Rods ‘N Rhodies roars into Florence

I spoke with two gentlemen who came to Florence from Eugene for the sole purpose of obtaining shirts and apparel and snagged an event poster as well. They were awed at the event design that was created by Ron Gorman Illustration and Design from Eugene Oregon, which featured the 1935 Hupmobile from Arbuckle California, who took the Best In Show honors in 2022.

Peace Harbor unveils remodel of Rehab, and Wellness Center

Saturday began early as volunteers from the community and the local car club Rhody Cruisers gathered on Bay Street to place barricades, cones and sandbags to keep traffic from flowing, and allow-

ing the awaiting show vehicles to be moved into position for the event, which is primarily invitational as the number of vehicles allowed for the venue in Old Town Florence is limited. The volunteers set up canopies, tables and chairs for apparel sales, raffle sales, 50/50 sales and award ballots for the 33 Merchant Awards and the Children’s Choice, the People’s Choice and the Best of Show Award.

Florence Festival of Florence Chamber announces 2024 Books bringing the joy Rhody Fest theme of reading to Florence ‘High Tides and good vibes’ coming to Florence next year

PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center leaders, caregivers, Foundation members and patients, alongside local city officials and representatives, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the project completion of the Peace Harbor Rehabilitation and Wellness Center expansion and remodel on Wednesday, Sept. 5. This $1.3 million dollar project - made possible with the help of a generous donation from the Peace Harbor Medical Center Foundation - began in the early part of 2023 and is the Center’s first upgrade since it first opened in 2007. The upgrades will provide improved and increased accommodation for specialized inpatient and outpatient services with the capacity to see and serve between 80-100

patients per day, five days a week, Monday through Friday. During the past seven months of construction, the center remained open to serving patients and the community, only having to close a total of one and a half days. Peace Harbor extended a tremendous thanks and appreciation to the patients and caregivers for their ongoing patience and support during the expansion and remodel and to everyone who helped make the project possible. A business after hours for the center will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, presented in partnership with Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce announced its selection of “High Tides and Good Vibes” submitted by Barb Danko as the theme for the 118th Rhododendron Festival May 16-19, 2024. Danko wins a $100 Flocal Gift Card redeemable at scores of participating local merchants, bragging rights, and a place in Rhododendron Festival history. “The festival, with its carnival, Rhododendron Court, parades, live music, classic car show and cruise, vendor fair, and flower show serves as the unofficial kickoff to the summer tourist season here in Oregon’s Coastal Playground,” said Bettina Hannigan, the Chamber’s president and CEO. “We can’t wait to experience all the fun that will come with ‘High Tides and Good Vibes’ in May. “Generations of families have enjoyed all the fun of the Florence Rhododendron Festival. The 12th annual Florence Festival of Books (FFOB) is opening another chapter of its celebration of the written word on Saturday, Sept. 23, with approximately 55 participants signed up, including authors, publishers, panelists, and workshop teachers. People in Oregon could start receiving the nation’s newest COVID-19 vaccines as soon as next week after a federal advisory body endorsed the updated shots for everyone 6 months or older. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices decision to recommend the updated mRNA vaccines comes a day after they were authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Studies show the vaccines, formulated to target currently circulating variants, induce antibodies against a wide variety of COVID-19 viral variants and are expected to improve protection against serious consequences of COVID-19 infection, including hospitalization and death. According to the CDC, the vaccines have been updated to include a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant XBB.1.5 and related subvariants. They are approved for individuals 12 and older and authorized under emergency use for individuals 6 months through 11 years old. Paul Cieslak, M.D., medical director for communicable diseases and immunizations at OHA’s Public Health Division, said arrival of the updated monovalent COVID-19 vaccines – made by ModernaTX Inc. and Pfizer Inc.– represents a pivotal moment in Oregon’s COVID-19 response. “They are the first updat-

ed vaccines approved after the federal public health emergency ended in May, and the first updated vaccines available on the commercial market,” Cieslak said. “This means we’ve taken a big step toward normalizing COVID-19 as something we live with and manage much as we do for influenza.” The new vaccines’ availability on the commercial market means health care and vaccine providers must order and receive them directly from the manufacturers. During the pandemic, the federal government arranged for manufacturers to ship vaccines to state health agencies, which then managed orders and shipments for providers. The new COVID-19 vaccines also are being made available at the start of the 2023–2024 respiratory season, when federal and state health agencies begin promoting influenza vaccinations as people send children back to school, head indoors to escape colder weather and gather for holiday celebrations. OHA tracks influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity each year between October and April when infection and hospitalization rates are highest. “While we don’t yet know the seasonality of COVID-19, the fall months are when we start seeing flu and RSV cases go up, and COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising even now,” Cieslak said. “That’s why it’s important to have the new monovalent vaccines now so people can get

them along with their shots for influenza and, soon, for RSV.” A new RSV monoclonal antibody immunization for babies and toddlers is expected to be available commercially and to health care providers enrolled in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program later this fall. A new RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older has been available on the commercial market for several weeks, and people should check with their insurance plan to make sure RSV vaccination is covered. The CDC has not announced a timeline for when the new vaccines will arrive in state-sponsored vaccine programs, such as Oregon’s Vaccine Access Program (VAP) which provides free vaccines for eligible children and adults. In the meantime, OHA has directed vaccine providers to dispose of any leftover bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in their storage inventory according to their organizations’ policy for medical waste disposal, and to record wasted doses in Oregon’s ALERT Immunization Information System. Insurance plans will cover the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine when they become available. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires insurers to cover most ACIP-recommended vaccines without cost sharing (such as copays or deductibles). People can get the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines by contacting their health plan, health care pro-

vider, county public health clinic or federally qualified health center (FQHC). They can also search for a clinic by ZIP code by visiting vaccinefinder.org, or by calling 211 or visiting 211info.org. In addition to getting vaccinated, health officials recommend people follow OHA and CDC guidance that empowers individuals at risk for severe illness to prepare for COVID-19 exposure and possible infection. The guidance includes: 1. Knowing your risk. Talk to your health care provider about whether your age, vaccination status or medical condition makes you more susceptible to severe COVID-19 illness. 2. Making a plan. Think about how you’ll protect yourself and those around you if you become ill with COVID-19, or if your community’s transmission level changes. 3. Taking action when needed. Get tested if you have symptoms. If you test positive, contact your health care provider for treatment – such as with the antiviral medication Paxlovid for those at increased risk and those with severe illness – or consider telehealth options; let those around you know they may have been exposed; stay home until fever free for 24 hours and symptoms are improving; wear a high-quality, well-fitting mask for 10 days after you become sick or test positive; and avoid contact with high-risk individuals for 10 days.

Will this be the end of their relationship or will there be Elf wedding bells? No audition is required to participate in the Ensemble of the Follies, which sings group holiday songs, participates in small scenes, and has a few, various featured moments within the core script. “This year, we will be particularly looking for several men (and a few women), willing to dress in Elvis jumpsuits,” said Heard. “Most are non-speaking roles, but need to be willing to be silly and act like a Flying El-

vis. You will be responsible for purchasing your own white Elvis jumpsuit.” Other Ensemble members will perform as townspeople and people who are arriving/departing at the North Pole airport. Kids will be considered for Dear Santa letters and a few small vocal features. Due to the large cast size and limited supervision capabilities, young children may not participate without an adult or older (teen) sibling in the cast. “Parents, even if you have never been onstage, this is your opportunity to have a little fun with your kiddo!” Heard said. “The Follies is focused on fun and is low stress and not a big rehearsal commitment. It is a beloved community annual tradition.”

A rehearsal schedule and participation form/waiver will be available at the meeting. In general, rehearsals will be held M-Th evenings from 6:30-9:00 pm, and possibly a couple of Saturdays (TBA). There will be no rehearsals on Wednesday through Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. Not all cast members will be required to attend all rehearsals. Tech week is Nov. 27 through 30. Three Rivers Casino Pioneers teaches slot technicians in Oregon Three Rivers Casino, a leading establishment in the gaming industry, is revolutionizing the slot technician landscape in Oregon by introducing the innovative “Oregon Tech Training” program. Jake Isham, the Slot Technical Manager at Three Rivers Casino, is spearheading this groundbreaking initiative, which aims to strengthen the expertise of slot technicians across the state while fostering a sense of community among tribal casinos. In the past year, Isham collaborated with all of the tribal casinos in Oregon to launch the “Oregon Tech Training’’ program. The primary objective is to host slot-related training sessions facilitated by esteemed gaming industry vendors on a

rotational basis among the participating casinos. This collective effort not only enhances the knowledge of slot technicians but also provides them with valuable networking opportunities to exchange insights, discuss challenges, and explore effective fixes. “We believe that by fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous learning, we can raise the bar for the entire gaming community in Oregon,” Isham said. “Our vision is to cultivate a highly skilled workforce that can deliver unparalleled service to our valued customers.” Three Rivers Casino hosted the first annual training program this month taught by IGT on their Peak slant top cabinets. The technicians received certification that acknowledges their professional and continuous learning in a dynamic industry. 16 technicians from six out of the eight casinos in Oregon attended the training demonstrating the strong support and active involvement of the tribal casino community in this program. “An unexpected bonus of attending training was being able to see how other properties do things and learn the logic behind it. There were many elements that were made more understandable or clear by being able to talk to other trained profes-

sionals,” added attendee Christopher Meeds, Slot Tech Lead- Spirit Mountain Casino. President Biden nominates Lane Co. magistrate to federal judgeship By Peter Wong U.S. Magistrate Mustafa Kasubhai, a former Lane County judge, has been nominated for a U.S. District Court judgeship in Oregon. President Joe Biden announced his nomination on Wednesday, Sept. 6. It is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate. He was among the nominees submitted by U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley from a screening committee. The final selection was up to Biden. The senators issued this statement: “The nominee brings an outstanding mix of experience as a federal magistrate, a trial judge in Lane County and attorney in private practice representing workers seeking justice. Magistrate Kasubhai is a standout nominee, and we very much look forward to helping him advance quickly through the Senate confirmation process.” Kasubhai has been a federal magistrate since 2018. He was on the Lane

Fleagle taught first and second grades for 22 years, worked as editor/ staff writer at Oregon Coast and Northwest Travel magazines for 21 years, and since retiring has written six books of

which two are histories, two coastal travel guides, and two memoirs as well as a weekly blog. She co-founded the Florence Festival of Books 12 years ago, which corresponds with her time as an author. And throughout the day, talk one-on-one with the authors and publishers as they fill the FEC with their books and knowledge. Participating this year will be 11 authors including Fleagle, Hickson, Woods, and the following: • Pattie Brooks Anderson is an artist and author, who has written two ecological themed children’s books and a novel for women, “Sea Change,” set on the Oregon Coast. • Cy Bishop obtained a degree in Counseling Psychology from Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington, which he use to create fully dimensional characters with unique personalities and quirks

in his writing. • Connie Strome Bradley has written three children’s books since retiring to Florence. She was a nurse and military wife for 65 years, and was a co-founder of the Florence Festival of Books in 2011. • Karen D. Nichols is an artist as well as an author. She has written numerous novels all having a romance, dog story, mystery, and an unexpected ending. • Day Owen is the owner of Lighthouse Spiritual Bookstore in Old Town and publishes his books through the non-profit organization he runs called Circle of Lovers. He also teaches yoga and meditation. • Nancy Rhodes published her first novel, “Blue Song,” in 2021, which shows her passion for whales and travel. She is currently working on a sequel. • Linda Ruzich is a retired school teacher, who was inspired by taking

photos of her dog, Ace, to write a children’s book filled with his pictures. • Darlene Weingand writes about Tamara, who has a secret. Tracing her heritage leads her into dangerous journeys and mysterious outcomes. Also expected are the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who publish Bible and Bible based publications in print and electronic format. Twisted Haunted Maze - can you make it out alive? Will you enter the dark and terrifying realm of Alura Botanica? Her gnarled branches will twist and contort your every fear into reality, right before your eyes. Once she has you in her firm and unforgiving grasp, she will never let you go. Voted “Best Haunt in Oregon 2018” by Oregon Haunted Houses, the Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) sixth ScareC.R.O.W. Haunted Maze, entitled “Twisted” will be held four nights - October 27 - 30 from 6 to 9 p.m., and Oct. 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. A less scary “Family Hour” geared toward younger kids and big chickens will be held on Saturday, October 28th from 5-6 p.m., with the maze transitioning back to very scary at 6 p.m. Suggested minimum age for the regular maze is 8-plus, and entry is always at parents’ discretion, and at your own risk. This year, for the first time, the

maze will be held at the Florence Events Center at 715 Quince Street, allowing CROW to have double the space for quadruple the scares! “This year’s maze is so freaky that it will twist your mind,” said CROW’s Artistic Director and maze co-designer, Melanie Heard. The original maze concept about an evil tree luring victims to their demise was Heard’s, but that she is excited to be co-designing with her good friend Brian Sandahl – a retired senior art director from Disneyland who was known as “The Pumpkin King” for his Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion overlay. “Brian and I work really well together and we have some incredible surprises up our sleeves,” said Heard. “We are definitely a deadly duo.” Sandahl added, “I’ve designed a lot of odd things in the past but Alura Botanica, this TWISTED tree, is going to be one

ghoulishly gory creation. I’ve been known for my nightmarish designs for a certain Haunted Mansion at Disneyland...and all that TWISTED experience is sure to help out as we put together the haunted maze. It’s guaranteed to have you screaming your head off!” After a forced hiatus due to COVID, CROW is back with a vengeance, ready to terrify and entertain. The non-profit’s “Freak Show” (2019) and “Quarantine” (2018) mazes showed so much deadly appeal that over 1000 guests passed through, traveling from as far away as Astoria, Bandon, Eugene/Springfield, Brookings, Washington and California, and beyond. “CROW is known for our exceptionally high quality production values for every project, including costumes, make-up, scenic design elements, props, lighting, sound, and acting components,” said Heard. “I’d also like to add that our Haunt-

ed Maze is a fundraiser for the entire CROW non-profit program, and any funds directly benefit the entire youth arts program. Yachats transforms into a German village for Oktoberfest Oktoberfest is a vibrant and lively festival celebrating German culture, mainly through its traditional music, dancing, beer, and food. Yachats has it all. Friday, Sept. 29 at Yachats City Commons, the “Tapping of the Keg” singing of the Yachats Oktoberfest song accompanied by a 13-piece accordion band. The evening continues with Polkafest, a lively event featuring dancing, beer, and bratwurst. Admission to Friday events is free, with beer and brats available for purchase. Saturday, Sept. 30, the celebration spreads throughout the village. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can participate in the Volkswalk, visiting unique shops and having your

prize-eligible Oktoberfest Passport checked. Later there will be wine-tasting of German wines, and beer tasting of the unique beer, made exclusively for the festival, plus a homebrew workshop by the Yachats Brewer. Saturday evening, the festivities return to Yachats Commons for the Oktoberfest Dinner/Dance with the first seating from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by the second from 7 to 9 p.m. The Yachats Oktoberfest Accordion Polka Band will entertain dancers and Yachats Big Band will lead the Hofbräuhaus Song, with new words honoring the Oktoberfest Yachats Beer. He joined the World Bank in 2010 where he developed a $1 billion portfolio of investments in sustainable aquaculture and fisheries in Peru, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Morocco, Romania, Kazakhstan, the Maldives,

and many more nations. He retired to Florence in 2022, but continues to work on sustainable fisheries with the ODFW Salmon & Trout Enhancement Program, Angler’s Education and the Oregon Anglers Alliance. State’s Lifeline program offers discounts on phone and internet In celebration of National Lifeline Awareness Week, which runs Sept. 11 through 15, the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) is reminding Oregonians about Lifeline, a federal and state government program that provides discounted or free phone or high-speed internet service to qualifying low-income households. Oregon Lifeline is currently offering a monthly discount up to $15.25 for phone service or $19.25 per month for high-speed internet service through participating service pro-

viders. Lifeline also offers free wireless voice minutes and data service from Access Wireless where coverage is available. Football Viking’s football will hold its first home game of the season tonight as they open league play against La Pine at 7 p.m. The game comes after a loss last on Aug. 8 to the Kennedy Trojans, who took control of the game in the first half with three short touchdowns. Sophomore running back Will Johnson scored with the Viking’s fifth possession just before halftime, but were unable to make a comeback in the second half, ending the game 6-23. After tonight’s game with La Pine, it’s back on the road as they travel to Harrisburg on Sept. 22, gametime at 7 p.m. Volleyball Siuslaw Volleyball went into last week with a pair of away games. A close win in Sutherlin on Aug. 23 (3-2) led into a 3-1 victory against Harrisburg on Sept. 7, their first league game of the season. Then it’s back on the road as they travel to Harrisburg on Sept. 22. Both games begin at 7 p.m. This week, they played La Pine on Sept. 12, and hosted Creswell on Sept. 14 - both games occurred after press time. Their next game will be on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Elmira at 6:30 p.m., followed by hosting Sisters at home on Sept. 21, also at 6:30 p.m.

The Siuslaw/Mapleton Boys Soccer program had a win against Sutherlin on Sept. 7, sweeping the bulldogs 7-0 at Hans Petersen Field. “Our team controlled the ball for most of the game, and in the first half we got 21 shots,” coach Londi Tomaro said, adding the team put away 4 goals in the first half. “In the second half we continued to play at our level and controlled the intensity of the game.” On Sept. 14, the boys played at Sweet Home (after press time), while on Thursday, Sept. 21, they’ll be hosting their first

rate.” The Marines widened the road, allowing volunteers with the camp to bring their vehicles in, as well as adding lights to the parking lot. Many of these projects have been in the process for years. “We’re talking tens of thousands of dollars in donated time, community time, to improve the camp - these guys have helped bring that forward,” Anderson said. The improvements will help the camp host in a variety of events, beyond BSA events. Baker hosts an autism camp, churches, and various community groups who utilize their facilities. And the community came out to help the Marines. “People found out that they would just be eating MRE’s, and they wanted to have them eat real food,” Anderson said,

describing a variety of foods that were brought in by various groups and individuals. “Somebody put it on Facebook, and we had volunteer cooks bring all sorts of food for the Marines. The community was awesome.” For the Marines, the partnership represents a chance to train so they can be deployed effectively, working in both combat and humanitarian missions. “On my last deployment, I was in Iraq helping with all the survivability conditions, like the posts where they have the gun positions,” Sergeant Anderson said. “I also went to the Philippians to build schools. We do a lot of humanitarian work where we’re building and are doing construction.” The knowledge also gets passed on to different coun-

tries, as Sgt. Raul Deanda said, who recently returned from a mission in South Korea. “We show them how we operate in America and they show us how they do things in Korea for integrated training,” he said. “We’re assisting to create a road for the army base.” The training comes full circle, as Lance Corporal Joel Shewmaker explained. Five years ago, the Portland native wanted to be a high school teacher, with an interest in construction work. So, I thought I’d enlist because of the construction work. … Five years later, here I am. I’m currently a teacher.” All this knowledge went into the process of helping Camp Baker. “It’s been crazy, but it’s just been awesome,” Stan Anderson said.

A coalition of over twenty climate organizations are organizing strikes in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, and Florence on Friday to demand that Governor Tina Kotek declare a climate emergency. A climate emergency declaration would allow the state government to act swiftly to reduce Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions, as well as address issues such as sustainable housing and transportation. The University of Oregon will lead a new multi-institution earthquake research center, which will receive $15 million from the National Science Foundation over five years to study the Cascadia subduction zone and bolster earthquake preparedness in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (CRESCENT) will be the first center of its kind in the nation focused on earthquakes at subduction zones, where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. The center will unite scientists studying the possible impacts of a major earthquake along the Cascadia subduction zone, an offshore tectonic plate boundary that stretches more than 1000 kilometers from southern British Columbia to northern California. It will advance earthquake research, foster community partnerships, and diversify and train the next generation geosciences work force. “The main goal of the center is to bring together the large group of geoscientists working in Cascadia to march together to the beat of a singular drum,” said Diego Melgar, associate professor of earth sciences at the University of Oregon and the director of the new center. “The center organizes us, focuses collaboration, and identifies key priorities, rather than these institutions competing.” CRESCENT includes researchers from 16 insti-
