US Forest Service discusses Three Buttes Fire

“When we listed this group, it was important to us to find a company with ties to the coast,” Tompkins added. “We couldn’t be more pleased that Steve and Carol Hungerford of Country Media are the new owners. We know they are committed to local journalism. They have more people and more resources to make these individual publications even stronger.” Country Media, founded in 2000, also is a family-run company focusing on local journalism. Carol and husband Steve Hungerford oversee the business from the central office in Salem. Veteran newspaper executive David Thornberry, who lives in Florence, serves as Country Media’s chief executive. “Carol and I are longtime Oregon residents and know full well what Florence, Cottage Grove and Newport mean to this state and its residents,” said Steve Hungerford. “Being involved with these newspapers is a very meaningful step for us and our colleagues.” “We’re grateful to the Tompkins family for the opportunity to build on their heritage here,” added Carol Hungerford. “We’re committed to sustaining these newspapers for many years to come.”

The Three Buttes fire continues its burn north of Florence, as 181 fire personnel have been working on suppressing the 144 acre fire. Included in the effort are 3 fire crews, 8 engines and 26 heavy equipment. We’ve had 160 plus people working this indirect fire line all around the perimeter of the fire, boxing it in, and we’re nearing completion of that,” US Forest Service Siuslaw Management Officer Nathan Shinkle told Siuslaw News. “We are in this until the bitter end. We’re working with every tool available to us to do it in a safe manner for the firefighters and the com-

munities. The fire began on Aug. 16, sparked by lightning deep in the Siuslaw Forest. It was first reported at 65 acres and soon jumped to 145, “but that was due to the fact we hadn’t been able to map it during those days,” Shinkle said.

The fire itself has remained steady at that acreage as crews have worked to suppress the fire, helped in part by cooler temperatures this week and small rainstorms soon after the fire began. While the fire is 11 miles from Florence as

the crow flies, it takes crews an hour-and-a-half to leave from their base camp in Florence to the fire’s edge. Shinkle does not believe the fire will grow large enough to threaten communities like Deadwood, Swisshome, Mapleton and Florence. “It’s not something we’re concerned with, as far as making an impact on those communities,” he said. “It’s in a real remote piece of ground. We’re not concerned it’s going to move that much.” At press time (Sept. 6) the lightning caused fire was still at zero percent containment, but Shinkle See FIRE page 4A

The state of childcare in the Siuslaw region City of Florence and childcare providers discuss challenges, plans for childcare The current landscape of childcare in the Siuslaw region, along with current efforts and challenges facing childcare providers, was the topic of discussion for the City of Florence during an Aug. 24 work session which included the City Council, staff, and various stakeholders in childcare, including Siuslaw Family Connection, Onward Eugene, Head Start and Onward Eugene. “We have been working with them for well over a year in the childcare arena,” City of Florence Manger Erin Reynolds said opening the meeting.

“There are quite a bit of elements of quality of life and livability, making it possible for people to have a full life experience, have their careers, their jobs, earn income and be able to have a place for their children. We want to bring everybody up to speed on the current efforts, the landscape and the challenges.” And the challenges are steep, with Lane County as a whole being listed as a “childcare desert,” with only 16 available childcare slots for every 100 children in the county. News Media Corporation has announced the September 1 sale of the Newport News Times to an Oregon-based media company. Included in the sale is the Sentinel in Cottage Grove and the Siuslaw News in Florence, along with the three weekly newspapers’ websites, digital products and specialty publications. The buyer is Country Media, Inc., which owns eight community newspapers in Oregon and one in northern California. News Media Corporation, headquartered in Rochelle, IL, has owned up to 75 newspapers and digital companies in nine states. It was founded by the late John C. Tompkins in 1975 and continues the family’s ownership under his son, JJ Tompkins, who serves as president and CEO. News Media purchased the Siuslaw News in 2000, and the News Times and Cottage Grove Sentinel in 2006. “News Media Corporation is proud of its 20plus years doing business in Oregon,” NMC’s JJ Tompkins said. “It has been a successful run and would not have been possible without the many dedicated employees who have worked at these offices. We are so grateful for them.

As of right now, there are only a handful of childcare providers, which include Bright Beginnings, Little Blue Birds, Wildflower Montessori, Head Start and Early Childhood CARES, Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County, and four licensed providers, two of which are providing services exclusively for family members. “In total, these provide care for about 115 children in the 0-5 aged category, and about 83

in the school aged category,” Holly Mar-Conte, Child Sector Strategist for OnWard Eugene said during the meeting. However, “we know that there are about 581 children in that 0-5 age group at 115 slots. And then over 500 kids in K-5, and only 83 being served with after school opportunities. You start to see the gap.” Reynolds added that the numbers show the trend in the region’s growing population. “In the next two years, there’ll be almost double the amount of kids in high school than there was in See CHILD page 6A

Stop the Bleed By Bob Horney and WLFEA Chief Michael Schick If you are reading this and are on a blood thinner or anti-platelet, please raise your hand. Now, if you have been instructed on how to stop the bleeding, please raise your hand again. Strange, but not unexpected, I don’t see nearly as many hands in the air. Yes, I was one of those who raised my hand as being on an anti-platelet but not being instructed on what to do if I should happen to cut myself. You may remember that I wrote an article in the Siuslaw News about my New Eve’s Heart Attack and two of our Critical-Care Paramedics, Charlie and David, rushing me to Coos Bay Area Hospital while dissolving the life-threatening clots on the trip and saving my

life. Well, I was placed on Brilinta to prevent future clots (along with 3 stents) on New Year’s Day and discharged on January 2. That was it. Come March 19, I sustained about a ½ inch cut in the palm of my hand and found out what it was like to “really” bleed. That resulted in a couple calls, visits to Walk-In Clinic and, most importantly, instruction/demonstration of bleeding wound care by our super Triage Nurses. Naturally, right at the top of the list was “much” extended, direct compression (pressure) on the wound to: Stop the Bleed. It was at that point following my cut that I knew I didn’t have enough information dealing with Brilinta and bleeding. I had to make up my mind whether I needed help See STB page 5A

as a substitute teacher and an educational assistant and served as a leader of St. Anne’s Guild through St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Jim operated several service stations in Florence, and she was proud that he won the national windshield wiper contest through ANCO award for excellent service in 1960 that enabled them to take the entire family to Disneyland. They moved to Eugene in 1967 when Jim became a safety engineer with the State Accident Insurance Fund. Ellen enjoyed working in customer service at the Meier and Frank department store. Jim died in 2001. She moved to Solvang Independent Retirement Living in 2015 where she remained a valued and engaged member of the community until entering Hospice care. Ellen was involved in many service and community organizations throughout her lifetime. She was active in the PTA, the PEO, an organization committed to helping women pursue higher education, and helped to establish St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Florence. She was also active in the Siuslaw Alumni Association, having planned and attended many class reunions over the years. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, a Women’s Fraternity, which she shared with her daughter. She was an enthusiastic member of

She will be fondly remembered as an intelligent, fun-loving and caring companion and will be missed by many. She came of age during the period of innovation in home economics and mastered these tools and techniques to create and run a beautiful and highly efficient home for her family. She enjoyed creating memorable holiday and birthday celebrations for her family and everyone looked forward to finding out how many coins they would find in the angel food birthday cake that year.

The more adults there, the better structure happens inside the classrooms.” But more adults means less space, which in turn means less capacity. “Currently we’re struggling for sites all over the place,” she said. “In Lane County, we’re down serving 45 slots (kids and families) because we don’t have the facilities.” Mar-Conte pointed out that the issues facing the region are being seen across Oregon and the nation. Solutions As to finding solutions, the first step is gaining more information to understand where resources are. “Siuslaw Vision is doing a community survey,” Mar-Conte said. “The intent is to run the survey, and then have those trainings start this fall and see how we can support people on generating more childcare.” The survey can be found at https://siuslawvision. org/surveys/. Currently, the survey is scheduled to end Sept. 20, but Siuslaw Vision is monitoring responses and will adjust accordingly. Residents can also call 211, which is a state program. Like calling 911, the number helps community members find resources on a variety of issues, from helping to pay rent and utilities, to finding childcare. Locally, around 100 people in Florence called 211 looking for childcare in the past year, though Mar-Conte encouraged more people to call. Recently, the state legislature made a $55 million investment in childcare infrastructure that is running through Business Oregon. “I want to mention our childcare resource and referral agencies across the state,” Mar-Conte said. “We have Quality Care Connections in Lane County (QCC), which is housed over at LCC main campus. They are the entity that supports childcare providers. … They help people start childcare businesses and help teachers and aides entering the field. They are a wealth of information.” QCC has two training programs to help bolster training in childcare. “One is a fast-track program. Anyone interested in entering the childcare field, usually at an aide level, can go in one weekend and complete all their prerequisites to be safe in the classroom - CPR, food handlers,” Mar-Conte said. “Theoretically they could go on a Saturday and complete their training on a Monday. It’s free.” There is also the Early Childcare Business Accelerators program, a four-

month course for people interested in starting a childcare business, or who recently opened one. “The Small Business Development Center in Lane County provides all the training you need to know, - developing a business plan, setting up a budget, how to develop a profit and loss, all of the nuts and bolts of business,” said Mar-Conte. “Every graduate of the program receives a $5,000 grant to put into their business. We have space right now for eight people. There is also the possibility of the Oregon Child Care Alliance coming to Lane County in the future which provides ongoing business coaching for childcare providers. The program is working in other counties at the moment, and Lane is working to bring them here. For the City of Florence, work will have to be done on regulations and city zoning, allowing for more childcare centers throughout the city. “And then there’s the ongoing search for facility space,” Mar-Conte said. “There are some exciting conversations and opportunities around how we collaborate and look at opportunities to share space.” She mentioned a new project by First Step that will be focusing on transitional housing, which could also incorporate classroom space for children with Head Start. Different organizations sharing space, such as the Boys and Girls Club center, is also a possibility, while building a large facility that would house various types of providers has been discussed. “I think what we really need is someone in the community who has the capacity and the ability to help push these conversations along,” Mar-Conte said. “The training will roll out, and we all work towards that common vision of one shared space where we can house a lot of different services.” Wantz closed the meeting by emphasizing the stakes involved. “This isn’t just about finding a place for the kids to go. This is about families being able to have a life here in Florence. This is so we can say to the people we have housing, we have childcare, we have the ability to share with you the resources you need,” she said. “ It’s hard. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do it. When the fire was first being discovered, a hotshot crew was sent into the area that was supposed to take an hour and a half to complete. “They split up and it took them four-anda-half hours to crawl through the perimeter of the fire, and normally you’d expect a hotshot crew to take an hour, tops.” Shinkle said. “Originally, we were trying to get dozers down into it. Every scouting mission came back that it just wasn’t country we could get equipment into.”

STEP Program with Randall Brummett The library is pleased to present fish biologist Randall Brummett, with the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP), on Saturday, Sept. 16th at 1 pm, in the Bromley Room. The plight of salmon in the Pacific Northwest has been a subject of concern for fishers and conservationists since the turn of the last century. Dams, irrigation, pollution, gravel removal, logging, mining, poldering and draining of wetlands have dramatically reduced reproductive habitat. Even when they can find a place to spawn, over-fishing and now climate change impact the survival of juveniles and adults. The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife through the STEP program is fighting back to restore salmon

runs for future generations. STEP volunteers are rehabilitating spawning grounds, operating local hatcheries to supplement stocks and working to educate the public about how to sustainably use natural resources. Randall Brummett, a locally grown and internationally known fisheries biologist, will review the history of salmon in Oregon and share perspectives on how we can work with nature to ensure good fishing. Technology Open Lab The next Technology Open Lab will be on Tuesday, Sept. 19th, from 1 to 3 pm, in the Bromley Room. If you’ve got questions about your phone, tablet, or computer, this lab is the place to ask them! Bring your device if you can, along with any necessary power cords and passwords. Help is first come, first served, as time allows. Tech Labs are held the third Tuesday of each month at 1 pm.

While the terrain is difficult to navigate, the landscape works in their effort to fight the fire. On one side of the fire runs a river that is wider than what a fireline would be. “On the eastern side, we have a good chunk of handline that’s been put in,” Shinkle said. “There are some pieces in between where we can’t connect the dots, but we’re taking action to really control the fire and the movement. We’re doing a lot. We don’t have to have a traditional containment, but there are a lot of natural barriers. The progression and the size of the fire has really

stayed put due to our actions.” As for when the fire will officially be over, Joanie Schmidgall of the US Forest Service said that nature will be the ultimate decider. “We’re looking for a season ending event that’s when we get enough rain that penetrates the canopy,” she said. “We use the term wetting rain. We have had rain that’s slowed things down and it’s done the firefighters a big favor. But because it is so dense, we just haven’t had the level of rain needed for that season ending event yet.” Until that point, Shinkle and the forest service will be working on the fire. “We’re committed to this until the end,” he said. “We will be staffing this until we either can say we’ve put the fire out, or until we keep it parked and in place and nature helps us put it out.”

ourselves with needles. My punctures are due to weekly home infusions for Gammaglobulin (since 2016) which my body doesn’t produce. I use 3 subcutaneous needles each week across my abdomen. Occasionally, when removing a needle after the hour’s infusion, blood will SPURT forth, ending up on the counter, my pants and floor. All this before I can safely get the needle out of my hand and grab a piece of gauze right in front of me so I can Stop the Bleed. Fortunately, I have everything I need to quickly put a stop to it. Being on blood thinner Plavix, it just “goes with the territory.” I’ve adjusted to it. I now have for my use, 3 widths of steri-strips (1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inch) and New Skin (off the shelf at Fred Meyer). I’m sure something is similar wherever you shop – or ask at your pharmacy, Incidentally, I did call Prefontaine Cardiac Clinic in Coos Bay and related my experience to one of the nurses and made a strong recommendation that any patient admitted and put on a blood thinner/anti-platelet should NOT be discharged without receiving information/ demonstration on how to Stop the Bleed. They should also leave the hospital with a kit containing steri-strips and other necessary materials. She agreed wholeheartedly, thanked me and said she would start assembling the kits right then. Now, I turn it over to WLFEA Chief Michael Schick. After reading his information (which is what we should have left the hospital or doctor’s office with), I suggest everyone cut that information from the newspaper,

read it again very carefully and SAVE IT. Store it somewhere you will remember it – like with first-aid kits, etc. WLFEA Chief Michael Schick’s comments: When an injury occurs and there is external bleeding, the most important thing to do is stop it. Try and find the exact source of bleeding and apply continuous direct pressure using a clean gauze, bandage, napkin, towel, etc. It is more effective to apply localized pressure to the source of bleeding rather than general pressure over a large area (i.e., applying pressure with a finger over a small cut rather than your whole hand). Keep the pressure applied for at least ten minutes or until the bleeding stops. Try not to remove the pressure and bandage to peek at the wound because you could remove or dislodge any type of clot forming. Apply additional gauze as necessary. For larger injuries, don’t be afraid to pack material inside of a wound or apply a tourniquet to an extremity. Internal bleeding can also occur and can be much more serious because there is no way for us to mitigate it on our own. Be prepared to bruise easier and have more pronounced bruising than others. Blood thinners, antiplatelets, anticoagulants, heparins, etc. are all medications that may be prescribed to you if you are at risk of developing blood clots. These medications reduce the risk of abnormal clot formation that could lead to health emergencies such as a stroke or heart attack, however. They do this by interrupting the

body’s normal process of forming and breaking down blood clots. People on anti-clotting medications can be at risk for serious, and sometimes life-threatening, bleeding. Following a small cut or bruise your body is actively trying to stop the bleeding by forming a clot and then removing that clot when the bleeding has stopped. This process can be severely impacted for patients on anti-clotting medication. As emergency care providers one of our biggest concerns is when someone is on these medications and then falls and hits their head. As part of the normal aging process, our brains atrophy (shrink) which can put tension on blood vessels inside of the head. Add in anti-clotting medications and the risk of a bleed is significantly higher, even with a minor bump. When someone hits their head, the resulting blood vessel damage and the inability to sufficiently stop the bleeding can be fatal. We recommend that a patient who suffers a fall with a potential injury to the head, even a very minor one, and is on anti-clotting medication has a medical evaluation. That’s why what may seem like a very minor fall to you or a loved one is of major concern to your Paramedics. If you have no one available to drive you to the hospital emergency department, please do not hesitate to call 911. Our Paramedics will evaluate you in your own home and transport you to the emergency department in they determine further evaluation is needed. They are also very happy to determine you are in no danger from the fall.

The Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library District will host Oregon author Kay Jennings on Sunday, Sept. 10 at

2p.m. in the Bromley Room at the Library in Florence. Jennings recently published the sixth novel in her Port Sterling mystery series, “Mourning Bay,” which is set on the rugged southern Oregon Coast. The book features a twist-filled investigation into the death of a well-regarded leader of a local social services organization that keeps the readers guessing until the

very end. Jennings grew up in Southern Oregon and now lives in the Portland area, and is a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters In Crime, Willamette Writers, IBPA, and Oregon Writers Colony. Her novels, which feature a chief of police who moved from Texas to the small Oregon coast town of Port Sterling, appeals to fans of Marcia

Muller’s Sharon McCone mystery series, as well as fans of Harlan Coben, Elly Griffiths, Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. United Way of Lane County and 30 nonprofits are seeking volunteers for United Way’s annual “Days of Caring” volunteer event, taking place Sept. 21-23. Now in its 30th year, Days of Caring is an opportunity for companies, employees, families, and individuals to find meaningful, one-time volunteer opportunities with nonprofits throughout Lane County. Florence Food Share is one organization seeking volunteers. On Friday, Sept. 22, they’ll host the opportunity for

20 volunteers to help spruce up their garden, which produces fresh vegetables for their food pantry. 60 other projects will take place across Cottage Grove, Eugene, Springfield, Coburg, and more, and over 600 volunteers have already signed up, including employees from PacificSource, The Pape Group, OCCU, Lane County, and more. “United Way Days of Caring are such a great way for community members to volunteer, especially when they don’t know where to start,” said Megan

Romero, an employee with PacificSource. “It really gives people an opportunity to volunteer without feeling like it needs to be an every-week or every-month commitment.” “We’re thrilled to be in our 30th year of hosting Days of Caring,” said Noreen J. port High School’s Gene Morrow Field. Vikings junior Max Reynolds was the go-to guy on both sides of the ball for the Vikings, gobbling up 165 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns at running back. On defense, Reynolds made eight tackles, three for negative yardage. Siuslaw overcame some first-

half jitters that saw the Vikings commit three turnovers to take a 14-0 lead into halftime following a scoreless second quarter. Siuslaw sophomore Mika Blankenship added three touchdowns as the Vikings moved to 1-0 entering their game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at preseason No. 5 Kennedy in Mount Angel. The Trojans

began the campaign last week with a 43-0 win at Stanfield. Last Friday night, the Viking defense had its way with a Cubs program looking to establish a new culture in its second year at the 3A level. Siuslaw yielded 19 yards rushing on 26 Newport attempts, including eight plays that went for negative yardage.

Boys soccer comes out kicking against JC Siuslaw wins 1-0

The Siuslaw/Mapleton Boys Soccer controlled the ball for most of the game against Junction City as they won their first non-league game of the season 1-0 during the Aug. 31 match. “Our forwards and midfield moved the ball well and made effective use of space. Our defense did a great job of breaking up the Junction City plays and getting the ball back up the field to our attacking players,” said coach Londi Tomaro. Siuslaw took a total of 20 shots, 11 in the first half and 9 in the second half, demonstrating a balanced offense. “Eight different players had shots on

goal: Asher Borgnino, Camden Linton, Charles Nelson, Eli Tattershall, Ethan Jagoe, Kale Jensen, Nicholas May, and Ray Brito,” Tomaro said. “Over the course of the game, we had 3 corner kicks and 8 free kicks. We did not score from any of the set plays, but we got close on a few.” They successfully defended 3 corner kicks and 5 free kicks. “Both of our goalkeepers, Derrick Vanduch and Terrance Masterman, did a great job in the net. In the second half Terrance made 12 saves. Many of them were incredible displays of athleticism,” said Tomaro.

About a third of the way into the second half, the team scored the only point of the game when Charles Nelson put an absolute banger into the top right corner of the net from the top of the 18. “Although Junction City put on a concerted offensive press, which resulted in several of Terrance’s saves, we were able to hold them off and win the game,” Tomaro said. “This was a great first match for our team and a really solid place to build from as we prepare for league play.” The teams first league game will be held Sept 21 at 4:30 at Siuslaw against Elmira.

Last Resort Players casts “BOCA”

The Florence theater group Last Resort Players (LRP) has set the cast for its newest production - “BOCA” by Jessica Provenz. The cast of BOCA consists of three women and three men, most of whom portray dual characters seamlessly, and hilariously, throughout the play. BOCA is a comedy set in the present day about a luxury, 55-plus retirement gated community known as the Boca Oasis, nestled in the heart of Boca Raton, Florida. Among the residents of the Boca Oasis are a variety of interesting, complicated, funny and endearing characters, which include: Marty & Robbie will be played by Frank Knight - Marty, a curmudgeon and chronic complainer in his mid-70’s, lives in his beloved Yankees ball cap, is obsessed with all things New York, and is unhappily married to Deann. Robbie is in his late 60’s and considered the sexy “youngster” of the group. He’s easy going, charming and very happily married to Susan.

The characters will be played by Knight, a relatively new addition to Florence’s theater community, having last been seen in the hilarious LRP production of “Rumors.” Mo & Bruce will be played by Jim Wellington - Mo is a mid-70’s, northeast transplant with an ever-sunny disposition. He loves Jimmy Buffet, Hawaiian shirts, and shorts. Mo is always poised to break out in song at any moment. Bruce, in his early 70’s, is a retired corporate attorney, who’s sharptongued and decisive. He’s a sharp dresser and an avid golfer. With his wife’s recent passing, he’s one of the most eligible widowers in Boca. Wellington, a veteran of LRP, will play both characters. He has performed in dozens of productions over the last two decades. Susan & Deann will be played by Sheri Susee - Susan, in her mid-60’s, is Boca’s version of Mr. Rogers - nice, Catholic girl, Wellesley College alum, and former kindergarten teacher who is upbeat and happy-go-lucky.

Deann is a former Fortune 500 CEO who is wound tight as a drum, crazed about fitness, the unpopular president of the Boca Oasis Community Board, and miserably married to Marty. Susee, a well-respected local photographer and versatile actor, will be playing both roles. Janet & Iris will be played by Kristi Whittington - Janet is the sweetest, ditziest, most innocent “Boca Babe” who is well-preserved (by whatever means necessary), stylish, made-up, well coiffed, and on the hunt for husband number four. Iris,sullen and dour, is married to Mo, and after 48 years of marriage, finds his sunny optimism oppressive, yet somehow, can’t imagine her life with anyone else. Susee, a well-respected local photographer and versatile actor, will be playing both roles. Louise & Elaine will be played by Chris Lewis Lewis is not only an accomplished pianist, cellist, and musical conductor, she’s an experienced actor,

as well, having performed in LRP’s “Rumors.” Louise is a 60-something yoga instructor, who walks and talks like she’s in the yoga studio all the time. She is edgy, needy, and somewhat lost unlike Elaine, who is a feisty, fast-talking, very competent, Italian divorcee, along with her three Pomeranians, is “on the hunt” for the perfect mate. Stan will be played by James McKinney - Stan is the ancient Treasurer for the Boca Oasis Board who is the oldest of the group, and loves dog Tippy. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) will begin issuing approximately $39 million in Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) food benefits to approximately 325,000 students in Oregon on Aug. 31. “We are grateful to be able to provide these food benefits to eligible students in Oregon,” said Claire Seguin, director of the ODHS Self-Sufficiency Programs. “As communities continue to be affected by COVID-19 and the rising cost of food, we know that many families are experiencing hardship and are

struggling to get enough healthy food for themselves and their children. FLORENCE’S 15TH ANNUAL CAR SHOW Hot rods ‘n smoking deals in Florence this weekend

lorence is revving-up for both the annual Rods N Rhodies Invitational Car Show and Benefit and the Community-wide Garage Sale. This year’s edition takes place primarily in and around Historic Old Town Florence on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8 and 9. The Community-wide Garage Sale continues through Sunday, Sept. 10. “At Rods N Rhodies, you know you’ll see some of the West Coast’s most gorgeous, amazing, awe-inspiring hot rods all around town,” said organizer Gary Cargill. “Up to 125 of the west coast’s best high-end hot rods, rat rods, and custom cruisers from 1976 and earlier will be in town.” Though known primarily for the annual September event, Rods N Rhodies became its own local volunteer-led nonprofit in 2018 with a renewed vision to provide automotive assistance to locals in need. In May, Rods N Rhodies Inc. also hosted a show and shine during Rhody Days. All its events are a benefit for their mission and goals. Friday starts with an all-comers “Kool Car StandAround” show-and-shine at the Port of Siuslaw parking lot at the east end of Bay Street. There will be food, music and 100+ cars on display, including past event winners. Owners of any classic car are welcome to exhibit along with the invited vehicles. Rods N Rhodies’ main event takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Bay Street. The event also
