For healthier eating, grill more in the new year Planning to follow a trendy diet like keto in 2020 or simply want to eat right? There’s good news -- grilling can be a great option for you to kickstart eating healthier in the new year. Indeed, the American Heart Association recommends it. “Grilling is a year-round way of life, bringing together family and friends,” says Jeff Thiessen, president of Pit Boss Grills. “Luckily, those watching their diets can still get healthy foods with the fun and flavor of a backyard barbecue.” Use these tips to make healthier meals prepared on the grill: • Let your spices do the heavy lifting: You can add exciting and bold flavor to any recipe using seasoning mixtures. Spice up foods like veggies or lean meats with seasoned rubs or marinades for amazing flavor without all the calories. • Eat fresher: Round out recipes by including fresh vegetables. For the best flavor and highest nutritional value, look for locally-grown produce. Vegetables make an excellent addition to any meal as grilled kabobs or chopped up and tossed in your favorite chili. • Be versatile: A healthy diet is a versatile diet. Look for a grill offering multiple cooking options, including baking, roasting and smoking, such as Pit Boss Grills.

• 1 3-inch ginger, fresh • 1-2 limes • 4 cups no sodium added chicken bone broth • 1/4 cup olive oil • 4 teaspoons paprika • 6-8 pounds pork shoulder/butt • 1/2 sweet onion • 2 packets Truvia • 2 tablespoons Truvia Nectar Directions:
• 2 cups aloe leaf juice • 1 teaspoon coriander, ground • 2 teaspoons cracked pepper • 1 teaspoon cumin • Dash of salt • 4-6 garlic cloves
• Set grill to “smoke.” Once the pot catches, turn the grill up to 300 degrees F. Make sure your flame broiler is closed, you’ll want to use indirect heat.
1. Mix metals. If you love combining gold with stainless or bronze with nickel in your everyday décor, there’s no need to stop mixing metals when it comes to holiday decorating. The glitzy combination of copper and silver or black and chrome look festive without overwhelming your year-round color palette. Consider combining various metallic accents through garland ornaments and holiday tablescapes. You can even extend the look to your bathroom faucet. Traditional red and green décor may not be for you, but you can still deck the halls, even with an industrialchic style. The key to creating an edgier holiday look is to combine utilitarian design with worn textures from raw materials. Think galvanized metal accents, Edison bulb string lights, copper pipe candle holders and upcycled pieces. • Add spices to a bowl. Set aside. • Grate ginger into a separate “wet ingredients” bowl. Mince garlic cloves and dice onions into the same bowl. Juice limes and add chicken bone broth, aloe leaf juice, Truvia and Truvia Nectar. Mix and set bowl aside. • Add the oil to your Pit Boss Cast Iron Roasting Pan and coat the bottom and sides. Place pork inside. • Coat pork with dry rub. • Pour wet ingredients around the pork. Cover with lid and set on the grill. • Check every couple hours, basting if needed. When internal temperature reaches 195 degrees F (after 6-8 hours), it should easily start to pull apart. Don’t pull apart the whole shoulder yet. • Remove roasting pan from grill and set aside for 1 hour. Remove lid to help speed cooling. • Once cooled, shred pork into a separate bowl, removing fat. If adding marinade for additional flavor, skim fat off the top and discard. • Pair with fresh grilled veggies, delicious fruit or make tacos or salads, and voila. On average, there has been an astonishing 60 percent decline in the size of populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians in just over 40 years, according to the most recent World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Living Planet Report, and the top threat to species is human activity. Adjusting holiday traditions to be friendlier toward the planet -- as well as the people and animals who rely on a healthy environment to survive -- can be a meaningful way to spread goodwill during the season. Here are three ideas for doing so: Waste not Wasted food represents about 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and is a main contributor to deforestation and the depletion of global water sources. Shopping for foods grown and raised sustainably can reduce the footprint of your holiday menu. You can green your holidays further by reducing your plastic consumption. It’s pro-
jected that by 2050, the total amount of plastic waste in the oceans will weigh more than all fish, and 99 percent of seabirds will have ingested plastics. Shop with reusable tote bags and opt for gift wrap and décor made only from sustainable materials. Give gifts that give back When you make a donation this holiday season, consider giving gifts that help protect nature, such as those found on WWF’s online gift center, For animal lovers, WWF’s wildlife-themed gifts are a good choice. Symbolic species adoptions, are educational and fun. Americans motivated to improve holiday finances Americans are taking proactive steps to keep holiday spending in check and be financially ready for next year, according to an Experian national consumer survey. A majority of those surveyed (84 percent) say they’re motivated to improve their finances this holiday season, with 66 percent paying for gifts in cash and 62 percent planning to pay off debt. Almost half (46 percent) will try to improve their credit score before the start of the new decade. • Holiday shopping strains finances. Many Americans agree that holiday expenses affect their finances negatively (63 percent), and nearly two out of three feel stressed about their finances during the season. However, Americans plan to tackle these challenges with some smart approaches; many of those surveyed (65 percent) will set aside money for gifts, while 52 percent will tighten

their budgets to prepare for holiday shopping. Looking beyond gift giving, 42 percent will start financial planning to prepare for next year and beyond. Consum-
ers’ top New Year’s resolutions are saving more (49 percent) and improving their credit score (33 percent). • Credit as part of a holiday spending plan.
Nearly one in four consumers plans to introduce open a new credit card during the holidays, according to Experian. If this describes you, it’s important to go about it
carefully. “Debt you can’t repay will certainly bring down your holiday spirit,” says Rod Griffin, Experian’s director of consumer education. “There’s often the temptation to overspend, but the best gift you can give yourself is being financially smart. Make sure to create a budget and stick to it while using credit wisely. The key is strategic use of credit -whether that’s using a card that provides low interest, rewards points or cash back -- to improve the shopping experience and stretch your dollars.” Whether to get the best credit card for holiday shopping or to be prepared for future loan needs, Americans can now boost their credit score instantly by using Experian Boost, a free tool that allows anyone to add positive payment history for utility or telecom bills to their Experian credit report, possibly increasing their FICO Score 8 in

Sixty percent of survey respondents say they spend too much during the holiday season. In fact, despite being stressed about debt, they’ll still spend an average of $1,649 on gifts this year, compared to $945 in 2018, a whopping 75 percent more, according to Experian. Additionally, the lure of deals is hard to resist; one in five Americans surveyed would risk becoming a victim of identity theft for a good Cyber Monday deal, and 56 percent would rather get a 10 percent discount at a store than improve their credit score by 10 points.
