More than 50 people rallied to reopen Oregon in Brookings on Sunday. The state has been mostly shut down since Gov. Kate Brown issued stayhome orders in March due to novel coronavirus concerns. Reopen rallies were held throughout the state this weekend, most occurring during a drizzly Saturday. “We need to open Oregon, especially Curry County,” said local organizer Dianna Blazo on Sunday in Brookings. “We want our county to open. People want to work. They don’t want the government handouts. They want to get to work. If people are that worried about it they don’t have to come out shopping, send someone else. But for those of us that want to work, open it up.” There were plenty of people in agreement judging by the honking, thumbsup and applauding coming from the cars and trucks that passed in front of the group lined along Highway 101 in front of Goldilocks Antiques and its next-door neighbor to the south Coast Auto Center. This reporter did not see any negative response to the crowd from passersby during the hour-long rally geared to-

ward easing COVID-19 restrictions. To date, Curry County has had four confirmed COVID-19 cases and zero deaths. All four have recovered. It’s been more than a week since the last confirmed case. Curry Health Network can do rapid testing, drive-up testing and antibody testing and said it has over a month’s supply of personal protective equipment. Blazo volunteers with the Curry County Republican Central Committee. Many who rallied were volunteers with the local Republican committee. Blazo and others eagerly pointed out that the rally and its reopening message were not about politics. “This is for everybody,” Blazo said. “I know it’s not just Republicans that want this. We want everybody to be able to go to work. It’s sad that we are not being allowed.” A day earlier, a dozen people rallied in front of the Curry County Courthouse, while the largest protest was held at the Capitol in Salem. On Sunday, attendees in Brookings waved U.S. flags and a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag and had signs with slogans like “Reopen Oregon,” “Don’t Quarantine the Healthy,” and “Everyone is Essential.” See Rally, Page A6

Port of Brookings Harbor Commissioners canceled all events through the end of the year and extended the closure of Beachfront RV Park to May 25 during a special meeting Thursday, April 30, via teleconference. GOLD BEACH — Curry County Commissioners unanimously repealed a ban on short-term transient lodging stays of less than 28 days in the unincorporated areas of the county on Wednesday. It takes effect at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. The County is also requesting reopen the county for business. The County’s vote comes after Gold Beach City Council did the same on Monday. Brookings City Council repealed its ban, 3-2, during a special meeting onWednesday, May 6. Their change begins on May 8 as well. Each government entity put the prohibitions in place following Gov. Kate Brown’s stay-home orders to curb the spread of COVID-19. County-run campgrounds were also opened following the governor’s limited opening of some state parks, outdoor recreation facilities, and areas across Oregon. On March 27, the Commissioners adopted an order that closed all transient lodging facilities. Last week, they discussed rescinding that order but it was voted down 2-1.

Police Department Dispatch regarding a report of a physical dispute in progress at a residence on Court Street in Harbor. There were several subsequent 911 calls regarding the incident and a report of gunfire. Sheriff’s deputies responded and stopped a vehicle leaving that location while another deputy contacted the victim. Two people were arrested in connection to the dispute where one shot was reportedly fired from a handgun. Joshua Hall, 23, and Nellie Stevens-Gaither, 24 both of Harbor, were arrested when leaving the scene and transported to the Curry County Jail.

Hall was lodged on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon, third-degree assault and four counts of recklessly endangering related to a physical assault and intentionally firing a weapon toward others. Stevens-Gaither was lodged on suspicion of third-degree assault and pointing a firearm at another person. Both suspects participated in an escalating domestic conflict and took matters into their own hands when they tried to intervene in a family member’s relationship and legal residential status thereby placing many more people in harm’s way, the Sheriff’s Office reported. Deputies arrived within minutes

of 911 calls coming from the victim’s residence and neighbors. Additional interviews and further investigation is ongoing as the circumstances before and during this incident unfold. Charges may change or be added based on the outcome of the investigation by Curry County deputies and detectives assigned to the case. All information has been forwarded to the Curry County District Attorney’s Office.

Country-run Campgrounds County staff also announced at the Commissioners meeting that on Tuesday the Governor lifted the ban on campgrounds, and therefore Boice Cope County Park, a campground, would be opening on Friday, May 8. Staff further explained safety protocols are being put in place to help minimize the spread of COVID19. Due to needed repairs, Lobster Creek Campground will remain closed until further notice.

Sheriff: Gold Beach man arrested for rape A Gold Beach man was jailed on an alleged rape charge and other sex

charges involving juveniles on T h u r s d a y, April 23, the Curry County SherHunter Jaidon iff’s Office Rose reported. On Thursday, April 23, information was disclosed to detectives from the Curry County Sheriff’s Office during an unrelated investigation that led detectives to contact three juvenile females regarding several alleged sex crimes. Following interviews, a forensic interview and a review of digital evidence,

detectives arrested Gold Beach resident Hunter Jaidon Rose, 23. He was jailed on suspicion of first-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse, first-degree sodomy, sexual penetration with an object, incest, second-degree sex abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor. Detectives from the Curry County Sheriff’s Office will be continuing the investigation which possibly may lead to additional victims. DEAR ABBY: I had weight-loss surgery a year ago. I’m now off all medications (high blood pressure, antidepressants, etc.) and take only one multivitamin daily. I feel like I’m 25 again. However, I have also changed mentally. After many years of being a zombie on antidepressants, I feel like I have finally “awakened.” I come from a dysfunctional, abusive childhood. My father abused my mother. I was diagnosed with dysthymia years ago, and I feel the diagnosis was correct. I now feel my dysthymia has turned more into anxiety than depression. I’m no longer afraid of speaking up and, after 20 years, I actually have opinions of my own. Needless to say, my family (husband, grown children and in-laws) are not used to this side of me. I find myself feeling resentful, anxious and envious of certain immediate family and in-law family dynamics now. I don’t want to upset my family by being so vocal and opinionated, but I don’t want to get back on mind-altering prescriptions either. I also have little faith that counseling will do much good. I’m afraid I’ll be pushed into taking meds again. I

I’m in a committed relationship, and when I discussed this with my partner, we had a difference of opinion. She believes that happy individuals in committed relationships do not travel with other people. She believes happy couples should travel together and not independently. Is that controlling? I have traveled independently in prior committed relationships, and this has never been an issue. Should I honor her

request or deny it? She is pushing me to respect this rule and says it applies to her as well because she believes “females” let loose when they are away from their significant others. I get the distinct feeling that if I travel independently, there will be an emotional price to pay, or she will do something in my absence that will change the dynamics of our relationship. — LOVE OR CONTROL DEAR LOVE: There are already issues that will change the dynamics of your relationship — your partner’s insecurity and need to control, and your need for some freedom. Letters to the Editor Gold a person of integrity Editor: I do not personally know Sue Gold, never have met her. However, I have watched and listened to her as a Curry County Commissioner and find her to be a person of integrity. She listens carefully, is thoughtful and spends time deciding her vote on items during the meetings. She is not hesitant to ask that an item be held or postponed until further information is gathered. I have also seen her treated rudely, dismissively at times which is particularly troubling. Ms. Gold and I are unlikely to be on the same political wavelengths for a number of reasons but I do believe she has the county’s best interests first and foremost. Americans must protest Editor: Progressives declare they care about humanity and capitalists only care about money. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Bill Gates, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton all claim the ends justify the means and destruction of civil liberties are based upon science. Science states coronaviruses follow parabolic curves. They end when herd immunity occurs, and infection dies out. Flattening the curve by draconian measures does not change the number of people with weak immune systems who will die. Shutting down elective medical care means people will die when tumors metastasize if biopsies are not given in time. Stroke victims will die if not given care. Patients will die if brain surgeries are delayed. Shutdowns affect the stock market. Shutdowns cause business failures, increased domestic violence and suicides. Medical technocrats sometimes reduce man to an arrangement of molecules made by blind chance. They see man as a competitive animal. They do not understand man was made in the image of God, with a body, soul, spirit and free will. Atheistic material evolution gives no hope or purpose to life. Reality based upon material or energy shaped by chance, without God-given absolutes and unalienable rights, is certain to end up in tyranny. State governors are in the executive branch and are sworn to uphold laws, not make laws. Their orders can be guidelines, but they cannot be enforced by criminal sanctions, because they

have not been passed by the legislature. Under humanism, man becomes the measure of all things and leads to Orwellian totalitarianism. Doctors at Stanford University believe models used by the CDC are false. COVID-19 is more widespread than believed. With more infections discovered the infection mortality rate is closer to .001 and the seasonal flu, rather than the 3.4% promoted by the World Health Organization. The United Nations is a front for one-world utopians who use pandemics to promote police state Orwellian lockdowns. Freedom-loving Americans must protest. Steve Johnston Brookings

Two good choices for Commissioner Editor: I hope that Sue Gold will be re-elected to her Curry County Commissioner position (No. 2). I find it remarkable that during this pandemic health crisis, Sue is refusing to take political donations for her campaign from businesses or individuals. She would rather see the money go to help the people who are in need. I’d call that putting your money where your mouth is. I also like the way she seems to be fair and careful in considering every item that comes up on the Commissioners’ agenda. She is an expert in financial management which allows her to make the best use of Curry County’s limited financial resources. We are lucky to have her looking after our welfare. Let’s vote to keep her. We also have another big opportunity. Dennis Triglia is a write-in candidate for Curry County Commissioner Position 3. He will be running against Court Boice. Dennis is a former Brookings City Councilor whose quiet and consistent support for multiple organizations in Curry County have made a difference for years. He’s a scientist, so his habit is to do his research and understand an issue completely before speaking up. The decisions he made as a Councilor on behalf of the citizens of Brookings were well-considered and thoughtful. I think he will bring that thoughtfulness, honesty, sense of responsibility, and understanding of complex issues to the county as a Commissioner (Position 3). Ballots are coming out as we speak. The county board is going to revisit its decision next week. Sporthaven Beach access, launch ramps and cleaning stations are still open to the public at the Port. The subject of reopening was brought up by Port Commissioner Richard Heap. “It’s my thought that the reopening of the county should be coordinated with the county commissioners, the cities and the ports,” Heap said. “I think we need to be thoughtful and deliberate about how we reopen things up. To the extent that we can, I certainly would like to see the effort to reopen this county be coordinated.”

he Lord took my beautiful wife at 5:50 p.m. on April 29, 2020, as he must have needed a great dance instructor. He ripped a giant hole in my life as I lost the most wonderful woman I have ever known. I will forever cherish the 40 years we spent together and would love to do them all over again. Sandy was loved by all as she was such a loving, caring and giving person. She requested no funeral services and that there be no sadness as she wants everyone to remember having fun. She wants you to remember the fun times spent dancing which was her passion and for you to

know that she is smiling down on you. Watch for the signs she will be sending you to let you know she is around. The cancer she had was brutal, fast, extremely painful and fatal and I am mad. She is survived by her husband David Griffith and her precious cats, Runt, Mojo and Sam as well as a flock of Steller Jays that want their breakfast of peanuts every morning. As her husband I just want to thank the many friends of hers that have made her life so full and enjoyable. rookings resident Eleanor Anderson, age 83, passed away on April 3, 2020 in Eugene, Oregon. She was born October 15, 1936 in Los Angeles, California, to Benny and Betty Siff. Eleanor graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1954. She married James Anderson in 1960 and was married for 60 years. She and Jim lived in several

cities in California, Nevada and Oregon before coming to Brookings in 2001. Ellie loved animals, especially St. Bernards, and they had three over their 60 years of marriage. Ellie also had a special talent as a buyer of women’s clothing, and was very successful in running the seven different clothing stores we owned, from Eagle Rock, Calif. to Bend, Ore. Many of the stores were in beach cities along the Southern California coast. Ellie is survived by her husband Jim and was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Joyce Thimas. fornia in 1934. She retired from the State of California and moved to Harbor, Oregon, in 1987. She is survived by her four children; Donna Tuma of Brookings, Darlene Fennema of San Jose , Calif., Shari English of Harbor/ Live Oak, Calif., and Robert Erway of Harbor. She has six grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren. Rest in peace, Mama. Private memorial will be held later.

Sweet Potato Black Bean Enchiladas

Ingredients: • 2 medium sweet potatoes (3 cups diced) •1 red onion • 15-ounce can black beans (or 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans) • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped • 1/2 tablespoon cumin • 1 tablespoon chili powder • ½ teaspoon garlic powder • ½ teaspoon kosher salt & ground black pepper • 2 cups salsa verde (or homemade tomatillo salsa) • 8 ounces Colby jack cheese, shredded • 8 8-inch whole wheat flour tortillas (or 10 6-inch) • Sour cream Directions: Preheat oven to 350°. Peel and dice the sweet potatoes. Place them in a pot and cover with water; add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, around 12 to 15 minutes. Finely dice one red onion. Drain and rinse the black beans. Chop 1/4 cup cilantro. In a large bowl, combine the cooked sweet potato, black beans, red onion, 1/2 tablespoon cumin, 1 tablespoon chili powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, and ground pepper. Mix to combine. Warm the tortillas for a minute in the microwave, or in a pan for a few seconds per side, so that they are flexible. In a large baking dish, spread 1 cup of the salsa verde. Fill each tortilla with a heaping ½ cup scoop of the filling, add 1/4 cup cheese, and roll it up. Place each enchilada seam-side down in the baking dish. Repeat for the remaining tortillas. When all enchiladas are in the dish, top with the remaining salsa verde and the remaining cheese. Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted. Serve garnished with sour cream (mixed with a few drops of water to loosen it) and chopped cilantro. Bridging the Future of Healthcare

In Curry County at press time, COVID cases have been relatively low when compared to other counties in Oregon numbering a mere four. The COVID-19 impact on local fishing guides and charter businesses has been devastating. Val Early and her husband, Gary, have been involved in the fishing industry for decades. Both have been licensed guides in Oregon since 1978 but have also guided in Alaska and California. Val sits in on the Oregon State Marine Board which is an appointed position by the governor and has her finger on the pulse of fishing locally. She is seeing in real-time what COVID-19 is doing to those who make their livelihoods on the waterways and she says it is not good. “When the gover-

Curry County.” Add into the mix there was uncertainty about access to entry and exit points for boats due to a variety of entity closures including state parks, federal boat launches, and some local jurisdiction closures and she said that makes it “all but impossible for the guides to conduct their trade.” Early said of the closures that “I understand the need for them and I think most reasonable people in the fishing industry supports the governments’ installation of distancing measures for safety concerns” but concedes “they couldn’t have come at a worse time for area fishing.”

“We were in the last part of winter steelhead season and lost that, now the (COVID) closures have carried into spring salmon season,” she said. “This is this really short amount of time on the calendar when these guides make their money for the entire year... take that away and they have nothing to fall back on.” Val explains that many guides are self-employed and as such may not have access to unemployment. There have been provisions in state unemployment for “gig workers, self-employed, and independent contractors, but nothing has been rolled out at this time.” “Most guides are independent contractors, very few pay into unemployment.” Early says that none of the guides she has been in contact with have received any federal assistance money yet. “Most have applied for it and they are still waiting,” she said. The number of guides with addresses in Curry County numbers 50, and another 381 includes all types of guides such as biking, fishing and tours, who admit to working the South Coast region. Also, eight registered charter outfits work the same area according to Val. With talk of reopening

the state swirling, Val said it may not matter. “If it happens, at all, that might help a little but the summer season will be nowhere near where it should have been.” Maintaining self-distancing will still be a key to moving forward and Val feels the industry can meet that standard and more. “We need to have our protocols in place and make it work. I think it is possible to maintain some distance within the boats as much as possible, but instilling additional protocols to protect guides and guests is doable too,” she said. “We usually wear gloves as part of what we do so that shouldn’t be an issue.” She admits it won’t always be textbook perfect. “There will be times briefly when guide and guest will be in closer contact than CDC guidelines but overall I think it will be fine,” she said. “I believe after all of this our guides are going to be really cognizant of that and will be doing everything they can to protect their customers and themselves while doing their jobs.” The bottom line for Val, and others that bring their expertise to Curry County’s waterways, is they all agree that they need to get back to work. “We have obligations, families to support,” Val said.
