Art on the Coast raises $7,000 for local foster kids BY NATE SCHWARTZ Curry Coastal Pilot

Organizers of one of the South Coast’s favorite art fests made a generous donation to local foster kids through the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Oregon (CASA), thanks to proceeds and donations from this year’s Art on the Coast festival in Harbor. The event, always scheduled for the first weekend in August, brings together local artists, musicians, and vendors for a

weekend of sun, fun, and handmade artisan goods made in Southern Oregon. “I moved here three years ago,” said Art on the Coast Organizer Laura Brown, “and found out that the art festival was being cancelled. It was during Covid, and so they weren’t going to do it anymore in August. I thought, ‘Well that can’t happen!’, so I started it back up.” This year’s event was able to take place thanks to the involvement of the festival’s many local sponsors: CTR, Brookings

Furniture, Pithitude, The Emblem Club, Ocean Suites Hotel, RH Pub and Grill, Travel Curry Coast, Black Trumpet Bistro. McKay’s and Boardwalk Mail. “It is a lot of fun! Great people, great artists, great promoters, and great sponsors!” said Brown. CASA is an organization focused on solving Oregon’s foster care crisis.

Providing training and resources to those who want to help local youth, CASA and their volunteers act as advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. Through the help of donations and local samaritans, CASA has been able to help at risk youth through Please see FOSTER KIDS, Page 3

extra caution as they are more vulnerable to illness from waterborne bacteria. Visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks, pools of water on the beach, or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean. in ocean waters can come from both shore and inland sources including: • Stormwater runoff. • Sewer overflows. • Failing septic systems.

• Animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife. Even if there is no advisory in effect, avoid swimming in the ocean within 48 hours after a rainstorm. Ocean waters will be re-tested after an advisory is issued. Once bacteria levels are at a safe level, OHA will notify the public that the advisory is lifted. While this advisory is in effect at Mill Beach, state officials continue to encourage other recreational activities (flying kites, picnicking, playing on the beach, walking, etc.) on this beach because they pose no health risk even during an advisory. The Small Business Development Center, with an office at SWOCC in Brookings, is offering their second Small Business Management Workshop Series beginning Oct. 8. The nine-month program will be given once a month through June 2025. The workshops cover the essential building blocks for businesses that are starting out, as well as offering an opportunity for existing businesses to grow and improve. Available the second Tuesday of each month, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., experts in their field will be offering information and their guidance in a hands-on workshop. Each attendee will then meet with the local Curry County Business Advisor to bring the information they have learned to life. The idea behind the program is to help business owners “know what they don’t know” and help advance their development, bringing business knowledge which will affect the local economy. “We are looking for business owners we can assist to get the most out of the hard work that they put into their businesses,” said Workshop Facilitator Gayle Goldstone. The first group of participants described the workshops are beneficial. “SBDC’s Small Business Management course has been a life changer for me and my husband as we start the journey of our new business,” said Ashley Mcgehee, owner of Legends Please see BUSINESS, Page 3
