place in St. Helens. The South Columbia County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event as a kickoff to a monthlong “Spirit of Halloweentown” celebration. Several extraordinary groups have signed up to participate, including Star Wars Oregon, the Unipiper, Niles Zombie Control and Bennie and his taxi from the Halloweentown movie. The headless horseman from Sleepy Hollow will make a frightening appearance as will the float Witches Ride.

Rocky Smith from NW Ghost Tours leads the parade as Grand Marshall. Smith began paranormal investigations in 1995 and has identified haunted places throughout Oregon. He heads the annual ghost conference each spring. Freshly back from ComiCon, Star Wars Oregon is a costuming group dedicated to re-enacting epic scenes from the famous Lucas films. They bring Wookies, rebels warriors and Imperial storm troopers. The parade follows Columbia Boulevard from the chamber office in the old train station to Courthouse Plaza in Old Town and begins at 4:30 p.m. Additional events are planned in at the plaza culminating with the community pumpkin light-

ing at 7:30 p.m. Participation is open to any group, float, horses, walkers, motorized and humanpowered vehicles. The only requirement is a costume or other Halloween-themed decor. Gretchen Williams, the chamber’s coordinator for the “Spirit of Halloweentown” parade said she hopes businesses display scarecrows along the entire parade route. Local artisans can build a scarecrow to be displayed in areas where busi-

nesses are not participating. “We’d like to have every hole filled,” she said. The chamber hopes scarecrows are in place by parade time. Local groups are encouraged to participate and a parade application can be picked up at the chamber office or downloaded from the website at www.sccchamber.org. You can signup anytime, “up to and including the day of the parade,” Williams said.

“Spirit of Halloweentown” - How it all started BY STEPHANIE PATTERSON

The year 1998 lives in our collective memory as the first time Hollywood came to St. Helens. During the heat of summer, Singer White Productions and director, Duwayne Duham, labored to create the perpetual autumn charm of a mystical place called, “Halloweentown.” Residents had the chance to watch filmmaking up close and in some cases, became personally involved by joining the ranks of costumed movie extras. Star, Debbie Reynolds, proved herself to be the consummate professional and gracious lady she is known to be by signing many autographs and taking countless pictures with local people. As the Disney Channel’s October premiere drew close, the St. Helens Merchant’s Association, in conjunction with our local Chamber of Commerce, as well as other civic organizations, organized the first Halloweentown-inspired festival. There were parades, contests and treasure hunts. Michael Curry, master puppe-

teer and genius behind “The Lion King on Broadway,” as well as the designer of many puppet figures used in both the Times Square and Disney World millennial celebrations, debuted his fantastic Father Time floating puppet during the local high school Home Coming game. In an unprecedented move, Disney Studios granted permission for the movie to be screened at the St. Helen’s Movie Theater which figures prominently in the film and on Halloween night student’s from the St. Helens High School Drama Department received a surprise when ‘Halloween Town’ producer, Ron Mitchell, unexpectedly stopped by their Haunted House to visit with the young actors. During the next couple of years economic constraints as well as the challenge of finding large numbers of volunteers to take on a fullscale, citywide celebration temporarily ended our festival. However, due to the hard work and persistence of a talented core group of business owners and community in-

novators, “The Spirit of Halloweentown” festival was reborn. Each year more events are added drawing larger numbers of visitors. Why the success of this festival? Probably if you were to ask us we’d say it’s because of the heart at the core of our community. Each year we invite the public to come home to us and remember what Halloween was like when we were all young. We provide a chance for adults to shed their woes and once again become child-like. We invite

families to experience what it’s like to parade in costume down a small town street where everybody is family, to say those magic words, ‘trick or treat’ and for the space of an afternoon, or evening, forget the cares and concerns of the outside world. Come one, come all. Bring a costume and carve a pumpkin. We’ll keep the giant jack-o’-lantern lit for you. Welcome home to “The Spirit of Halloweentown.”

Halloween fun at 24th annual Children’s Fair It’s once again time for the annual Kiwanis Children’s Fair being held at St. Helens High School on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. A free celebration for children of all ages in a safe environment, the fair will have prizes, activities, entertainment and special guests including Ronald McDonald and

Jose’ with his balloon creations. Booths sponsored by several community agencies and organizations will have activities for children and information for adults. There will be food available for a minimal cost. Everything else is free. Fish ponds, The Reptile Man, face-painting and a hay-ride are just a few of the ac-

tivities planned. Also this year, parents will have the opportunity to prepare and to take home child identification kits. Costumes are welcomed and there will be an opportunity to attach reflectors to kids’ costumes to make them more visible on Halloween night. Join in the fun at the St. Helens

High School Commons, across from Avamere on Gable Road. After the Children’s Fair, head for the Spirit of Halloweentown activities throughout town, including the Li’l Spooks Parade and other special gatherings in the plaza, where “Halloweentown” was filmed.

Haunted tours of St. Helens St. Helens has a rich history of paranormal events. This 45-minute tour takes those brave enough to local haunts and spooky places around the riverfront district of old St. Helens. Spooky and creepy legends from the community’s past are reenacted along the way in a script written by Debra Brimacombe and adapted by Keith Marks. Beware, it may be a little scary for young children, so parental discretion is advised. Producers urge participants to dress for Oregon weather and keep warm. High heels are not recommended. Tour dates are Oct. 21 and 22 at 7, 8, 9 and 10 p.m. and general admission is $25. Haunted Hot Windermere Masquerade Ball Rod Cruise-in & Hearse Rally A Haunted Hot Rod Cruise-in & Hearse Rally will be held at the Courthouse Plaza in St. Helens on Oct. 15 starting at noon. Bring out your most haunted hot rod, classic car or hearse and win a $250 first prize, $100 second prize, or $50 third prize. The event is free to the public and to those bringing cars (no entry fee). Cars should arrive by 11 a.m.

The gala event of the Halloween season is the Masquerade Ball sponsored by Windermere. It’s a fundraiser and a party rolled into one. There is good food, great costumes, silent and oral auctions and music provided by the band Nightfall. Local eateries each donate a dish to the buffet, so it’s a true sampling of community cuisine. The event raises money

for a number of Columbia County organizations serving the needy. Over the years they’ve contributed more than $100,000. Last year’s ball raised $17,000. Chief organizer for the event is long-time county resident, George Hafeman who insists the money go to truly needy families that live in Columbia County. “All our funds stay in the county because they are raised in the county,” he as-

serts. This year’s ball is October 22 at the Fairgrounds Pavilion. Doors open at 5 p.m. and music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for a single, $25 for a couple or $125 for a table of eight. Tables must be reserved by Oct. 14. Tickets are available from Windermere Real Estate in St. Helens and Scappoose.

The Chronicle’s 2016 Lil Spooks Parade This is one of the original Halloween events in St. Helens. Parents who dressed up in costume and marched through St. Helens as children now bring their own kids to the parade. It’s a family friendly and dog

friendly event. Wagons strollers and human-powered floats are welcome. Pets welcome on leash. Powered vehicles, ATVs scooters or skateboards are prohibited. The parade starts after the Children’s Fair on Oct. 29, and pro-

ceeds down First Street past shops and restaurants in the Riverfront District. Kids can trick or treat merchants afterward or gather in the courthouse plaza for more entertainment. The parade usually attracts
