Hiker’s fall may lead to charges A

Gold Beach man faces criminal charges after falling into a creek bed and suffering a leg injury. According to a press release from Curry County Sheriff John Ward, the incident unfolded about 9:40 p.m. Sept. 3 when the sheriff’s office received a 911 call from Paul Heim, 30, who said he had fallen into a creek bed and might have broken his ankle. Heim said he was about two miles up Abe’s Creek behind a locked gate, which is about eight miles east of Gold Beach off North Bank Rogue River Road. Heim said his cell phone battery was about to expire and that he had called friends for help but they had been unable to locate him. The Curry County Sher-

Slam’n Salmon results now in T

he 2019 Slam’n Salmon Derby winners now have been announced, with Brett McBee taking top prize with a 20-pound salmon he landed Aug. 30. Daily winners in the derby also were recently announced. Friday’s catch included a 17-pound, 8-ounce fish caught by Rocky Gravel for first place, a 15-pound, 5-ounce fish caught by Bill Doty for second place, and a 12-pound, 13-ounce fish caught by Dave Groenebergh for third place. New seniors at sunrise

he Brookings-Harbor class of 2020 began their last, first day of school at about 6:45 a.m. Sept. 4. The class gathered at Sporthaven Beach to watch the sun rise over the Harbor Hills and to kick off their senior year collectively. That tradition has been going on for a decade or so, said Mia Weaver, the 2020 class president. “It is a great

bonding experience,” she said. As the class welcomed the new school year, members were keeping one of their own in their thoughts. Dylan Speir died Aug. 1, 2017 after falling from a seaside cliff while fishing. “After losing our son, Dylan Speir, three years ago,” said his mother, Brandy Speir, “I’m happy to still be surrounded by the kids I’ve watched grow up with him, to not only cheer them on and support them however we can, but to also be surrounded

by their love and kindness. “Parents were delighted to see so many of the seniors come out to celebrate. I hope they have the best last year of school, and I cannot wait to see the adults they become in the future.” This coming spring, the seniors will gather to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean in honor of their last day of high school, which, said Weaver, may well be be the last time they’re all together.

Tiny RV-park home sales grind to halt A

certain type of tiny RV-park home that’s increasingly dotting the landscape in recreational vehicle parks, including in Curry County, is stuck in limbo for both buyers and sellers. Homeowners can’t sell their homes, and would-be buyers are unable to move in to ones they’ve purchased. “The sales of park-model homes came to an eye-opening halt in June,” said ReMax broker Bret Curtis of Brookings. The transfer of those homes used to fall under the Oregon State Building Codes Division. Then, a bill passed by the Oregon Legislature, HB 2333, transferred responsibility to the Department of Motor Vehicles. But that doesn’t take effect until Jan. 1, 2020. The new seminar series, SWOCC & Beyond, will cover a variety of topics. The classes meet 2:30-4 p.m. every Thursday. The dog-behavior class began Sept. 5 and runs through Sept. 26.

Each week, different people from the community, from the shelter to veterinarians, will participate in the presentations. The seminar will discuss behavioral science and help train your dog based on its temperament and behavior. “This course is for dog trainers, behaviorists, and anyone who wants to learn about dogs and their behavior,” according to the course description. “After hearing concerns from the community about lack of programming relevant

to the community, the college decided to take action,” said Doug Bunn, executive dean at the Curry campus. “We can do things to bring more programs to the college.” The new Thursday series of classes will introduce people to “Massive Open Online Courses” by holding a new series of presentations each month. More than just policing the schools Linda Pinkham Staff Writer When students recently returned to Brookings schools, they found something their buildings hadn’t had for 15 years — a school resource officer. Brookings Police Officer Rob Johnson is in attendance at all three local public schools: Kalmiopsis Elementary School, Azalea Middle School and Brookings-Harbor High School. He’ll spend time in each of the schools daily, although, “Some schools may need me more than others. I won’t have a set schedule.” As for the school resource officer’s role, “It builds the relationships, builds the rapport,” Johnson said. “It works to build communications between the city, the officers, the school, the family, the parents, the students and the teachers. It’s kind of a cohesive glue between entities.” The presence of a school officer also helps the Brookings Police Department provide better service to the schools, he said. “Over the years, when the

school has called for service - whether it was for a student who was intoxicated or unruly, or having some issues when they called down here, it was the luck of the draw as to which patrol officer they got,” Johnson said. “Some officers have more experience with students, other officers have less. With a school resource officer, you have one officer who is assigned to the schools.” Johnson’s three major functions in the schools will be as an educator and guest speaker, an informal counselor and mentor, and a lawenforcement officer. Staff at each school will be able to call on Johnson to prepare a lesson plan and teach a class on a topic a teacher may request. As for mentoring, “I don’t have a degree in counseling,” Johnson said, but he can help in a variety of situations. “Some kids lose focus. Some of them lose hope. I will be able to mentor them and help them see that there are other things to look forward to and other opportunities for them. “If we have a student who isn’t doing well in school,

I can talk to them and find what their interests are, so I can help guide them to things they are interested in. Then, they can channel and focus that energy so they can be productive.” Johnson said he wants to be a role model and will offer encouragement, be “someone who they can talk to, and feel safe to do it. “And if they can express what they are feeling and have it be safe,” he said. “a lot of times they can work through their own issues. If you can get in a couple of words of encouragement and some redirection, a lot of kids can do really well if someone just shows they care.” While in the buildings, Johnson will wear his police uniform, complete with firearm. “It’s important to be prepared in case there is a critical incident,” he said. “He’s still a police officer,” added Brookings Police Chief Kelby McCrae. “He’s going to look just like we look. “Instead of having a more general purpose of serving everyone in the population - he’ll continue to do that -

students “to get with the program.” “I love those moments when you work with kids and good comes out of it,” he said.

As students step in for another year in the classrooms, regional police officers say they’ll be particularly diligent in enforcing school-zone traffic violations. The Brookings Police Department will increase its visibility during morning drop-off, at lunchtime

and at the end of each school day, said Sgt. Travis Wright. The department partners with the Kalmiopsis Elementary and Azalea Middle School crossing guards, who focus on student safety during drop-off and pick-up. “The biggest issues in past years have been with parents parking in the area of Ransom and Pioneer, bottlenecking that location. In addition, illegal stopping and standing in the roadway to drop off children and

young adults, and speeding in the school zone,” Wright said. In Oregon, fines for traffic violations in school zones double, so they can range from $225 to $875. “I want all drivers to understand that a school zone is designed to protect our kids, and the people who drop them off and pick them up,” said Crescent City Police Chief Ivan Minsal. “It’s not a speed zone or an expressway for them to get to work on time.

Dear Editor: I was born and raised in Brookings, growing up in the ‘50s and ‘60s. It was a time when artist Norman Rockwell captured the “Spirit of America” on every cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Let me share a few snapshots of some things I remember. It was a time when turning 5 years of age meant summertime swimming lessons in the Chetco River. A river that had plenty of water over my head. But this wasn’t the only safety lesson for me to learn at a young age. On my 7th birthday, I was given my first Daisy BB gun. It came with plenty of “strings attached.” I was reminded to handle my rifle safely, like my dad and big brother taught me, or else. Back then, it was just common sense to require responsibility and good judgment from a 7-year-old. Thanks to Mr. Harley Mitts, his dedication to Brookings youth and his Hunters Safety Course, many of us became Certified Safe Hunters by age 12. I shot my first buck at age 13 with a military 30-06, out hunting with Dad. The next year, hunting alone, I shot my first four-point using a 7 mm Mouser I purchased myself. I know, the times were different then. Pick-ups in town had Winchester 30-30s in the gun rack. Especially the loggers. The same was true for pick-ups in the high school parking lot. Few rigs were ever locked up, because without “permission to touch,” you kept your hands off someone else’s property. What is it we’ve lost in America since the 1950s? Mass shootings continue to rise, decade after decade, but are firearms the problem? Nothing about firearms themselves has changed. What seems to have culturally changed in recent decades is the number of tormented minds bent on violence. I wonder why they feel they have nothing to lose? Passing more gun laws won’t make a difference. Why? It has already been done. The states with the most-restrictive gun laws still lead the country in gun violence. We will eventually find

He had done pretty much the same for veterans last month. He calls it “river therapy.” Court is very thankful for veterans. As he tells us, he just missed the draft as it ended two months before he turned 18. He remembers some who didn’t return from Vietnam. Court’s local family spans his grandfather, father and uncles. Dear Editor: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that suicide was the leading cause of death for 15- to 54-year-old Oregonians in 2017. Suicide was the eighth-leading cause for all ages, and an Oregonian dies by suicide every 11 hours. Furthermore, more people in the U.S. died by suicide than in any previous year, including more Oregonians, more Oregon youth 15-24, and more people in Curry County. This situation is particularly concerning in rural Oregon, where there aren’t adequate behavioral health professionals. I’m a suicide prevention advocate from Brookings who runs an organization with the goal of achieving “Zero Attempts.” We can wait around for the powers to be to find the funding to make the necessary changes, or we can step up as individual citizens to do something about it. There are many little things individuals could do, including learning risk factors and warning signs; taking a one-hour online QPR course; asking “R U OK?” when checking in with a friend by phone or text to see how they’re doing; inviting a friend to meet for coffee or meal together; or sending a handwritten card to let someone know you’re thinking of them. I saw a 16-page, fourcolor newspaper insert called “Suicide Awareness and Prevention: Finding Hope” that the Grants Pass Daily Courier wrote, designed, produced and ran in newspapers in Jackson and Josephine counties last September during Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. I worked with publisher Travis Moore to make it more pertinent for Coos, Curry and Del Norte counties. I also wanted to open up the donor base to include small businesses, organizations and, most importantly, individual citizens to show that the entire village needs to

Dear Editor: I would like to provide clarification on two issues that were mentioned in your article, “A permanent fix for Highway 101 slide is now delayed” (Sept. 4). First, the project described in the article is not a “permanent fix” and will not prevent another slide from happening near Hooskanaden Creek. The project would simply return the highway to the condition it was in before the ground moved. Slides will continue to occur in this area and ODOT will continue to repair the road when they do. Second, we want to make clear that Tidewater Contractors made a good-faith effort to help us find a solution. We want to thank them for submitting a bid, reviewing the project and offering their expert opinion. After the slide occurred, ODOT’s intention was to return the road alignment to its original condition as soon as possible. Our staff followed an expedited process so that a project could bid this year. Unfortunately, the Aug. 13 bid date may have come too late in the season. This may explain why we only received one bid. When we reached out to other contractors to ask why they had not submitted bids, most mentioned the challenges of finding disposal sites and securing enough trucks to transport that much material in such a short timeframe. We have decided to take the feedback we received from Tidewater and other contractors, review the project plans and look for ways to improve the project, which will be postponed until next spring or summer. We would like to once again thank Tidewater for going above and beyond the call of duty this past winter in responding to the Hooskanaden slide and quickly re-opening the highway. Without their efforts, the highway would have been closed much

With the new school year just underway, some planners already are turning their attention to the Christmas season. Nature’s Coastal Holiday is beginning its 22nd year of organizing Brookings’ “Festival of Lights” in Azalea Park. This year’s show opens Nov. 29 and runs nightly 5-9 p.m. through Dec. 29, said Klaus Gielisch, Nature’s Coastal Holiday board president. He said the group is anticipating an even bigger event this year. “It’s official,” said Gielisch, “we are going to be well over 2 million lights. “Last year, we introduced our new dancing Mega Tree light show, which is synced to holiday music. This year, we have doubled the lights,

and added smaller trees and arches that encircle the Mega Tree and join in the light show. “What’s more,” said Gielisch, “we will be introducing our North Pole Penguin Village and many more displays.” He emphasized that an all-volunteer group spearheads the event. “We will be looking for everyone in our community to help string the lights in the bushes Nov. 2, rain or shine. We meet at the Kid’s Town parking area at 9 a.m.” Organizers said the event’s sponsorship letters will be going out this week to local businesses asking for their support. “Without our community’s backing, we could

not keep this going. Lights and supplies add up quickly,” said Gielisch. “With the addition of the Bankus Park area at 5th and Highway 101, we have our hands full getting everything lined up and will need every sponsor on board this year.” He said the Christmas Elves who previously had decorated the downtown area have decided to focus their efforts on the Christmas parade, handing over the downtown decorating to Nature’s Coastal Holiday. Last year, the group raised $40,000 from its Great Holiday Hoopla Giveaway Raffle, plus proceeds from the “Festival of Lights,” to help the City of Brookings with paving the lower parking lot

off of North Bank Road. “This project is still on our radar” said Klaus. “We are holding the funds in trust from last year while the city obtains grant funding for the additional amount, which is around $225,000. The engineered plans are drawn up and everything is ready to go as soon as the city gets a hold of the funds.” In 2018, he said, Nature’s Coastal Holiday donated more than $13,000 for lighting in the lower parking lot, in addition to a few lights at the parking lot across from St. Timothy’s Church. ark Allen English, passed away on July 11, 2019, in Winston, Oregon. His daughter Jessica had moved him and his wife Betty there in Sept. of 2018, to provide care for them. Betty preceded him in death on June 5, 2019. Mark had been a long time resident of Brookings. He was a captain of several fishing vessels, the last being the Miss Sarah. Mark and Betty worked as caretakers on Ron Fallerts ranch on the Chetco River until they

retired. Mark was known by all as an honest and hard working man with a wonderful sense of humor. Mark and Betty shared many adventures together and as soul mates they both passed peacefully at their new home in Winston, Oregon just five weeks and two days apart. Their families miss them so much but know they are together. A memorial was held for both Betty and Mark by their families in Roseburg, Oregon on July 20, 2019.

Yvette enjoyed a plethora of activities like reading mystery and crime novels, camping, gardening, scrapbooking, boating, bowling, and making cards and caps for kids. Among her accomplishments Yvette was the Secretary of Mesa Verde High School Music Boosters as well as a Girl Scout Troop leader, service unit manager, First Aider and Honorary Girl Scout for Life. Yvette served as a La Leche League Chapter President, then, a PTA Historian receiving an Honorary Service Award in 1982. Yvette will be remembered by her husband of 58 years, Larry, daughters Michelle (William) Gray, Denise (David) Danens, Dianne (Ron) Billington, brother Paul and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Eva and Adelard Gauvin and sister-in-law Dorothy. A Memorial Mass was held on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019 at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings, Oregon.

Staff Report Gold Beach artist Pat Renner will teach a free workshop, “Drawing Faces: A Step-by-Step Approach to Success,” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Curry Public Library in Gold Beach. Renner will teach a basic method that has been used for centuries to teach drawing, by breaking subjects down into basic shapes. “Lots of lines will be drawn, and many will be taken away, until the face is individualized,” Renner said. “Then, the hair will be added to the head and modeling begins.” During this stage, Renner will work from the same photographs as used by the participants. Locals gathered at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Easy Street in Brookings for the annual Back To School Tea Party offering handmade dresses to young children for back to school. “There were about 20 girls attending the event and they were able to pick out a dress to wear to school.” Jane Knox said. Knox is the ambassador for the Brookings Dress A Girl organization. “We are a dedicated group of women who get together the second Saturday of the month to sew and share supplies

and ideas,” Knox said. “Many of the women also sew at home for the girls. We have sent dresses to Africa, Mexico and Brazil.” Knox said invitations to the girls attending the affair went out last spring. “We sent out invitations with end of the year paperwork last spring, we put a notice in the newspaper and by word of mouth,” she said. “The girls brought friends or siblings with them. In our small town the word gets passed around. Many of the girls have been coming for several years.” Knox said while the girls who attended were

not involved in the sewing, they were invited to the tea party to celebrate the start of a new school year. According to Knox, her group plans to send 24 dresses to a children’s home in Brazil when they meet in September. “We also like to provide dresses for girls in our area,” she said. The event, held on Aug. 10, included lunch, several crafts, such as making hair bows, cup cake decorating, and each girl decorated a ujournal. Art that’s abstract, beachy, even mousey

The Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk will offer visitors all kinds of art, music and special events from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 14 right in downtown Brookings. Special events begin at 4:00 at the PBAA/Manley Art Center, with an interview of featured artist Georgia Cockerham. The gallery theme this month is “Fluid.” Then, it’s the Brian Scott Gallery at 4:45, where Judith Falconer will discuss how and why she produces her paintings based on birds and other creatures living in and around water. Before, during and after these two special events, Ambiance by the Sea will be celebrating a “Surf’s Up” theme with music, refreshments and beach-themed art by Dale Wells and others. And at the Chetco Community Public Library, artists Dusanka Kralj, Thomas Sheets and Phillip Wadsworth will exhibit their versions of “Abstraction,” while the library’s lobby showcase will display Carolyn Milliman’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse collection. Most sites will provide free refreshments and live music in various musical styles. There are no admission charges, no obligation to buy. Many of Brookings’ downtown merchants stay open and welcome visitors during the art walk.

LET GO AND LET GOD CAROLYN SELF

verwhelmed? Confused? Equipment breakdowns? Way too much going on? Decisions? Stuff everywhere? Too complicated? All of a sudden, I heard clear as a bell: “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” (Luke 18:27) Oh, you mean this isn’t all up to me? I’m not going to have to do it all? I don’t have to know how to do it? “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5,6) Somewhere, I heard how important it is to change that terminology of “to-do” list to “God’s to-do” list. Okay, dear Father/Mother, I’m ready to back off and turn to you. I’m learning that everything worth knowing and doing starts with prayer. On page 1 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, it says, “The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God - a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.” Putting all my challenges on God, the divine Mind, gives me such peace and assurance that whatever is necessary to do, to know, to respond with, will certainly be revealed and taken care of. And I can go about my day with joy and giving. It isn’t always up to me to know how to do something, but that God will provide a way, even sometimes someone could

show up at the right time who will help out. Now, God knows nothing about our challenges. His care is always here, always blessing, and it’s my job to recognize that I dwell in the atmosphere of harmony. When I do that consistently and “let go and let God,” then I see that no trial can affect my harmony, and then I recognize the proof of God’s care. Recently, things came up that had me start to worry. When I realized what was going on in my thoughts, I turned to Hymn 82 in the Christian Science Hymnal: “God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year …” I recognized that God truly is here working His purpose out, even when things seem wrong and difficult, and I looked for the good underneath that’s always there. It was very freeing. I felt the pressures leave, and eventually each of the problems just disappeared or were taken care of without stress. How do I get past the stress and worry? 1) turn to God first, knowing that He is all wisdom. 2) love my neighbor unselfishly. 3) recognize that creativity is a God-quality, in divine Mind. 4) change the idea of “time” in my thought, as Mary Baker Eddy wrote: “Organization and time have nothing to do with Life.” Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: page 249. In those acts of goodness, we are seeing men and women expressing their real, God-given nature. Where can we find more of this good news, news that doesn’t shy away from problems but lifts our view to help us make permanent progress towards more freedom in all aspects of our lives? “What we’re looking for,” says Patricia Woodard, a practitioner of Christian Science healing, “is a view that uplifts our thoughts, changing our perspective to one that makes a difference for the better, that heals. “To me, this is what Christian Science is about: Finding a spiritual perspective of God that reveals the goodness, wellness and freedom flowing from God every day, helping those take tangible and reliable shape in our lives and the lives of others. That’s the ultimate good news!” Woodard will give a talk, “Breaking News: Freedom Is Ours Now,” on Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Chetco Com-

munity Public Library, 405 Alder in Brookings. Her lecture will explore the practicality in today’s world of Christ Jesus’ life and works, as recorded in the Bible and as discussed in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy. “I’ll share the way Christian Science has brought healing to my own life,” says Woodard, “rescuing me from a troubling situation with my teenage daughter and freeing me from the effects of an accident. I’ll also give examples of how it has helped others from different walks of life.” Woodard says, “The common thread through these experiences is a clearer view of the reality of God’s good news, that God-derived freedom is inherently ours now, releasing us from fear and pain in our lives and causing us to soar!” For many years, Woodard has been a Christian Science practitioner, praying with people for divine help and healing. She loves to travel and has lived in many parts of the U.S. and twice in Brazil. Each new culture and environment have taught her more about God, universal Love, and how all people are made to reflect God’s goodness. More recently, Woodard has been active in taking the healing ministry to those in the prison system in Dallas, Texas, where she now resides. She has also given her talk in many prisons around the country, including in Oregon.
