Moore competes in biggest derby of his career
It’s in his blood. When Neil Moore got the call this spring asking if he would be interested in being part of a team for a demolition derby in Las Vegas, NV in the fall he knew pretty quickly what the answer would be. His biggest dilemma was that the derby was during hunting season. There were 32 teams registered for this derby; 128 cars, their drivers from all across the United States and Canada. His team, named The Sleepers, was made up of Neil, a father and son duo, Jace and Trevor Rogers from Huntley Project, MT and Chantz Ogden
from central UT. After his already planned derbies were over for the summer, Neil, with the help of some friends and family from time to time, started stripping the Suicide Lincoln down to the body. He then installed his set-up from his stock of custom parts, from the engine, transmission, rear end, even the gas and brake pedals, seat and steering wheel. Many parts of the car frame and body can be reinforced and welded too, and many of these welds have very precise spots that need welded or
exact lengths they can be to be legal in the derby. The weekend before the derby, Neil painted his car their team colors, black and green, loaded the car, plenty of spare tires, repair parts and tools, a welder, cutting torch and much more in an enclosed trailer to make the 1,200 mile trip to Sin City for the derby. The cars had to be checked in by Tuesday evening. Inspection started at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and The Sleepers, being in the first heat was the first team to be inspected. They had two hours from the time their initial inspection was finished to complete all the changes required on their list. Changes were as minimal as a weld being too long, something bolted in the wrong place, plastic lights that got overlooked when the car was stripped to having to rebuild the safety cage because it was too close to the body of the car. The team got all their changes made and passed re-inspection within the time frame and then were not allowed to work on their cars again before the derby started. The Sin City Showdown started the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 14. The Sleepers won their first heat against an all girls team, made up of girls from North Dakota and Arkansas. The last team with a car that still has a flag up wins. The Sleepers had three cars drive out of the arena after their heat. Thirteen more heats followed that evening. They were not allowed to work on their cars after their heats, they had from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday to work on their cars to get them ready for the next round. This derby is not run like most derbies around here. Usually, if you win your heat, you go to the championship heat. In this derby there were so many teams that they ran two brackets. The winners from Thursday came back on Friday against two or three other winning teams. It was the same for the losers side of the bracket. The teams that won both heats, moved

Baker City Council denies conditional use permit By Brad Mosher

The unanimous denial of a conditional use permit request Monday has proposed developer George Bailey looking for another possibility. “We are just stymied,” Bailey said after the public hearing concluded. “We’ll investigate it. We, as a group, have to determine how we can move forward and probably investigate having our annexation and zoning rescinded. Then we can start from scratch. We were just getting caught up in the Catch-22,” he said. “I wasn’t here (when it started) but we bought into the project and we are dealing with the way the project is. “Our goal was to put in
some really high-quality living opportunities before the people of Baker,” he said. “We’ll figure it out. “If there was a way to … redo it, we would do it. But, I would think from what we heard from Forrest (Sanderson), the best thing would be to de-annex and get ourselves removed from the city. Then we could start all over with the process, or sell our land – whatever happens,” he added. The challenges are still how do you conform and how do you get it done, Bailey explained. “It is nobody’s fault. It is just a complex situation that we have to investigate,” the former Plevna School superintendent said. “I love it here,” Bailey, who currently is living in St. Regis, said.
Council denies permit The Baker City Council unanimously denied the request for a conditional use permit by Bailey, who is the managing member of the Eagle Landing RV Park. The property involved included 26.7 acres. He was requesting a conditional use permit to establish a new 14 space recreational vehicle park with an office/ washroom facility. According to Bailey, the purpose of the project was to meet the short-term residential needs of visiting construction workers and season hunters. “A lot of the people that do the construction phase of the pipeline live in RVs during the period of time that they are here (in Baker). Consequently, all of the existing spaces were taken,” he
explained to the board. Bailey said that there was slightly more than one acre which could be used for RV parking. “It was unoccupied. Technically, I thought we could have put 30 sites there.” According to Kevin Dukart, the city’s zoning administrator, the project had eight areas of non-compliance which needed to be addressed by Bailey for the project. The property involved is currently zoned as R-4, Dukart explained. It was part of a preliminary approved phased subdivision. “The tract is currently zoned Residential 4 which permits single family attached and multi-family dwellings. The current use zoning of the properties east, west and south of the prop-
erty are zoned R-2 attached dwellings, or agriculture. To the north, is general commercial,” Dukart said. Dukart referred the conditional use permit to the city council. The zoning administrator explained that the conditional use permit application did not sufficiently conform to conditional use criteria. Dukart cited a dozen shortcomings, including not conforming to Fallon County growth policies, not conforming to 25-foot setback guidelines, not conforming to a 50-foot access to a public right of way, adverse issues regarding the developers ability to complete the subdivision due to the R-4 and R-2 zoned designation, absence of a plan to extend Kimball Avenue, absence of a lighting
plan, absence of a plan for improvements on 6th Street West regarding curbs, gutters and sidewalks, absence of extension of the public water main and the absence of a design plan to provide fire hydrant services to the development, absence of a drainage analysis, departure from the public meeting statement denying the recreational vehicle plan use for the subdivision and non-conformance with the proposal to findings of fact. “The zoning administrator recommends denial,” Dukart told the council. McClain Park lights up with Holiday Cheer

McClain Park in Baker was lit up with the magic of Christmas on Saturday, November 23 as the City of Baker held the Lighting of the Park. Fallon County residents gathered together to get into the spirit of the season. The time was spent wandering the illuminated park and enjoying Christmas music sung by the Community Choir. In between enjoying hot chocolate served by the Boy Scouts and going on a Christmas wagon ride, kids kept entertained by playing in the park. On the way to get hot chocolate, people passed through the Clayton Hornung Memorial Bridge, decorated with Christmas cheer. On the other side of the bridge, people were kept warm by a barrel fire and warm refreshments as they laughed and exchanged stories. If you kept your eyes peeled, you could even see one of Santa’s little elves scurrying about collecting wishful letters to deliver back to Santa. Mayor JoDee Pratt, who helped to spearhead this event, was thrilled with the turnout, “I was so happy,” she gushed. Mayor Pratt intends to keep this tradition alive in Baker, although she hopes that as the community members settle into the tradition, more businesses, organizations, and individuals will take part in decorating the park, lighting it up a little brighter each and every year with holiday spirit.

Two Baker families lost homes in separate fires. Tuesday morning the Baker volunteer firemen were called to the Howard Celander home. The fire, which started by unknown causes, gutted the house and left only the walls standing. About 11:30 a.m. Wednesday the fire siren sounded again and firemen were summoned to the Bill Randash home. It was thought at this time that the wood beside the fireplace had somehow caught on fire which spread flame’s throughout the north side of the house. . .Boy Scouts will be starting their Christmas tree sales Saturday morning. . .Community Choir will present their concert Sunday at 2 p.m. The 42 members are directed by Juelie McLean. . .Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Women of America Awards program announced that Sharon Rae Nordahl has been selected for inclusion in the 1979 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. . .Rev. and Mrs. Gerry Bass and children Angela and Gerry Lee have moved to Fairfield where they have accepted the pastorate of the Fairfield Assembly of God Church. . .John Deere Farming Frontier Day will be held Dec. 7 at the Fallon County fairgrounds exhibit hall. . .Special recognition has been given to several members of the Dickinson State College cross country team which placed second in the NDCAC conference meet recently. The program featured a concert choir, a select choir and a folk group, two piano solos, the stage band and concert band. . .The Baker Chamber of Commerce has announced the beginning of the annual Christmas opening to begin Monday. . .More than 94 percent of the parents attended conferences in the Baker elementary schools. . .Pete Molenda of the Mountain Bell Company explained to the City Council a plan to lay 761 feet of underground ca-

could be handled. “Fire hydrants? We definitely would want some fire hydrants. If there was a need for more, we would definitely address that,” he said. “We definitely want to have lights in there for the people.” Bailey also stressed that the community still needs RV spaces for people coming to Baker to work on proposed construction projects. “They’ll need a place to live or we’ll force them into neighboring areas. It would also increase the city’s tax base.” Public comment During public comment, the council listened to several proponents, several local residents speaking against the permit being granted as well as one saying he was neutral about the permit, but had questions about how it would impact the community planning procedures. One opponent said that whether or not the construction workers and others come to Baker looking for RV spaces, once it would be built, it would not go away. “There are a lot of people over there on 6th Street that do not want that. They don’t want it as neighbors. They don’t want it to bring down property values,” he said. According to Cody Strandbakke, the RV park will bring people in who are not conducive to raising families. Anna Straub felt there were several shortcomings to the project. “I haven’t seen a map. R-4 housing should stay that way,” she told the council. “It sounds like there are a lot of issues in non-conformance. I ask the board to deny the petition.” Others cited increased traffic on the residential street and the project just being a temporary solution which will drive down property values. Sanderson, a senior planner at KLJ Engineering and the city’s subdivision administrator, spent more than 20 minutes explaining some of

He also cited a public statement by the owner that specifically said they would not be building an RV Park. He questioned if the original project would have received approval if it had mentioned RV Park in the initial paperwork. “We will never know that answer,” Sanderson said. He also said the subdivision’s phases one, two and three were off the table because of the change to an RV Park. “That’s fine, but what happens to the interconnecting roads, the water system, the sewer system and the traffic patterns,” Sanderson said. “The compatibility is all part of subdivision review and approval.” In addition, approval of the conditional use permit could put the city and the developer in a position where they no longer adhere to the binding contract that is subdivision approval for the project. “Therefore, the conclusion would have to be arrived at that the approvals are void,” he added.

the problems and unintentional impacts the city would face if they approved the conditional use permit. He brought maps of the subdivision. “What it shows is the master plan that was approved by the city council encompasses all of the R-4s which runs along 6th,” he said. “I am presenting as a neutral party. It matters not to me one way or the other how you decide on the land use issue. What matters to me is the fact that this is a major subdivision and it holds an approval. That approval has some 15 years remaining. “For the life of me, I do not know how I could file a final plat when the proposal before you (the council) this evening for a subdivision has never been through preliminary plat. Santa will be making a pit stop in Marmarth, North Dakota on Saturday, December 7th for the annual Santa Claus Days event, hosted by the Marmarth Ambulance Service, the Marmarth Community Club, and the City of Marmarth. The doors to the Marmarth Community Center will open at 10 A.M. where you
will find vendors to help you check things off your Christmas shopping list. Along with vendors, various businesses in Marmarth donated turkeys to be given away every hour on the hour. The Marmarth Ambulance Service will be serving a free will donation lunch of chili and hot dogs, one of their most important fund raisers of the year.
Santa isn’t scheduled to arrive until 2 P.M., but Santa’s helpers in the Marmarth Community Club have some kid’s activities up their sleeves beginning at noon to keep the little ones busy until Chris Kringle’s sleigh pulls into town. Jean Tennant, 86
Jean Tennant was born February 7, 1933 in Miles City, Montana to Charles and Gladys Miller; she was the eldest of two children. A graduate of Custer County High School and Western Montana College, Jean taught elementary school for two years at the Sunshine Country School north of Terry, Montana; three years in the Glendive Public Schools; and 23 years at the Plevna grade school. Jean cared deeply about her students and fulfilled her responsibility as an educator with seriousness, commitment, and dedication. Retiring from teaching in 1999, Jean moved to the family farm in Miles City where she lived for 14 years. In 2013 she moved to Big Timber, Montana to be near her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. With her children at her side, she passed away in her apartment at Boulder Meadows Assisted Living on November 23, 2019 from complications due to kidney failure. Jean was a life-long learner who loved to read, take continuing-education courses, and explore the world on her computer. Her natural curiosity and love of learning expressed itself in her passion for travel: 23 years of road trips to Plevna ball games, 24 different states explored on summer road trips
with her son and daughterin-law, a dream cruise of the Hawaiian Islands escorted by her daughter-in-law, and countless day trips exploring the backcountry of central Montana with her daughter and son-in-law. Jean was an excellent cook, who loved to hunt for new recipes on the internet, as well as being an accomplished seamstress. Music and dancing were dear to her heart, and she could always be counted on to kick up her heals to “In the Mood.” Above all, Jean was a loving and supportive mother who lived for family gatherings: she treasured playing pinochle with her children, in-laws, and friends; celebrating holidays with immediate and extended family; and, most of all, participating in countless conversations around the dinner table. A strong, tough, resilient woman, one of Jean’s greatest

She is survived by her son Kevin Tennant and wife Nancy of Las Vegas, Nevada; her daughter Lori Wheeler and husband Rick of Big Timber, Montana; grandsons Brean and Brendon Tennant of Las Vegas; grandson Colten Wheeler and his wife Ayde of Bozeman, Montana; and granddaughter Hannah Wheeler of Missoula, Montana. She is also survived by her brother Ray Miller and wife Jan of Miles City, Montana, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. A public viewing with the family will take place at Stevenson and Sons in Miles City on Friday, November 29, 2019, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A celebration of her life will be held at Stevenson and Sons at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 30, 2019, with a reception at the Parlor immediately after the celebration. Services will conclude with burial in the family gravesite at Custer County Cemetery at 4:00 pm. Jean’s favorite colors were pink and purple, so everyone attending the celebration is encouraged to wear pink and purple in honor of he

Mrs. Oberlander’s second graders have mealworms and made habitats for their tiny critters. The habitat was made by grabbing a plastic sandwich container and poking holes in it, then throwing
in a pinch of oats. After that, they cut an apple into quarters and put one quarter in so the larvae had moisture, as well as having food. After they grow to about two inches long, the students will take them out of the container, and then the mealworms will be-
gin to turn into adult beetles. It takes about two months, ten weeks for them to develop from start to finish, but you have to make sure they have fresh apples and good oatmeal! Mealworms are the larvae form of the mealworm beetle, and have four life stages; egg, larvae, pupa and adult mealworm. Mealworms are the jack-of-all-trades, edible in almost all forms; eat them raw and alive, or pan-fried, but dry-roasting is deemed the tastiest!

On Oct. 25, second and third graders helped clean out the raised beds in the school courtyard. Jenna Paul, Dacy Buerkle and Mrs. Menees directed the students on what to pull. It took some muscle to tear out most of the plants, but they still had fun! Now the courtyard is ready for spring planting.

The Heart of Baker By Lena Kennel
Normally, Baker’s High School’s NHS chapter performs acts of community service in ways such as clearing trash from the ditches just outside of town, making visits to Superior Care Villa and donating proceeds from cake raffles to various causes. This year however, they found a way to get all of Baker’s students involved by participating in Whip Pediatric Cancer’s “Heart of Gold” program, with the goal to raise money for pediatric cancer research at Memorial
Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. For this fundraiser, each student was asked to decorate a golden heart made of cardstock and then return it with an optional donation. Lincoln and Longfellow students have already received and returned their decorated hearts and the high school students will be turning in their own contributions on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The hearts will then be displayed on the walls in each school to showcase Baker’s “Heart of Gold.”

On Nov. 12, the 7th grade girls basketball team traveled to Beach,ND, to play the Buccaneers. The Spartans were able to start out quick in the game against the Buccaneers and were able to score 12 points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Spartans were able to score 14 points. They scored 6 points
in the third quarter and 6 more points in the fourth, compared to Beach’s 11 points total. However, the Buccaneers were playing with only five girls the entire game. November 16 was a successful day for the Baker Speech and Drama Team. The members woke up early Saturday morning in order to travel to their meet in Glendive. This was the third meet of the season and most participants are getting a firm grip on their pieces and working out any kinks. Some, like Rachel Rost and Caleb Rost, are finally ready to start competing. The sibling duo managed to place 2nd in Classical Theater. Bryce Shelhamer received 6th in Dramatic Oral Interpretation, and Cayla Duke placed 4th. Skylar Wall and Jolyn Rost took 2nd in Dramatic Duo, and Olivia Gunderson placed 4th in Humorous Solo. Hannah Goerndt received 1st in Dramatic Solo and Jalynn Hanes also took 1st in Pantomime. Zachery Craig placed 7th in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Overall the team scored 4th in Speech Sweeps and 2nd in Drama Sweeps.

The drama students placed first overall, with Caleb Rost and Rachel Rost placing 1st in Classical Duo; Hannah Goerndt placing 2nd in Dramatic Solo; Jalynn Hanes placing 1st in Mime; Skylar Wall and Cayla Duke 2nd in Dramatic Duo; Olivia Gunderson 3rd in Humorous Solo. This assignment was a funfilled, delicious break from these students’ typical load of classwork!

Xi Alpha Nu holds a successful Holiday Bazaar By Shannon Johnson
On Sunday, November 24th Xi Alpha Nu, a nonprofit organization in Fallon County, held their annual Holiday Bazaar at Baker High School. The doors opened at 10 A.M. as community members steadily poured in out throughout the day until it closed at 3:30 P.M. This year the bazaar had plenty of vendors with a total of sixty-two different display tables for those attending to browse through and get some of their holiday shopping taken care of. The vendors expressed that they were pleased with the turnout of the event. The vendors weren’t the only ones who
were satisfied with the bazaar. The shoppers appreciated the variety that the event had to offer, boasting plenty of new vendors this year. A fundraising lunch of turkey sandwiches, spartan tacos, and knoephla soup, and miscellaneous snacks was served by the close-up students. Xi Alpha Nu also had a fundraising bucket available for the Fallon County Community Fund, a fund that gives back to the community by offering collected funds to families in times of tragedies and medical illnesses.
Power strips & space heaters The Baker Fire Dept. would like to remind the public to be careful with power strips and space heaters. As the temperature drops you will feel the need to crank up the heat. You should never plug a space heater into a power strip, these units are not designed to handle the high current flow needed for a space heater and can overheat or even catch fire due to the added energy flow. Make sure to always plug directly into the wall outlet and never use extension cords. A heater must have at least a minimum of three feet of space around the heater. With the holiday season upon us, never overload electrical outlets when putting up Christmas lights and christmas tree lights. Nearly half of all home heating fires occurred in December, January
and Febuary, the NFPA said, space heaters, whether portable or stationary, accounted for two of every five home heating fires. The Baker Fire Department wants everyone to have a safe and happy holiday.

The Sleepers’ second heat had two other teams, one from California and one comprised of guys from Canada and South Dakota. Since this heat only had three teams, they only took one team to the championship. The South Dakota/Canada team was out and Neil was the last car from his team running. The team from California had three cars running and the odds were stacked against Neil. In an attempt to possibly be able to take his car into the grudge match and earn a spot in the championship heat, Neil pulled his flag and ended the heat. The drivers and pit crew had from the finish of the last heat Friday night until 10 p.m. and from 7 a.m - 10 a.m. on Saturday to work on their cars. Neil got his car ready Friday night, the others on his team did some work on theirs Saturday morning also. The grudge heats started at 11 a.m. on Saturday, The Sleepers were in the second heat. The Grudge didn’t go well for Neil. The dirt conditions in the arena weren’t good all weekend, it went from too dry to too wet. The dirt didn’t pack down so when the car’s powerful engines would spin the tires, they would dig huge holes in the dirt almost immediately. Neil got high centered on a hump in the arena when he pulled in and his teammates did not recognize that he was stuck until his minute to make a hit had already passed and he had to pull his flag. Trevor did try to get Neil out and in his attempt, he too became stuck right beside his team-
mate. Jace and Chantz were able to get in some great hits on some of the teams, but in the end, all four of The Sleepers were stuck in The Bermuda Triangle on the track. They all went in and never came out. Championship heats ran that evening with a team from Pennsylvania and a team with drivers from Minnesota, Canada and Utah winning the Grand Prize of $30,000 per team. Neil had a great pit crew and cheering crowd come down to Las Vegas to help him with his car and cheer him on. When asked about the experience Neil said, “I

questioned myself when I was first asked to do this but after going down there and driving in the biggest derby of my 25 year career, I have no regrets. Any team that won a heat was invited to come back to the March 2021 team show, which I am considering. I really appreciate everyone who made the trek to Las Vegas to watch me and help in the pit, everyone who put time in our shop at home stripping and building the car and Baker Metal and Recycling and Spiffy’s for always sponsoring me. I’m grateful to my family for putting up with all the time it takes to build these cars.”
