Prison staff testing shows more virus cases The Pilot

Results from staff testing conducted last week at Pelican Bay State Prison are beginning to arrive and positive test results have been received, the Del Norte County Public Health officer said Wednesday. According Dr. Warren Rehwaldt, some of positive results are residents of Curry County and will be recorded in their jurisdiction’s data. Sherrié R. Ward, Public Health Administrator for Curry County Public Health told The Pilot Thursday morning that she planned to send out a press release soon. Specific numbers for prison employees living in Curry County who tested positive were not available at presstime for this edition. “Staff at PBSP were tested over a three-day period early last week following a directive from the CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation),” Rehwaldt said in a press release Wednesday afternoon. “Prison officials are working closely with Del Norte

County Public Health to facilitate case investigation and contact tracing.” Individuals who have tested positive and their direct contacts are being advised to quarantine at home. No one has been hospitalized and most individuals are asymptomatic. “Additional measures are being conducted in order to ensure that all positive cases are identified related to this prison cluster,” Rehwaldt added. “While surveillance testing of inmates has been ongoing, mass testing of all inmates is currently underway.” Rehwaldt said testing of all prison staff will be conducted again early next week. “It is important that Del Norte County citizens continue to be vigilant in doing what they can to prevent the spread of this virus. Proper hand hygiene, masking and social distancing are all important in ensuring that we slow the spread so that our limited local resources are not overwhelmed with the consequences of a large outbreak,” he said. Long lost windsocks restored to parade The Pilot

It’s a well-known story in Brookings. In 1942, during World War II, a Japanese pilot dropped a bomb in the forest east of Brookings. It was the only bombing of the mainland by a foreign airplane, but fortunately the fire it caused was put out fairly quickly by local men. Twenty years later, the Brook-

ings-Harbor Jaycees invited the pilot, Nobuo Fujita, to Brookings. He accepted and brought a 400-yearold Samurai sword to the people of Brookings-Harbor as an apology. The sword is on display at the Chetco Community Library. Unknown to many, was that Fujita also brought some large Japanese windsocks and they were flown during the Azalea Parade for many years. Somewhere

along the way, they were lost. But as Amber Nalls of the City of Brookings was planning for the 81st festival, she learned that the windsocks had been found. They were retrieved and Coos-Curry Electric agreed to fly them high over the streets of Brookings during the parade. Thus a trimmed-down Azalea Festival was made a brighter event by the revival of an old tradition.

Parents in the Brookings-Harbor school district should expect to get a phone call from their children’s schools very soon. Schools want to connect with all parents to find out each family’s preference for the coming school year — attending school in person, virtual instruction, or perhaps some combination of the two. At this time, it isn’t known for sure if the state — or local health officials — will allow students to attend in person — but the district wants to determine parental preference as part of its planning. Final decisions are likely to depend a lot on the prevalence of COVID-19 in the community as the beginning of the school year gets closer. For Brookings-Harbor schools, the calendar calls for students to return on Monday, Aug. 31, a week before Labor Day. However, Supt. David Marshall has recommended to the Board of Trustees that the district delay the return of students to Tuesday, Sept. 1 (following the holiday). Teachers return on Aug. 24, and Marshall would like to use the additional time to allow

teachers and other staff to be fully prepared to follow the procedures that will be necessary for students to return. At their July 15 meeting, trustees gave Marshall the green light to proceed with such a plan, but first he must negotiate with the teacher’s association — and then return to the board to approve an MOU. He said earlier this week that he hopes that might be accomplished next week so the academic calendar can be firmed up. Exactly what return to school will be like for Brookings remains to be seen, but talks so far suggest that students will be broken into small groups — called cohorts — and two school sessions will be held each day. The goal, in keeping with advisories from public health officials, is to reduce the size of groups (cohorts) to minimize the impact in case there is an outbreak of the virus. Schools also learned this week that students — along with everyone else on campus — will be expected to wear masks. Marshall is new to the district, but said he’s encouraged by cooperation at every level. “There arerReally good people here,” he said. “And we’re very much in a problem-solving mode. Sandra (Sandy) Sue Rouse Nuss died peacefully in her home on July 10, 2020. Her husband of almost 55 years Donald E. Nuss, Jr. was by her bedside. Sandy was born on August 11, 1937 in Richmond California. She was the oldest born to Oscar and Florence Rouse followed by surviving siblings, Ronald Rouse and Claudia Rouse Raurk. After graduating high school in Ione, California, Sandy started in the entertainment industry singing with Chester Smith and his band. Starting in 1958 Sandy gave birth to her three surviving children,

Donald E. Nuss III, Lora Jabot and Clark Nuss and then relocated to Hiouchi, California. They gave her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 1965 she met her husband Don who adopted her three children from a previous marriage. Don and Sandy owned a Crescent City business, Redwood Welding Service, while raising their children. After their children were raised, Sandy spent hours volunteering. She maintained many friendships and relatives through her love of genealogy research and volunteering at the Del Norte Historical Society.

Beth Delores Coleman Aug. 7, 1933 — July 3, 2020 Beth Coleman peacefully passed away on July 3, 2020, with her family by her side. She is survived by her son Mike McReynolds, three grandchildren Richard, Ryan and Shanon McReynolds, four great-grandchildren Broc, Blake, Reagan and Dane McReynolds, a sister Carol Roach, and nephews and nieces.

Her neighbor of 31 years, Mike Wagaman, is a true friend. She was a great mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was Mary Poppins-like with the love she had for all the animals she would care for on her property. She will be deeply missed. There will be a service at 1 p.m. on July 25 at the Redwood Chapel.

Primo Bertolini at the age of 96, passed away in Brookings, Oregon, at the Sea View Senior Living Center on July 4, 2020. He was the husband of Dorothy May Bertolini. Together they celebrated 72 years of marriage. Primo was born in Buglio in Monte in northern Italy on March 8, 1924. He immigrated through Ellis Island with his mother Caterina Bertolini and his brother Victor. They settled in Cloverdale, California, where Caterina had her third son, Louie. They then moved to Blue Lake, California, where Primo graduated from Arcata High School in 1942. At the age of 22, he moved to Smith River, California, where he invested in farming and dairy cows. They he met his wife Dorothy May Lehman at the Smith River Grange and they were married on June 27, 1948. He was involved in the logging industry for many years. He was always very competitive. In his retirement years Primo became a member of the Good Sam Club. Primo and Dorothy May enjoyed traveling with their group and they had many adventures on their outings. Primo also became an avid fisherman, especially trolling for trout with a long line. He enjoyed cooking for the many family gatherings that were held. His garden was a source of abundant produce and much joy. He perfected a strain of Italian beans that he called Crivelli beans, a strain the he is famous for in the metropolis of Gasquet. Primo is survived by his wife Dorothy May Bertolini of 72 years. Man found dead in Smith River A body found in the town of Smith River on July 16 was identified as Robert Fekete, 59, with a last known address in Crescent City. According to Del Norte County Undersheriff Randy Waltz, Fekete apparently died of natural causes. His body was found behind the former Ray’s Market Food Place on N. Fred Haight Drive. “There were no signs of foul play,” Waltz said.

Face coverings, or masks, will be required throughout Oregon for all adults and starting Friday, July 24, for all children 5 and up, in all indoor public spaces and outdoors when physical distancing isn’t possible. To help Oregonians understand the requirement, the Oregon Health Authority has created a website resource that aims to be a clearinghouse of the latest information about face coverings and masks, from requirements to FAQs to tips about how to effectively wear them. According to OHA,

emerging evidence shows that wearing a mask help can help protect you and the people you love from spreading and catching COVID-19. COVID-19 is spread by respiratory droplets when people cough, sneeze, talk, laugh or sing. Face coverings help contain those droplets. The virus can be spread by people who do not have symptoms and likely don’t know they are infected. Properly worn, a face covering should cover a person’s nose and mouth and fit snugly against the sides of the face. Many types of face coverings can be used, including hand-

made cloth face coverings, scarves, bandanas, and more. They should be washed frequently after using. OHA advises Oregonians to work together to flatten the curve and lower the risk of transmission of the virus by: • Covering faces when six feet of physical distancing is not possible; • Avoiding large crowds and limiting social gatherings; • Washing hands; • Staying home when sick. Officials: ‘Unclaimed funds’ likely scam The Pilot

Oregon officials are warning consumers against responding to text messages offering access to lost or unclaimed funds held by the state of Oregon. The Department of State Lands (DSL), which oversees the state’s Unclaimed Property Program, has seen a recent increase in reports of text messages urging people to follow links and claim sums of money. Individuals who receive these messages are advised to not click on website links contained in the messages, as they could be scams. “We’ve seen messages

that direct people to websites that are misleading and may be used to collect individuals’ personal or financial information,” said Claudia Ciobanu, Trust Property Manager with DSL. “The best way to check for unclaimed property is directly through the Oregon Unclaimed Property website.” “I’d also be wary of any site that asks people to pay to claim funds,” Ciobanu added. “It is free to claim your money back from the state, and you can file a claim at any time on our website.” The State of Oregon receives about $70 million

every year in unclaimed assets, like forgotten checks, bank accounts, and security deposits from financial institutions and businesses. It currently holds $740 million in unclaimed property for owners or their heirs. Those interested in checking whether they have unclaimed funds should visit the state’s Unclaimed Property website at unclaimed.oregon.gov and search for their name in the registry. The DSL recommends that anyone contacted by an organization offering access to Oregon unclaimed funds call the Unclaimed Property program at (503) 986-5200.

PORT ORFORD —“Finding My Voice with Words & Pictures,” a show of 13 new sculptures by Port Orford artist Janet Pretti, plus a new book designed and written by the artist, will be on display at the Hawthorne Gallery starting Saturday, July 25, and continuing through the end of 2020. The public is invited to a reception which is part of the general Art Walk (with masks and social distancing) that afternoon from 2-6 p.m. The Hawthorne Gallery is located at 517 Jefferson St., on U.S. Highway 101 right next to Battle Rock, adjacent to the Hawthorne’s Redfish Restaurant. As befits an educator — Pretti recently retired from her role of Dean of the Curry Campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College in Brookings where she helped coordinate the construction of a 25,000 square-foort facility, organize the yearly writing conference in Gold Beach, and oversee the entire teaching program — she has fashioned a beautifully written and illustrated

book which illuminates the process whereby she spent the last five years bringing these 13 sculptures to life in bronze, wood, found objects and painted words. I recently went down to visit Pretti’s studio in the basement of the home on Garrison Lake in Port Orford, which she has shared for 32 years with her husband Lonnie Pretti, a retired commercial fisherman whom she describes in her book as having enriched her life with “at least one good bellylaugh a day.” While in her studio, I discovered that the figure in “Finding My Voice” is removable, and when I removed it I was able to see more clearly the 33 steps in-

Oregon Health Authority offers online COVID-19 test site locator Oregon Health Authority offers online COVID-19 test site locator The Oregon Health Authority has published a COVID-19 test site locator online to help Oregonians across the state find testing sites in their community. The interactive map is available on pages in both English and Spanish and can be toggled into multiple other languages: healthoregon.org/covid19testing or healthoregon. org/pruebasdecovid19 (Spanish) People who experience COVID-19 symptoms, including fever, cough or shortness of breath, should contact a health care provider to discuss whether to be tested. Health care providers determine whether testing is appropriate based on symptoms and test availability in their area. “Removing barriers to testing is important to help Oregonians stay healthy and to slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Dean Sidelinger, MD, state epidemiologist and state health officer. “This new resource can help people find ongoing testing locations in their community, which is especially important for people who don’t have a primary care provider.” The COVID-19 testing

site locator was developed by Castlight, a health navigation platform that connects the information of hundreds of health vendors, benefits resources and plan designs into an online tool. Oregonians can locate nearby testing sites by entering their address or selecting state, county and zip. Oregonians should call the COVID-19 testing site before they go to learn about testing criteria, availability and hours. Oregon’s testing guidance encourages testing for anyone with symptoms in consultation with a health care provider. If testing resources are limited, the following groups should be prioritized: Healthcare workers and first responders (EMS, public safety workers) Residents, staff, children, and others in non-hospital congregate settings (e.g., residential care facilities, group homes, schools, agricultural workplaces, food processing plants, jails or prisons, shelters) • Workers who provide direct care or services in multiple group facilities or who provide in-home services (e.g., hospice care workers, physical or occupational therapists, in-home personal care workers) • Essential front-line service workers who have

regular contact with large numbers of people (e.g., those working in grocery, pharmacy, transit, delivery, and other critical infrastructure services) • People 65 years of age or older People with underlying medical conditions, including, but not limited to, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, obesity, and immunocompromising conditions • People who identify as Black, African American, Latinx, American Indian/ Alaska Native, Asian, Asian American or Pacific Islander • People who identify as having a disability • People whose first language is not English • Pregnant women • People whose condition requires hospitalization • People who, within 14 days of their symptom onset, had close contact with a confirmed or presumptive COVID-19 case The data on the testing locator was submitted to Castlight by both the OHA and local public health authorities. OHA cannot guarantee that people will be able to get tested at one of the sites. It is always best to contact a health care provider about getting a COVID-19 test.

In notes from the board’s July 15 meeting, Superintendent of Schools Tim Wilson said “on-site every day for every student is still the priority goal.” However, a hybrid model of attending school on-site for two days and online for two days, is being prepared — as well as a fully online option. He anticipates that a decision will be announced around Aug. 12. Port Orford-Langlois Driftwood elementary in Port Orford and Pacific High School at the north end of Curry Countyu are governed by the Port Orford-Langlois school district.

In a Facebook post, administrators told parents they are working on plans for the coming year. “Please know that we are working on options for families for returning to school. Our number one goal is to get the students and staff back in school as safe and as much as possible,” the message said. “Thank you all for your input in the surveys. We appreciate all your feedback and know that we have read each and every survey.” They said schooling for next year will be more structured than it was in the spring (when campuses were closed because of the virus), whether it be in school, online, or hybrid. We will be releasing our plan in the next two weeks. Thank you for your patience

as we continue to work through the guidance that we have received and the more updated information that we keep receiving from the governor’s office.” Athletics Although the governing body for California’s interscholastic athletics this week delayed fall sports such as football until December or later — Oregon schools may have a shorter delay. The Oregon State Athletic Aassociation said Wednesday that its board remains committed to providing school sports and activities opportunities for students this fall, provided it’s safe to do so and within parameters of various rules. The OSAA executive board will meet again the week of Aug. 3 and may update directives to schools at that time.

engendered by the marvelous possibilities offered by Dr. Google who has brought the world to our fingertips) to what she likes to call “The Age of Meaning.” When I went down to her studio and then spent several days carefully reading her wonderful little book, I felt like it was the most meaningful art exhibit I had encountered in our neck of the woods in a long time, and wanted to share it with all of you. And not all the news is grim. Pretti’s “Aging in Place” is a very dear testimony to matrimony, and her “Joy” celebrates her passionate commitment to education, and her delight in having been able to assist the Curry Campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College. On the page about “Joy” Pretti writes:

“One day, on the way to work, I drove by a family parked at an overlook, just as a child leaped into the air, shouting and pointing. I knew without a doubt that she had seen a whale spouting for the first time. The day before a campus project had had a major setback. It was the split second image of her pure joy, discovery and wonder that inspired me to forge ahead through all the construction issues and the unexpected conflicts and chaos that its transformative change brought after opening. For the next five years I felt a rush of joy every time I rounded the corner into the parking lot and saw the campus ahead. As I prepared for retirement, I wanted a reminder of that improbable journey.” In this difficult and troubled year, here is a show to lift your spirits. It will be there through December.
