Last year the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals cross country team had a decent season. The young team that the Cards have out this year hopes to build on that momentum. Todd Hetler is once again head coach of the program and now in his seventh year. Kiara Bassingthwaite is an assistant coach for the team once again this year. This year’s team has six girls and five boys out running. Langdon-Edmore-Munich’s top runners from last year are back in sophomore twins Jane and Kate Sillers. When asked about the upcoming season, Coach Hetler said, “We have some quality runners this year. We are excited to see how far we can go as a team.” Some highlights from the Cards schedule include the Harvey Hope Invitational at the Langdon Country Club Sept. 20, the 2021 East Region Tournament in Cooperstown on Oct. 16, and the State B Meet in Jamestown Oct. 23.

L-E-M girls golfers enjoying a new fall season By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
For the first time since the late 1980s, North Dakota Class B girls golf has switched from a spring to a fall season. The Langdon-Edmore-Munich girls golfers have gotten a number of fall meets in already and are looking to continue their strong start. The Cards have 15 golfers out for the team in grades 7-12. Gone from last year’s team are All-Region sisters Gracie and Olivia Christianson, with Gracie lost to graduation and Olivia focusing on volleyball. There are four seniors out for this year’s team: Claire Hiltner, Lauren Gendron, Ashley Perry, and Abby Forest, who is new to the team this year. There are no juniors but three sophomores: Taryn Romfo, Arianna Haraseth and Emmy Pankratz. Rylee Medberry is the lone freshman, and junior high features five eighth graders with McKenzie Regner, Mya Johnson, Emma Hetler, Nora Lorenz, and Maggie Iverson. Two seventh grad-
ers round out the team - Nadia Lewis and MaKayla Bartlett. Jenny Romfo is in her 15th season as the head coach of the girls squad and is assisted by Connie Kjos. When asked about the team and the new fall season, Coach Romfo said, “It’s nice to be able to golf outside right away. Coming off of summer, the girls have been able to golf during the summer and improve on their skills. We have a few new golfers and some returning from last year. It is amazing how much a person can improve in a few weeks. I am very happy with the numbers we have and look forward to seeing more improvement in the weeks to come. A few younger girls are also playing volleyball, and we are working out practice times with them. Hopefully both seasons go smoothly. We are looking forward to meets in Northwood, Grafton, Cando, Langdon, and Lakota. Our regional meet will be at King’s Walk in Grand Forks on September 15, and the state tournament is in Carrington on the 27-28th of September.” The date for the Langdon meet is Sept. 13.

Cardinals reloaded and ready to try for fourth straight State title By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
What a year it was once again for the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals football team in 2020, as they went undefeated for the third straight year and winning their third straight Class A 11-Man football title with a win over Lisbon 42-28 in the Dakota Bowl. Gone from last year’s team are six seniors - Class A Senior Athlete of the Year Simon Romfo, All-Staters Grant Romfo and Alex Clutchie, AllRegion player Cooper Zimmer, plus Drew Simpson and Skyler Fincher. While the Cardinals lost a ton of talent, one of the best classes in program history, they bring back a lot of players that have seen varsity action and are ready to make their names known. There are four seniors out for this year’s team: Tucker Welsh, Shaun Goeser, Jacob Pollestad and Zach Rostvet, who is back with the team after taking last year off. The juniors are led by second team All-State lineman Jack Romfo, along with Carter Tetrault, Markus Kingzett, Gage Goodman, Alex Gellner, Ethan Okeson, Brody Steinmetz, and Brady Regner, who is also back with the squad after a year away. Sophmores out for the team are three players who saw sig-
nificant time on the varsity last year Mason Romfo, Rayce Worley and Cole Welsh, along with Nick Kingzett, Eli Johnson, Dawson Hein, Kadyn Hein, Parker Rime, Chase Moen, and Rudy Moser. Seven freshman round out the team with Reed Scherr, Jayden Lee, Dakotah Brady, Jake Lowery, Tommy Gendron, Cody Amble and Jake Sanders. Josh Krivarchka, after winning another Class A 11-Man Coach of the Year honor last season, is once again back to coach the Cardinals, and he is assisted this year by Tim Polanski, Sam Preble, and Marty Tetrault. When asked about this year’s team, Coach Krivarchka said, “We are really excited for the upcoming season. We have some talented players returning this year, and we are excited to see some of our younger guys step up . It should be a fun year for Cardinal football.” The Cards will have a new region and classification this year, as they will play in a new Class B 11Man league in the northeast region with Grafton, Park River, Carrington and Harvey-Wells County, and new teams this year in Thompson, Hillsboro-Central Valley and Northern Cass. The Cardinals winning streak will be at 38 when they host Lisbon to start their season on Aug. 20.

The Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals volleyball team had another fantastic year last season. They won the Region 4 title for the sixth year in a row with an exciting 3-2 win over North Star; they also finished second at the State B Tournament, losing to unbeaten Linton-HMB and ending with an overall record of 22-3. The Cardinals lost All-State player Lexi Olson to graduation, as she has now taken her talents to play college volleyball at the University of Jamestown. Also lost from last year’s team are Kaylee Lowery and Raelyn Klindt, but the Lady Cards always seem to reload season after season, and 2021 should not be any different. Langdon-Edmore-Munich has 44 girls out for this year’s teams in grades 7-12. They will be led by three seniors: returning All-Stater Morgan Freije, Marlee Hetletved and Morgan Thielbar. There are five juniors in Taryn Amble, Olivia Christianson, Halle Jabs, Sarah Nelson, and Kaylece Littlewind. They are matched by five sophomores: Cora Badding, Jada Moen, Isabelle Olson, McKenna Schneider, and Jalynn Swanson. Gone

The Lady Cards freshman class is the biggest with nine girls out for the team - Payton Hall, Natalie Perry, Rylee Medbery, Mikaela Olson, Drew Rostvet, Tallia Johnston, Catelyn Goodman, Meredith Romfo, and Claire Chaput. Rich Olson is back for his 26th season coaching the Cardinals, and he is assisted this year by Alison Podhradsky, Jane Hart and Morgan Titus. Tami Flink retired from the program this year after 18 years as an assistant coach. When asked about this year’s Cardinal team, Coach Olson said, “We are excited for the 2021 volleyball season and the opportunity to train and develop our teams. Our players have shown great support for one another as they work together with our coaches to develop their skills. We are focused on continuing to have a great culture that promotes teamwork and player development. We believe through hard work we can continue to improve and become one of the best teams in the state.” The Cardinals biggest competition this season in Region 4 looks to be coming once again from North Star, who brings back multiple All-State hitter Danielle Hagler for her senior season.
