Dale Dixon, Depoe Bay Resident For over 20 years, Depoe Bay resident, Dale Dixon, has been enjoying his local catch off the rocks in Depoe Bay. Boiler Bay State Park is his favorite perch high above the sea. There are a plethora of species in the waters below and pictured is a young Sea Bass that was given back to the waters. He often enjoys Ling Cod, Perch and Sea Bass along with other types of fish. We do not recommend taking on this trek without an experienced guide and all of the applicable equipment and licenses. Check local bait and tackle shops for pointers and tips.

Things To Do: Marine Garden at Otter Rock Located to the north of Devil’s Punchbowl in Otter Rock, The Marine Garden at Otter Rock can be accessed by a short trail from the Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area parking lot at C Avenue and 3rd Street. This is a popular recreation area complete with intertidal habitat, seabird colonies and frequent sightings of Harbor Seals who haul-out on nearby rocks. At extremely low tides you can get a look into Devil’s Punchbowl from the rocky intertidal area. Otter Rock

Otter Rock is a small community approximately seven miles north of Newport, on the Oregon Coast. Nestled next to Depoe Bay, its semi-sheltered beaches are known for their idyllic summer conditions and dramatic winter storms. The community derives its name from a rock off its coastline that was once a haven for otters. Today, the offshore rocks are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and serve as a home for a variety of marine birds, including the endangered brown pelican, seagulls, cormorants and common murres. Although the rocks are off limits to humans, the waters around the rocks are a favorite location for whitewater kayakers. Kayakers should keep in mind however, that the surf can be rough and unpredictable in this area, especially during storm action. Known by some as the “Waikiki of Oregon,” Otter Rock’s history as a surfing destination is legendary. It is considered a favorite place for surfers of all levels, and has several surf shops to prove it. It is known for its long boarding competitions and attracts surfers from around the world. The residential community at Otter Rock has several restaurants and a winery that is open throughout the year. Accommodations include vacation homes, inns and motels, both in Otter Rock and nearby. There are several state parks to visit in the Otter Rock area, including Devil’s Punchbowl, which is known for its unusual geology and impressive surf action. The park is a favorite location for storm watching in the winter as well as hiking and picnicking in the summer. Beverly Beach State Park, about 1 mile south of Otter Rock, offers full RV hookups and tent sites, and an enchanting view of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Discovery 2020

SUP Stand Up Paddling

It’s quick and easy to learn the basic SUPing skill, allowing you to be up and paddling in no time. Whatever your age, gender or previous water-sport experience, you can do it. There are many places on the Oregon Coast which offer SUP, surf and kayak lessons and rentals. You choose how hard you want to paddle: it is like going for a slow walk, a fast walk, a jog, a run or even a sprint. During colder months it is a good idea to wear a wet suit just in case you go overboard. Wherever there is water, you can explore places that most don’t get to see. Standing up on the water gives you an amazing new perspective on the uniqueness of Lincoln County’s waterways. You can even sit down if you want and relax or fish from your boat. Most lakes and rivers are a great place to paddle. Some local favorites are Devil’s Lake, Siletz River, Yaquina Bay, Alsea River, and of course, the ocean for very experienced Stand Up Paddlers. Most county and State Parks have boat launches. When paddling, remember that you’ll have to get back to your vehicle. Bringing a friend along is fun and you can park one vehicle down river to pull out your boat without trying to fight back up stream. All seasons have opportunities to paddle. Flat, calm water is the easiest to learn on. You’ll have to be diligent when checking the tides and wind conditions as well. (See page 18). Make sure you heed the requirements for PFDs (Personal Flotation Device or life vest) and check the size requirements for your boat if you need to have a permit. These are just the first steps for your safety. When you’ve gotten your sea legs and after quite a few calm water trips, you may feel you’re ready to launch into the Pacific. Refer to any local surf or outdoor shop for more insight on destinations and warnings. You’ll learn to stand on water, enjoy the outdoors and get some great exercise without knowing it because you are having so much fun.

This year’s bicycle race is May 5th and starts from the Waldport Community Center There are two routes through mostly Forest Service property, one is 61.2 miles long and the other is 38.2 miles long. In the bustling town of Yachats, nestled amongst a chain of shops is the Luna Sea Fish House. At first glance you’ll notice this fish market turned restaurant has the friendliest staff in town. When you take a moment to enjoy some fresh caught fish & chips you’ll quickly learn where the seafood comes from. It is easy to assume that a fish market will boast locally caught fare. However, Luna Sea Fish Monger actually catches this bounty himself on his commercial fishing boat….a true Sea to Table experience. If you get the chance to meet owner Richard Anthony, you will be surprised at his endless level of hospitality and knowledge. When you get to chat with him you learn more and more…. small town folks are like an open book! He, his brother and a deckhand make up his crew. They fish for salmon, crab and halibut mostly but he never met a sea bass he didn’t like. The pride Robert has for his craft and his eatery are rarely matched. What began over 26 years ago as a small fishing operation has evolved into quite the social gathering place. His idea to open a fish counter became a restaurant and a local place for music on weekdays and weekends. Taking full advantage of his outdoor space was easy. He built it, and they all come.
