Kids Fishing day is fun and educational By Lori Kesinger Get your fishing gear ready for the annual Tom McGonigal Memorial Kids Fishing day set for Saturday, June 27, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. This will be the fourth year youth have been given an opportunity to catch fish, win a trophy, and have some fun at South Sandstone Reservoir, located nine miles southwest of Baker. Youth will have the opportunity to win door prizes throughout the day, and lunch will be provided to participants. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will again provide educational stations. Don Piesik and Tom Barth will be at the fish cleaning station. A mini first aid class to be taught by Fallon County Ambulance per-
sonnel has been added to the event. Participants can also choose this year to have Jake Wagner fry their fish in the Jeff Greenlee magic fryer. This free event is open to children ages 2 - 17. Only shoreline fishing is allowed with limited parental assistance. Participants should sign-up on the west shore. The annual event is planned by Dave and Bekki Rambur assisted by the Sons of the American Legion. American Legion Post #35 holds flag burning ceremony By Lori Kesinger American Legion Post 35 honored the American flag on Flag Day, June 14, by burning it. Through burning a flag is commonly identified with protest, the US Flag Code says worn flags “should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning”. Those in attendance stood by the Baker Lake Gazebo as members of American Legion Post 35 assisted by the Cub Scouts ceremonially burned approximately 200 flags. The solemness of the work to retire the flags was followed by fellowship and a lunch served by the Sons of the American Legion.
Lights of Life to glow bright for annual ceremony By Lori Kesinger The Friends of FMC Foundation would like to invite everyone to the 12th annual Lights of Life ceremony Sunday, June 28. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. at the Fallon Medical Complex Healing Garden, located outside in the center of the facility. There will be a guest speaker, music and refreshments served by the Knights of Columbus. Lights of Life provides an opportunity to honor and remember a loved one who has died with the simple but meaningful ritual of a candle being lit in a luminary bag during the ceremony.

By Lori Kesinger Many people have a cause that is near and dear to their heart they donate money to. A local fund helping community members in time of need could become one of those causes for you. The Community Fund Drive is a collaborative effort made by two local sorority groups, Preceptor Psi and Xi Alpha Nu. Preceptor Psi began helping the Baker Chamber of Commerce go door-to-door to collect funds to help people many years ago. The Chamber eventually asked Preceptor Psi to take over. They solely held the responsibility for about 15 years. About five years ago, Xi Alpha Nu joined the funding efforts. A committee made up of members from both groups administers the funds. For several years the groups annually walked door-to-door to ask for donations, but this year did not due to lack of membership. A booth was set up at the Southeastern Montana Health Fair to receive donations but not much was given. Last year, donations of $13,900 were collected and $12,000 was distributed to community members. So far this year, $8,750 has been distributed but only $4,562 has been collected. “We would like to tell the people of Fallon County we are putting this money out that we are collecting,” said Barb Ketterling, Xi Alpha Nu member. “We are almost depleting our account and are going to have to lessen the amount we give to people to keep the funds solvent. We don’t want to deplete the fund when we still want to help.” All Community Fund Drive donations collected are distributed back to community members to defray medical expenses or for other disastrous events. “It’s a great thing for the community. It does help,” Ketterling said. “We get a lot of positive feedback from people who receive it.” No matter the amount, you can make a difference. donations can be sent to Community Fund Drive, PO Box 191, Plevna, MT 59344 or dropped off at the Bank of Baker anytime during the year. FILES OF THE TIMES 10 YEARS AGO Friday, June 24, 2005 -- Pat Harrison spent his last day as a Montana Highway Patrolman June 20. He was a patrolman for 20 years, all stationed in Baker. . . John and DeeDee Geving, who have contracted the bus service for Baker Schools for the past four years, are now expanding their business with a commercial tour line. The commercial line has been named Spartan Chariots. . . . Jade Boggs, Zach Hepperle, Jordan O’Donnell and Ryan Varner participated in the Class B AllStar Football Game held June 11 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. They played on the South Team which defeated the North Team 21-18. Jade was named Most Valuable Defensive Player for the South Team. . . June 15 an Older Americans’ Celebration was held at the Baker Senior Center. Emma Heimbuch, a long-time Plevna resident, received a bouquet of flowers in recognition of being the oldest person attending the celebration. . . . High temperature June 18 was 89 degrees. . . Chris Nelson will celebrate his 80th birthday June 25. . . Third annual FWP Fishing Derby was held June 18 on Baker Lake. FWP gave free rods, reels, hooks, sinkers, bait and bobbers to over 80 youngsters 14 years and under. Tillie competed with 17 other candidates from eastern Montana. . . Vickie Haaser awoke from a coma June 15. Haaser had been unconscious since June 8 when she was the victim of an assault in Miles City which resulted in head injuries. . . High temperature June 16 was 96 degrees. . . An open house 80th birthday celebration for David Gray will be held July 2. . . Third annual Joe Montana day will be held July 2 at Ismay. . . Betty Stanhope celebrated her 88th birthday. . . Fifteen Boy Scouts and three leaders embarked on a 30 mile hike last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Twelve of the Scouts completed the hike. Anna M. Lund A memorial mass for Anna M. Lund of Port Orchard, Wash., formerly of Baker, Mont., will be Friday, June 19, 2015, 11 a.m., at St. Philip’s Catholic Church at St. Philips, Mont. with Rev. Father Xavier Arimboor celebrating and Deacon Rick Miske assisting. Interment will follow in the family lot in the St. Philip’s Cemetery. Ann passed away June 12, 2015 in Colorado Springs, Colo., after fighting valiantly against cancer. Ann was born to Donald and Rosalee Axlund on Dec. 20, 1941 in Missoula. Ann attended schools in Missoula and Billings where she met her husband, Cal. They married in 1961 and spent the next 46 years together until his death in 2007. Ann and her family lived in Baker until 1989 when they relocated to Port Orchard, Wash. Ann was a beautician by trade, but also worked in the fields of business, education and government until her retirement from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2006. After retirement, she was involved in many volunteer activities including: Stephen Ministry, Chaplaincy at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Wash., and Mary’s Place Soup Kitchen in Bremerton, Wash. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Cal; her parents; and her brother, Gregory.
Ann is s u r vived by her daughter and son-in-law Marie and Scott Reistad of Colorado Springs, Colo., daughter and son-in-law Kim and Rick Miske of Wibaux, son and daughter-in-law Chris and Dinah Lund of Rocklin, Calif., daughter Cathie Lund of Port Orchard, Wash.; grandchildren Aaron, Nathan and Caleb Reistad, Abigail, Olivia and Zachary Miske, and Sydney and Regan Lund; brothers, George (Marlene) Axlund and Robin Axlund of Wyoming; sister, Dianne Jacobson of Wyoming; sisters-in-law, Linda Axlund of Utah, Vickie Mann of Colo., Peggy Hayek of Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews. Ann will be remembered for her big heart, love of the Lord, and her gifts of empathy and compassion for those she served while volunteering. Her grandchildren were a source of constant joy. Game damage hunts Hunters interested in participating in “game-damage” hunts on private land or possible management seasons this year can register online beginning June 15 with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Quantum Energy issues shareholder update Tempe, AZ - Refinery developer Quantum Energy, Inc. is pleased to issue the following shareholder update on corporate developments. Quantum has recently engaged the consulting services of an investment advisory firm who has directed the company to its team of S-1 attorneys and auditors. As such, the services of the previously announced law firm and its related investment advisors are no longer required. “We are excited about the progress we are rapidly making on both the 2015 audit and the S1 registration filing as we continue to move forward in our corporate governance and refinery development efforts,” said Stan Wilson, Quantum’s chairman. “With the S-1 registration we will become fully reporting and with the capital to be raised we will seek a listing on both a major US and Canadian exchange. The proposed funding will also trigger the permitting process on the first
Recess Relay event May 29, Baker’s third through eighth graders gathered on the football field for the annual Recess Relay event. These students participated in many events including the corn hole toss, ladder ball, old clothes race, three-legged race, and many others to support the cause of fighting against cancer. This year, the seventh and eighth graders joined in the fun and stepped up to help run the races and guide younger students to the events. It was a successful relay and everyone had a great time! All funds raised go to the American Cancer Society.
Judge’s Corner DUI - Refusal to consent to blood or breath tests for alcohol/drugs or both. Section 61-8-402 M.C.A. Blood or breath tests for alcohol, drugs, or both. A person who operates or is in actual physical control of a vehicle upon ways of this state open to the public is considered to have given consent to a test or tests of the person’s blood or breath for the purpose of determining any measured amount or detected presence of alcohol or drugs in the person’s body. A person who is unconscious or who is otherwise in a condition rendering the person incapable of refusal is considered not to have withdrawn the consent. If an arrested person refuses to
submit to one or more tests requested and designated by the officer, the refused test or tests may not be given, but the officer shall, on behalf of the department, immediately seize the person’s driver’s license. The peace officer shall immediately forward the license to the department, along with a report certified under penalty of law stating which conditions provide the basis for the testing request and confirming that the person refused to submit to one or more tests requested and designated by the peace officer. Upon receipt of the report, the department shall suspend the license for the period provided for per statute. The following suspension periods are applicable upon refusal to submit to one or more tests: (i) upon a first refusal, a suspension of six months with no provision for a restricted probationary license; (ii) upon a second or subsequent refusal within five years of a previous refusal, as deter-

Wiseman awarded 2015 Theodore Roosevelt Honor Leadership Program Award mined from the records of the department, a suspension of one year with no provision for a restricted probationary license. the South Team. Baker coach Jay Hoversland was one of the coaches for the South Team. It was a hard fought game, but the South Team came out victorious 37-28.
Dallas Arnell was chosen defensive player of the game. The coach and the Spartan players represented Baker and Baker High School very well.
Coming to the Fallon County Fair: Jeff Martin Comedy Magic By Lori Kesinger Zany antics and whimsical illusions will leave audiences of all ages in both amazement and hysterics when blond curly-haired magician, Jeff Martin, performs at the Fallon County Fair. Martin is a professional comedy magician who has toured extensively to entertain people with the wonders of comedy magic. Martin became interested in magic at the early age of eight. A magician performed at his school and the following Christmas he received a magic kit, both of which propelled him into studying magic. He read every magic book he could at the local library then tried it out on his family. Martin performed occasionally at local community events and private birthday parties during his teen years. Later he made the decision to become a full-time professional magician, and with the help of a friend learned the art of entertaining. Martin is one of about 2,000 full-time professional magicians. He has performed

With today’s launch of Conservation Client Gateway, producers will have the ability to work with conservation planners online to access Farm Bill programs, request assistance and track payments for their conservation activities. “What used to require a trip to a USDA service center can now be done from a home computer through Conservation Client Gateway,” Vilsack said. “USDA is committed to providing effective, efficient assistance to its clients, and Conservation Client Gateway is one way to improve customer service.” Conservation Client Gateway enables farmers, ranchers, and private landowners to securely: * Request NRCS technical and financial assistance; * Review and sign conservation plans and practice schedules; * Complete and sign an application for a conservation program; * Review, sign and submit contracts and appendices for conservation programs; * Document completed practices and request certification of completed practices; * Request and track payments for conservation programs; and * Stored and retrieve technical and financial files, including documents and photographs.
