Pacific Power is committed to helping all of us bridge the educational gap between gas and electric cars as we drive into the future. To help with that, they are bringing two electric cars for attendees of “Sea Cruise” to take a drive around town, so we can gauge first-hand the difference between a gas and electric experience. We all know electric cars are quiet, but what are some of the other differences? You can find out on Saturday. Pacific Power will have a booth in the Marketplace area of the show, where you can arrange the test drive. ‘Sea Cruise’ rolling back into Crescent City

Classic cars rolling down the 3rd Street, visitors from all over the U.S. shopping downtown and sipping on local brews, hot rod fans comparing notes ... it’s time for Crescent City’s annual “Sea Cruise” extravaganza. The Northern Knights Classic Car Club is partnering with the Del Norte/Crescent City Chamber of Commerce to host the 28th-annual classic-car event downtown Oct 4-6. Northern Knights club president Jason Bartholomew said his favorite part is “just seeing all the different cars. Everybody’s got a different flavor with what they do to their cars: keep ‘em original, completely modify them in paint, rims, motor. There’s no two alike.” Registration begins at 10 Friday morning, Preregistration is $35 dollars, $40 for same-day signups. That afternoon, those who want to flash their fancy vehicles can join the Show And Shine from 4:00-6:00, followed by Blues and Cruise in the evening. Regular traffic will be restricted from 3rd Street so event participants can park their vehicles and visitors can admire them. Booths with local beers and food vendors will set up along 3rd Street so attendees can enjoy a beer and some eats while members of the show cruise from Front Street to Downtown.
Unlike previous years, anyone who wants to cruise their car without officially entering the show can. For $10, they can join the parade of cruising classics. In past years, 50 to 60 cars participated in
the sanctioned cruise. Before the sun is up Saturday, Bartholomew and Northern Knights members will begin to set up for the biggest day of the weekend - the car show day. Registered participants can arrive between 7:00 and 8:00 to park their cars. Shortly thereafter, the rubbernecking and judging will begin. Who are the judges? Anyone who has entered the competition – they just can’ vote on cars in their same category. Northern Knights also

judging. After the attendees have voted, winners will receive their awards at a 3 p.m. ceremony, followed by dinner and dancing hosted by the Emblem Club. The Del Norte Senior Center will finish the weekend by hosting its annual poker run Sunday from 9-10 a.m., followed by an afterparty. “Sea Cruise” is one of the largest events held in Crescent City, with some 350 participants and more than 2,000 guests annually. None of this fun would happen without the work of the Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Knights Classic Car Club. The Northern Knights is a small local car club of about 20 car-loving members who aim to offer car enthusiasts and residents a time to remember. “To see that full gamut in one park, with the ocean and the lighthouse in the background, I mean it’s just, it’s an amazing feat,”
Bartholomew said. “Proceeds from “Sea Cruise” benefit Crescent City youth. This past year, beneficiaries included Crescent City’s Little League baseball team. And a few weeks ago, club members attended a spaghetti feed and donated funds for a local teenager battling cancer. “All the money that we raise from ‘Sea Cruise’ goes back into the local kids’ community,” Bartholomew said. “You know, support local youth in any way we can.”

Last year’s Best in Show winner had the most to show off Coos Bay resident Craig Spotts is no stranger to winning top awards at car shows. The vehicle that took last year’s Best in Show at the 27th-annual “Sea Cruise” was his 1937 Ford two-door humpback. The tangelo pearl - not orange, Spotts insists - classic also won Best in Show in 2018 at events in Coos Bay and Winchester Bay, Oregon.
“It gets the People’s Choice award at numerous car shows. I think it’s the trailer, is what people love, along with the car,” Spotts said. A kitchen sink is just about the only fixture he doesn’t set up alongside his Ford. And he hauls behind it a bumper-car trailer, made in Indiana. “They didn’t make too many of them. Nobody’s seen one like it,” Spotts said. “I’ve tried to convince my wife to sit in the back during cruises and throw out candy.” Corinne, his wife of 25 years, may enjoy participating in car shows but she hasn’t agreed to go all in just yet. What she does do is contribute a scenic display that Spotts sets up at the shows alongside his classic car — an

The setup includes a table in the shape of their car, complete with an umbrella and place settings that match the Ford’s tangelo pearl color. “She’s the one who initially set up the picnic scene. I was all aboard,” said Spotts, “otherwise, I wouldn’t have it.” To acquire the 1937 Ford, Spotts sold off many of the other classic cars in his collection. They included what had been a regular at “Sea Cruise,” a 1956 Mercury. “Everybody remembers that car. It was persimmon and white,” Spotts said, another color close to orange. “It’s funny. People say, ‘He seems to like that color.’” Spotts is a member of the Over the Hill Gang
in Coos Bay, many of whose members participate in car shows. “I love going to car shows, seeing everybody’s talent,” he
said. “The cars are like pieces of artwork. Instead of seeing paintings, it’s automobiles. And this kind of art, you can drive.” Look for Spotts’ display along

When classic-car owners begin lining up their hot rods for the 28thannual “Sea Cruise” kickoff event - Show And Shine - Crescent City’s Downtown Divas will have lined up the rest of the festivities for their “Live From Downtown: It’s First Friday.” The two events will merge for one big evening Oct. 4 from 4-8:30 p.m. The classic cars will be on 3rd Street from K to H streets, while the First Friday events will be centered in the Tri Counties Bank parking lot at 936 3rd St. Downtown diva Connie McDonald, owner of the store Soul Feet, said visitors to the two events can enjoy the classic cars and the First Friday activities, which will include 12 artists, food trucks, gourmet desserts, three published authors, the Del Norte High School Booster Club, and jewelry makers.
“That includes Crescent City Rocks, one of our babies, because they started with us,” McDonald said of the divas’ efforts in promoting local businesses. “Owner Kathy Bower was one of the success stories for Crescent City for small businesses. Her products made it to Japan.” McDonald added that the Downtown Divas invite only those artists who make their own products, not something purchased from a third party and sold here. “We enjoy partnering with the Chamber and the car club for our October event. It’s more concentrated and we’re all together,” McDonald said. The Crescent City/Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Knights Car Club cosponsor “Sea Cruise.”

Diva Sheri Johnston, owner of Johnston’s Gift Garden Home, said the First Friday events usually have small acts at each street corner. But during “Sea Cruise,” she said, the entertainment will be on only one stage, in the Tri
Counties Bank parking lot. The opening act will be Stephanie La Torre and The Reverbs at 4 p.m. The Spence Brothers Blues Band takes over at 6 p.m. “It’s just a great time for
everyone downtown,” said Johnston, “with the cars showing up and everyone in and out of shops having a great time.” Diva Sydney Clinton, who owns Northcoast Health Screening, said there will be plenty of food, including Juanita’s tacos, tamales and tortas, Karmen Pearcey’s Sticks and Scones, Mambos, Dos Guerra’s Crescent Seafood and more.
At 6 p.m., activities transition from Show And Shine to Blues & Cruise (formerly Brews & Cruise). Participating classic-car owners will parade their vehicles from Front Street to other parts of downtown. “During all this time, visitors can enjoy music, artisans, and beer and wine from the best vantage point to watch the cruise,” said Clinton.

The Spence Brothers Blues Band will perform on a stage set up in the Tri County Bank parking lot, 936 3rd St. That allows room for the Show And Shine portion of “Sea Cruise,” where hot rods are displayed on 3rd
Street stretching from K to H streets. Those hot rods bring back good memories for Spence. “I learned to drive in a ‘49 Studebaker. When I was 13 or 14, my dad turned me loose in a parking lot, showing me the clutch and gas, and let me go in circles until I got it down,” he said. “But when it comes to real hot rods,” he said, “it’s gotta’ be a 1950 Ford or 1950
Mercury. Nothing is cooler. If I won a lot of money or hit the lottery, I’d get me a Mercury, turn it into limo black, and bling it out with a zebra-striped interior.” Based in Brookings-Harbor, Troy and Rodney Spence have been playing all styles of music together since 1981. Cruising for a poker game on last day of ‘Sea Cruise’ “Sea Cruise” would not be complete without the annual poker run Oct. 6. That Sunday morning, residents, visitors and “Sea Cruise” participants can enjoy a game of poker from 9:00-10:00, plus a scenic drive, games and an afterparty. “It’s a lot more than just a poker run,” said Rosalie Leaberry, who chairs the Del Norte Senior Center’s fundraising committee. “They can buy one poker hand for $5 and get a half-day of entertainment.” Put on by the senior center, the event’s proceeds will help fund the center’s programs for seniors
and limited-income individuals. “The senior center depends largely on federal funding for its programs, and because of the uncertainty of that in the current economy, we need to really increase that local funding,” Leaberry said. The poker run is not an actual run, it’s more of a cruise. Participants drive along a 25-mile stretch and make five stops, each one featuring card draws as well as other games. classic car, and you don’t have to be a member of a car club, to participate,” Leaberry said. Beginning at the Kid’s Town parking lot on Front Street at 9 a.m., participants can purchase poker hands at $5 each. Then, they drive along a scenic route,
stopping for a little competition along the way. The poker cruise ends at 10 a.m. at the senior center on Northcrest Drive, where attendees can enjoy a complimentary tri-tip lunch, music, raffle and silent auction. “We always have a lot of really
diverse prizes, including a lot of gift certificates,” said Leaberry The poker run has been part of the “Sea Cruise” event for several years. This is the fourth year the senior center has hosted the game. One of the functions the poker run supports is the center’s energy and weatherization program, which assists limited-income individuals and families with heating and weather services. In
the last fiscal year, the center was able to provide 918 households with heating assistance and 35 more households with weatherization services. The Del Norte Senior Center has served the county since 1976. It offers onsite dining and home delivery of meals every weekday for those ages 60 and older, and manages the Redwood Cove Senior Apartments
