Fix Up Your House Whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor, the coronavirus shutdown could be the perfect time to tackle those homeimprovement projects you’ve been dreaming about. Healthy people isolated at home during the pandemic have time on their hands to tackle jobs — whether big or small — that will make living at home more enjoyable. Now that government stimulus checks are arriving, there could be extra money available to work on them, too.

Hire a Pro In many areas, construction jobs are still allowed under lockdown restrictions. Check your local government websites to be sure. If they are allowed to work, and can do so while safely isolating themselves from potential infections, professional contractors and handymen can transform your home in a short amount of time. Keep in mind, the contractor should have proper licensing. Most states require all general and specialty contractors be licensed and registered in the state where they perform work. One of the most important parts of choosing a contractor is looking at their references. Talk to your friends, family, neighbors and the contractors themselves. The best home contractors will always have a great reputation with lots of happy customers. They’ll likely have

a list of clients you can call to ask about their work and perhaps even see it in person. Even better, try to get references from people you know and trust. If you’ve got a friend who had similar work done on their house, ask them what they thought about the contractor they hired. Some things to ask: • Did they complete the job on time and on budget? • Were they professional at all times? • Did they keep the work site tidy and clean up after themselves? • What was the quality of their work like? Can I see it? • Would you recommend them for another job?

By finding the right person or company to complete your project, you’ll be investing your stimulus check in a way that makes your living situation more enjoyable for years to come.

Do It Yourself While it’s best to leave big projects to the pros, many homeowners may have smaller fix-up projects that now is the perfect time to complete. If you’ve got spare time to spend on it, there are a lot of home-improvement projects that can make a big impact on the look and value of your home without spending a fortune. Flooring materials, for example, could be purchased with the stimulus

funds. If you know how to install it properly, or could learn by watching online tutorials, new flooring is a terrific bang-for-the-buck home project. The same thing goes for paint and tile work. Other options that could improve the value of your home include updating the kitchen and bathroom appearance, installing programmable thermostats that can save money on utility bills, or creating an inviting outdoor living space to enjoy with your friends once the pandemic threat has subsided. By preparing your home now for enjoyment in the future, you’ll be doing something practical that also lets you look forward to the happier, more socially connected times to come soon.

Mortgage Relief and COVID-19 Scams: What You Need To Know (StatePoint) Unfortunately, during times of hardship, families are often targeted by fraud artists attempting to take advantage of those needing assistance. The COVID-19 crisis is no exception, with many scammers pretending to extend a critical lifeline to struggling homeowners through so-called “foreclosure rescue fraud.” According to Freddie Mac, this scheme involves bad actors offering false promises of being able to save your home from foreclosure. Common elements of this fraud include the following: • Requiring you to sign over the title to your home. • Asking you to sign unfamiliar documents and/or share your personal information. • Charging you rent to stay in your home and/ or potentially promising that you can purchase your home back when your financial situation improves. Another common fraud involves a third party guaranteeing you a loan modification with a reduced

mortgage payment. Such scams may operate similarly as foreclosure rescue fraud, as fraudsters collect an upfront fee and promise to work with your loan servicer on your behalf.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

• Don’t disclose. Never provide your information via phone or internet until after you have verified the caller or company’s identity. • Be suspicious. If someone has contacted you asking for personal or sensitive information, do your homework to verify the validity of the request before providing any information. Contact your servicer (the company listed on your mortgage statement) and confirm that they called you asking for information. • Spot imposters. Scammers across the globe can make any name or number appear on your caller ID or email. Protect yourself from spoofing by letting calls go to voicemail first. If a call is important, the caller

will leave a message. If you do answer and it is a robocall, don’t press any numbers. Just hang up. • Report fraud. Freddie Mac will never reach out to offer a refinancing opportunity or new loan over the phone. If you have been contacted by someone claiming to represent Freddie Mac, you can report it by visiting sf.freddiemac.com/working-with-us/ fraud-prevention/feedback. While there are fraudsters out there offering false promises, know that there is real assistance on offer during this crisis, too. Contact your loan servicer to discuss your options. If Freddie Mac owns your mortgage and you are a homeowner unable to make you mortgage payments due to a decline in income resulting from COVID-19, you can learn more about available mortgage relief options by visiting MyHome. FreddieMac.com. Your family’s health is no doubt top-of-mind these days. However, it’s also important to remember that fraudsters are out in full-force, making your financial vigilance a crucial priority as well.

SERVING THE OREGON COAST & BEYOND

ERIN SKAAR FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER

Proven Community Leadership

I am a lifelong Oregonian raised in Maupin, a rural town where my family owned a small business dependent on tourism and fishing in a farm community. This gives me a first-hand understanding of the challenges we face in Tillamook County blending our strong farm and forest heritage with our expanding tourism market. As the Executive Director at Community Action Resource Enterprises (CARE) I have demonstrated my community leadership skill and ability to build partnerships and coalitions to address complex community issues. As the manager in a not for profit business I have a strong commitment to ensuring that public money is used wisely, and I look for efficiencies and ways to cut costs at all times. I look forward to bringing my experience and leadership to serve you as your next county commissioner.

5 Ways To Upgrade Your Home With New Tech (StatePoint) Upgrading your lifestyle doesn’t have to mean undergoing a major home renovation. By simply introducing a few technologies around the home, you can boost the style, efficiency and comfort of your living spaces. Consider these five ideas for five areas of your home: • The Hallway: Why display just one photo when you can rotate several images that include all your favorite people and moments? A digital picture frame allows you to do just that, with many models connecting to apps that allow you to directly share photos to the wall-mounted device, which means you don’t actually have to be at home to do some light redecorating. • The Home Theater: Still rocking a mercury bulb projector in your home theater? 5 Insta-Worthy Hacks To Get Your Home In Tip-Top Summer Shape (StatePoint) The weather is warming up which means you’re probably chipping away at your cleaning to-do list. Looking to have a little fun with your chores? Try these five unexpected shelf liner hacks around your home to protect against messes, enhance organization and add pops of color to lackluster spaces. 1. Liner in the laundry room. It never hurts to have a little extra storage in the laundry room. Cover the top of front-load machines with shelf liner for easy cleaning and to help keep items in place, then use the space to display your detergents and fabric softeners in decorative baskets or containers. 2. Spice up the pantry. It’s finally time to trade your mess of boxes, bags and random spices for those dry food canisters and pantry organizers you’ve been eyeing. Before arranging them on your shelves, put down a layer of liner to catch any crumbs or leaks. Kick things up a notch by choosing a printed liner to complement your kitchen décor. 3. Everything but the kitchen sink. The cabinets under your kitchen sink tend to be a catch-all for random cleaning products, tools and household supplies. But they can also be a hot spot for water damage, grime and leaks. Cover under-sink surfaces with shelf liner and organize your products in sleek containers to elevate this dreary space. 4. Fridge envy. Feeling inspired by pics of your favorite celeb’s perfectly stocked fridge on social media? Take a stab at recreating their masterpiece by lining up your produce, drinks and condiments by type and color. Even if you can’t keep it up all year, at least you’ll get

a great pic for the ‘Gram. Bonus Tip: A layer of shelf liner will help keep your groceries in place and make cleaning up any leaks or spills a breeze. You can even throw the liner in the washing machine and re-use it! 5. Dress up your closet. It’s the perfect time of year for a closet purge. After you’ve divvyed up your “donate” and “keep” piles, cover your closet shelves and dresser drawers with fabric top liner to protect clothes from snags, crease lines and discoloration. While you’re at it, apply leftover printed liner to the sides of your drawers for an easy, DIY upgrade. For additional shelf liner hacks and DIYs, visit duckbrand.com. Clearing the cobwebs and getting a fresh start this season? Use shelf liner around the house to add beauty and organization to your spaces.
