‘Cattlewoman of the Year’ Fallon County rancher receives title

She was named Montana Cattlewoman of the Year on Dec. 11 in Billings. “It was definitely a surprise,” the current president of the American National Cattlewomen explained. “I went to the awards session and they called my name. I was totally shocked,” she said, noting it was the first time the Montana Cattlewomen organization had given the award. Pinnow has lived in the area all of her life and has been involved with the Baker CowBelles since the 1990s. “I have been really busy (with the national group),” she said, noting that her term as president of the group will end in February. But she knows who was responsible for the December surprise in Billings, she said. “It is because the Baker CowBelles nominated me for this position, it is the reason I got it. They wrote letters explaining why they thought I should win the award,” she said. The letters focused on what she had been doing for the Montana Cattlewomen and the Baker CowBelles, according to Pinnow. A longtime secretary/treasurer for the Baker CowBelles, she said that she only found out about the state award when they called her name at the awards ceremony.

he Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame proudly announces the honorees for induction on the fifteenth anniversary of this prestigious organization. Local inductees to the Hall of Fame include:

Photo courtesy of Connie Ahlgren, Montana Cattlewomen “As president of the American National Cattlewomen, I have traveled to 15 states and I have helped put on a WIRED (Women In Ranching Education Development) event in Billings for the Montana Cattlewomen. It was a hands-on educational symposium for women and young collegians. It was a full-day thing at the Miller Horse Palace in Laurel (Yellowstone County). We had a whole day of education. We started with some classroom

education, how to mix a live vaccine, the proper mixing of a live vaccine and the proper storage of a live vaccine. We also learned about what certain medicines are for, where to give the medicine, the proper way of giving the medicine to the livestock. “It included hands-on chute education, the proper way to get cattle down the alleyway and into a chute and the proper way of setting up your alleyway,” she explained. The

group at the event was also shown the way to get cattle into the corner gate with no yelling or talking. “Just by walking slowly towards them,” she explained. “It was one of our exercises.” In addition, the event provided education on the ways to properly perform branding, castration, vaccination and worming, along with the chute

Rising Ranch, Baker, MT Rising Ranch is a five generation, 115 year old ranch established in 1904 by Oscar and Martha Keener. Oscar and Martha ventured west from Wisconsin and homesteaded what is now Rising Ranch. Rising Ranch is located in southeast Montana 20 miles north of Baker on Highway 7 along Ash Creek. Oscar and Martha farmed, raised sheep and cattle. In 1919 they adopted Pauline (Stroup) Keener (19161996). In 1941 Pauline married Murray Melcher (19132005). At this time Pauline and Murray took over operation of the ranch and established the first Black Angus cattle herd in southeastern Montana. Pauline and Murray raised sheep and worked hard establishing their herd of Black Angus cattle. Pauline was a charter member of the Baker CowBelles and held numerous offices in the state and national organization. Murray and Pauline

loved lambing, horses and watching their herd of cattle prosper. In June of 1944, Linda was born. Her love of animals has kept her working the ranch her entire life. In November, 1963, Linda married Ralph Rising (19342018). Together, Ralph and Linda built the cattle herd with Murray and Pauline. In 1980, Ralph and Linda took over operation of the ranch. In 1969, Ralph and Linda adopted Pete (Nistler) Rising. Since 2012, Pete and his wife Carol now live and work on the ranch. In 2018 Pete and Carol took over operation of the ranch. They have two sons, Wyatt and Morgan. After completing college, Wyatt has returned to the ranch to partner with Pete and continue the tradition. Morgan is currently in college and has aspirations to return to the ranch as well. The family is still raising Black Angus cattle, horses and enjoying the agriculture way of life. Pete, Wyatt and Morgan are past members of the National High School Rodeo Association and competed at nationals, current or past members of the PRCA, NIRA, NRA, & NDRA. The entire family has enjoyed

Her doctors estimate she still has about four more weeks to spend in the NICU before being able to come home to Baker. . .O’Fallon Community mixed Men’s and Woman’s Choir will begin rehearsal Jan. 4 for the annual Americanism program. . .A Range Workshop will be held Jan. 13 at Thee Garage. It is being sponsored by LBCD and NRCS. . .The City approved the second reading and the adoption of ordinance #343, an ordinance to prohibit the parking of certain types of trucks in residential areas within the City of Baker. . .Kendall Shepherd won the giant Girl M & M filled with goodies from Reynolds Market, Will Rost was the winner of the giant Boy M & M filled with goodies.

A workshop belonging to Fritz Goerndt burned Jan. 4. Goerndt estimates the contents of the building to be worth approximately $40,000. The workshop and its contents were considered a total loss. . .Don Schillinger has been named 1999 Class B Football Coach of the Year by the Montana High School Association. His 200th win was the 1999 homecoming game with a score of 51-0 over Shepherd. Mayor Kelly Coldwell proclaimed Oct. 1,

The little miss has been named Lacey LeAnn and weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. . .Saturday evening Marion and Harry Hanson were surprised with a housewarming. Friends walked in with a carry-in supper. Joan Mengel was presented with the DAR award at an assembly as school closed for the break at Christmas. . .Midland, Inc. in Baker was destroyed for the third time by fire Dec. 24. It had burned to the ground in 1916 and gutted by fire another time. Plans are being made to rebuild as soon as weather permits. . .Durhamel Broadcasting Enterprises of Lead-Deadwood, South Dakota TV stations announced today that a new tower with 3,000,000 watts of power will be beaming television signals into the Baker area.

Kenneth Rustad has been selected by the Montana Association of County Commissioners as one of a group to meet in Helena in January in connection with the land reclassification program. . .“A Journey to Bethlehem”, a Christmas Cantata, was presented by Rev. Charles Segestrom and 22 members of the First Baptist Church.

Thursday, Jan. 5, 1950 --

The City of Baker was served notice this week that Roy Mengel, through his attorneys Colgrove and Farr of Miles City, has brought suit for $25,550 for damages incurred through the creek at Mengel’s farm west of Baker. . .At the council meeting Tuesday night, the city administration granted Fallon Post No. 35 of the American Legion a license to operate a

club. The Post has partitioned off a section of the hall to be used as a club room for members.

80 YEARS AGO Thursday, Jan. 4, 1940 --

The Rev. W. R. Milam of Phoenix, AZ, arrived Wednesday to assume charge of the Baker Baptist Church. He was accompanied by his daughter Marvel, a senior in high school, and they are living for the present in the Jesperson residence north of the Catholic Church. . .Private Herbert E. Bechtold, son of Edward Bechtold of Plevna, has recently been transferred to Battery C, 5th Artillery, 1st Defense Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, Marine Corps Base, San Diego, CA, for duty. . .It is reported that 50 in Fallon County took out their liquor licenses while 96 driver’s licenses were issued and 46 motor vehicle licenses, but no wedding licenses. . .The first New Year baby reported is a son to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hepperle of Plevna. . .Don’t overlook the coffee special at the Baker Meat Co., 4 lbs. Schilling for $1.00, also pork steak, 2 lbs. - 25 cents, while boiling beef sells at 7 lbs. $1.00.

After a tentative consideration of almost two years, the directors of the Bank of Baker decided to change the upper floor of the bank building into business offices. The increased demand for office space by the oil and gas companies coupled with the dam-

aging effects of large crowds assembled in the hall for numerous dances, forced the directors to make the change. The directors regret that they are forced to make this move as the Masonic Lodge and other fraternal organizations were faithful tenants. There is now more than ever a crying need for a community hall in Baker. . .Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Dougherty entertained Friday evening in honor of their son. Dr. A. M. Dougherty, who left the same night for New York where he will take a postgraduate course.

100 YEARS AGO Thursday, Jan. 1, 1920 --

The National Tuberculosis Association is about to launch another drive for better health which will cover a period of 15 weeks beginning Jan. 1. The work will be under the supervision of the Junior Red Cross in this county and will be carried into every school. . .It has been the custom of Lew Jim for many years at Christmas time to remember his many friends with substantial gifts. This Christmas a number of citizens got together and gave Lew Jim a handsome gold watch and chain. To say that Lew Jim was pleased is putting it mildly, he was delighted. . .Judge Dousman has appointed Clarence Phillips probation officer for Fallon County. It will be his duty to investigate all cases of juvenile delinquency. . .The Baker State Bank has installed a dictaphone outfit which will be a great convenience in handling their correspondence.

pand the number of people involved at every level, from the local CowBelles, to the state cattlewomen and the national organization, Pinnow stressed. “We need more members because we are getting so sparse that we can not do it all. We need people to realize the importance of being a member of the Montana Cattlewomen. That is my most important thing. Our CowBelles have only 20 members and we have way more ranchers in Fallon County than that. We need more women to help spread the education. Even though we are a ranching and farming community in Montana, there are still so many kids that don’t understand all of the byproducts that come from beef and all of the important things that come when you have beef in your diet,” Pinnow said. “There is only so many of us and we are spread so thin. We need more members. They need to realize what we do and how important it is to be a member to help do that,” she added. The Montana Cattlewomen and other groups have also provided resources online for the public and teachers to use in the classroom, Pinnow explained, noting that the Montana Department of Agriculture is just one of the resources available to the public and teachers. In addition, there are a number of videos on YouTube about agriculture in Montana, along with a variety of state and regional websites.

“We take it to our heart and soul that these cattle are going to be raised in a good safe environment because we want to produce a good and safe wholesome product - beef,” she explained. She admits that ranchers need to educate the public, noting there is a bill currently in the U.S. Senate about factory farms. “It is a presidential candidate who is putting this bill forward. He thinks if you own over a hundred head of cattle, he wants to label us as a factory farm,” she said, noting that the candidate has been offered opportunities to come out to see an active ranch, but has declined the opportunity so far. Christmas Stations O n Dec. 20, Mrs. Schumacher, advisor, and the Plevna Student Council helped set up and operate four Christmas stations for the elementary students. Mrs. Phelps created an obstacle course as a challenge for the students in the gym to work their way through. Mrs. Robertus, advisor, and the FCCLA members had a cookie decorating station. They had the cookies already baked and ready

to decorate. Ms. Boyer presented an ornament crafting activity for the students. In the multi-purpose room, the Plevna Student Council students had some winter carnival games to play. Once they finished with that, they could visit Mrs. Wagnon and create holiday cards. The students had a fun Christmas activity day thanks to Mrs. Schumacher and her Student Council members.

montanaprorodeo.org The Montana Pro Rodeo Hall & Wall of Fame is an organization made up entirely of volunteers from various walks of life. This organization is dedicated to honoring Montana professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls who exemplify our Montana western heritage. In the past fifteen years, scholarships have been provided to over 179 students totaling $537,000.00 in award money. MPRHWF has become the largest sponsor of high school rodeo scholarships in the nation. Most awards are $3,000, dispersed over the first two years of college. The student recipients are selected by the Montana High School Rodeo Association, based on scholastic ability, rodeo participation, community involvement, strength of character, and need. The Montana Pro Rodeo Hall & Wall of Fame organization hosts a banquet on the last Saturday of January. At the banquet we award our “Rodeo Legends”, ”Great Montana Ranches”, “Great Montana Families”, and “Western Heritage” honorees. The banquet and private donations are our primary fund raisers. We also raise funds through the sale of “Brand Blocks”, twelveinch square pieces of granite with the sponsor’s name,

hometown, and registered Montana brand etched into its surface. The Brand Block is attached to the exterior wall of the Southeast corner of the Metra Building, to be kept and displayed in perpetuity. The MPRHWF commissioned and paid for the spectacular bronze statue of Dan Mortensen on Tee Box, erected at the Metra Park, in Billings, MT, to honor the seven-time Pro Rodeo World Champion Cowboy. The organization has also raised money to create our monument site - the “Wall of Fame” - an impressive brick wall, also at the Metra, to honor Montana’s Professional Rodeo participants with their names inscribed in granite as an everlasting memorial to Montana’s great Rodeo heroes and the Montana western lifestyle The MPRHWF has made it possible for many of Montana’s young people to get started down a path of education that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
