Experience a strength to Nighthawk football, says coach By Sheldon Christenson Adams County Record Coach Randy Burwick feels the strength of the Night Hawks is their experience. We have a lot of kids that started last year and will provide great leadership for the young guys. Our weakness is going to be depth at certain positions, thus we will be making sure that we have kids working to strengthen our depth. We have five new freshmen this year and one new sophomore playing this year and I feel they will all make a great contribution to our team. There are 26 players out which are good numbers. The best thing about them is that they have great attitudes and really want to win.
Assisting coach Burwick is Larry Tibor, Rob Warbis and Keith Jackson. After their first two games, a loss to Grant Co., 54-26, and a win over Beach, 38-28, it demonstrated two key areas. Their offense is potent with a solid running game with Juniors Brandon Pierce and Tanner Sanford and Freshman Isaiah Kludt leading the way. Junior Braxon Yates returns at the quarterback position. Their defense needs more work, especially in the secondary where they have been subject to getting burnt on long passes. The varsity Nighthawks finish 6th in Region 4 last year with a 3-5 record and 3-6 overall. Coach Burwick is expecting an above .500 record and a playoff slot.

Volleyball team starts new season after losing seven seniors By Sheldon Christenson Adams County Record
Coach Jon Kohler is in his seventh season as head coach of the Hettinger-Scranton volleyball team and will have the difficult task of replacing some talented varsity players who graduated. They included Cassie Holt, Kaitlin Reitz, Brooke Slater, Nicole Weaver, Mariah Blade, Torrin Poss and Talyssa Kvanvig. Working hard to replace those seven are Seniors Cassie Andress, Kaylee Pierce, Jaylee Mattis, McKinsey Jahner, Tanya Huisman and Katie Wolff. Juniors Katelyn Turner, Elizabeth Thompson, Kayla Chadwick and Tara Dillon. Sophomores Tayler Burwick, Madison Warbis, Sam Reuther, Brianna Robinson and Freshman Molly Holt. Last year they finished 18-17 and lost in the quarterfinals of the Region 7 tournament. Their first two games this season resulted in losses to Killdeer, 2-1, and Grant County, 3-0.

Cross country squad expands from last season By Sheldon ChristensonAdams County Record
The Nighthawks cross country team has better numbers this year. According to head coach Stephanie Liner she currently has six runners out for the team. They are Carlos Martinez, Cale Schalesky, Corey Kugel, McKenna Poss, Samantha Knutson and Rebecca Knutson. Stephanie provided me the following
analysis of her team. “I believe we have a strong team this year. Every one of them has done great in practice. They really push hard to improve on every workout. I am excited to bring my knowledge of fitness and running into this years’ workout program, while having fun too. We have an assistant coach, Rachel Fearing that ran for Williston in high school, who is very
knowledgeable and really adds some great ideas into our program. Running is exciting, but at times it can get repetitive. I try to switch the workouts daily to keep it interesting for everyone on the team. I want them to love running as much as I do. The support in the running community is really something. Everyone is extremely positive and encouraging and that is
what I like to bring into my training. Every one works together very well and they are all very good at encouraging each other. It makes my day to see such a great group of kids constantly working hard on improving themselves and working well together as a team. I am very excited to see them all achieve their goals as the season goes on.”

Returning players key to Mott/Regent’s football season By COLE BENZ The Herald With almost 30 years of experience, Mott/Regent football coach Ron Benson has seen plenty of teams step on the field in front of him. His squad this year enters the season with a plethora of varsity experience. He has eight in his junior class, many of whom saw plenty of time at the varsity level. “Most of these kids returned from last year,” Benson said. Early in practices Benson is happy with what he is already seeing from his team. When asked how he thought practices were going he replied “pretty well.” Benson also said he likes the tempo his players have shown early in the season. Though he has kept things similar in practices, Benson said they “are always tweaking things.” Benson said his coaching staff tried to cover more in practices this season, part-

With new head coach, Bulldogs hope for improved football season By GREG YALE
Seven seniors will lead the charge for the 2014 Bowman County Bulldogs. Tel Lardy and Kyle McGee return to starting roles in the offensive backfield and will anchor the outside linebacker core. Bondon Scott returns as a receiver after a serious season-ending injury last year in game two and will be a hybrid defensive player as a linebacker and secondary player. Jordan Bloomgren saw significant time on the offensive and defensive lines, and we’ll look for him to be a major contributor. Jason Schade also returns after an injury placed him on the sideline for much of the year. He, too, will play on the offensive and defensive lines. Chandler Braaten returns to the gridiron after a year off. He will be a linebacker and running back. Sterling Quintanella
will return to the Maroon and White after spending a year in Dickinson. He will be featured on the offensive and defensive lines. Several underclassmen return with an abundance of varsity experience. The following players started at one time or another last season: juniors, Daniel Baesler (OL/DL), Lane Jeffers (TE/ LB), and Jayden Hofland (Rec/LB); sophomores, Sterling Lee (OL/DL), Bailey McLaughlin (TE/DL), Jacob Boehm (OL/DL), and Mathew Carlson (QB/ DB). Others who will fill major roles are sophomores Brayden Jorgenson (RB/ LB), Trey Stokes-Mullen (Rec/DB), and Mason Moran (C/DL). This group of seniors has the unenviable task of starting a season with only one win in their previous three years of high school experience. Turning that trend around will be their main
mission. The optimism in practice so far has been remarkable. Positive attitudes prevail and the work-ethic has been remarkable, according to new head coach, Greg Yale. “These young men are convinced that this will be the year that the Bowman County Bulldogs return to prominence as one of the serious competitors in Region 4.” Of course, as for any team in the region, staying healthy will be critical to success. Based on returning players, Coach Yale believes Shiloh Christian will be the team to beat in the southwest corner of the state. Richardton/Taylor/ Hebron, Grant County, Beach and Hettinger/Scranton should all be competing for playoff spots. Don’t rule out Mott/Regent with their young team last year. Center/Stanton and Trenton/Trinity Christian appear to be in rebuilding mode.
As for the Bulldogs, Coach Yale thinks the first two games will dictate the rest of the season. “We open up with Grant County at home on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 6:00 pm and go to Mott/ Regent on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 pm. If we could win either one of those games and be competitive in both, then I think we could be in the hunt for a playoff

spot. If we lose both and are not even competitive in them, it will be difficult to avoid that ‘here-we-goagain’ sinking feeling, with Shiloh/Christian and Richardton/Taylor up next on the schedule.” The players seem to be very determined to turn it around and the talent could very well be there to do it. The most difficult part will be building the
confidence required to play consistent football for 4 full quarters, according to Yale. It’s one thing to be in the game. It is entirely another thing to find a way to win that game in crunch time. If these seniors can lead us through that first tough challenge early in the season, then who knows what may happen after that.

This fall will has brought a renewed spirit to the Bowman County Cross Country Team. Building off the successes of last year’s teams, the Bulldogs look to improve, and at the end of the year be in the hunt for top 5 state finishes. The girls team is relatively young, but contains a great mix of veterans and rookies. Age isn’t as important as experience, and the Bulldogs find themselves in an unusual place with much of their experience found in the underclassmen. This mix makes for a very fun dynamic, seeing a team gel together, knowing each member is valued and appreciated. The Lady Bulldogs will be led by Mikayla Bartholomay, and Lacey Feist, two sophomores who are experienced and talented runners. After that the Bulldogs have a slew of runners who will be competing for the team’s top 5 spots. That competition is healthy and the girls will be working hard to better not only them-
selves, but their teammates as well. The boys team will bring back some very talented runners, but their depth will be the determining issue of how far they can go. Anytime you are dealing with depth issues, it is very important that the team stays healthy. The Bulldogs don’t have a clear cut “leader”, but instead four runners that will push each other to excellence every day. The Bulldogs will be looking to some younger kids to step up and provide that depth, but only time will tell how that development takes place. The boys Team is paced by David Chavez, Alex Bartholomay, Brayden Miller, and Andrew Miller. They will be looking for much needed depth from Lucas Meadows, Orion Thompson, Tim Fischer, and Ethan Fischer. It is a small group of guys, but it is a group that works together, and puts the greater good of the team first. Their unselfishness, and service to teammates are qualities that any good team needs to possess.

Upbeat, positive attitudes give team hope for season success

The 2014 Bowman County Volleyball team has a huge number for seniors participating and willing to step up to the plate and give their hearts to make it a successful year. We only have a couple of returning players that have had plenty of time on the Varsity court. Starting with Karly Palczewski as a returning starter in the setter position. She brings knowledge and understanding of moving and setting the ball. Next up is Ariana Zook as a defensive specialist (back row) or libero. Her main position last year was a Libero. She is a solid back row passer and aggressive at going for the ball. Kendra Swanson also has seen playing time but do to some health issues last year was not able to play as much as was required from her. This year she brings the upbeat and positive attitude that the sport of volleyball needs. She plays an outside hitter and when connects properly with the ball will be tough to stop. Some other seniors that have seen some playing time are Sarah Kruger who is getting more aggressive and gaining
knowledge as a middle hitter. Brittany Alderson who played outside hitter last year has been moved to a right hitter and gaining confidence. Melissa Bucholz would typically would play back row is now moving into the front row as a right hitter also. Madison Fischer is playing middle hitter and filling those shoes too. Kalea Hoff is the other strong and well rounded defensive specialist (back row) and libero. And the last senior who hasn’t seen the court since her freshman year is Justyce Duffield. She is quick to learn the sport again and filling in a few different positions. To round the varsity team off, we have Hannah Septon, who is a junior, and is currently our strongest hitter. Between her and Kendra we have some strong outside hitting options. Taylor Powell, a junior, will also see some varsity playing time. Our team may be small in numbers, but the heart that the girls show at practice is overwhelming. The total number out for Bowman County in high school is 24 players. We hope to see this number grown each year.

Tiger volleyball features 9/2 young roster By COLE BENZ The Herald
Entering her third season, Taylor Brown said her team is progressing well through the early part of the season. “They’ve progressed a lot already in the short amount of time that I’ve had them [team],” Brown said. Practices started on Monday, August 18 and the squad played their first game roughly three weeks later on September 2. The varsity squad is coming off a 14-6 regular season, with a 1-1 record in the regional tournament. They lost to Trinity in the semifinal game of the contest. Brown lost three seniors from last season’s team, and she’s going to carry three in the senior class this season. Given the small amount senior experience on the team, Brown said her early focuses during practice was fundamentals. According to Brown, they broke things down a little more this year versus years past, and getting to know each other is a big part of that. Something Brown said will get better as the year progresses. She is returning four varsity girls but only two of them saw significant play-
ing time with the top level competition, so one thing she’ll be making sure her team can do well is communicate. “If we can be a louder communicating team, we’ll be a lot more effective,” Brown said. A part of that communication is just getting comfortable with each other. With so many new players on the varsity team, Brown said that communicating will be vital to their success. Along with communicating, passing is something Brown said her squad heavily focused on early in the practices. “With a young team, we’ve got to be pretty consistent on the floor as far as passing goes,” Brown said. The team will head into the season with reigning kill leader in the region. Taylor Hewson had a great year last year, leading the region in kills and kills per game during the 2013 season. Hewson will also be looking to pass the 1,000 mark in kills at some point in the 2014 campaign. Another asset Brown said will benefit her squad is the senior leadership brings. Brown said that they have a very strong voice on the floor, and that they work well with the rest of the team.

NEW ENGLAND/DICKINSON TRINITY FOOTBALL ROSTER FEATURES 12 SENIORS By COLE BENZ The Herald The Dickinson Trinity Titans are heading into a new season. This past year was a tough one for the team as they had a young team last year, but head coach John Odermann is confident his team has excelled enough over the past year to be successful this season, and he can see it during this early part of the season. “Practices have been going very well. It’s exciting to see kids that have a year of experience under their belt, last year we were young.” Odermann said. “It’s exciting to see how these kids have gotten bigger, stronger, faster throughout the summer and throughout the last school year, and we’re excited about what they can do this year.” Practices started August 13, and Odermann said they’ve kept things similar to year’s past. They lost two seniors to graduation last year, but are returning an astonishing 12 to the senior class. Though they struggled and failed to secure a victory last season, Odermann said there were plenty of things they can take away from last season. “We saw a lot of positives on both sides of the ball,” Odermann said. He also said he can see evidence of growth during their practice sessions. “The thing that we have seen so far this fall has been that the kids have been playing a little bit more aggressively than they did last year, not as tentatively,” Odermann said. “I think that has a lot to do with the increased number of seniors

and the veteran leadership that we have out there.” Though they played young underclassmen last year, Odermann said that is going to benefit from having players with that experience, especially for the younger players coming up this year. “Now that we have kids that have that varsity experience, they can kind of hand that on to the younger kids at practice,” Odermann said. On strength Odermann says his team has include some offensive skill players that will allow them to move the ball. “Offensively, we’ve got some weapons on the outside, where we feel like we can throw the ball pretty well,” Odermann said. According to Odermann, depth at both the offensive, and defensive line are going to be pluses for his squad this season. “We also like what we’re seeing from guys up front on the offensive and defensive line, we have a lot of depth there this year that we haven’t in year’s past,” Odermann said. He also added that his defensive backs have come on with pass coverage and making tackles in the run game. One thing he knows his team needs to improve on to succeed are finishing plays, on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. “We have to get better at finishing plays and finishing tackles,” Odermann said. Trinity also co-ops with New England. New England students going out for the team this year include Ty Nordby (Sr.), Mason Petri (Jr.), Cody Holt (So.), Nick Rettinger (Fr.), Denit Sorenson (Fr.), and John Wolf (Fr.).

So, early in the 2014 season, players will be competing for starting roles, particularly on the offensive and defensive line, as the season shakes out. Regardless, the Cowboys have a good mix of team speed and experience with a defense which promises to be their strong suit. Players will get plenty of playing time as depth is a question but, special teams should be strong. The Cowboys have a tough schedule exacerbated by the delay in construction of their new artificial turf field which is slated for completing by the end of September. Their tough schedule includes
much improved teams from Trinity and Heart River and, of course, a crucial game against State Champion Hazen in Game 9. Home games against Dickinson, Heart River, and Central McLean will most likely be contested at the Biesot Activities Center awaiting completion of the Cowboy’s new field. On offense, they are led by QB Trenton Rohr (49/103 passes for 821 yards and 6 TD’s and 95 rushes for 855 yds and 17 TD’s), Lewis Dobitz (68 rushes for 619 yards, 11 TD’s and averaging 8.8 yds per catch receiving), John Knopik (65 rushes for 320 yards and 9 TD’s) and receiver Tuff Kling (averaging 12.0 yds per catch). On defense, John Knopik (averaging 2.4 unassisted and 6.2 assisted tackles per game), Lewis Dobitz (1.8 and 3.8 per game), and Dillan Jepson (1.7 and 2.4 per game).

With five returning starters, spirits are up for Cowboy volleyball

The Killdeer Cowboy’s volleyball team lost out in the pre-regional playoff game last season to Richardton with the ultimate Champion in their division being Northern Cass who defeated LaMoure 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 2516. However, that did not dampen this year’s team spirit and, luckily, they have returning starters Alyss Kovash, Jessica rStarr, Allison Scheetz, Taycee Butts, and Jane Dukart to look to for veteran leadership. New to the 2014 Varsity rotation are Savannah Rogers, Kasey Houghton, Lakken Bice, Gabi Flaget, Jocelyn
Walker, and Abbie Zastoupil. The focus this preseason has been fundamentals and learning to work together as a team. It has paid off with the first 2014 victory against region rival Scranton but, second year Head Coach Aman says, “there is still a lot of work to be done. We have a very good region and if we stay focused and use the training we had during pre-season we will be competitive.” Rounding out this year’s coaching staff is Chelsea Midthun’s (first year assistant) and the new duo is happy to be working together to build a new dynasty. Midthun
is originally from Enderlin and played for Williston State College bringing a lot of great ideas to the table and Coach Aman states, “ I’m lucky to have her by my side. She definitely knows the game well and is a great asset to our program.” First year setter Savannah Rogers is reputed to have naturally great hands and knows the game. In addition, Senior Alyss Kovash is expected to be a great asset to the team as a right side hitter. At 6’3” tall, the Cowboys intend to use her height to their advantage this year too. Taycee Butts is back as middle hitter after battling a shoulder injury

that kept her out of commission half of the 2013 season. She is reported to be naturally talented and has a great attitude. Coach Aman extends the compliment, “A player like Taycee knows the game and is aggressive. Cowboys cross country looks to build on successful 2013 campaign By Pat J. Merriman
Girls Team: Placed 1st at West Region meet, 2nd at State XC Meet. The girl’s crosscountry team returns the bulk of their roster from last season, only graduating all-region runner Morgan LeMieux. The girls return a strong core and, are looking to be in the hunt for trophies at both the region and state meets. In scoring, they are led by a young group featuring two-time all-state competitor Sydney Andersen, all-region runners Danielle Benz and Trae Murray, and the #2 runner on the state team last year--Shawnee Hansen. Looking to add more kick to the crew are returning veterans Jurnee Murray, Angel Calkins, and Amber Kukla. All three sustained injuries last Fall but, Kukla has been a solid runnerup at State in the past and, all three veterans have had good starts in Fall practice. Freshmen Rachel Kisse and Corrie Dobitz, along with 8th grader Bailey Smith, round out the team looking to push to the front of the pack this season too. There is also a large contingent of 7th graders making the future look bright for the Cowboys for years to come. Last season, the Cowboys edged out Bismarck Shiloh Christian for the regional title but, fell short to Hillsboro at the State meet. In the West, Shiloh, Southern McLean, Bowman County, Beulah-Hazen, Stanley, and Surrey all return talented runners too which should make for an exciting West Region. Hillsboro and Rugby will be the top teams coming out of the East. Boys Team: Last Season, the boys placed 8th in the West Regionals and 28th at State XC meet. Regardless, the boys have made some strides over the past two seasons graduating their top runner in graduated Senior Jon Mosset. Returning, experienced runners Caleb Muscik and Colby Dukart will augment Lewis Dobitz and Trenton Rohr who will also be running when they are not on the football field this Fall. Younger runners look to improve as the season progresses and, the Cowboys expect to place better at both the Regionals and State meet. New Town looks to be the favorite at the start of this new season. Returning Seniors Lewis Dobtiz, Caleb Musick, and Trenton Rohr will complement Sophomore Colby Dukart, Freshman Cole Dade, 8thgrader Garrett Calkins and, 7th-grader Daylon Wilkie.
