Remembering 9/11

On September 11, the nation remembered the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Although it has been eighteen years since the horrific attacks, many Americans can still recall that morning as though it was yesterday. “I was working taking care of natural gas wells when I heard it on the radio,” recalled Baker Fire Chief Tom Bruha. On 9/11, 2,997 victims lost their lives and 412 of those victims were emergency responders. Of those 412 there were 343

firefighters, 37 police officers from PAPD, 23 police officers of the NYPD, one patrolman from the New York Fire Patrol and eight emergency medical technicians and paramedics. There were 2,606 people in the World Trade Centers that lost their lives, as well as 125 in the Pentagon and 265 individuals from the four planes. There were more than 6,000 others injured. “It was an impact to the country,” said Bruha. “Firefighters died. Police officers died. The public died.” Today many of the emergency responders who arrived on

the scene that day are suffering from long term physical and emotional ailments. The Baker Fire Department remembers 9/11 and those who were impacted by flying the American flag high on one of their trucks in front of the Fire Station. They will also have a training that night that will include remembrance of 9/11. “That’s how we remember it,” Bruha said. “I hope the country stands diligent against terrorism and it doesn’t happen again,”

Shumaker named new head girl’s Little Beaver Conservation basketball coach

This November the Baker Lady Spartan basketball team will kick off their season with a new head coach, Jay Shumaker. Coach Shumaker is a long-time Fallon County resident, having gone to high school in Plevna. Shumaker graduated college in 1992 with a teaching degree after spending a lot of time trying to decide if he wanted to major in teaching or engineering. “I think I was probably leaning towards it [teaching] at different times,” he said. “I

kept bouncing back and forth.” Shumaker student taught the last semester of his senior year and knew that he would love it. “I just had a great experience,” he added. “At that point I was almost four years into it, but that sold it.” Shumaker has always had a love for sports, and during his senior year of high school he grew an interest in coaching while he was the manager for the girls’ basketball team when the coach allowed him to help with drills. “I never really considered it up until that point,” he explained. “Then you’d show somebody something and they’d pick up on it and you’d see them do it in a game and you’re like ‘hey, I helped her with that skill!’ So that was pretty neat.” After graduating he returned to his Plevna roots and began his career. Along with teaching, he began coaching in the fall of 1992 as the assistant girls’ basketball coach for two years before becoming the head girls’ coach in 1994. Between the boys’ and the girls’ basketball teams, Shumaker coached eleven varsity seasons there. Shumaker decided it was time for

something new and moved to Billings with his new wife, Michelle. “I got burned out and overwhelmed. I was coaching three sports and it seemed like I was in charge of anything and everything at the school,” he admitted. “I just thought I needed a change.” They lived in Billings for a year, where Shumaker worked in financial advising and investments. “I hated it completely. I missed being around the kids,” he continued. “Baker had an opening so back we came, and that was in 2002.” In 2003 he became the head boys’ basketball coach. He coached the Baker Spartan basketball team for fifteen years before resigning. “2017 was my last boys’ season,” Shumaker said. “I did everything that I felt I was capable of with the program. I thought they needed new blood in here and new ideas.” “It was a tough decision. I knew I’d miss it,” he added. The next season there was an opening for the girls’ basketball team, coaching under Sheila O’Connor as the assistant

District denies Pennel Creek dam By Shannon Johnson

On Sept. 4 a public meeting was held at the Senior Citizens Center at 4:10 p.m. to review a 310 application that was submitted with the purpose of putting a dam in Pennel Creek with a spillway that would go across a field and into a natural drainage area, as well as a pipeline with a diversion with the purpose of harvesting and collecting the water that runs by in the spring for use in June and July. Several families that live on Pennel Creek as well as some business owners gathered, to voice their concerns about this project to the

Little Beaver Conservation District. Some of the concerns that were discussed, included the ecosystems in Pennel Creek, the silting, the concern of the reservoir busting, and other people’s use of the creek. After roughly thirty minutes of deliberation and discussion, a motion to deny the project application was made. That motion was seconded, and the Little Beaver Conservation District unanimously was in favor of the motion. The applying party is welcome at this time to appeal the conservation district’s decision through the state.

Sidney and Glendive high school rodeos Over the Labor Day weekend, high school rodeo contestants from the Baker area participated in rodeos in Sidney and Glendive. The Sidney rodeo was Aug. 30-31 and the contestants who participated were Brennan Graham, Kyler Afrank, McKenzie Davis, Mattie Mastel, Colton Turbiville and Jacob Wang. On Friday the 30th, McKenzie Davis placed 16th in the barrel racing with a time of 20.020. Mattie Mastel

The first Medicine Rocks Black Powder Muzzleloader Shoot was held recently on a cool, rainy Saturday. Approximately 35 expert marksmen and women participated in the shoot. . .This past July, Bert and Loretta Schell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. All nine of their children and spouses, 17 grandchildren and their only great-granddaughter helped them celebrate. . .Low temperature Sept. 4 was 36 degrees. . .Last Cattle Drive of the Century commemorative numbered belt buckles are available at Lawler Drug. Proceeds go to the Baker Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture. . .Spartan football team traveled to Plentywood for a non-conference game and defeated them 390. Lady Spartan basketball team hosted Roundup Sept. 3 and defeated them 51-47. The Ladies played host to Huntley Project Sept. 4 and won 54-31. . .Plevna Cougars

The Great Montana Cattle Drive and Wagon Train of 1989 may be over, but for some Fallon County residents it will be a cherished memory. Area residents who took part included Charlene and Frank Mehling, Leland and Virginia Gundlach, Cleo and Bea Barkley, Dorothy and Sharlotte Beckers, Garnee Erickson, Elaine Traweek, Darryl Espeland, Tom Jardee, Belle Wendelburg, Llewell, Craig and Vance Johnson, Don and Penny Denning, Hubert Abrams and Dan Murphy. . .A large crowd turned out at the Jim and Wanda Bickle ranch Sept. 9 for a celebration. The occasion was 100 years of ranching for the Bickle family. . . Bob Neumann of Baker has been appointed to serve as a volunteer spokesman for the National Cattlemen’s Association in this area of Montana. . .Lakeview Golf Championship held recently. Winner of the women’s championship flight was Pam Nelson and winner of the men’s championship flight was Ernie Scheetz. . .Snow flakes were in the air Sept. 10. . .Baker Trap Club held the Baker Centennial Trap Tournament Sept. 9-10. Leonard Leland won the high overall champ award in a shoot-off with Mike Newton of Glendive.

Belt buckle and overall events winners were Gary Knight and Willard Swanke for team roping and Dixie Berzel for the barrel racing. . .Department of Energy notified the Baker High School recently of their program to enforce the new ruling concerning thermostat settings at 65. Baker High School will comply immediately to the rule that states any and all public buildings will set the thermostats at 65 degrees this winter.

Annual Fall Festival was set for Sept. 27 at the regular meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. This is the annual appreciation dinner given by the Chamber to show appreciation for the business given to Baker businessmen. . .In action Sept. 6, coach “Butch” Donovan’s Spartans dumped the Bowman Bulldogs 38-6. . .Mrs. Sarah Eilek, who has recently been appointed to the position of county public health nurse by the Fallon County Commissioners, will speak at the Baker Community Church Sept. 17. It has been more than 30 years since Fallon County has had a public health nurse. . .Montana Livestock Commission will conduct a hearing in Baker Sept. 12 to determine whether the Baker Livestock Auction, Inc. shall be granted a license to conduct a live-

stock auction sales yard.

Thursday, Sept. 10, 1959--

Arthur Meccage of Baker is the new member of the Fallon-Wibaux area committee for the Farmers Home Administration. He succeeds Alvin Woodsend. . .Noting increased juvenile offenses with the beginning of school, Police Chief Bob Townsend pointed out that the thefts of two cars, vandalism on property, curfew violations, burglary and muffler violators have been happening frequently. . .Curfew will be on at 10 p.m. Sunday night through Thursday night. Friday and Saturday nights it will be at midnight. . .Baker High School football team will open its 1959 season with a non-conference game against Class A Miles City next Saturday. . .Something new in Appreciation Days is being considered by members of the Baker Chamber of Commerce.

Sheldon Lee Rediske, three year old of Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Rediske, was kicked by a horse Wednesday afternoon of last week and received a bad gash over the left eye. Nine stitches were required to close the gash. . .The Purity Dairies, Inc. of Miles City and Glendive purchased the Friendly Dairy, previously French’s Dairy, and took over the management Sept. 1. New manager is Fred Wolfe of Minneapolis. . .The City Council has issued a building permit to the Farmers Union Oil Co. to build on their lots on Highway 12. . .Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schwagel have purchased the corner lot from Don Morrow, north of his residence and store building. 80 YEARS AGO Thursday, Sept. 14, 1939 --

The rodeo under the management of the world famous cowboy and rider, Bob Askin of Ismay, held at the Fallon County fairgrounds last week was considered to be one of the best ever put on in this part of the country. . .The new exhibition building will be constructed on the fairgrounds as a WPA project was the word received here by The Times.An allotment of $4,071 has been given presidential approval. . .A clean-up of “rubber tire” rustling operations in the Ismay area resulted in the arrest of three men. Eight head of cattle were recovered in Billings Monday night announced the sheriff’s office. . .Plevna schools opened last Tuesday with a large enrollment in the grades and high school. There are 21 first and second graders, two in each the third and fourth, 18 in the fifth and sixth grades and 21 in the seventh and eighth. High school enrollment totals 60. . .The Wesleyan Methodist congregation has purchased lots from Mrs. Millicent Lee and will move in the church

building now 16 miles south of Baker. The lots are located just north of the Community Church.

90 YEARS AGO Thursday, Sept. 12, 1929 --

Fallon County Fair is the most successful fair in years. Cold weather limits the attendance, but marked growth is seen in all departments at the sixth annual exposition. . .Baker public schools officially opened their school term Monday morning with the largest enrollment in history. The high school enrollment was 140, junior high 58 and 193 in the grades.

Joyce Glass, 68

Funeral services for Joyce Glass, 68, of Baker, were held Sep. 10, 2019 at Assembly of God Church with Pastor Rod Kilsdonk officiating. Burial took place in Bonnievale Cemetery. Joyce passed away Sept. 5, 2019 at her home in Baker. Joyce Marie was born June 18, 1951 in Baker, MT, to Ralph and Florence (White) Twiford. She grew up in Baker attending school and graduated from Baker High School in 1970. Upon graduating from high school, Joyce began working with the ambulance service and as a CNA. She continued her career as a CNA for several years. Joyce married Edwin

Glass in November 1980. To this union Kathy was born. Together they raised their family in Baker. They often spent their time traveling during Kathy’s childhood to visit Edwins kids: Jack (Coletta) Glass, Darrell (Eve) Glass, and Marlene (Ken) Thompson. Joyce loved spending her time at the nursing home having coffee with the residents and volunteering with bingo. She especially loved spending time with her grandkids. Joyce was an active member of the Assembly of God Church for several years. She will be missed dearly by her family. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Josh) Glass; grandchildren, Edwin and Adalee Lewis; sisters, Etta (Larry) Hanson, Dora Thomas, Bonnie Stinchcomb, and Mary Champion; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death her parents; husband, Edwin; brothers, Clyde, Gene, and Gary; and sisters, Donna, and Lelia. coach. “If that girls’ assistant job wouldn’t have been there and I would have gone a year or two without being around basketball that would have been tough,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with the girls better. It was always a goal in my mind that if that job ever opened up, I would probably apply for it,” he commented. “They’re super coachable and super loyal and they always try to do exactly what you tell them to do. They do whatever they can. I’ve had some great boys that I’ve enjoyed coaching too.” “I put a lot higher expectations on myself than I do on the kids or what other people do. I expect me to be able to figure out a way to win every game. Are we going to? Probably not, but that’s my thought,” he explained. “So yeah, there’s pressure on me, but I’m more excited than I am scared.” “I’m thrilled. It’s a great bunch of girls coming back,” Shumaker smiled. “I’m thankful to the administration and the school board for allowing me to do it.”

Lyson a NILE Merit Heifer recipient Kennedy Lyson of Baker will receive a heifer from L Bar W Cattle Company of Absarokee, MT, a gracious donor, later this fall. After a year of monthly reports, lessons, and breeding the heifer she will show at the 2020 NILE and then take full ownership. Kennedy’s parents are Britney Geving and Derek Lyson.

Willard Homemakers met for their September meeting at the home of Carol Sparks with eight members and four guests present. Summer activities were discussed - our trip to Billings to Zoo Montana and the Iris Gardens; picnic in July; and cooking breakfast at the fair for 4-H families. As a club, we gave several awards at the fair and those winners were named. It was noted that our cookbooks are still available for sale. Our next meeting will be Nov. 12 because of elections

on the first Tuesday. Molly will host. October 1 will be Fall Council meeting in Ekalaka so we will not hold a club meeting in October. All members and their guests are encouraged to attend Fall Council. Lena Zehnder from Switzerland is a guest at the Sparks home for three weeks through 4-H and she was the speaker for the evening. Lena showed beautiful pictures of her homeland and answered lots of questions. We were fortunate to be “arm chair” travelers!

Combat Raider 19-3 scheduled for September 10-12 ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D.

Combat Raider, a military exercise involving various aircraft, is scheduled to begin Sept. 10 in parts of the Powder River Training Complex (PRTC), and will conclude Sept. 12, 2019. Combat Raider provides joint and coalition training under realistic scenarios that support full spectrum operations against modern threats and replicate today’s combat operations.

There is also potential for increased noise levels from areas around Ellsworth Air Force Base and throughout the PRTC. Upland Game Bird Council to meet in Glendive By Montana, Wildlife & Parks

Introducing the New Student Council Baker welcomes back 8th By Hannah Goerndt and Zach Craig

Fun is what draws communities closer, creates interest, and gives someone something to look forward to, with the hope that everyone will work harder because of it. Fun seems to be the goal of new student body president, Katie Wang. Katie was elected at the end of the 2018-19 school year along with vice president, Halle Burdick; secretary, Zachery Craig; and treasurer, Hannah Goerndt. Katie is a senior and has already brought the com-

munity of students at Baker High School together with new social media account “bakerhsstudents” on Instagram, where members of the student body are free to introduce themselves and tell about their summer activities. At her side is fellow senior, Halle Burdick, fulfilling the role as her vice president. You’ll hear these two every Monday, announcing events and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. One of the works in progress projects is a proposed bi-weekly drawing for all stu-

dents, with a variety of prizes being offered. The Student Council also wants to encourage students to participate in all Homecoming events, so special prizes will be awarded during Homecoming Week. To start the year off, Mrs. Bettenhausen sponsored a drawing at the first Student Council meeting. Two lucky students, Katie Wang and Teja Dietz, were the winners of a box of chocolates from Mrs. Bettenhausen’s vacation trip this year and a gift certificate to Otto’s Coffee Shoppe.

Wolf Point football game On Friday, Sept. 6, the Baker Spartans kicked off their season against the Wolf Point Wolves. Kick off was at 7 p.m. and the Spartans received the ball. They drove right down the field and Riley O’Donnell scored the first touchdown for the Spartans. The PAT failed and the score was 6-0. The Spartans then kicked off to the Wolves and stopped them in their tracks to get the ball back. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the first quarter and at the end of the quarter the score was Baker 6 Wolf Point 0. The

Spartans and the Wolves took a little water break and then the Spartans came out and destroyed the Wolves. The Spartans came out strong and scored 22 more points in the second quarter while still holding the Wolves scoreless. At the end of the first half, the score was Baker 28 Wolf Point 0. At school, his favorite classes are math and band, but at home he also enjoys riding his four-wheeler and playing video games. He doesn’t have any siblings, but his grandma runs a ranch, his father is a welder, and his mother works for Denbury. Tuf is happy to be back in Baker, and BHS is excited to welcome him back for a fun year!

On Aug. 29, the Plevna FFA hosted an Ice Cream Social for parents and community members. The meet and greet started at 6 p.m. and the FFA provided ice cream and various toppings for attendees. Parents and communi-

ty members had the opportunity to meet and visit with Mrs. Menees as well as the members of the FFA. This also gave younger students a chance to visit with FFA members and get a look at all the activities in which an FFA member participates. Overall members and community members had a great time.

On Sept. 4, Chloe Tudor, Dacy Buerkle, Nick Buerkle and Mrs. Menees traveled to Wibaux for District Leadership Schooling. They arrived and had a supper consisting of taco in a bag with an assortment of different treats from which to choose. After eating, the juniors and seniors left the gym, while the students that were left stayed for their activity. Kyla Andres and Anna Slivka conducted the 8th grade in a Sophomore Leadership Event. Their activities showed the students just how individual every person is, and how their choices and aspirations all differ somehow from one another. They introduced the students to the idea that short-term goals can lead you to achieve your long-term goals.

State Officers, Caroline Roeder and Andrew Ferrat lead the juniors and seniors in a leadership activity. The members were split up into two groups. While one group worked together to come up with the benefits of being an Ag teacher, the other group came up with some barriers of being an Ag teacher. The groups then joined and presented their benefits and barriers to each other. Then they decided if any of the benefits could cancel out the barriers. After this activity, the students learned how to plan their goals as well as the benefits of planning these goals. The FFA members ended their workshop with a fun game. Overall the members enjoyed the fun night and learned many ideas about planning and reaching their goals.

Homemade musical instruments Mrs. Wagnon’s fourth grade music class worked on a project in which they created instruments from materials around the home. Some materials they used were cereal boxes, wrapping paper tubes, spoons, jars, cardboard and plastic plumbing pipes. They created some unique instruments such as guitars, flutes and spoons. What a wonderful project for the students to use their creativity and imaginations in making their own instruments.

Fall Festival was set for Sep. 7, but the weather had other plans. Due to the cold and wet weather, the music and the bouncy houses for Fall Festival were cancelled, as well as most of the vendors, although three vendors showed up and two remained set up for several hours. The Baker Chamber of Commerce still had plans to hold their duck race, but a downpour in the afternoon caused them to have to reschedule that event. The duck race will now be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, with the Son’s of the American Legion rib cookoff. Products of the Prairie vendors were located inside the vendor building at the Fallon County Fairgrounds so the weather didn’t put a damper on their event. The Baker Lions Club held their dinner and barn dance in the Fairgrounds livestock barn that evening. Although they didn’t have as big of a crowd as last year, those who did show up enjoyed their evening dancing, laughing and eating.

Gloomy weather rains out the Fall Festival Staff from the Baker Senior Center collaborated with Wayne and Gaye Sander to set up a tour of Baker Lake for area senior citizens. September 5, Sander’s pontoon could be seen circling the lake with Wayne at the helm.
