For children and parents who want a safe, easy way to obtain Halloween candy, there are a few options for Columbia County residents to “trunk or treat” this October. One option is to attend the third annual “Trunk or Treat” event that the St. Helens Police Department (SHPD) is hosting this year. The event is free and will take place on Halloween night, Oct. 31 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at SHPD headquarters, located at 150 S. 13th Street. Children will
be able to receive candy from local businesses and other community organizations, as well as learn about other programs in the community they can participate in. Children are encouraged to arrive in costumes, and adults must accompany children throughout the event. More than 300 children participated in last year’s event, and it is expected this year’s event will yield a higher turnout. The deadline for submitting an application to host a booth or car is Wednesday, Oct. 23, and forms should be submitted to SHPD. Forms are free and available on the police
Enjoy Guided Tours of Halloweentown City Hall Members of the Columbia County Museum Association (CCMA) will lead guided tours of the historic Columbia County Courthouse, which served as Halloweentown City Hall and the mayor’s office.
Tours will take place October 12 and 19 from 1:15-5 p.m. Photo opportunities with movie props and replica costumes. Suggested donation of $3 for 12 and older.

The event is free, and hosted by Highway 30 Cruisers, and Moose Lodge members. The team will be handing out candy to all children aged 12 and younger. Children are encouraged to wear costumes. At the event there will also be a fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Boy Scout Troop 106 Christmas Hot Meals program.

Permanent restrooms are located across from City Hall, and there are many portable facilities behind the Rose Garden. Food: There are several restaurants & pubs in St. Helens by the square. Vendor carts with delicious foods will be available on all weekends. Enjoy the yum!
Apparel and souvenirs: The Official Spirit of Halloween Gift Shop is located at Cuts +, directly across from the Courthouse Square. St. Helens, Oregon gear is available at Woodland Cottage, located directly across from the square. Quantities are limited, so plan a stop as early as possible to get your favorites. Staying? There are two hotels available in the area: The Best Western Oak Meadows Inn (503-3973000) or Motel 6 at Village Inn Restaurant ( 503-3971490). Deer Island Manor is another option at http:// www.deerislandmanor.com or Nobb Hill B&B at http:// www.nobhillbb.com (this is the only location within walking distance). You can also check out our local Airbnb as a consideration. Make sure your reservation is in 97051 area code. If you don’t mind a drive, we now have an official Host Hotel in Portland. The Silver Cloud Inn is wonderful, and the closest you can get to experience both PDX and St. Helens, OR – it might take a half hour to an hour with Halloween traffic to St. Helens, OR from this location, so plan accordingly. Halloweentown resides in St. Helens, Oregon, at The Courthouse Plaza 97051. It is a real city, which you can visit at no charge. There are free activities as well as paid activities and lots of fun photo ops, too. Most pay-asyou-go activities require cash only. You can pay as you go at any activity but you will save money by purchasing the One Big Ticket Pass. This pass allows you to use it both days so that you can spread out your activities at the most convenient time for your family. It also includes unlimited free Shuttle to uptown anytime you wish (limited to shuttle hours) where other activities take place within a few steps of the drop off locations. Some signs of radioactive leaking, and hard to ignore the chemical smell of contamination from the river. Even stranger, it seems the apocalypse hit in the middle of a city-wide Halloween festival - there are old decorations everywhere. This town was obsessed with Halloween! These remnants of an old festival might be the sign of hope our group has needed. We are going to rest here, keep looking for people to help. Need to let folks tell their story, reclaim our humanity. We found a building that can be secured, big enough for all of us. We can make it safe for you. We have left this message for you. You are still here. You have a story to tell. We have all done bad things, and we can do better. Let us help you. Find us here in St. Helens, along the Columbia River. Spread the word. The search continues, we are waiting for you. Ticket holders will be given a minimal character role in our story, a place to stop running and rest at our interview table, and a small bag of supplies from our survival stash. Mature audience members only please, children under 12 prohibited. Tickets include the potential for group participation, but with the unpredictability of the apocalypse, not all stories may be recorded. The Shuttle runs on weekends only: The shuttle is not ADA compliant. Tour includes shuttle ride, and keepsake map of exhibits. $5 dollars. Children under two free. • 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. - Walk to the Alien Landscape & New Alien Museum Take a walk to the alien outpost and get a super cool photo. Return to the Masonic Ballroom across from Courthouse Plaza where you’ll enter and watch some recorded close encounters and hear some actual police radio reports of the alien ship that visited St. Helens, Oregon. Hear what our local law enforcement has to say about an alien encounter and check out all our amazing alien artifacts, take some wonderful and fun photo ops and believe they are out there! Cash only onsite $5. Entrance includes Alien Color Changing Cup. Included on One Big Ticket Passes. • 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. - Festival of the Fairies Riverfront (by fenced area in front of 295 Strand Street) The fall never looked so magical! Come enjoy quality family time at this fun-filled location designed with playful activities within a mysterious setting. This setting on the waterfront comes complete with “stone hedge” boulders hosting dragons & fairies resting on arches, a giant magic wishing tree where you can throw a penny and make a wish in true storybook fashion, fires, hammocks to hang out in, a storytelling bat house, and peek boxes. Enjoy the bigger–than-life games, scavenger hunts, hula-hoops, Whack-a-Witch, Dragon Story theater, Zorb Ball Racing throughout the day. Hug a goat at the Tiny Farm or enjoy some maypole dancing. Wear a magical costume and become part of the fun. The area is designed for the playful at heart and there is a lot to do and experience. We reserve the right to add even more activities too! Strollers are allowed. Small dogs are allowed if carried by owner. Peter Facinelli (Dr. Carlisle Cullen): Peter Facinelli, who played Edward’s father, Dr. Cullen in “Twilight” will be in St. Helens at 6:45 p.m. on Oct. 12 to light the ginormous pumpkin at Plaza Square. He will also be available for photo ops and Meet and Greets the same day. J. Paul Zimmerman (Dylan) and Phillip Van Dyke (Luke): Both “Halloweentown” actors, who played Marnie’s younger brother and Marnie’s rival respectively, will be present at the “Boys of Halloweentown Photo Op,” which will take place from 3:30-5:00 p.m., Saturday Oct.
The month of October is a festive time in St. Helens, Oregon. Known as the place where Disney TV movie “Halloweentown” was filmed, the city gets dressed up and recreates the magical town where Marnie Piper saved the witching world from evil Kalabar. This year, several actors from various magical worlds are returning to meet fans who love Halloween. This includes three actors from “Halloweentown” and one actor from “Twilight,” both movies which had several scenes filmed in St. Helens. Scenes from the first “Twilight” movie filmed in St. Helens include the house of Bella Swan’s father, the Petite Jolie dress shop, the Thunderbird and Whale bookstore, the Bloated Toad Italian

Rino Romano (Benny): Known for being the skeleton taxi cab driver “Benny” in Halloweentown, Rino Romano will be available in the flesh from 3 – 4 p.m. on Oct. 19 for a photo op inside a replica taxi cab located at Plaza Square, with “Benny” the skeleton in the front, and you and Romano in the back. he will also be present at the pumpkin lighting ceremony at 6:40 p.m. the same day. Other characters will also be present at different pumpkin lighting ceremonies: The dentist creature, the pin cushion secretary, the two-headed man, and Aggie’s friend Harriet. While magic may be fictional, the characters who brought it to life are real. Those who mingle with these celebrities will have the opportunity to be a part of the magic themselves.
Good chili for a good cause On Saturday, October 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, Halloweentown revelers will be able to enjoy a chili supper and help house two families in St. Helens. Five churches of St. Helens are combining to share their cooking skills to raise money for two townhouses being built by Columbia County Habitat for Humanity. The hosting church, First Evangelical Lutheran, is conveniently located only six blocks from the Courthouse, at 360 Wyeth Street. (Parking is available.) The admission charge of $8 for an adult and $4 for a child will entitle guests to unlimited tastings of multiple chilis, plus cornbread and
cookies. Costumed guests will also receive candy from the costumed servers. Members of the participating churches are having fun digging out Halloween costumes and refining family chili recipes. “My son-in-law is trying to coordinate his pirate costume and his chili, experimenting with making black chili,” Vicar Jaime Sanders of Christ Episcopal Church said. Consideration is also being given to the variety of eating preferences of guests: the chilis will include vegetarian options, and Pastor Jared Maddox of First United Methodist Church promises a deli-
cious gluten-free cornbread. Guests will be invited to vote for their favorite chili, because of course every cook thinks theirs is the best. The Chili Cook-Off is part of the commitment by churches of the St. Helens Ministerial Association to a “Faith Build,” creating new affordable homes for two families of our community. The participating churches, First Lutheran, Plymouth Presbyterian, the Christian Church of St. Helens, First United Methodist, and Christ Episcopal, and their members, are donating the food and covering expenses, so all proceeds will go to construction costs.

Brave the zombie apocalypse in 2019 ShoeString Halloween Events “FEAR. Tell Us Your Story”
The volunteers behind “FEAR. Tell Us Your Story” in support of Hometown Heroes.
FEAR & Bravery. Fiction and Truth. Playful storytelling, and real-world challenges. Life is about the stories we tell - the community stories which bind us together, and the personal ones which shine a light on our individual journey. For one weekend in October, a hearty troupe of volunteers has an apocalyptic story to tell you, and we want to hear your characters’ harrowing tale of survival, as well. Sponsored by a collaboration of local small-town organizations, with part of the proceeds going to benefit Hometown Heroes of Columbia County, it is our thrill to present the chance to face what you need to overcome in “FEAR. Tell Us Your Story.” Taking place in a time overrun by the undead, dealing with nuclear fallout, and threatened by people turning against each other for scraps, a temporary safe house has been established in downtown
St. Helens run by small groups who have banded together to help each other not just survive, but to thrive in this new world. You are invited to join us on this adventure and help other survivors, but we have to hear how you made it this far. Every person who comes to our refuge will receive some form of aid, but those whose stories earn our trust will be given the opportunity to join us when we relocate to less treacherous territory. Only by working together will we survive the next leg of our journey. Ticket holders will be given a minimal character role in our story and a place at our interview table to rest. Mature audience members only please, children under 12 prohibited. Your story matters to us, but the threats in this dark world have their own agenda. Not all stories may be recorded. Because stories matter, we are donating part of our
proceeds to Hometown Heroes of Columbia County. Hometown Heroes has an honored tradition of bringing personal stories from active duty military and Veterans back to the people whom they serve, and shuttling support from their local communities onward to those already deployed. In this way our servicemen and women can stay connected to the neighborhoods from whence they came. Through their stories, those of us who remain at home can honor and revere their service. The CCSO is partnering with Hometown Heroes of Columbia County, and this fall, they are also supporting our local National Guard Unit. Nearly 100 soldiers from Columbia County will be deploying in October. Due to the increased cost of sending so many heavy boxes to our troops, the CCSO is doing additional fundraising. Proceeds from “FEAR. Tell Us Your Story” will be helping

Laughs and Gasps: Catch a screening of ‘Night of the Demons II’ with director Q&A JULIE THOMPSON chronicle1@countrymedia.net
The Shoestring Community Players are bringing the delightful nostalgia of early 90s horror to the Spirit of Halloweentown festival this year, with two special screenings of Night of the Demons II directed by Columbia County’s own Brian Trenchard-Smith. Trenchard-Smith is an English-Australian film and television director, producer, writer, consultant and actor who is notable for his contributions to the horror and action genre during the 1970s and 1980s in Australia. He and his wife Margaret moved to Columbia County as “refugees” from Los Angeles, seeking a more rural life. “We decided to do something totally different and have a new adventure,” he said. “I grew up in an English country village, so suddenly coming to look at this house which was completely surrounded by trees, I thought, ‘oh this is it. I’m going to revert to childhood.’” Having directed 42 longform films, 43 episodes of televisions, over 100 trailers, and various documentaries and short films, including Turkey Shoot, StuntRock, Dead End Drive-In, The Man from Honk Kong, Leprechaun 3 and Leprechaun 4, Trenchard-Smith will be on site for a question and answer session following the screening. The film follows a group of high school students who throw a Halloween party in a mansion haunted by a young demon. The first film was released in 1988, and when producers found financing for a sequel, they were able to bring the key villainess back. “Angela is the female Freddy,” Trenchard-Smith said. “The script was written, and the producers said, ‘What do you think?’ And I said, ‘Well, can we make it a little funnier?’ There were some laughs in the original, but I wanted to

pitch it a bit more horror-comedy rather than 90 percent horror. For some people, they’re maybe not quite getting what they want out of it, but for a lot of people, it made it more accessible.” The film was made with a commercial formula common of that time in filmmaking – the distributors told TrenchardSmith it had to have an R rating, there had to be at least one obligatory nude scene, and of course, plenty of gore. Because of this, the Shoestring Community Players request that only those age 17 and up attend the screenings. “That was the formula, and you know, you have to obey, because you want the producers to get that money back and they did. All those films were successful for those that earned a piece of the pie,” he said. “We’ve got two teens who get together to make love for the first time and we make it clear he is going to use a condom, and then they get interrupted, so her virginity is safe for a little while longer.” But Trenchard-Smith got his comedy into the film, as well. There’s a nun with a yardstick who does a bit of fencing, as Trenchard-Smith is a fencer himself, and he said there are plenty of Catholic jokes. The film was shot over 18 days, six days a week, and was filmed completely at night. The distributor was “kind of
impressed” at around day 16, and two things happened – much of the cast came down with a very bad cold, and the distributor asked if they gave Trenchard-Smith another $150,000, could he add a bigger climax? So, the production shut down for a few days so that everyone could recover from their colds, and the crew built a new set. This one would have a false floor that would allow the character “Angela” to turn into an 18-foot-long snake woman that would appear to be slithering along the floor. “Whereas in fact, she’s walking on her knees under a sliding board,” TrenchardSmith said. For book lovers out there, Trenchard-Smith also has a novel out titled, “Alice Through the Multiverse,” which chronicles the story of a women either stuck in a glitch in time, or suffering from multiple personality disorder, and there is a possibility it will be turned into a television series soon. Ultimately, the money raised at the screenings will go to support the Shoestring Community Players in their future theater endeavors – something Trenchard-Smith believes is vital to the success of the community as a whole. “I think, speaking as a dramatist, and after all drama started with the theater, with Greek tragedy, Greek comedy, and it’s good for a community to gather and watch some players tell a tale that has maybe a life’s lesson or moral lesson,” he said. “As for what moral lesson is implied in Night of the Demons II – Sister Gloria is kind of unsympathetic to start, but her values and her courage save the day. There is another side to the disciplinarian that comes from tough love. But mainly, if anything sums up my filmmaking, what I like to do is to deliver the audience the laughs and gasps just as they got watching the nickelodeons way back in the dawn of cinema.”
