BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
In an inspiring stride toward bridging the digital divide, Beacon Broadband, powered by Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, Inc., recently launched its inaugural streaming class, empowering residents to confidently navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape.
At the core of this heartwarming initiative is 95-year-old Brookings’ resident Carol Hara, a testament to how new-found digital confidence can unlock a world of possibilities from the comfort of home.
“Seeing Carol and other Connected Senior graduates confidently taking on streaming shows exactly why these community collaborations matter,” said Bill Gerski, Beacon's Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “We're not just providing internet service, we're building digital confidence one person at a time."
Hara, who previously graduated from Beacon's Connected Senior program, walked into the Chetco Community Library on June 11th with more than just curiosity; she carried the embodiment of how digital literacy can lead to further technological adventures.
The collaborative class, a joint effort between Beacon Broadband and the Chetco Community Library, attracted a full room of residents eager to explore more affordable streaming options beyond traditional cable.
“Community partnerships like this are essential as the company works to help residents maximize the benefits of their high-speed fiber internet service," Gerski stated.
The room buzzed with questions as residents realized they could save hundreds of dollars annually while still accessing live sports, local news and their favorite programming.
"As a community hub for life-long learning and growth, the library was proud to partner with Beacon Broadband on this project," said Katlyn Liddell, Assistant Director of the Chetco Community Public Library.
The interactive session guided attendees through three simple steps to cut the cord: preparing TV equipment for streaming; choosing the right streaming service and adding on-demand platforms.
"Beacon Broadband had a fantastic turnout for this first streaming class," said Gerski. "In Curry and Coos counties, the digital divide can hit harder than urban areas and with our demographic being primarily retirees, this partnership with the library creates the perfect environment for learning.”

The Chetco Library Endowment Fund and the Friends of the Chetco Library have once again come together to support the evolving needs of the Chetco Community Public Library by co-funding the purchase of a new Parent-Child Workstation for the library’s Children’s Room.
This marks the second collaboration between the two groups, who previously partnered to fund the bookable 2-person Meeting Room Booth, now known as the “Tidepool Room.” Their latest joint effort splits the $12,230 cost of a high-quality, public-use workstation designed by Library Furniture International.
The Parent-Child Workstation provides a valuable solution for caregivers seeking to balance productivity and childcare.
The unit allows a parent or guardian to sit at a desk to read, work, or use a library laptop, available for in-library checkout, while their toddler or infant is safely enclosed and entertained in an adjacent space within arm’s reach.
“We are incredibly grateful to both the Endowment Fund and the Friends of the Library for making this possible,” said Julie VanHoose Director of the Chetco Community Public Library. “Public-use furniture of this caliber is rarely affordable within our regular budget. Their
support allows us to continue providing modern, functional spaces for all members of our community.”
Both the Chetco Library Endowment Fund and the Friends of the Chetco Library welcome donations to help fund future enhancements and services. The Endowment Fund maintains a fund for investments and supports the library only through its investment earnings.
The Friends of the Library manage our twiceper-year used book sales and run the Library Annex bookstore. To donate to either group, please mail donations to either the Chetco Library Endowment Fund or the Friends of the Chetco Library, Every contribution, large or small, helps ensure our library continues to grow as a welcoming, accessible space for all.

The Oregon Tourism Commission, dba Travel Oregon, is awarding nearly $6.2 million to 65 groundbreaking projects through the agency’s 202425 Competitive Grants Program. This significant investment represents the agency’s commitment to fostering remarkable visitor experiences that increase access and inclusion for historically and currently underserved or
under-resourced communities.
Travel Oregon’s competitive grants program awards eligible applicants for projects that contribute to the development and improvement of communities throughout the state by means of the enhancement, expansion and promotion of the visitor industry. Eligible applicants include local governments, port districts,
federally recognized Tribes and non-profit entities registered with the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office. Funded projects represent a wide range of community visions, from adaptive trails and inclusive outdoor activities to cultural heritage programming and experiences.
“These transformational grant funds build upon the remarkable travel experiences available across Oregon for residents
and visitors alike,” said Travel Oregon CEO Todd Davidson. “From adaptive mountain biking trails to heritage tours that share important cultural stories, these 65 projects are rewriting what it means to travel our state. We’re removing barriers to experiences that have, in the past, been out of reach for many people. We’re excited to support projects across the state’s seven regions that help ensure Oregon is truly
welcoming to all.”
The 2024-25 Travel Oregon Competitive Grants Program was designed to increase access and inclusiveness for those who may have experienced barriers to visiting our great state—whether by better addressing various mobility challenges or celebrating the diversity of people and communities who live in and travel to Oregon.
This year’s grant awardees represent meaningful work

from all seven of Oregon’s tourism regions, creating a statewide network of accessible and inclusive experiences.
The South Coast is the recipient of two of these grants: • City of Gold Beach: $75,000.00 to replace the existing playground with a new ADA compliant, accessible structure at the centrally located Collier H. Buffington Memorial Park, creating a safer place for visitors and residents of all abilities to play.
“Thanks to this grant, we’re one step closer to building a facility that truly reflects the diverse and vibrant community of locals and visitors who love our beautiful coastal town. We’re so excited to expand our current offerings by significantly enhancing our outdoor recreation area to enrich the visitor experience and transform Buffington Park into an even more inviting, inclusive, and dynamic public space for all to enjoy.” - Anthony Pagano, Community Development Director, City of Gold Beach
• David’s Chair Outdoor Mobility Systems: $98,900.00 to expand services in the Oregon Coast communities of Seaside, Rockaway Beach, Pacific City and Coos Bay through the addition of five all-terrain track chairs and a trailer.

“Those with mobility challenges, regardless of the reason, are most often left out, or disregarded, when it comes to outdoor recreation and experiences. With the help of Travel Oregon, David’s Chair is providing access for those who need it, free of charge, via electric all-terrain track chairs. We are very grateful for this support and the more equitable community and accessibility we can create together.” - Jeff Kallevig, Operations Manager, David’s Chair OMS

The Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA), the state's first and longest-running virtual public charter school, celebrated a dual milestone on June 7th: its 20th anniversary and the commencement of its Class of 2025.
The ceremony, held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, honored nearly three-hundred five graduates from across Oregon, including two accomplished students from Brookings.
Emilia Daugherty and Savannah Harnden, both from Brookings, were among the distinguished graduates. Daugherty earned a spot in the top three percent of the graduating class, while Harnden actively participated in ORCA’s innovative ASCEND career and technical education program.
Emily Pennington, ORCA’s student government president, encapsulated the graduating class's spirit
with a quote from Walt Disney: "Keep Moving Forward." She commended her classmates.
"We have all pushed, persevered and put everything we have into making this moment happen, and truthfully, we all more than exemplify this quote, we embody it,” said Pennington. The class of 2025 is going to take this skill to 'Keep Moving Forward' and go as far as their dreams can take them.”
ORCA's success is attributed to its dynamic and personalized curriculum, designed to prepare students for both higher education and the demands of the modern workforce. The school offers unique opportunities such as the ASCEND career and technical education program, the AVID college and career readiness program, and a vibrant schedule of social events, all aimed at empowering students to achieve their aspirations.
Originally known as Oregon Connections Academy, ORCA tran-

sitioned to an independent, tuition-free virtual public charter school in 2020. This move further enhanced its capacity to serve K-12 students statewide with advanced technology and customizable approaches to a standards-based curriculum.
Joe Mogford, ORCA's high school principal, expressed immense pride in the graduates. "We are confident that wherever these students go next, they are prepared to thrive," Mogford said. "It’s a privilege to be part of their educational journey. Congratulations, graduates, you all will do great things!"
A core tenet of ORCA's mission is to equip students with 21st-century skills, often referred to as the "Four C's": critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. These vital skills are designed to give students a crucial advantage as they transition into post-secondary education and the competitive job market. Fully

accredited and with a curriculum aligned to Oregon state academic standards, ORCA is open and free to all K-12 students.
Willamette Connections Academy Celebrates 162 Graduates
On the same day, Willamette Connections Academy also celebrated its Class of 2025 with one-hundred sixty-two students eagerly moving their tassels from right to left as their teachers, family, and friends cheered them on. Among the graduates was Maria Elwell from Gold Beach.
"I’m proud to celebrate the Class of 2025 as they embark on their next chapter, whether pursu-

ing higher education or launching their careers," said Christina Andresen, executive director of Willamette Connections Academy. "It has been an honor to witness their growth and hard work. While I’ll miss seeing their friendly faces, I am confident they are equipped with the skills and determination to build bright futures."
“My experience with Willamette Connections Academy has been incredibly positive. Unlike other online schools I’ve attended, I love that I can work ahead and move at my own pace, something that has helped me tremendously, said Di Efendi Blanchard, a senior at Willamette

Connections Academy.
“I’ve built a strong work ethic, grown more confident in trying new things, and improved my communication skills thanks to the support of my teachers.” Willamette Connections Academy serves over 1,500 students in grades K-12 across Oregon, emphasizing both academic and interpersonal skills beneficial beyond the classroom. The tuition-free school is supported by state-certified teachers specifically trained in online instruction, providing a well-rounded virtual education that fosters meaningful connections in a supportive learning environment.
