Agency recommends decertification Tardif unseats incumbent Hyde of former Clatskanie police chief BY CHRISTY CABALLERO ccaballero@countrymedia.net

Former Clatskanie Chief of Police Marvin Hoover could lose his certification for up to 15 years. On May 19, the Police Policy Committee of the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training recommended the revocation of Hoover’s certification for seven years for Misconduct, 10 years for Gross Misconduct, and 15 years for Disregard for the Rights of Others. The revocation periods would run concurrently. According to Eriks Gabliks, Director of the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, two members of the committee - Chief Matt Workman and Special Agent Mike Wells - recused themselves from the discussion and deliberation of this case because they were either involved in the case or know Hoover.

Marvin Hoover served as Clatskanie Chief of Police from 2002 until 2015. He retired during an investigation into alleged misconduct after he was reported for alleged racist remarks.
Change is imminent for the Columbia County Board of Commissioners as Tony Hyde, a nearly 20-year incumbent, prepares to make way for Alex Tardif to assume Position 3 in January. “I’m concerning myself with where we’re headed,” Tony Hyde commented Monday. “I’m not sure how to react at this point.” Alex Tardif said he’s excited that “The voters have spoken, now it’s time to roll up our sleeves – I’m honored by their vote of confidence.” Hyde’s facebook page cited his disappointment, and the honor of serving Columbia County for the past 20 years. He stated “This position has never been just a job to me, and you never were just voters. We live in a special place and over the years I have come to know many of you as friends. Moving forward I urge you to stay involved, bridge our differences, and let your voice be heard. I hope that I have left this county a better place, I sure know that it has made me a better man. My sincerest thanks for your continued years of support, Tony.” Tardif put in his bid for Position 3 on the board of commissioners, capturing a surprising 51 percent of the vote, leaving Hyde with 48 percent. Catching Tardif for comments after a meeting, he said “I think the people are ready to see some change, it’s definitely a big win for Columbia County. I’m so grateful for the people’s level of belief in me.” Tardif said he prides himself on the fact that “you may not always like what I have to say, but I’m always going to speak what I believe is the truth. I ran my campaign on accountability and transparency it’s very near and dear to my heart.” “A lot of people have seen me grow up here and believe I will give them their voice at county level; you represent the people, you’re doing what’s right for the people. I support the people whether we agree or not. By the people, for the people, do what’s right for them – I believe that 100 percent.” With the race for Position 1 between Wayne Mayo and Margaret Magruder still to be decided, Tardiff said “I’m excited for the opportunity to work with either one of them, and do some exciting things for the people of this county.” “We’ve got to be real about the work we’ve got to do – but I’m excited to jump in!”
