I’d be remiss if I didn’t address the COVID-19 pandemic that we find ourselves in this year. There is a lot of scrutiny around every aspect of doing business right now. From mask enforcement, to social distancing, to the number of customers that we can have in our businesses at one time. None of this is easy, but rest assured we are doing everything in our power to keep our visitors and locals safe and healthy. It will take all of us doing our part to “Keep the County Open” and continue to give our businesses the ability to serve the wonderful people who visit and live in Lincoln City.

xplore Lincoln City’s current focus is teaching guests how to safely and responsibly enjoy our coastal town. We encourage them to wear masks, social distance, enjoy uncrowded outdoor activities and observe the rules we have in place. We want them to be courteous and smart. We are helping create and promote safe activities, like the Bijou’s drive-in movie experience and the 6
Secret Take-Out Menu restaurant promotion. We’re being proactive with a phased recovery communications plan, giving Lincoln City the ability to move quickly when the time is right to invite guests to visit again. We are continuing to use public relations efforts to showcase our resilient and innovative business community on television, radio and print. Our city is full of entrepreneurs who
have proven to be both creative and compassionate. We are working to give them recognition, giving people a glimpse of our city’s heart and soul. Once we are past the pandemic, we’ll get back to inviting the world to come experience our town. Until then, though, we’ll be working hard to make sure that those people who do visit are safe and responsible while they are here.

It is our pleasure to introduce you to the growing number of trails in Lincoln City. Under the guidance of our City Council and Parks and Recreation Dept, we are in a time of very active trail building and repair. We hope you enjoy your experience in our open spaces. The Agnes Creek area underwent light touch logging in 2013 and the Spyglass Ridge area was logged in 2016. Both will see new undergrowth as the years pass due to increased sunlight reaching through the canopy. Please come back often to see the changes.

Spring Lake trails include short steep sections and several rolling sections. A little bit of trail for everyone. The trail on the far west side is wheelchair accessible on a paved surface. SE S Regatta trails are rolling trails that most should be able to handle, but beware of tree roots. 20

Welcome to Lincoln County I grew up in Lincoln County as the daughter of a commercial fishermen. I left for college and returned to Lincoln County for a career in marine science. I worked in that field for 16 years before taking office as a Lincoln County Commissioner. I grew up here, I returned here, and I raise my family here. This place has my heart. It’s beautiful, unique, rugged, and has that thing that you can just never quite put your finger on, some might call that magic. I am completely in love with this place and the people that live here. For those of you thinking about moving here, below are some of my favorite things about living here. The food! Growing up in a commercial fishing family, I always had access to fresh seafood. So much so that when I was in the 4th grade, my mom packed fresh crab in my lunch with a crab cracker and a container of seafood sauce. I cried because I wanted the hot lunch like my friends were having. My teacher took my crab and gave me the $1.50 for a hot lunch. While I may not have appreciated it as a kid, now I can say that I am a serious seafood snob and being a seafood snob is easy in this place. You can buy fish off the docks in Newport or from many retail seafood shops in Lincoln County. You can also learn to harvest your own seafood, such as digging clams, catching Dungeness crabs, or fishing. Catching fall chinook is absolutely one of my favorite things to do
here. Beyond seafood, you can learn to harvest other wild foods, like berries and mushrooms, though learning from an expert is needed so you avoid the poisonous ones. My big tip for people new to the Oregon coast, buy a freezer, so you can stock it up with amazing food. The outdoors! This place is beautiful and there is a ton of things to do outside. Lincoln County has several amazing coastal hikes and trails. There are rivers and lakes to kayak and paddleboard. Then there are the beaches! Miles and miles of beaches to walk, as well as waves to surf and rocky intertidal areas to explore. Get your outside on! My big tip for new residents, invest in good rain gear, so you can enjoy that walk on the beach or other outside activities when the weather is not ideal. The people! I get a little teary eyed when I talk about the people that live here. We have a great community that is heavily connected to the wellbeing of this place. Just about everyone I know gives back to their community in some way. There are many amazing non-profits in this county that provide needed and desired services to residents and visitors. Many of these organizations need volunteers to help fulfill their mission. Volunteering is a great way to both give back to your community but also for you to meet new people and feel more connected to your new home.

There are things here that are hard, like trying to figure out how exactly rain is getting into your rain jacket, when you have it secured fastened with an air tight seal around your face, and were only dashing from the parking lot to grocery store entrance and somehow have managed to get rain into your rain jacket and down the entire front of your shirt. Though with time, those things find a way to be humorous. They’re just par for the course in living in such a beautiful place. For those of you contemplating moving here, reach out to others who currently live here, talk to the chamber who is not only a great source of information on relocating but can also act as the “friend that lives here” if you don’t have one of your own. The Mills family bought the South store in Taft in 1972 and slowly expanded it by buying the buildings adjacent. Later, in the 1980s, they added the paint store, which was across the street, and was merged with the South store in 2018. Roughly at the same time in the 1980s, Roger Mills with his son, Ty Mills, added the North store and it has steadily grown ever since. Recently, the Chambers family purchased Mills Ace Hardware from the Mills family in June of this year. Three members of the Chambers family are now owners in the business. 34

Family-owned Gerber Tire offers quality service for over 40 years “My dad is still working,” Perry said. “He runs our trailer and truck bed division that we started about 25 years ago.” The family runs their Tire and Service Center at 1605 SW Hwy 101 in Lincoln City, and their Gerber Trailer Sales at 13000 S Pacific Hwy W in Monmouth. t’s a consumer’s worst fear: taking your car in for a tune-up and new tires and overpaying for the service. But never at Gerber Tire, that’s something they pride themselves on. For over 40 years, Gerber Tire has been serving the Lincoln City community with professionalism, expertise, and a family-oriented mindset in their tire and service business. “It’s very local,” Perry Gerber, Gerber Tire Corporate Secretary said. “It runs very un-corporate.” Perry’s father Jim Gerber started the business in 1980 and grew it into a four-store chain. Since that time, three of the locations have been sold off, but Gerber Tire is still family-run. 36
“There’s nobody at the top who’s collecting money for doing nothing,” Perry said of their success over the years. “There’s not a super high dollar guy who’s trying to suck the life out of it.” Staffing nine employees, Gerber Tire offer tires, wheels, undercar parts and service, brakes, shocks, alignments, batteries, starter, and a full service lube and oil station. “We’re also the biggest ‘Interstate’ dealer on the Oregon Coast and offer a lot of trailer repair,” said Perry. The Gerber family believes, and holds firm, to fixing things the right way with quality. “We think we try harder to make people happy,” said Perry. “I think we use better parts in most cases. Some shops use the cheaper parts and charge the premium price. We just use the premium parts.”
Gerber Tire doesn’t settle for cheap or inferior service. So instead of charging a flat rate price for work done in their shop, they pay their crew by the hour. Customers walk away pleased when service is delivered quickly and for a fair price. “Come check out us. Even though we only use premium parts, compared to the prices I’ve seen, we are competitive in every way,” Perry said. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gerber Tire has also stepped up their safety measures. “Nothing is reused, ever,” Perry explained. “So, every time a guy gets in a car, he has to have a brand new set of gloves, brand new steering wheel cover, brand new seat covers, brand new floor mats. We’re really taking care to make sure this is working good.” The service center is once again fully staffed (after slowing a bit during the state-wide quarantine mandate) and can get vehicles in and out quickly. “We’re basically instant service again,” said Perry. This year is a unique one for LCSD, our staff, families, and students. The Oregon Department of Education has outlined the models we can use for re-opening. At this time of this printing, we are going with the hybrid model since this allows for in-person instruction at least 2 days per week for our students and partnering with parents/guardians for the other three days of distance learning. Our community is resilient and we have incredible staff who want to do what is best for our students. Lincoln County School District has set a vision of “Every Child, Every Day, Future Ready”. implemented across the district last year. Next year, we will be adopting a brand new Math curriculum. We are part of the Oregon Coast STEM Hub which stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math. We are connecting our beautiful natural resources with our science and language arts curriculum.
