PARKS & RECREATION STAFF
W
ow, what a great summer we had! The Lincoln City community stayed busy with our Parks & Recreation Department , hosting multiple special events like Ocean’s Edge 5K/10K, Movie’s in the Park, and National Night Out. The Parks crew worked diligently to keep our parks, open spaces and beach accesses clean and maintained. They built a new park space in front of the Community Center, which offers picnic seating and cornhole boards – and installed new outdoor musical instruments at Regatta Park. Thanks to
the Rotary Club of Lincoln City for the musical instrument donation! We are excited to move into the Fall season and have some BIG news: Thanks to City Council, our youth sports leagues are FREE this year! Our Fall leagues include soccer, volleyball, and cross country. Additionally, we are bringing back a full schedule of swim lessons and a live aquatic instructor every day in the pool for classes including Aqua Rhythms, Aqua Deep, and a new class this fall, Aqua Strength. We’re also offering additional dry land classes – Strength
& Balance as well as Body Boot Camp. We encourage all of our All-Access pass holders to come and be active in our pool, fitness center, indoor track, gymnasium, and all of our fitness offerings. Thank you for being a part of our growing community and having fun with us! Be sure to Swim, Lift, Run, & Play your way to a healthy lifestyle. Bordering NE 14th St and NE Port Ave this Open Space has a little bit of trail for everyone; short steep and rolling sections. The trail next to the parking at NE Port Ave is wheelchair accessible on a paved surface.
Lincoln City Walks! Did you know a group of dedicated walkers hit the trails in and around Lincoln City every Friday morning? Anyone is welcome to join the group for fun, fitness and exploration! The walks are generally one-half to two miles in length. On the first Friday of the month, “Long Friday,” the walkers travel out of the area for special adventures. The Lincoln City Walkers meet rain or shine at 10 a.m. every Friday in the parking lot behind the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Hwy. 101, and then they car pool to different trails. Following the walk, the walkers meet for a social hour at a nearby coffee shop or restaurant. Be sure to dress for the weather (layers recommended!), wear good walking shoes, bring plenty of water, and don’t forget your walking sticks or pole. The scheduled walk may be changed depending on weather and the level of participating walkers. Reservations are not needed. Just show up! For more information, stop by the Cultural Center for a Lincoln City Walkers monthly brochure or call Parks & Recreation at 541-994-2131.
Family Gardening Learn how to make sauerkraut! Join Volunteer, Greg Robertson, to harvest cabbage from the Taft Community Garden and then see the steps in making sauerkraut. Details will be posted on the Parks & Recreation Facebook page mid-October. Garden beds are available each season at the Oceanlake and Taft Community Gardens. Many crops grow year round including broccoli and kale. Nothing better than picking fresh sugar snap peas right off the vine! Even sunflowers love the Coast. PARKS AND OPEN SPACES New at Regatta Park: Music in the Parks! Thank you, Rotary.
Canine Compadres Hikes Lincoln City’s many Open Spaces are filled with fauna and are fun to explore, especially if you are with a four-legged friend. If you haven’t taken advantage of all the nature we have right here within the city limits because you weren’t aware of them, are worried you’ll get lost in them, or just don’t want to go out there alone we’ve got a solution for you! The new Canine Compadres hiking group will meet at a different Open Space each week for a moderate 2-3 mile hike. Pace will be determined by the group and no one will be left behind. The group will convene after the hike for refreshments at one of the dog-friendly establishments, depending on the location of the hike. All dogs must be on a leash, even if your dog is the very best dog in the world. This experience is brought to you by Parks & Rec and Volunteer, Gretchen. For more information about the next Canine Compadres hike, follow the Lincoln City Parks & Recreation Facebook page or call LoRee at 541-996-1248.
Musical instruments are now ready for play next to the playgrounds and the Morgan Family stage. This musical addition was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lincoln City, which raised over $16,000 to purchase the musical instruments. Parks Maintenance chipped in by assembling and installing the pieces. An all-around great community partnership! As best said by Barbe Jenkins-Gibson (longtime Rotary member and originator of idea): “Members of the Rotary Club of Lincoln City recognize the great benefit of music in all lives. With this Music in the Parks project, our goal is to make musical instruments free and always accessible to both local residents and visitors. We hope they are played, respected, and enjoyed for many, many years.” Now, let’s make music together!
