Dangerous weather warnings are issued for weekend, beyond

Portions of Montana and North Dakota will be hit hard by a harsh weather front bringing sub-zero highs and even colder nights which will last through the weekend into the first part of next week, according the National Weather Service offices in Billings and Bismarck. At the office in Billings, it was announced that January was a very warm month 5.9 degrees above normal with only a six-day span from Jan. 22 through Jan. 27 being below normal. It was the warmest January since 2006. However, warm weather will be just a memory in early February. The office issued a weather advisory for the Fallon County region Tuesday, warning

a cold front Wednesday would bring some accumulating snow on Wednesday But it also warned another front would hit the area Friday and bring more snow through Saturday. The coldest temperatures of the season may arrive by Saturday with highs only in the single digits and teens, the NWS advisory warned. However, the colder weather may stick around longer. “The colder conditions may persist into next week and beyond, but there is some uncertainty regarding this, so be sure to stay in touch with the forecast for your area,” the NWS announcement stated. The Billings office also issued a warning for travelers through the region. “Travelers should check forecasts ahead of time as some roads will be adversely affected Wednesday through Sunday. Colder
temperatures make it even more important to carry winter survival kits. The colder weather will also threaten young livestock,” the NWS warned. Dakota gets colder According to the office in Bismarck, the prediction would be of dangerous wind chills of 25 to 45 below zero in the western portion of North Dakota along the Montana border. “The coldest air of the season so far will overspread western and central North Dakota this weekend with sub-zero high temperatures and overnight low temperatures around 20 below. These frigid temperatures will combine with 10 to 20 mph winds to create dangerous wind chills from 25 to 45 below this weekend. This frigid air will likely remain into early next week,” the Bismarck office announced Tuesday.

7th Annual SE Montana Coyote Calling Contest
Thirty-eight teams participated in the 7th Annual SE Montana Coyote Calling Contest. Forty coyotes in total were taken. The weather was warm and windy making conditions less than favorable for the hunt. Mark Ferrel and Kris Keller took first place with 8 coyotes. Casey and Ryan Varner and Jason Coulter took second place with four coyotes. Josh Kratzke, Seth and Todd Barkley took third place with three coyotes. City orders more trash tubs, fills appointment Staff Report The City of Baker is in the trash business – literally and figuratively. The tubs used by businesses and residents all even have City of Baker etched into the plastic. But it is time for more of the iconic plastic tubs to be replaced. The City has ordered new tubs in both the 300 gallon and 90 gallon sizes, according to Mayor Steve Zachmann. The tubs come out of the refuse enterprise fund. “Those are ordered to replace the ones that are in poor shape. They are pretty well set in place in sheltered areas where we have racks. Some of them move around a bit... but I don’t know how many of them got moved with that last big heavy windstorm we had,” the mayor explained. The tubs have been repaired by the city crews for awhile. “We are getting a lot of use out of them, but we are at that
point where we need to get some new ones. “The larger ones are set up in the alleys, but there are a few people who do not have alley access so they were given the option of the smaller 90-gallon ones,” he said, noting that a recent windstorm had left an extra one of the smaller trash tubs lying around in his yard. “People have to roll them out to the curb and then roll them back to the house on garbage day. If they miss that day, it will have to wait around for a week,” he said. “We have the luxury of having alley access and the larger tubs that the trucks can pick up. There is no manual labor involved. They can pick up the smaller tubs … they just change the arm on the garbage truck to pick those up. “A long, long time ago we had the metal cans that they came by and picked up. ments that had come from a regional tourism promotion and run through the Baker Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. “The departments which were eligible were the police department, the judge’s office, the counselors, the public works and the city business office,” he said. It was part of the EPEDC and Southeast Montana Tourism – for a promotion called ‘Out Here We Care’,” the mayor said. “The gift certificates were done through businesses in Baker and were for $25 apiece. It was a broad mix (of businesses).” Gas decision Among the other items the council discussed was on whether to buy another quarter interest in the Findlater gas well. “Baker drilled its own gas well a number of years ago and we are selling natural gas. We had another that we had a quarter interest in with two other companies. One of the companies is considering selling a

quarter interest of that and we are looking into that. “Natural gas prices right now are so low that it is really not generating anything and is costing us a little bit every month for the maintenance of that well,” the mayor said. The company has not made an offer, so the city is just looking into the details and feasibility of it, according to the mayor. “We are just looking into their proposal.” Makes appointment The city council reappointed Beth Carroll to the Board of Adjustment, with one position left to fill. The city is still looking for people interested in applying to fill the position, the mayor said. “If anyone is interested, they should get ahold of the planners department. Training is available,” he said. The members of the board review requests for variances and non-conforming uses, hold hearings and deliberate, he explained. “The Board of Adjustments makes the decisions.”

Arnold “Arnie” Huether, 80
Arnold Huether, son of George Huether, Jr and Hulda (Sieler) Huether, was born June 18, 1940 on a farm south of Baker, MT. Son, Jason was born to Arnold and Shirley (Brown) Huether in Fort Ord, CA while Arnie was in the Army. He received commendations for his service within the finance and accounting office; he was also awarded sharpshooter merits. Son Aaron was born in Baker, MT after his father’s honorable discharge and thereafter, Arnie’s lifelong career in banking continued. He attained the positions of CEO and CFO in several banks in Montana, North and South Dakota. He was an excellent boss and manager of people, known for fair leadership and humor. In August of 1986, he married Rita (Emly) Huether and they hosted several foreign exchange daughters from England, Norway and Germany, who remain close. Arnie and Rita enjoyed traveling numerous foreign countries together as well as cruises, near and far. They enjoyed concerts, 4 wheel-

After retirement he and Rita became full-time RV’ers traveling the USA, to every state with their yorkies for the next seven years. They became converted Texans settling in to live in Alamo, TX for the past 15 years in a community resort, where many winter Texans also come. They enjoy their many friends, socializing and work projects together. Arnie is survived by his loving wife, Rita. Two sons, Jason of TX and Aaron (Bing) Huether of WA. Brothers, Victor (Linda) Huether, David (Renee) Huether and Spencer (Roberta) Huether of SD/AZ, ND and MT. In addition to four nephews, two nieces and their families across the USA. Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, twin brothers and a sister in infancy. Arnie was laid to rest at RGV Veterans Cemetery in Texas.

Weather permitting, each store and house owner will be contacted and correct and proper numbers will be installed for $1.00 per building. . .Fallon County American Legion Post 35 is making considerable changes in the hall and club room. A large store room, lavatories, remodeled kitchen and stage will be completed in about two weeks.

At a meeting of approximately 80 persons interested in oil development in Montana in the Chamber of Commerce rooms in Miles City, they formed the Independent Oil Operators Assn. H. B. Wiley was chosen president. Chas. J. Russell, R. W. Russell, J. L. Barstow, M.D. Miller and H. R. Greeden attended from Baker. . .Natural gas supplies in Baker and Cabin Creek should be preserved for domestic use, making carbon black of no benefit to the state. . .The dance given by a committee of the Woman’s Club of Baker was a decided success. The dance was given for the purpose of raising money toward Fallon County’s quota for the Near East relief fund.

Baker Spartan Boys Parents’ Night By Jaelyn Quenzer and Erica Verke This year the Boys’ Senior Night was Jan. 28, at Baker High School with the game against the Bowman Bulldogs. There are four senior basketball players this year, Konner Flint son of Klint and Brenda Flint, Logan Graham son of Jason and Kelly Graham and Darin and Johnna Koenig, Nathan Hufford son of Kimberly and Chris Hufford, and Jory Miller son of Jonathan and Alissa Miller. We took the time to ask the senior players some questions this week regarding their last basketball season here at BHS. When Konner described his basketball season he said, “It hasn’t gone the way we wanted it so far, but I know we can turn it around.” He mentioned that basketball has influenced his life by making him work better with others and as a team. To get in the right mindset he likes to block everyone out and just listen to music. What Logan said about how his basketball season has been so far is “I feel like we have

of the Month February By Macy Varner been playing hard in all of our losses and I believe we can turn it around in the second half of the season.” Logan stated “It has influenced my life greatly and taught me the value of hard work.” He continued to say that to get into the right mindset he listens to music and really focuses on what is happening. Nathan said that he has been enjoying this season and it has been fun. “There has been a lot of running and it has made me a good team player,” is how he said basketball has influenced his life. Nathan explained how he gets
himself in the right mindset by “Dressing out for each game, waiting for the coach to come and remind us of the skills we need to play.” The final senior, Jory, said that the season is not going as planned, but they can change the outcome at Districts. When describing how basketball influenced his life he said “Basketball has influenced my life by helping fuel my competitiveness in other aspects of my life.” He mostly enjoys listening to music and thinking about the game to get in the correct mindset.
The following students were chosen as “Spartan of the Month” for this February. All students were chosen by their teachers for portraying admirable qualities as Baker Spartans.
High School
The High School Spartan of the Month was picked by Mr. Hoversland. He chose Gabriella Qualley because of her continual help. Gabriella helps anyone who needs it, is willing to jump and test her limits, and is kind to all.
Middle School
The Middle School Spartan of the Month is Kane Olson. Kane was picked by Mr. Roelfsema because of his great attitude. Kane is mature and always ready to lend a helping hand.

This last weekend marked the end of the Montana State Speech and Drama Tournament. The virtual season came to a close after many new trials for the Spartans. For the three seniors, they had to adapt to performing online, where previously they always competed in front of a crowd. The team had to work through the difficulties that came with online tourna-
ments, several pertaining to the website that the meets were held through. Thankfully, the two new members, both freshmen, were able to slowly accustom themselves to performing in front of a group in a way in which they have never done before. Mrs. Smith’s sixth grade class has been studying Ancient Egypt in their history class. The students were tasked with creating a poster to display what they learned through their studies. Each student created their own poster with five facts about Egypt. One of the facts had to be written in hieroglyphics. The students then added some final touches to their posters with a few decorations. They enjoyed learning about Egypt and working on their posters.

Lady varsity basketball By Jaeda Paul January 26, the Plevna Lady Cougars faced off against the Broadus Lady Hawks. After a tough game, Broadus took the win with the scoreboard reading 31 to 48. Chloe Tudor was high scorer with 10 points. Sophia Tudor and Jenna Paul both added 5 points, Jaeda Paul sunk 4 points, Hayden Lane put in 3 points, and Jaiden Dulin and Sophia Schumacher both added 2 points to the score. The Lady Cougars traveled
Ekalaka to take on the Lady Bulldogs on Jan. 29. Sophia Tudor scored the highest with 7, Jaeda Paul behind her with 6, Chloe Tudor added 4, Jenna Paul and Hayden Lane had 2, and Dacy Buerkle had 1 point, leaving the game 64 to 22. The Custer-Hysham Lady Rebels came to Plevna for an exciting game, with a final score of 35 to 20. Mrs. Benner’s third grade class has been learning about making observations. To learn more about observations, the students traveled to Mrs. Schumacher’s biology class to learn about how to make qualitative and quantitative measurements. Before they began, the students watched a short video on what an owl pellet is and went over safety precautions. Third graders were also tasked with identifying the parts of a vole’s skeleton, since this is what they would hopefully find

Sixth grade presentations on Egypt
Boys’ JV basketball January 26, the Plevna Cougars traveled to Broadus to take on the Hawks as the first game of the evening. Broadus won the game 48 to 55 after the exciting game. The high scorer of the game was Cooper Peterson with a whopping 14 points. Caiden Gray followed closely behind with 11 points, Tristan Buerkle added 7 points, Kalob Bollinger put in 5 points, Ethan Mellon sunk 3 points, and Nick Buerkle, Trae Oberlander, Wyatt Thielen, and Brentan Beyers all added 2 points to the score. The Cougars met the Ekalaka Bulldogs in Ekalaka on Jan. 29, for a riveting game! The final score ended with a loss 47 to 32. in their pellets. After measuring the length, width, and mass of their pellets, third grade students were given probes and tweezers to explore the components of the pellet. Beneath all of the fur and hair, students were able to find skulls, fore limbs, vertebrates, and even the scapula of the owl’s last meal. Third graders placed any bones they found in a petri dish that Mrs. Schumacher and the biology students would help clean off with hydrogen peroxide. The third grade class had a blast learning about owl pellets and getting to “act like scientists”.

Chemistry moles By Chloe Tudor
The junior chemistry class have been learning about moles, and not the ones with hair! On Jan. 27, various tasks were conducted and the students were able to find the unit of weight using the mole equation (6.02 x 10^23). “Mole” helps in finding the weight of very small objects or amounts of elements/chemical bonds. The class particularly enjoyed learning how much
chalk is used in order to write their name on a piece of paper. Through summing the different element’s mass in chalk (CaCO3)-this can be found using the periodic table- they were able to find how many grams are in one mole of chalk: 100. Using this number, they multiplied it with the equation for a mole, and then moved the decimal placing over. The class looks forward to more of Mrs. Schumacher’s hands on activities and fun classwork!

Beneficiary has declared the grantors in default of the terms of the Deed of Trust and the promissory note (“Note”) secured by the Deed of Trust because of Grantors’ failure to timely pay all monthly installments of principal, interest, and, if applicable, escrow reserves for taxes and/or insurance as required by the Note and Deed of Trust. According to the Beneficiary, the obligation evidenced by the Note is now due for the Nov. 1, 2019 installment payment. As of Jan. 21, 2021, the amount necessary to satisfy this obligation was $111,970.67. This amount includes the outstanding principal balance of $97,062.21, plus accrued interest, accrued late charges, accrued escrow installments for insurance and/or taxes (if any), and advances for the protection of the beneficiary’s security interest (if any). Due to the default stated above, Beneficiary has elected, and has directed the Successor Trustee, to sell the above-described property to satisfy the obligation. The sale is a public sale and any person, including the beneficiary, excepting only the trustee, may bid at the sale. The bid price must be paid immediately upon the close of bidding in cash or cash equivalents (valid money orders, certified checks or cashier’s checks). The conveyance will be made by Trustee’s Deed without any representation or warranty, including warranties of title or possession, express or implied, as the sale is made strictly on an as-is, where-is basis, without limitation, the sale being made subject to all existing conditions, if any, of lead paint, mold or other environmental or health hazards. The sale is subject to bankruptcy filing, payoff, reinstatement, or other circumstance that affects the validity of the sale. If the sale is set aside or the trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of funds paid to the successor trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The purchaser shall be entitled to possession of the property on the 10th day following the sale. The scheduled Trustee’s Sale may be postponed by public proclamation up to 15 days for any reason, and in the event of a bankruptcy filing or other court-ordered stay, the sale may be postponed by the trustee for up to 120 days by public proclamation at least every 30 days. The grantors, the successor-in-interest to the grantors, or any other person having an interest in the aforesaid property, at any time prior to the trustee’s sale, may pay to the present beneficiary the entire amount then due under the Deed of Trust and the obligation secured thereby (including costs and expenses actually incurred and attorney’s fees) other
