Cardinals Cross Country teams looking to take the next step By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer It was a good year for the LangdonEdmore-Munich Cross Country teams last season, as both took 18th place at the state meet. This year’s team looks to move up further in those standings, as Coach Todd Hetler is very excited about the potential for both clubs. When we asked about each team he said, “A good way to approach this season is, ‘the time is now’. That is true for the girls and boys squads. We have the potential to have the best teams in years. Both squads have talented seniors and upper classmen along with very capable youth. We’re looking for solid results and leadership from our seniors and for our young runners to challenge for the top spots.” Leading the way, once again this year, on the girls side will be Elise Ramberg, who took fifth at state last season and once again made the All-
State team. Ramberg is the only senior on this year’s girls team, which also features junior Lauren Baril, freshman Clarice Brinegar, and eighth graders Jane and Kate Sillers. Sara Houdek and Hannah Lundeby were lost to graduation from last season. On the boys side, the team boasts 12 runners out for the team. Returning All-Region senior Arik Christianson will lead the squad joined by seniors Blaine Perry and Logan Harder. There are two juniors out for the the team in Caleb Hetler and Tucker Regner, plus two sophomores, Alex Brinegar and Mason Mittleider. Mason Christianson is the lone freshman on the club, along with eighth grader Edward Freer and Dameon Bernstrom and seventh graders Kartheek Chapara and Jaxon Rademacher. The Cardinals will host a meet at the Langdon Country Club on Sept. 23, and this year’s State Meet will be held at Souris River Golf Course on Oct. 26

Cardinals Football program has another first - Defend their State Title By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
What a year it was for the 2018 Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals football team! In a season that many thought just making the playoffs would be a plus, the Cards exceeded those expectations and went on to have an undefeated season and win the State Class A 11-Man Football Championship with a thrilling win over Hillsboro-Central Valley. That was the first football title in the Cardinals program history, and this year’s team will try and do it again. The 2019 edition of Cardinals Football is very much like last year, in that only three seniors were lost from last year’s squad including All-Stater Carter Currey, All Region 2A player Alex Lowery, and Holden Mack. Everyone else is back and ready to go. This year’s team features 31 players out in grades 9-12, which is up almost 10 from last year. All of the Cardinals’ offensive weapons are back, led by All-State senior Jackson Delvo and All-State juniors Grant and Simon Romfo. Also back are All-Region senior lineman Jesse Fetsch, plus seniors Sean Gette, Sid Ullyott, Peyton Ullyott, Noah Anderson, Brett Myers, Hunter Feil and Wyatt Kartes. Other junior that are ready to roll include Alex Cluchie, Cooper Zimmer, Roger Economy, and Drew Simpson. Sopho-
mores out for the team are Tucker Welsh, Zach Rostvet, Shaun Goeser and Jacob Pollestad. What is great to see is that there are 12 freshman ready to get the future of the program looking bright in Carter Tetrault, Gage Goodman, Jack Romfo, Brady Regner, Brody Steinmetz, Markus Kingzett, Jacob Rademacher, Alex Gellner, Ethan Okeson, Gage Hochhalter, Orion Nadeau and Hunter Butterfield. The coaching staff is the same this year for the Cardinals. Leading the way is back to back Class A Coach of the Year Josh Krivarchka, and he, again, is assisted by Tim Polansky, Sam Preble and Marty Tetrault. Connor Weber and Alex Quintaine are again coaching the junior high team, while Jeff Schneider is heading up the grade school program. When asked about this year’s Cardinals team, Coach Krivarchka said, “We are excited about the upcoming season, as we return a great group of athletes from last season. The kids have put a lot of time in the off-season and have had a great first week of practice. We are excited to get rolling this Friday vs. Northern Cass.” A reminder, schedule-wise, that the Cardinals will have a combined Homecoming and Senior Night on Oct. 11 versus Carrington. It should be another fantastic year of Cardinals football, and if they stay healthy, another state title is entirely possible.

Lady Cards to bring their “Drive for Five” straight Region 4 Titles By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
It was yet again another banner year for the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals volleyball team last season. They finished the year with a 43-4 record, their fourth straight Region 4 title, and a third place finish at the State B Volleyball Tournament. They lost just one player to graduation, but it was a very important one in All-State setter Madison Pritchard. This year’s Lady Cards team is a very experienced one, but finding a replacement for Pritchard will be a big key in how they do this season. The 2019 Cardinals are led by 2-time AllState senior Callie Ronningen. This year’s team will have a lot of height and great hitters up and down the lineup. Along with Ronningen there are four other seniors on the team: Kaitlynn Scherr, Brooke Bakke, McKenna Belle and Calyn Crockett, who is back after a knee injury early last season ended her year. Juniors on the team are Lexi Olson, Kaylee Lowery, Raelyn Klindt, Dayton Porterfield and Cassie Hoffman. Sophomores include Morgan Freije, Morgan Thielbar, Malori Pletcher, Marlee Hetletved, Abby Forest, Alexa Schneider, Ashley Perry, Rebekah Wells, Lauren Gendron and Tayler Lorenz. There are seven freshman in Halle Jabs, Brenna Schuler, Olivia Christianson, Kiley Davidson, Angelique Hoffman, Taryn Amble and Sarah Nelson. Some junior high players may also be seeing some time on the B and C squads.
Rich Olson, now in his 24th season, is the head coach again this year for the Lady Cards program, and he, again, will be assisted by Tami Flink and Alison Podhradsky. Jane Hart and Morgan Titus are coaching the junior high squads. We asked Coach Olson to talk about this year’s Lady Cards team, and he said, “We have some experience returning this season, but we are looking for all of our players to take their game to another level if we plan to defend our Region 4 title from 2018. We want to become the best team that we can, and we will then see how that stacks up against other teams across the state. We graduated an All-State setter in Madi Pritchard who was a tremendous ball distributor and floor leader for us last season. We will need a player or two to step up and fill the setter role to maintain the stability and consistency we need at setter. We are excited for Calyn Crockett to return this season after a knee injury took her out of the lineup early last season. Calyn is an emotional leader for our team that brings length, athleticism, and skill to our lineup. I think we have a chance to be a very balanced lineup this season and should be able to spread the ball around from pin to pin using 5 or 6 hitters. We think Morgan Freije can become a go-to hitter for us and can take her overall game to a higher level this season. Kaitlynn Sherr has the potential to become one of the top Defensive Specialists or Liberos in the state, which I think will be a key for us if we plan to match up with the best teams in the state. Callie and Lexi are a great combination for us as 6 rotation
