DISASTER PREPAREDNESS GUIDE The City of Lincoln City is continually improving our ability to respond to and recover from natural disasters. What can you do to help us help you? Your responsibility is to prepare yourself and your family to survive until the City can respond. Take the time to learn about the hazards we face along the coast and elsewhere (places where you may travel). Prepare yourself and your family by creating a plan along with emergency “Go Kits” and “Stay Kits.” Some of the hazards you will face at some time along the Coast are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Damaging wind storms Flooding Fires (home, forest or urban) Landslides Earthquakes and tsunamis Power outages caused by any or all of the above
Your plan should include all of the hazards listed above; plan for sheltering in place or evacuating to a shelter. Remember to plan for your pets also, and sign up for Everbridge Citizen Alert notification at http://www. lincolncountysheriff.net/
•
There are two types of tsunamis and warnings: distant and local. Sirens will sound a warning for a distant tsunami, and an earthquake lasting several minutes will be the warning for a local tsunami (remember to Drop, Cover and Hold until the shaking stops.)
•
Have enough water, food and medications for your family and pets. You should plan for at least a week supply. Have a battery operated or hand crank emergency radio with USB port for charging cell phones, as well as a NOAA weather alert radio. Tune to local radio station KBCH 1400 AM or Newport KYTE 102.7 FM.
•
Keep your gas tank at least half full and an emergency kit in your vehicle.
•
Have a “Go Kit” at home and work, and a “Stay Kit” for sheltering in place.
Your plan should address the following items: •
Who is your family emergency contact? (out of area or out of state)
•
Where should your family meet?
•
How will you contact each other?
•
What about your pets?
•
When should you turn off the utilities?
•
Know where you live and work in regards to the updated tsunami inundation maps. They can be found at City Hall, the Community Center, Driftwood Public Library, Chamber of Commerce or the Cultural Center.
For more information on how to create your plan or to build your “kits” contact Mark Nicholson, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator at 541-557-1127 and follow us on our Facebook page: Lincoln City Emergency Preparedness and Outreach or on Twitter @ CofLCEMOutreach
