Welcome to the 2020 Fallon County Fair There is “No Place Like Home.” The theme of the 2020 Fallon County Fair took on new meaning months earlier with the arrival of a global pandemic in the Treasure State. There will be some changes to the fair because of the fact COVID-19 has come to Montana and recently to Fallon County itself. One of the biggest changes will be the lack of a carnival during the fair. But there will also be some attendance percentage guidelines the fair will have to comply with and
those will depend on the state’s status and government guidelines, said Shyla Hadley, the fair manager, recently. Still, the fair will bring with it competitions, stage entertainment, traditional 4H/FFA exhibits and livestock events, rodeos and a parade, along with food vendors. “Following COVID-19 regulations, we are only selling 75% capacity of our grandstands seating to all events,” the fair has posted on its Facebook page. The big grandstand events include “Extreme Night” on Friday, the local band “Break-

Among the free entertainment at the fair will be the Timberworks Lumberjack Show, Street Beat, Steve’s Fun Balloons, ROBOCARS, Music City Quartet, the Hot Glass Academy and the Bubble Tower. Among the food vendors at the fair will be the Baker Assembly of God, Knights of Columbus, T’s Traveling Table, Miles City Food Truck, Texas Twister drinks, Otto’s Hideout, Holy Groundz and the Lutheran Church, according to fair officials. Schedule of events Tuesday, August 11 The annual fair will start Aug. 11 with the 4-H Horse Show at 8 a.m. That is the only event scheduled for the day. Wednesday, August 12 The second day will start at 11:30 a.m. with the Llamas and the Alpacas on display, followed by the Cat/Dog event at 2:15 p.m and 3:15 p.m. Starting at 3 p.m., there will be the Open Class Drop Off, which will run until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 13 The fair will officially kick off Thursday with the Dairy Cattle Show and the PRCA/WPRA Slack both starting at 8 a.m. The Goat Show/Goat Trail will start at 9 a.m., followed by the Bum Goats/Bum Lambs at 12:15 p.m. The Rabbit/ Poultry kicks off at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Breakaway Roping Slack starts at 5 p.m. The judging of the indoor exhibits will start at 9 a.m.
and continue for the rest of the day. Friday, August 14 The Steer Roping competition will start at 8 a.m, the same time as the swine. The exhibit hall will open at 9 a.m. and will stay open until 9 p.m. The free entertainment at the fair will start at noon, along with the vendor booths on the fairgrounds. At 1 p.m., the Sheep are scheduled, while the Beef Cattle and 4H Silent Auction will start at 3 p.m. The 4-H/FFA Market Beef show is slated for 5 p.m. “Extreme Night” is set for 8 p.m. in the grandstands, with a general admission charge of $15, with 18 and under charged $5 and those six and under free. The “Extreme” will be combining medieval jousting, lumberjack and laser in the evening show. Saturday, August 15 It will be Military Day at the Fallon County Fair Saturday, with the exhibit hall opening at 9 a.m. and the vendor booths serving at 11 a.m. On the schedule will be the Round Robin Showmanship at 8 a.m. There will be a break in the action at the fairgrounds when the Fallon County Fair Parade starts at 10 a.m. and travels through downtown Baker. The free entertainment will start at noon on the fairgrounds, while the PRCA Rodeo begins at 1 p.m. with a “Military Day” theme. Strolling acts are slated to begin on the Midway at 3 p.m. The 4-H/FFA Livestock sale will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Fallon goes medieval on extreme Friday performance Staff Report
Two mounted rivals facing off in full medieval armour will battle in front of the grandstand on the Fallon County Fairgrounds. The Sport of Kings will be returning to Baker for its second straight year of performing a full-contact sport which has seen a resurgence in recent years. For the Knights of Valour, it is something they have been doing for American and Canadian audiences for more than 20 years. Since 1997, the Knights of Valour have been entertaining North American audiences with exciting shows of horsemanship, bravery, and chivalry, according to the group’s Facebook page. The jousters perform at fairs, festivals, special events, along with Extreme Jousting tournaments all over North America. According to the online website howtheyplay.com, the rules for jousting
are simple. Jousting is a competitive sport between armored riders on horses, who use a large lance to charge at each other at high speed. However, how it was scored in medieval times is vague, the website explained, relying on assumptions made from writings and etchings. The website also explained that an individual joust consisted simply of two knights in armor on horseback, charging at each other with raised lances in an attempt to unseat one another. tournaments where many knights could gather, often with other combat events and festivities. The most basic requirement of a jousting competition was an invitation from the host of the event, which often required the rider to be of noble lineage himself. That is one of the reasons it has been called the Sport of Kings.
The playing area would be set up in an area where a long runway for the competitors could be set up. The runway was called a list, but there were no standard measurements as to length or width. Even the major weapon in a joust, the lance, was not regulated as to construction or length in medieval times. According to history, many knights had their own preferences for lances, based on their experience or strengths. For the stronger knights a larger, heavier lance may be used to gain an advantage Originally, the goal was to dislodge the opponent, forcing him to the ground. Later, the joust added the attempt to put the lance through a ring to show off expertise and technique rather than brute force. By the 17th Century, the sport waned. In modern times, the Commonwealth of Maryland has made jousting its state sport.

The sport itself returned with the popularity of Renaissance Fairs in North America decades ago. Now, the common rules for the modern version of the sport set the lance length at no more than 10 feet with the tip being made of foam. The armor has rules governing the construction of the helm, gorget, body, groin, hands and the leg/arm/shoulder area. There are rules governing the construction and size of the shield. According to the current rules, a match will have three passes or tilts where the goal is not to unseat but to break the lance on the body or shield of their rival. Generally, depending on the marshal at each competition, the highest points are given when the lance tip is shattered. Fewer points are earned when the lance tip is broken off as a single piece, and less are given when the lance makes contact but doesn’t break. In addition to jousting at the fairgrounds that evening, there will be lumberjack and laser performances.
Cowboy Church offers fellowship Several area churches will be ministering together to bring the Cowboy Church services to community members and fair-goers alike Sunday, Aug. 16 in the covered grandstands on the Fallon County Fairgrounds. The service will start at 10 a.m. Among the participating churches are American/Peace Lutheran, Baker Assembly of God, Lakeview Baptist and Changed for Life. According to the organizers, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the event.

For the second straight year, there will be no carnival during the 2020 Fallon County Fair. Instead, there will be free entertainment for the people outside at the Fallon County Fair. The fair will start Aug. 11 with the horse show event in the morning, but the full schedule of events will start Thursday Aug.

PRCA rodeo lassos fans at fair The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association will have a big part of the 2020 Fallon County Fair, with competitions set up for Thursday, Aug. 13, Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16. The PRCA rodeo events will begin Thursday when the PRCA and the WPRA hold the slack competition at 8 a.m. in the arena. The Breakaway Roping Slack will be held at 5 p.m. Steer Roping will be held at 8 a.m. Friday in the arena. The PRCA returns to the grandstands again Saturday when they will hold a “Military Day” theme for the 1 p.m. event. The final PRCA event will start at 1 p.m. Sunday with TETWP – “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” – competition in the arena. The C5 Rodeo Company is reportedly the stock contractor for the the 2020 Fallon County Fair with locations in Three Forks and LacLa Bioche in Alberta. The rodeos will include all the PRCA sanctioned events like bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie
down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. In addition, Mutton Busting is on the schedule for Saturday and Junior Barrels on Sunday. Youth between the ages of 5 and nine can participate in the Mutton Busting events, with each contest limited to the first 15 entrants. They are required to have a helmet, long sleeves, jeans, closed toed shoes and must be within the 80-pound weight limit. In the Junior Barrels event, there will be age groups of 6 and under, seven to 11, 12 to 15 and 16 to 18. The parents must sign up their child to compete in each of the events with the necessary paperwork found online at www.falcofair. com or in the Fallon County Fairgrounds office. General admission for the rodeo will be $15 for adults, $5 for 18 and under, six and under will be free admission. Admission for the rodeo slack events will be free.
Fair Safety
In case of an emergency during the fair, guests can go to the nearest shelter - the grandstands, main exhibit hall or the livestock barn. A first aid kit is now also available at the ticket booth at the grandstands. Fairgoers should respond accordingly to any announcements indicating hazardous weather or safety concerns.

Local band has strong rodeo flavor
Breaking Eight is a bull riding reference. The band is making some noise online and performing in a lot of locations, like Las Vegas. And now, Baker will be added to the list, when they perform at the Fallon County Fair on Aug. 15. The band only started up a few years ago. “We are a pretty new band,” Beni Paulson explained. “We pretty much do our own music. We started the band to do our own stuff.” The band recorded its second album in Nashville six months ago, he said. “Music born on the back of a bull is kind of our slogan because it signifies we are high energy. I used to be a bull rider and Jerilyn was a rodeo competitor as well,” he explained. The group got together because they all wanted to write music and do original music on rodeo and the western way of life, he said. “I knew Ty (Taylor) and Luke (Smillie). We all played together in previous bands throughout the years. We happened to be in western North Dakota anyways. “I moved from Killdeer seven years ago,” he said. The final piece to the band puzzle would come from the Montana border town of Baker, Paulson explained. “Jerilyn (Wiseman) was going to school at Dickinson State University. I had read a bio of her because she was a rodeo student that she was a competitive fiddle player.” “I did a little asking around and a little research on her to make sure she was a decent per-

son. Once I determined that, I called her up and asked her if she would be interested.” Paulson said “she is kind of the superstar of the group.” The band had been traveling, including performing at the PBR Finals in Las Ve-

gas, but the travel has been limited by the COVID-19 pandemic, he said. He added that the band’s music videos for “Lost and Found” and “Still Around” show what the band can do. “It is very representative. The video companies and us are getting more efficient doing these videos as well.” Home crowd Wiseman came to Baker to stay years ago when her family returned to Fallon County where they had ties, allowing her to finish
up her final two years at the high school and competing in local rodeos. Her events were barrel racing, team roping and breakaway. After graduation, she went on to Dickinson State University and spent four years there on the Blue Hawks’ rodeo team. “I kind of grew up with rodeo. I was fortunate. My parents rodeoed my entire childhood. I was on a horse from the very beginning,” she explained. Wiseman took up the fiddle when she was six years old. That choice would eventually lead her to Paulson and the Breaking Eight who were looking for a fiddle player at the time. While in college, Wiseman said she saw herself returning to Baker after graduation and working. At the same time she had been gravitating away from music because it was not fun anymore. “Then I met this great group of people. They have become four of my very best friends in no time flat. It (music) has gotten to where it is a lot of fun again. I have gotten more passionate about it. I didn’t see myself doing anything other than staying around here and trying to raise some horses, train some horses, rodeo and work at the bank.” “I am getting to do the best of both worlds
at this point,” she said. “I play music and go see places, meet some great people.” “I didn’t see this coming – playing in the band. It was definitely a push from God in the right direction.” “I was the last piece of the puzzle. They had already been playing before I joined. It is crazy how close we have gotten in the last year and a half because they have all known each other for 10 or 20 years. They have been playing music together, on and off,” she said. The lead guitar player, Ty, lives the furthest away in Stanley. “He is just crazy good on the guitar,” she said. “He is just a joy to be around and quickly became one of my very best friends.” The drummer, Luke, is from Regent in Hettinger County. “All of the guys have become very close to me.” Wiseman said. “We’re really lucky. There is no bad chemistry. We call each other every day and talk. It is really nice.” The band already has two albums online, the first (Breaking Eight) was released in February 2019 with the second (Double Down) put out in May 2020.

4-H kicks off fair early with Horse Show When it comes to the 2020 Fallon County Fair, there will be one group of people who will get a head start. While the fair will start Aug. 13 for most people in the county, the agriculture, crafts and 4-H/FFA will have been busying competing for two days at the fairgrounds The fair will start for the 4-H competitors on Aug 11 with the Horse Show competition at 8 a.m. That will be the only competition for the first day of the fair which has a theme of “No Place Like Home” this year. There will be both “indoor projects” and “outdoor projects” competing in the fair. The indoor projects will all be in the Exhibit Hall. The events will be following guidelines set by the Fallon County Health board, according to the Montana State University extension agent for Fallon and Carter counties, Michael Millward. He is in his first year as the extension agent for the two counties and will be going through his first Fallon County Fair. There have been some changes to accommodate the new COVID-19 reality in the Treasure state, he explained. “I don’t think that it will be having a huge impact on our events because of the size of the facilities that we have. We can not ex-
ceed 75 percent of the maximum capacity. Because our numbers typically don’t reach that level, we won’t have a huge impact. We will still need to follow all of the recommendations, such as cleaning your hands, using hand sanitizer and staying away from each other five feet of distance, the extension agent explained. “I have asked people to wear face masks, but that is in no way a requirement.... of course if we get to where we have four cases in the county, then per the governor’s mandate, we’ll have to have face masks,” he said. The extension has been continuing to coordinate with the county health office and other county officials. “Everybody is aware of the situation and we are doing our best to minimized the risks,” he said. The 4-H members participating at the fair range from eight years old until they are 18 or graduate from high school, he explained. The event will determine which age group. “We have more in the eight to 14 age group range – when they get into high school, we start losing a few of those kids.” The youngest group is called the Cloverbuds (five to eight). There will be a few people coming from North Dakota to participate at the fair. “We have only three people coming over from
Marmarth. They go to school here. They work here. They are kind of part of our community,” he explained. The first event of the fair will be the Horse Show, which gives the entrants an opportunity to show off the skills of the riders and horses to perform a series of tasks. “The events that we have are showmanship, bareback class, horse riding class, and a trial,” he said. “We have eleven members and they pretty much participate in most of them.” On the second day, the animals will be brought in for judging. “The horse kids will be there at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. We will have the other animals showing up the following days. We will have Cats and Dogs on Wednesday, the sheep and the goats will also be coming in Wednesday,” he explained. “We will have dairy, beef and swine as well, along with poultry and rabbits.” The animals will be housed in the Barn on the Fallon County Fairgrounds. “Any of our breeding projects are longterm. All of the Market animals will be for sale, whether that is a rabbit or chicken, or beef or pig.” In Fallon County, there is a minimum weight that market animals must reach. “The animal also has to be healthy to travel across
any state lines. They need to have a health certificate from a veterinarian. “We also do a little test when they get here to make sure they can work with them and they are not wild and not a danger having them at the fair,” he said. When it comes to judging the top award is the Grand Champion, the Reserve Grand Champion. “That will be first and second place for each species. Then each animal s judged on how they meet the criteria that animal should be able to reach. Are they an exceptional animal. Are they an average animal or are the less than an average animal. “If they are an exceptional animal …. they would get a blue ribbon because that animal met the criteria for it to be an exceptional example of that species. “If they had an average animal, then they would get a red ribbon. If they had a less than average animal, then they would get a white ribbon,” he said. “That would go for each animal at the fair,” he added, “even if they were not the best of all the animals there.” Most of the entrants are involved in more than one project, with 39 involved in the Market Beef project, he said. There are 34 in the market swine project. “Several of the participants would do both,” he said.

4-H/FFA Livestock Sale
The annual 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale will take place Saturday, August 15, after the rodeo at approximately 4:30 p.m. Potential buyers who are interested in purchasing an animal have two options. A buyer may purchase an animal outright by paying the total cost and taking possession of it or pay only the amount bid above the current market price. The market value will be based on local markets and will be announced before the sale. The Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Market Beef animals will not be eligible for premium bids. Buyer numbers will be used again this year. Buyers should be sure to register and pick up a number Saturday, Aug. 15, before the

Demolition Derby closes out Fallon County Fair gate. It will follow the Big Sky Demolition Derby Rules, with main heats, a grudge heat, a truck heat and the finale. Also on the schedule is a Teen Herbie Derby and a high school race. “The Herbie race will have to be ages 10 to 14 and a parent would ride with them because of safety precautions. The high school heat is ages 15 to 18. The car heat and the truck heats are pretty wide open,” she added. Registration for the event will be held at the gazebo in the nearby park by the lake, she added. Approximately $8,000 in prize money will be paid out for

The final afternoon of the 2020 Fallon County Fair is guaranteed to close out with a bang. The annual Demolition Derby will make sure of that when it closes out the final grandstand event of the fair. But the biggest race may be trying to get one of the free tickets to the Derby Sunday afternoon. “We are giving away a limited number of free tickets,” said one of the organizers, Polly Davis. The derby is sponsored by the Baker Wrestling Club. General admission tickets are $10, with children six and under being free. To sell an animal at the fair, 4-H and FFA members must complete a Livestock Quality Assurance training a minimum of every other year. LQA teaches record keeping, food safety and proper techniques of handling animals. This insures a safe, high quality product for the buyers, not only at the Fallon County Fair, but also at the supermarket.

If possible, you will want to attend the sale in person. You, as a potential buyer, have two options when purchasing an animal.
