Rec Center arrest makes school more secure
The rec center is part of the Baker High complex, but it has a separate entrance, the police Address:_______________________________________________________________________________________ chief explained. “The public can use that (the recreation center) as well without having access to the school,” he said. “The key fob will unlock the rec center door but not give you access to the high school.” He later was bonded out with charges pending, according to the police chief. The stolen vehicle was impounded and towed away, and after a search warrant was issued, drug-related items were discovered and sent to the state crime lab for examination, the chief explained. Both Baker Police Department and the Fallon County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the apprehension. Billings Police Department was the originating agency which took the stolen vehicle report, the chief said. The owner of the vehicle is a resident of Billings and told officials that Keil may have been heading to Baker. The police chief also said that it appeared that Keil had only just arrived in Baker shortly before he was arrested.

walked down to the complex,” he explained. “What we have done is locked all of our exterior exits. Now, we have only one entrance which is up front for visitors for the main high school,” Skogen said. “We have also separated access from the rec center site. There is no longer access from the rec center area into the high school.” The school also has added signs and passes for all the visitors at the main office. “Anyone who comes to the school will have to go to the office first and be required to have a visitors pass,” he said. There are a lot of contractors working on construction projects. “They will have separate passes.” The reason Keil came to the school was to use the rec center locker room, according to the superintendent. Because of that, the school has been made more secure, Skogen said. “Hopefully, we have deterred that situation.”
Americanism program focuses on past, current women who served in uniform

The theme of the 2020 version of the Americanism program held in late January was women who have served the country. It also brought together more than 90 students and 17 men performing for more than 120 people in the audience at Longfellow School Jan. 28. According to Steve Zachman, the program
has been part of the Baker and Fallon County history for 56 years. Zachmann, a past state deputy for the Montana Knights of Columbus, was the master of ceremonies for the event which included members of the American Legion Post 35 presenting the colors and local Boys Scouts along with Cub Scouts doing the Pledge of Allegiance. The musicians came from throughout the county, with choirs and bands from Baker and
Proposed pipeline still far in the future

Although the Secretary of the Interior has signed a rightof-way agreement with TC Energy over the routing of the Keystone XL pipeline, it may still be a long time before the pipeline makes it to Fallon County. According to Steve Baldwin, a Fallon County Commissioner, the company has yet to announce plans to follow the proposed route. “There has been nothing going on here as well,” he explained. Local hearings about the pipeline were about ten years ago. “We haven’t heard a word about anything. “But they don’t have to connect with us at all. They have done all their permitting and environmental impact statements,” he said. The only thing the pipeline would have to do is work with the city to connect with the services. “As far as the county, the (TC Energy) has done everything we have asked them.”

Badlands Bowl ends grid rivalry The Badlands Bowl all-star football game will be played one more time. After 27 years, the last all-star football game between Montana and North Dakota seniors will be held June 20 on the stadium at the Dickinson State University campus. Montana holds a 20-6 lead in the all-star competition which has been sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. In 2019, the Montana squad won by a 41-14 margin in Miles City. Organizers said a lack of volunteers, support and more trouble getting players to commit to the event aided the decision to stop after the 2020 game in June.

He explained that he’d chosen to trace the contributions of women from the beginning of America’s entry into WWII. “Immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the need for US men to take active roles in the defense of America, women became the immediate replacements. Not only as “Rosie the Riveteers” in manufacturing, automobile making, shipbuilding and other domestic roles, but also to fill the roles of military men, who were called to front line duty both in the Pacific and European theatres,” he said. He first focused on the WAC’s - Womens Army Corp. women were put on active duty status on July 1, 1943 and formerly disbanded in 1978 and integrated with the male units. The WACS were already part of the Army in 1942 but were expanded with more than 500,000 women serving in WWII,” he explained. George Feydeau’s plays have been a very fortunate choice for Baker students competing in Classical Duo. In 2012, Ryan Espeland and Tessa Kilsdonk brought home the state title in Classical Duo with their adaptation of “Don’t Walk About Nothing On”. In 2014, Darby Bettenhausen State Champions Rachel & Caleb Rost and Isaac Rost swept the competition with perfect scores to win the state championship with their version of the Feydeau piece. And now, in 2020, Rachel Rost and Caleb Rost won state with their presentation of the same play. Caleb Rost commented, “One thing that helped us was that we had seen the piece done well before so we were able build off their success.” Rachel competed in Humorous Oral Interp her freshman and sophomore years, and then Classical Duo her junior and senior year. Caleb is a sophomore and plans to continue with Classical Theater next year. Caleb commented that they went into semi-finals ranked 7th, but had strong showings in semis and finals to bring home the victory.

Troop 29 produced Baker’s first Eagle Scouts Jack Lawler and Emery Chesmore in 1935. . .Divisional wrestling tournament will be held in Baker Feb. 6. Ten teams will participate in the day long tournament. . .The extreme winter storm eastern Montana experienced the weekend of Jan. 23-24 made heavy work for city, county and state employees. It was reported that the road between Ekalaka and Baker had a 20 foot drift that was ten feet high. The Department of Transportation had to bring in rotary blowers to open the road.

R. Tarbox was called to Plevna Wednesday afternoon to take care of Mrs. Gladys Nitschke, Mrs. C. Jordan and R. L. Hamby of Ismay whose car turned over on the icy road and was completely demolished. This FROM PAGE 1 unit was not intended to continue after the war, but Congress allowed for some WAVES to be part of the Naval Reserve and eventually be part of the Navy. WASP - Women Airforce Service Pilots. This is an organization of women volunteer pilots that was never commissioned as part of the US military. They served under contract with the US Military until the end of the war. They mainly ferried planes around the US for shipment overseas. These women were granted Veterans status in 1977,” he told the audience. Many women continued to serve after WWII, and they were called to serve their country again when the Korean Conflict began in the early 1950’s. This picture is of Women Marines. Their roles were much the same as they were in WWII. Desk jobs, switchboard operators and the always present nurses. Women have moved ever closer to the front lines but are still not given rifles and grenades. He also focused on women who recently joined the military. I would like to end by recognizing two recent graduates of Baker High School, Madison Reddick and Kelsey Miller. Madison Reddick is attending the Merchant Marine Academy. She is in training to be a navigation officer. She hopes to be commissioned in the Coast Guard and become a helicopter pilot. She says she is proud to serve our beautiful home. She hopes that more students would choose to attend our academies. Kelsey Miller enlisted in the Marines and has completed
boot camp in just the past few weeks. She will be training for the Military Police. She is proud of her all-women platoon and that her mates have performed well when compared to the all-male platoons. Kelsey joined the Marines to be a part of something that was bigger than herself. The new Montana Heritage Center will be adjacent to the existing Montana Historical Society building and directly across the street from the State Capitol. Its estimated $53 million construction costs include $10 million in private donations, with about $4 million already raised. Dear Editor, During the 2019 Legislature, Gov. Steve Bullock, legislators, and Montanans across the Treasure State worked tirelessly to keep history alive in a variety of ways. Senate Bill 338, also known as the Montana Museums Act, is best known for providing a portion of the funds to build the new Montana Heritage Center. But the legislation also creates an ongoing historic preservation grant program for counties, incorporated cities or towns, tribal governments, associations and incorporated nonprofit groups. Feb. 28 is the deadline to apply for the first round of grants, which are administered through the Montana Department of Commerce and provide up to $500,000 for improvements to historic sites, societies and museums, which can include building repairs and renovations, security and fire protection upgrades, or even infrastructure work. The grants are meant to increase economic development, revitalize communities and enhance tourism statewide while adding jobs, expanding businesses and improving local tax bases. The 2021 legislature will determine grant recipients, with funds being distributed in 2021 across Montana. The money for the grants and for some construction costs for the Montana Heritage Center doesn’t come

Mid-Rivers offers $46,000 in scholarships to area students
Mid-Rivers Communications is proud to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Mid-Rivers Fund for Education Scholarship Program. This year, Mid-Rivers is offering $46,000 in scholarship funds for Eastern & Central Montana students. Over the last 20 years, the Mid-Rivers Fund for Education, which is funded by unclaimed capital credits and donations of capital credits from members, has awarded over $380,000 in scholarships to area students. In 2020, Mid-Rivers will award 32 competitive scholarships and 14 drawing scholarships. Scholarship categories reflect the mission and values of the cooperative and its members. This year’s scholarship pro-
gram includes three distinct categories: •Mid-Rivers Higher Education Scholarship - Twenty-Five (25) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students attending a four-year educational institution or a technical school, available to both graduating high school seniors and current college students. One (1) major award of $5,000 may be awarded at Mid-Rivers’ discretion to an applicant with outstanding scores in the selection criteria and/or an interest in completing an internship with the Cooperative. •Dawson Community College/Miles Community College Scholarship - In support of local educational institutions in Eastern Montana, up to six (6) $1,500 scholarships will be
FWP reminder: Use caution when recreating on the ice
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks encourages ice anglers and others recreating on ice to use caution. Ice conditions are variable across the state. “Ice fishing has been an excellent winter family activity in Montana for generations,” said FWP Helena Area Fisheries Biologist Adam Strainer. “However, safety should always be the first priority when preparing for an ice fishing adventure at your favorite ‘hardwater’ destination.” The safest ice anglers are those who pay as much attention to the changing conditions of the ice as they do to the fishing conditions. This week is a perfect example, with temperatures fluctuating from below freezing to the mid-40s. When on the ice, remember: •If you have even the slightest doubt about the safety off the ice, stay off it. •Blue ice is usually hard. Watch out for opaque, gray, dark or porous spots in the ice that could be weak, soft areas. Ice also tends to thin more quickly at the shorelines. •Watch for pressure ridges. These are areas of open water or thin ice where the ice has cracked and heaved due to expansion from freezing. •Test the ice ahead of you with an ice spud bar or an auger. •Don’t leave children unsupervised on the ice. •Lakes and ponds do not freeze at the same thickness all over. •Moving water - rivers, streams and springs - weaken ice by wearing it away from underneath. Avoid ice on rivers and streams, or where a river or stream enters a lake, pond or reservoir. The following are MIN-

If you break through the ice, you can use the spikes to grip the ice and pull yourself out of the water.

Previous scholarship winners (competitive or drawing, and in any year) are ineligible. That latter statistic may speak to a desire for more financial independence, or a hope to spend a few extra years in the workforce, so they can continue making contributions to retirement accounts. 1 “Retirement” and “work” are no longer mutually exclusive. Whatever your reasons for not retiring at the earliest opportunity, the truth is that many people enjoy good health and vitality well into their seventh decade (and beyond) and see no reason to speed their way into that phase of their life. 2 Social Security will eventually become a factor, whether you retire in your sixties or wait until after you turn 70. We are sometimes cautioned that working too much in retirement may result in our Social Security benefits being taxed. Your benefits
stop accumulating at that age, as do delayed retirement credits. Delaying collecting benefits until age 70 does have one big plus: your monthly deposit will be 132% of the basic monthly benefit. 2 If you do want to make a gradual retirement transition, what might help you do it? First of all, work on maintaining your health. The second priority: maintain and enhance your skill set, so that your prospects for employment in your sixties are not reduced by separation from the latest technologies. Keep networking. Think about Plan B: if you are unable to continue working in your chosen career, even part time, what prospects might you have for creating income through financial decisions, self-employment, or in other lines of work? How can you reduce your monthly expenses? Easing out of work &
into retirement may be the new normal. Pessimistic analysts contend that many Americans will not be able to keep working past 65, no matter their aspirations, and that 70 is out of the question. They may be right, and many will not be able to meet that goal. That said, they may be wrong - you are part of an active, ambitious generation that has changed the world, so don’t be surprised if you also help change the definition of retirement. 3
Gradual Retirement
Not everyone retires the same way – or at the same pace. Are you in a hurry to retire? Not everyone is rushing to that particular finish line. According to the 2018 retirement survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, which gauges the outlook of American workers, 56% of those who describe themselves as “fully retired” did so before age 65, while another 14% said goodbye to the daily grind in the year they turned 65. But that still leaves a significant number - 30% of respondents - working beyond age 65, with some even indicating that they never “expect to stop working.” 1 Are financial needs shaping these responses? For some, though not everyone. Those who retired after age 65 offered a wide range of responses. Forty-seven percent of respondents indicated that they wanted to remain “active” or that they “enjoy what [they] do.” But many indicated that they couldn’t afford to retire (24%), needed to maintain

The end King & Spartan to a Queen of Basketball Spartans Successful Hearts Baker fail to coral the Colstrip Colts Season By Hannah Goerndt
On Jan. 29, the Baker Speech and Drama team began their long trek across the state. Their destination; the 2020 Class B-C State Speech and Drama Tournament held in Bigfork. Competition began on Jan. 31, with the first three rounds and continued the following day with the fourth round, along with semi-finals and finals. The Baker Spartans brought home the 3rd place trophy for Class B Drama. Olivia Gunderson participated in Humorous Solo. Jolyn Rost and Skylar Wall performed in Dramatic Theater and made it to semi-finals. Zachary Craig competed in Original Oratory, progressing into the finals round and placed 8th, while Hannah Goerndt also made it to finals where she took 7th in Dramatic Solo. With a piece entitled “Don’t Walk About With Nothing On” by Georges Feydeau, Caleb and Rachel Rost were named Classical Theater State Champions! “Speech and Drama has been one of the greatest experiences of my high school career. I made tons of memories this year at State and I am so grateful for the hard work and effort that my teammates have put in throughout the season. I’m so glad that our efforts are reflected in the 3rd place trophy that we earned. Go Spartans!” said senior Rachel Rost.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day the members of Baker High School Student Council are hosting a friendly competition. Titled The King and Queen of Hearts, this competition is a creative way for students to participate and interact with each other while competing at the same time. Here’s how it works: the event takes place over the span of two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 11-12. Each student that wants to participate will pay $1.00 for a paper heart. Each participant can purchase up to three paper hearts. On the first day of the competition the girls who have purchased a paper heart compete. The object is to not talk to a boy the entire school day. Of course, discussion during class time is not included in this restriction. If they can’t resist some friendly conversation, they have to give the boy that they talked to their paper heart. At the end of the day, the boy with the most paper hearts will be deemed the “King of Hearts”. On the second day, the roles will be reversed and the boys cannot talk to girls. If they do so, they must surrender their paper heart. The girls with the most hearts will be crowned the “Queen of Hearts”. At the end of the second day the King and Queen will each receive a prize provided by Student Council. Happy Valentine’s Day! There will be two competitions held each day, one for the high school students and one for the middle school students.

On Jan. 31, the Baker Spartans hosted the Colstrip Colts. J.T. Baer of the Colstrip Colts dominated the first half and when the buzzer rang, the Spartans were down 20 - 10. In the second half the Spartans were able to slow Baer down, but the rest of the Colstrip team started putting down shots and the Spartans were unable to control them. When the final buzzer rang, the Spartans fell to the Colts 57-30. Caleb Ploeger led the Spartans with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal. Jaxson Tronstad had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Konner Flint scored 5 points and had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Trent Collins finished with 2 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block. Teight Madler had 1 point, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist. Jacob Wang ended with 2 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 block. Garrett Lesh had 2 points and 1 rebound. Logan Graham had 1 point, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Teight Madler commented, “It was a tough loss, but don’t count us out at tournament time.”

The Baker JV team lost to the Colstrip JV in a home matchup on Jan. 31 with a final score of 24-53. Nathan Schallenberger led the team with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Logan Graham ended the game with 6 points and 2 steals. Rory Lingle scored
3 points. He also had 2 rebounds. Garrett Lesh had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Walker Hadley and Jory Miller both scored 2 points each.
Lady Spartans defeat the Morning Stars By Halle Burdick
On Feb. 1, the Lady Spartans traveled to Lame Deer to challenge the Lady Stars. The Spartans started strong, ending the first half 32-20. With momentum in their favor, the Spartans were able to defeat the Lady Stars with a final score of 67-52. Halle Burdick led in points with 15 and Anika Ploeger followed closely behind with 12 points. Burdick had 12 steals, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Ploeger had 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists. Shelby Moore finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Peyton Janeway scored 8, had 4 rebounds, and 1 assist, while Emily Shumaker scored 6, had 4 rebounds, and 1 steal. Macee Hadley scored 5, had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Mya Hadley had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Ashlyn Lutts scored 3 points, and had 1 rebound, while McKenna Griffith scored 2, had 1 rebound, and 1 steal. Rilee Pettersen had 1 point, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist. Harlee Graham had 2 steals, and 2 rebounds, and Alex Williams had 1 rebound. “We improved our overall free throw percentage and caused quite a few turnovers,” commented Macee Hadley.

Alex Williams and Eve Uecker each scored 7 points, McKenna Griffith scored 6, Rilee Pettersen and Sophia Dulin each had 4, and Kendall Shepherd had 3 points. Eve Uecker finished with 12 rebounds, followed by Makala Gallegos with 8, Sophia Dulin with 7, Ashlynn Lutts with 6, Rilee Pettersen and McKenna Griffith with 5 each, Harlee Graham and Hallie Flint with 4 each, Alex Williams with 3, and Kendall Shepherd with 1. The team had a total of 31 steals, led by Harlee Graham with 7. Eve Uecker had 6, McKenna Griffith and Makala Gallegos each had 4, Ashlynn Lutts and Alex Williams each had 3, Rilee Pettersen had 2, and Sophia Dulin and Hallie Flint each had 1.
Spartan boys Varsity unable to overcome the Morning Stars By Jacob Wang
On Feb. 1, the Spartans travelled to Lame Deer to take on the Morning Stars for the second time this season. The game started off fast paced and at the end of the first quarter Lame Deer led 21-9. Both teams battled back and forth and picked up the pace but at the end of the first half the Spartans trailed 32-23. In the third quarter the teams clashed again but the Spartans were unable to close the gap. The Morning Stars were able to defeat the Spartans 67-47. Caleb Ploeger led the team in scoring with 14 points, Konner Flint had 10, Jacob Wang had 8, Teight Madler had 7, Jaxson Tronstad and Trent Collins had 3 each, and Logan Graham had 2.

On Feb. 1, 2020, the Baker boys’ basketball teams traveled to Lame Deer for some exciting games. The C-Squad won 49-37, with Ethan Gundlach scoring 14 points, Guy Lesh finished with 13 points, Rory Lingle scored 9 points, Nathan Schallenberger had 4 points, and Aiden Wyrwas with 3 points. Guy Lesh led the team in rebounds claiming 9 himself, with Ethan Gundlach taking 7, Bryant O’Connor with 6, Nathan Schallenberger with 5, and Aidan Wyrwas and Rory Lingle each with 2, for a total of 31. Aidan Wyrwas had 3 steals while Ethan Gundlach, Rory Lingle, Guy Lesh, and Bryant O’Connor each had 2 steals for a team total of 11. Guy Lesh also managed 2 assists during this game. The JV team lost in a tight game 48-56. Nathan Schallenberger dominated, scoring 17 points while Bryant O’Connor scored 9, Jory Miller scored 6, and Logan Graham and Guy Lesh had 2 each. Nathan Schallenberger also led the team in rebounds, snatching 12 himself with Bryant O’Connor close behind with 11, Jory Miller and Guy Lesh each with 5, and Logan Graham with 3, for a grand total of 36. The boys had 9 steals together with Bryant O’Connor contributing 4, Nathan Schallenberger with 3, and Guy Lesh with 2.

On Jan. 28, Plevna Concert Choir and Cadet Choir performed in the 56th annual Americanism program at Baker High School. To open their portion of the performance, the Concert Choir sang a gorgeous rendition of “Let Freedom Ring”. Following immediately after was the Cadet Choir, singing a lovely piece titled “We Honor You”. Finally, both choirs came together singing the breath-taking “Pie Jesu”, the song title, having the meaning of “Merciful Jesus, or grant them everlasting peace”. Both choirs were directed and accompanied by Mrs Wagnon.

The Plevna Cougars hosted Ekalaka on Jan. 31, playing an intense game. Sophia Schumacher led the score board with an impressive 4 points. Jaiden Dulin, Dacy Buerkle, and Jenna Paul each made 2 points, and Chloe Tudor scored 1. The final score was Plevna 11 to Ekalaka 64. On Feb. 1, the Lady Cougars played Custer/Hysham at Custer in one of their most exciting games yet! Chloe Tudor led with 20 points; 2 of her baskets were three pointers, and she made 8 out of nine free throws. Coming up next was Jenna Paul, with 10 points, and making two out of two free throws. The remaining points go to Dacy Buerkle, with 5 points, and Sophia Schumacher with 2 points. The game tied and sent the teams into overtime. The game ended with a score of Plevna 37 to Custer/Hysham 42. Keep up the good work!

On Jan. 31, the Plevna Cougars hosted Ekalaka, playing a hard game. Bret Edgell led with 16 points. Cooper Peterson was next, scoring 8 points, then Seth Carroll with 5 and Hadyn Mellon with 4, one of which also being a three pointer. In the end, the score was Plevna 33 to Ekalaka 45. Keep it up boys! On Feb. 1, the Plevna Cougars traveled to play Custer/Hysham and played a tough game. Cooper Peterson led by making 10 points, one of which was a three pointer. Nick Buerkle was next, scoring 8 points, two of which were three pointers. Brett Edgell made 6 points, and both Hadyn Mellon and Seth Carroll made 4 points each. The final score of the game was Plevna 32, to Custer/Hysham 74.

Earlier in December, Mrs. Downing’s first grade class worked on writing and illustrating their own stories. All of the students wrote a story entitled If I had A Pet Elephant. Their books explained what they would do if they had a pet elephant of their very own. The books have recently been returned from the publisher, and the first graders were very happy with their finished copy of If I had A Pet Elephant, which includes every first grader’s story. Congratulations on your stories!

Mrs. Bidwell’s kindergarten students filled their “Good Deed” jar with the buttons they earned for their good behavior and good deeds. To celebrate, they had a Frozen Party. They made snow with a magic powder and water, after which they had a Frozen sing along dance party. They then enjoyed building a snowman by wrapping students in toilet paper and accentuating the snowman with eyes, nose and a mouth. Ice cream sandwiches were an added delight, which they ate as they listened to a Frozen story. Congratulation Kindergarteners!
