The Cheesemakers may be young and small in number. But football coach Kye Johnson says the teams is improving every week. They’ll need that improvement as the Mooks prepare for the Cowapa League season. Cowapa rival Valley Catholic is the top-ranked 4A football team in the state, according to the Oregon School Activities Association football poll. The undefeated Valiants jumped on Douglas in the season opener for a 41-28 victory, then followed that with a runaway 53-7 win over YamhillCarlton. Valley Catholic is one of two league teams in the top 10. Scappoose is ranked ninth as of Sept. 15. Scappoose, with its 1-1 overall record made the cut after logging a 40-24 victory in the season home opener against New Westminister (British Columbia). They followed that with a 41-27 loss to 5A St. Helens. Banks, like Valley Catholic, got off to a 2-0 start with wins over Gladstone (35-14) and Stayton (62-16), but they are only ranked 17th in 4A poll. Astoria is off to a 1-1 start with a 3121 loss to fourth-ranked North Bend in the team’s season opener. The Fishermen picked up their first win with a narrow 49-42 victory over Gladstone. The Gulls also got off to a 1-1 start, losing the opener to North Marion (50-6) before knocking off 3A Clats-

kanie for Seaside’s first win (19-14). The Gulls are ranked 36th, just one place ahead of Tillamook. Tillamook is the only Cowapa team to get off to an 0-2 start, and is ranked 37th. Still, the Cheesemakers are hoping to get into playoff contention. “Our team has been there working hard at it every day and we’ll keep getting better. “It’s been a good team attitude all off-season and into camp. It feels like a good trajectory right now and we’ll have to work at keeping it high,” coach Johnson said as the season began. “We have some real potential there with guys like Rory Coon and Jaxsen and Mitchell Johnson along the defensive line. “It’s just a matter of continued reps and playing good assignment football with intensity. Which our guys are fully capable of doing,” the coach added.

Tillamook has jumped into one of the best volleyball teams in the state as its Cowapa League season begins. After sweeping its league opener with Banks, the Lady Cheesemakers were moved into second place on the 4A volleyball poll put out by the Oregon School Activities Association, behind only perpetual power Crook County. They are doing that on a team with just two seniors – co-captains Lexi Zuercher and Jordan Zweifel. Coach Meagan Moroney has five juniors and five sophomores on the squad. Two of the sophomores are the team’s tallest players, six-footers Makinley Johnson and Isabel Hurliman. One of the team’s biggest offensive threats, Makayla Hopke, is a junior. That may big problem for the other teams in the Cowapa League in coming years. The team already made a big impression on Cowapa rival Banks in the league opener. Tillamook swept the team in three games.

That is something that coach Moroney says she doesn’t remember happening before. Banks has one of the strongest programs in the league, she added. So far this season, only Sisters has found a way to beat the Lady Cheesemakers on the court. If that stays true and the Mooks survive the Cowapa gauntlet unscathed, they would earn not only a firstround bye when the

state playoffs start, but a home game to win a spot in the Elite Eight going to the state tournament. But first, Moroney and her team are focusing on their league rivals. Scappoose was ninth in the same poll where Tillamook took over the number two slot, while Valley Catholic was sixth. Banks even climbed from 14 to 12 on the list after the loss to Tillamook in the season

opener. One advantage the Cheesemakers have with the lopsided scores is the coach is able to send in players from the bench to develop more experience. The coach said she has a team that can hit offensively from almost anywhere on the court. That makes it hard for the opponents to defend against the Cheesemakers.

Youth big part of Mooks’ strength in Cross Country One thing is for sure, Pat Zweifel is loaded with youth. His Tillamook harriers only had two seniors running in the recent varsity 1A-4A races at the Ultimook cross country invitational hosted by Tillamook. Seth Martin and Arlo Bannon are the only seniors among the boys and girls varsity in those races. Yet, the girls varsity won the team crown with 58 points, beating Estacada (76) and Washougal (Wash.)

(102). Tillamook had no seniors in that race and still placed three runners among the top six finishers, led by Kara Putman, a junior, who finished second, behind the girl who has dominated the Cowapa League for years. Phoebe Brown, a junior, was fifth and freshman Whitney Averill came in sixth. Sophomores Allison Wilkes, Itzel Vasquez and Grace Blanchard, along with freshman Ruby Thompson.

In the boys varsity race, the Cheesemakers placed second as a team with 131 points and also were the first among Oregon teams. A team from Washougal in Washington won the race with a total of 86 team points. Junior Gabe Lachenmeier was the top Mook finisher, taking sixth, while Martin was tenth and sophomore Carter Kunert one place behind. Bannon, sophomore Josh Richards along with juniors Brendin Walker

Mooks kicking their way to top of Cowapa League Tillamook has a strong core of 12 seniors on the boys soccer team. After getting off to a 3-0 start, the Cheesemakers stumbled, dropping two road contests to the top two ranked 4A teams – Newport and La Grande. After coming home, they rediscovered winning and climbed back into the top 10 of the 4A OSAA soccer poll. That puts the team on par with Cowapa League

better,” he added. Lopes said he is very grateful that he has a lot of returnees from the 2015 squad which finished winless. “The incoming freshmen bring a good skill set with them because they have played together for a long time. With that, we have a good mix of returning talent and new talent. We can attack better than we did last year. “We are just waiting for that to come together and mature,” Lopes said. Tillamook senior Lidia Godinez scored the first goal of the season for the Lady Mooks, putting the shot in the net against Junction City with just under 22 minutes left in the game. That was a rarity last season for Tillamook’s girls soccer team. But this season, the Lady Mooks were able to score twice in the first four games of the season. According to Tillamook coach Chad Lopes, the girls squad has been working hard to build their skills for a run at their Cowapa League foes. “We got to work on passing more. We got to spread out a little more. We got to communicate with each other

the Pirates had played against the 3A Royals. “You did great. The kids did great. I loved the hard count,” one of Friday fans told Bennett. After he had a chance to review the game video, Bennett found out just how special the game was. In the first game of the season, senior Max Halverson had run for 330

yards on 45 carries. He had watched a freshman fill in at quarterback and run the offense. He’d watched his defense come up with several big plays to stop the bigger team cold. In one game, the team had shown they had self-respect and determination. After the game, Bennett told his

team to be angry about losing, but not about how they had played. “You never gave up. You came back,” he told the players. The people in the stands saw the same thing that night. And Bennett is hope both he and the fans will be seeing it every Friday night this season.

It was in the books as a loss, but new coach Chris Bennett looked at the scoreboard with a smile. That means the whole team will go through a learning curve, gaining experience and honing skills. The seniors on the Pirate squad are Cheyenne Spliethof, Kindness Hyde, Sam Noregaard, Sari Booth and Madi Chesnut.

Pirates’ harriers on the run for state meet berth Neah-Kah-Nie only has a few seniors, but they are focusing on making a run for the state meet later this year. It will be their last chance. Seniors Colby Hixson and Roan Childress led their teams to the finish line. Dylan Mitchell, Brady Haylett, Tyler Ernst and Willie Davidson rounded out the rest of the five boys that helped the Pirates place 16th as a team in the recent Ultimook invitational. Lady Cats hoping to scratch way into Northwest League title chase These Bobcats are young – at least to varsity experience. But they are learning. And volleyball coach Amy Elder is hoping that can come quickly enough to have an impact on the title race in the Northwest League this fall.

The Lady cats have four senior captains, Isabelle Bruce, Tea Chatelain, Morgan Kirkpatrick and Tiarra Thompson. They have two juniors (Carissa Albin and Becca Menefee), along with sophomores Lauren Siler, Danny Johnson, Scarlet Harrison

and Morgan North. Olivia Leslie is the lone freshman on the squad. Although the team got off to a 0-6 start, they are still close in the rankings to three Northwest League teams – Vernonia, City Christian and Neah-Kah-Nie.
