Greetings Former and Potential Parade Participants:

2022 Kiwanis Community Parade “Coming Back Together 2022” is the theme of the annual St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade to be held in June. The popular event that attracts thousands to the city has been absent for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the parade returns June 18. The Chronicle is proud to be the Kiwanis Community Parade chief media sponsor. In the following special presentation, the Kiwanis have provided detailed information for anyone wishing to register as a participant, the parade route map and various articles highlighting the Grand Marshal and other participants. The parade registration and staging begins at 9 a.m. June 18 at Emmert Motors, 2175 Columbia Boulevard. Participants are staged on the surrounding blocks off of Columbia Boulevard. Judging starts at 11 a.m. and the parade starts at 12 p.m. We encourage you to join the celebration as a parade participant or as a spectator and show your support for the Kiwanis and for our community. The St. Helens Kiwanis have two active groups who are dedicated to serving the youth of our community. Kiwanis Day Breakers and St. Helens “Noon Club”, we are the “Noon Club”. 2022 parade theme is: “Coming Back Together” The Grand Marshalls: Henry Heimuller – Columbia County Commissioner Parade registration: 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Parade judging: 11:00 a.m. Parade begins: 12:00 p.m. We encourage all parade participants to pre-register. If you plan on being in the parade, please fill out the enclosed registration form. It will expedite your registration on parade day. The official registration site is located in its traditional location at Emmert Motors (thank you Emmert Motors!), across from the South County Chamber of Commerce at 2194 Columbia Boulevard. There is no charge to participate in the parade, however, we are seeking volunteers for day of parade. Please let us know if you intend to participate. Kiwanis is “Dedicated to Improving the World,” one child, one community at a time. Chartered October 28,1926, the St. Helens Kiwanis has two groups, the “Noon Club” and “Daybreakers.” The Noon Club is excited to announce meetings are back in-person! Meetings are on the first and third Friday of the month from noon to 1 p.m., held at St. Helens Elks Lodge located at 350 Beldon Rd, St. Helens, OR 97051. Kiwanis Noon Club welcomes visitors to see

what Kiwanians do! Take this noon time to learn about organizations, businesses, people, history, and what is going on in our community from Kiwanis’s guest speakers. Take an hour for camaraderie and even a joke or two! The Kiwanis Noon Club Local Activities include: the St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade; Salvation Army Bell Ringing, established in 1915; and Holiday Hope

held at Columbia County Fairgrounds, donating food and toys to over 300 families in our community. Kiwanis Noon Club awards scholarships to St. Helens High School and Columbia County Educational Campus, annually gifting local elementary children with their very own book program in collaboration with Powell’s Books; parking for Columbia County Rodeo and Fair; and Halloween-

town activities during the whole month of October. The Daybreakers Club was established in 1988 to accommodate people with an early morning meeting time to be able to participate in Kiwanis. Daybreakers’ past local activities have included installing play equipment at high school daycares, providing a rest stop for the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Race, holding a dance for learning-impaired disabled citizens, and raising funds for “Pennies for Tots.” The Daybreakers sponsor the Annual Children’s Fair featuring organizations who

serve children and families. This event has taken place for 27 years at St. Helens High School with hundreds of adults and children attending. Like many events due to the pandemic, the event has not taken place in the last two years. It is not known at this time if the Children’s Fair will take place in 2022. The St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade is unique. This parade doesn’t depend on a holiday to support it. It is all about the community itself: bringing us all together, showing off what we do, what we stand for, why we live here, and what we are proud of. The parade itself offers an opportunity for people to have an idea, organization, be creative, set a goal, and make something from concept to completion. Who hasn’t experienced the thrill of standing in a crowd of people and listening to the approaching sounds of a marching band, horses, sirens, custom car engines revving, and the clowns stirring the children to laughter? You get to see and feel the excitement of fire trucks and police cars when they are not on the way to an emergency, admire the shiny red paint and catch a glimpse of the everyday heroes who drive and ride on them. You might even want to enter the parade to let the community know about you, your hobbies, your business, and the things you care about. Our theme “Coming Back Together 2022” is to remember and celebrate what we have in common as a community after being without a parade for two long years. There is no cost to enter the parade!

KOHI to broadcast Parade live Did you know if you are not able to physically be at St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade, that KOHI AM Radio with Marty Rowe will be there broadcasting live! Marty is stationed right in front of Richardson’s Furniture at 2015 Columbia Boulevard along the parade route. With Marty’s highenergy enthusiasm relaying across the air waves, listeners will be delighted with his detailed commentary on the parade entries as they pass by. Marty purchased KOHI AM Radio Station in 2004 and is proud to serve people via radio broadcasting. KOHI AM is a source of keeping a connection for people that are out of town, in nursing homes, or for whatever reason may not be physically able to venture out. They can tune into KOHI AM Radio and be informed of news and local events and entertained through talk commentary. Marty states he can broadcast from anywhere on the planet!

At the last St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade in 2019, Marty was the recipient of a Random Act of Kindness while broadcasting. A couple of youngsters who had been gathering up candy from the passing parade came to Marty as he was broadcasting. They thought he needed some Tootsie Rolls too, and the two happily shared with him. The youngster’s Act of Kindness made for a memorable moment for Marty.

Grand Marshal Columbia County Commissioner Henry Heimuller From Henry

St. Helens Kiwanis is proud to announce this year’s Grand Marshal, Columbia County Commissioner Henry Heimuller! If one has lived here for any amount of time, one most likely will have seen Henry in local county parades driving one of his tractors towing a parade float or towing a trailer for an event that offers a hayride, and so generously offering his tractors at events to share with the public. Having the pleasure of asking Henry if he will bring a tractor to an event, his upbeat response was yes, how many tractors would you like! Henry is a community builder that makes him the person we need as Grand Marshal for St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade “Coming Back Together 2022!” There is more one needs to know about Grand Marshal Henry Heimuller, as Henry serves as one of our Columbia County Commissioners. Henry Heimuller is a lifelong resident of Columbia County whose family can trace its county roots to the 1880s. Prior to being elected

commissioner, Heimuller served as the Transit Coordinator for CC Rider, the county’s transit service. Heimuller is a trained paramedic who worked in the field for 29 years. In the past 20 years, his public sector and non-profit experience has also included serving on the boards of the Columbia 911 Communica-

tions District, the Northwest Oregon Housing Authority, the Northwest Ride Center, the Community Action Team and the RSVP Advisory Council. He also was an active member of the Columbia County Fair Board and the County’s Citizens Transit Advisory Committee. Among his areas of focus on the Board of Commis-

sioners are transportation, health and human services, and economic development. He serves as chair on the state’s Northwest Area Commission on Transportation, ODOT’s Public Transportation Advisory Committee and is chair of the Columbia Pacific Economic Development District. Active in the Oregon

Association of Counties, Heimuller serves on the Legislative Committee and is co-chair of the Health and Human Services Committee. AOC, the statewide organization representing Oregon’s 36 counties, providing services and functions that support the work of Oregon counties. Heimuller also is active in the National Association of Counties, where he serves on the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee. Heimuller graduated from Scappoose High school and earned a Paramedic Certificate through WFS-EMS from Portland Community College. He is a graduate of OSU’s County College and Willamette University’s Transit Management program. Heimuller also is a member of several local service organizations including Kiwanis Club of St. Helens, the Elks Club (BPOE 1999), the St. Helens and Rainier Masonic Lodges, the Columbia County Shrine Club and the Warren Grange, among several others. Heimuller is married to his wife Pam and they have one daughter, Mikela.

Besides a lifetime of participation as a spectator of the PortO-Fun parade, my actual involvement in helping to organize the parade began in 1979 when I became a member of the St. Helens Jaycees, who at that time organized the St. Helens Port-OFun celebration which included the parade, carnival, beer garden, concerts, queen coronation and pageant, among many other activities spanning 3 1/2 days the third weekend of June each year. For two or three of my years as a Jaycee, I was the parade chairman. Over the course of many years (decades now…), I have provided and driven tractors and trailers that have been converted into floats for the Columbia County Dairy Women, The Oregon State Dairy Princess Ambassador, Columbia County Fair Board, RSVP My Fair Lady Court, Warren Grange, Oregon Performing Arts Studio (OPAS), St. Helens Synchronized Swimming Team, and St. Helens Masonic Family, among others.

In the early years the city celebration was called St. Hellions Days and the mascot was a little devil. A lot of people didn’t like that though and it didn’t last too long! Queen Sadie Bateman and Princess Sophie Parrott, along with the 2022 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court, travel Oregon and Washington representing the 2022 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo. They invite folks to the fair and rodeo while spreading the word about the sport of rodeo and the country way of life. The Court lends a helping hand at various events around Columbia County, such as the Megga Egga Easter Egg Hunt, the Columbia County Fair Plant Sale, and the Vernonia Friendship Jamboree Logging Show, to name a few. They participate in all the county parades, including the upcoming St. Helens Kiwanis Community Parade on Saturday, June 18. Queen Sadie and Princess Sophie are back in the saddle again and would like to invite everyone to the 2022 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo July 20-24 at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. Yee-haw!

A very important part of our community is the group My Fair Ladies! The My Fair Lady Pageant originated in 1989.

The court is made up of outstanding senior ladies that volunteer in the five main cities of Columbia County.

The 2022 court will be selected during this summer’s Columbia County Fair and Rodeo in St. Helens.

A marching band known for its high energy and flair will bring their eclectic sounds to the St. Helens Kiwanis Parade on Saturday, June 18. The Beat Goes On is an international award-winning all-adult marching band, committed to delighting Northwest and National audiences, according to their website. Founded in October 2011, The Beat Goes On performers are renowned for their upbeat attitudes, feel-good musical selections, and emphasis on audience interaction.

The Beat Goes On is an international award-winning all-adult marching band committed to delighting Northwest and National audiences while reliving the best parts of the marching band experiences we fondly remember and creating indelible memories. Not many groups have performed in the Netherlands at a 25 mile floral parade and 18th century castle, alongside Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower, on the floor of the Oregon House of Representatives, aboard a Caribbean cruise ship, atop the Great Wall of China, and down the street in Multnomah Village!

Founded in October 2011, the band is Shanghai Tourism Festival, 2014 renowned for its upbeat attitude, feel-good musical selections, and emphasis on audience interaction. Though its musical tastes are eclectic, TBGO features a high-energy, brassy, rock and roll style – we may be a marching band, but we're more likely to play Bruno Mars than John Philip Sousa! Our current show is still heavily rooted in rock and roll favorites, but we also play patriotic tunes, funk, jazz, soul, a polka or two, and yep, even a couple of marches.

At our first parade meeting, we talked about having a logo for our “Coming Back Together 2022” theme and we wanted the past to be part of our coming back together, so

we thought a collage of past and current pictures would capture our vision. We relayed this to One Eye Blind Media, and they created a logo with the pictures we provided. One Eye Blind Media also did several “stinger” videos we will post on Facebook.

The band (which includes a dance team, color guard, and a twirling squad) is open to anyone 18 years or older. Band members hail primarily from the Pacific Northwest but come from as far away as Ohio, Texas, Arizona, and California for special events.

The Beat Goes On features a diverse array of sounds. They lean towards the high-energy, brassy, rock-and-roll musical style, but also play patriotic tunes, funk, jazz, soul, polka, and marches. While the band plays most of its events in and around Oregon and Washington, the band has performed in various locations across the world, including a 25-mile floral parade in the Netherlands, alongside Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower, aboard a Caribbean cruise ship, and atop the Great Wall of China. Al Kader Shriners brings parade thrills! The Al Kader Shriners, headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon, is a fraternal organization comprised of Shriners who are members of various local Masonic Lodges under the Grand Lodge of Masons in Oregon. Al Kader Shriners is under the auspices of Shriners International and promotes fun and fellowship of the Fraternity. The Al Kader Shriner’s purpose is to support and call attention to the dozens of Shriners Hospitals, Burn Centers, and Specialty Clinics that provide care for children throughout the world, especially the Portland Shri-

ners Hospital; providing care for children with orthopedic needs, including spinal cord injury, cleft lip and palate needs, bone fractures, sports injuries, and burns, regardless of the parent’s ability to pay. Among the many means of promoting both the fraternity and philanthropy are the various Shriners Units and Clubs that participate in a multitude of civic parades throughout the United States. The participating Units today represent some of the various Clubs and Units that make up the membership of the Al Kader Shriners.
