National Night Out: A Community's Stand for Safety and Connection BY LINDA LEE
Curry Coastal Pilot
It happens every first Tuesday in August. Millions of Americans turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and head out for a night of strengthening community bonds between friends, neighbors and first responders. Known as the National Night Out, people have been coming together for this event since its inception in 1984 when the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) began the National Night Out event. The inaugural event hosted 2.5 million people from across twenty-three states within 400 communities that came together to show support for, and get to know, their local first responders and neighbors; thereby, creating a stronger, safer community. This year, the Brookings Police Department is proud to host this annual event on August 5th, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Ross Road and Frontage Road near the Goodwill store. This free, family-friendly event promises an evening of fun, education and community connection. Those attending will have the opportunity to engage with Brookings’ First Responders, get up-close looks at emergency response vehicles, learn an array of safety tips and ask local first responders questions.
Safety First: Officer Kimball (l) and School Resource Officer Branion work together ensure the community’s safety.

Derelict Vessel Moored Near the Mouth of The Chetco River BY LINDA LEE
to be Seized by The State
Curry Coastal Pilot
For several months, a derelict sailing vessel has floated from one spot to the next just under the bridge that connects Brookings to Harbor and is now moored near the mouth of the Chetco River waiting its fate as the tides rise and lower. It’s not known how the catastrophic event that left the sailboat drifting on its own took place, but the self-made Trimaran vessel is set to be seized by the Oregon Department of State Lands for abandonment by the owner. The vessel was reported in distress to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Station Chetco River on Friday May 23rd. At that time, it was partially sunk on the east side of the river almost directly under the Chetco River bridge. On Tuesday May 27th, the vessel was seen, mostly submerged, with an aft portion of the port-side hull separated from the vessel. A few days later, the vessel had drifted approximately six-hundred feet down river and landed hard aground on the jetty boulders where it currently
View from the Rocks: Low tide shows that the vessel is battered.
