Curry County: ’We Love It Here!’ Jeremy Dumire, Emergency Services Coordinator

J
eremy Dumire is like a lot of Curry County residents in saying, “I absolutely love living here.” The difference for Dumire is that his job is to ensure those who live here do so in relative safety. As Curry County’s emergency services coordinator, Dumire is tasked with keeping the 23,000 or so inhabitants of the county ready for whatever my come down the pike in the way of manmade or natural disasters. No pressure there. Born and raised in the Bridge area of Powers, near Myrtle Point, Dumire began his career as a firefighter for Coos Forest Protective Agency, eventually becoming a correctional deputy with the Curry County Sheriff’s Department. But, “I guess I missed the smell of smoke” he jokes. So when the emergency services position opened up, he jumped at the chance. “I was like this kid in a candy store. To be able to help people when things are at their worst was very
appealing to me.” Like his neighbors across Curry County, Dumire considers this region an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true. “Everything is here you could possibly ask for: hiking, fishing, kayaking, bicycling. And the incredible, stunning natural backdrops to do it all in. “There are fantastic views, like Secret Beach and Cape Sebastian, and magnificent places to watch a sunset in Pistol River. For me, its hard to beat hiking the Rogue River Trail.” Dumire took over the reins as Curry’s emergency services coordinator at the conclusion of the Chetco Bar Fire a couple of years ago. He said that made him aware of the resiliency pf the people who live here. “Their strength in the face of losing something, or everything, they had was amazing.” Dumire worked with governmental and civic organizations, such as the Red Cross, to help get relief to those affected by the massive fire, which crept to within 5 miles of Brookings proper. protect against the unthinkable, is his dream job. Most weeks, he logs 60 to 70 hours in an effort to keep Curry County residents prepared for whatever dangerous event may come along. And what might that be? “There’s fires, floods, earthquakes, tsunami, sink holes, landslides, tornados and terrorist attacks.” Tornados? Terrorist attacks? Here in Curry County? “Yes, we have had two tornadic waterspouts develop off Brookings in recent years. And the coast was bombed by Japan back in World War II. We consider any bombs to be terror-related.” Then, there’s the ultimate disaster - the Cascadia event. The historical megaquake and resulting tsunami that frequents this coastal area on average every 350 years is now overdue, according to those who have studied the event through time. “I don’t want people to be scared,” said Dumire, “I want them to be prepared instead. If I can help them do that, to have a plan in place, then we can work together to help each other when that time comes.”

Randy Robbins Staff Writer “Sometimes, a person has to travel the world to find that perfect place.” Angela Ewing knows of what she speaks. Born in Leicester, England at the height of World War II, the uncertainty she remembers her family facing in those troubling times has stayed with her all these years. “I’ve always been a traveler wanting to see other peoples, other places. I don’t know if that was escaping or not, just that I knew that I needed to go,” she said. Most days Ewing can be found at the Brian Scott Gallery in Brookings, where she has been helping to connect artists to the community through her writings and featured short stories on local radio station KCIW. Ewing left her native England after exploring such diverse destinations as Prague and Portugal, arriving in America a few decades ago. “I always thought that America had streets of gold,” she says. Ewing arrived from England in Chappaquiddick, New York. Her first job
was as a housemaid. Thereafter, she was a realtor, home economist and travel agent, among other occupations. Her time as a travel agent fostered a writer’s creative force that led to columns for magazines and newspapers, including a column for The Pilot’s sister paper in Crescent City, the Del Norte Triplicate. Heading north out of California into Oregon, Ewing first made her way to Portland. “Portland was okay,” she said, but not really her cup of tea. “It may sound silly, but I was just homesick for some cherry trees!” The fruit trees grew readily in the Midlands, from whence she came. Ever the student, Ewing determined through her research that southern Oregon had a climate nearly identical to her former home. With that knowledge, she set off for Brookings in 2008. Now a fixture in the community, Ewing said what she really loves about living here in addition to her cherry trees - is the ocean, which she walks along nearly every day. And, yes, the local residents. “The people here are an artistic bunch but they aren’t recluses, they are joiners. They care about the community and really make
it what it is,” said Ewing. Too, “The beauty of the nature here is the best in the world. I find the dunes, the grasses and the ocean to be so inspiring as a writer.” In addition to her work at the gallery, Ewing said she occasionally takes a turn at voice-over acting. “They hear my British accent and I suppose that puts me in demand.”

n the classic children’s story “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” there’s a part where Blondie tries out three bowls of porridge. while the bears are out doing bear stuff. One bowl was too hot, another too cold. Finally, one was “just right.” Gary Milliman had much the same kind of search. First, he tried living in the Los Angeles area. Too crowded, too many freeways, too fast-paced, a two-hour commute to boot. Next, he tried out Fort Bragg, California. Too small, too remote, not enough going on. (But at least it was closer to the ocean.) Milliman could boast of an extensive background in city management in California - Cotati, Fort Bragg, South Gate. Which, as it turned out, would be his ticket for finding someplace “just right.” When Milliman and wife, Carolyn, saw a listing for a city manager in Brookings, he applied and was immediately accepted. For the couple, Curry County turned out to be their happy ending. “There’s a world of difference between here
and the places I have lived in before,” said Milliman. “The social interaction is great and we were able to become involved in many community activities. We really enjoy the people here. “This area is large enough to find things to do, but small enough not to have to fight rush-hour traffic on the freeway. Here, you are minutes away from everything.” Milliman, now somewhat “retired,” said he enjoyed his tenure as the city manager in Brookings, citing a “good working relationship” with the city council, particularly in developing a vision for the community’s infrastructure. He was doing projects, he said, that “helped benefit everyone,” such as the city’s expansion of its sidewalk system, and cultivating newbusiness ventures such as bringing Bi-Mart to town. As for those city sidewalks, “I saw mothers trying to push baby strollers on graveled road edges. I thought, that’s not safe.” And, of course, there’s this region’s scenic splendor. “We purchased a couple of acres and I enjoy working in the yard in this beautiful place, which has this fantastic forested environment near the ocean.” When Milliman isn’t busy being “kind of,

sort of, retired,” he serves as a municipal judge for Powers and Port Orford, and as a municipal judge in Brookings’ truancy court. He is a big believer in volunteering, serving as a senior fellow at Portland State University and as a senior advisor with the Oregon City/ County Management Association. But when he does find some down time, Milliman said he’s happy taking in the lily fields a few minutes away from his home, or paying a visit to the cows in Smith River. “There aren’t too many places left like this one.”

Curry County: ’We Love It Here!’ Rob Krebs, Owner Black Trumpet
When Rob Krebs was a youngster, age 7, he said he recalls that his grandpa would pack up the truck every chance he got and leave the family’s home in Reno, Nevada to vacation in Curry County. “Grandpa just loved it here. And soon, I did too!” Krebs said that even then, he knew this would be his future home. Taking a break from perfecting mouthwatering dishes like chicken marsala and pork belly sliders in his Italian restaurant Black Trumpet in Brookings, Krebs explained this area’s attraction: “This place is green, beautiful, with clean air and rivers... We are lucky to live here.” By “we,” he means his wife, Kylie, and son, R.E. Krebs met Kylie when both were working at a Reno restaurant. The couple said their wedding vows and soon set out to own their own restaurant in Brookings. They’ve lived here since 2007. Beyond the beautiful scenery, said Krebs, the region’s principle attraction is the
people who live here. In addition, “This is a safe place. It is a great place to raise a family and everyone is looking out for each other.” He nods to son R.E., who attends middle school, where he loves band and baseball. “When he heads off to school, I don’t worry. Great schools, great community.” And how’s his business doing? “We are so blessed by all of our customers,” said Krebs. “They are so faithful and support us when the tourists have gone home for the winter. “The business? It’s great!” What kinds of activities are the Krebs involved in when not serving up their delicious Italian fare? “We like to plan family outings to the mountains to kick back, relax and pick mushrooms.”

Curry County: ’We Love It Here!’ Leslie Wilkinson, Festival of Lights Director
Randy Robbins Staff Writer “Why do I love it here?” Leslie Wilkinson has been living in the Brookings area for just two years, but in that short span she has taken to Curry County like, well, a duck to water. “Initially, as odd as it may sound, it was about the water,” said Wilkinson. “But soon, we found so much more here than we desired.” Wilkinson and her husband of 35 years, Paul, previously lived in the Chico area. Having grown up in Redding, she was used to being in municipalities where water is at a premium and so is the price to use it. “Paul and I were tired of paying $125 per month for just the basics. No watering lawns, no washing cars. “And utilities? Don’t get me started. PGE was $400 just to be on the meter.” There was that. Plus, what Wilkinson describes as the Golden State’s over-the-top “bureaucratic red-tape nightmare” to secure any building permits related to establishing a new home. Add to that, the couple’s desire to live next to the ocean, something they both had been
exposed to as children. So, it was off to explore Oregon. After checking out every seaside town from Brookings north to Astoria, Wilkinson decided Brookings’ “banana belt” was for them. They moved in 2017. Ahh, the water. They soon discovered Curry County has lots of it. Ocean, rivers … and rain. But listening to Leslie, what really sealed the deal was the people they met here. “It was so easy for us to become a part of the community. Everyone is so friendly and caring. You can walk right in and meet your police and fire chiefs personally, and can bump into your doctor at the checkout stand at the grocery store!” She said that in the couple’s experience living in larger communities, “Everyone is isolated. Complete strangers.” Not long after, Wilkinson became involved with the area’s “Festival of Lights” holiday program after contacting the group about her large assortment of extra decorative lights lugged here from Chico. Curry County: ’We Love It Here!’ Jodi Fritts, Gold Beach City Administrator
Jodi Fritts seems right at home in the chambers of the Gold Beach City Council. She should, after growing up in Gold Beach pretty much from the age of 12 and working at a variety of positions within the community. Starting as a Forest Service lookout volunteer in 1989, the 51-year-old Gold Beach city administrator has also served as a survey technician, bookkeeper, emergency dispatcher and IT technician. She said her parents “moved around a lot,” coming from her native Michigan and relocating to Indiana, Florida and California along the way. On one particular day, she said, her mother announced to the family, “Oh, by the way, we’re moving to Oregon.” Fritts remembers grabbing a map of the U.S. along with her brother to see “just where Oregon was.” Flying first to Portland, the family made its way down the coast by car to Curry County. Fritts remembers “a magical moment” after passing just south of Port Orford. “We came upon this expanse of ocean where Humbug

Mountain is located and it was incredible!” Her family subsequently got wanderlust and left the state, but Fritts eventually was able to return to Curry County, this time for good. She considers the city staff in Gold Beach “like family. Because we care about each other, we care about this special place we share, and we want to do what is best for it.” On this particular day, Fritts is clutching a large red agate she picked up at her own personal “happy place” - the small community of Agness, 45 minutes up the Rogue River from Gold Beach. “When I need to get away and recharge,” she said, “I find solace and renewal in this fantastic place where the Illinois and Rogue rivers combine deep in the forests.” She said she loves not only her job with the city, but also the privacy here in Curry County. “The entire county is about 23,000 people – small, I suppose, for some people - but for those who call this home, we wouldn’t have it any other way.” Fritts pointed in particular to the area’s natural resources, low crime and warm climate. “From my office, I look out one direction over the Pacific, then turn and see the

Curry Health Welcomes New OB-GYN! Curry Health Network is pleased to welcome Richard (Rik) Battey, MD, OBGYN, to their team of provider specialists. Dr. Battey comes to CHN from the Grants Pass area and has extensive experience in performing various obstetric and gynecologic procedures, both in the clinic and hospital settings. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, LA, a city in which he also completed an obstetrics & gynecology internship and residency, and is licensed and board certified in both. He has participated in over 5,000 deliveries and manages routine and highrisk pregnancies, but is currently providing gynecological care only. Dr. Battey is excited to be living on the beautiful southern Oregon coast with the opportunity to utilize his experience and training as an OB-GYN physician to care for the patients of our communities.
