Most voters have yet to vote in primary election By DAVID RUPKALVIS The Pilot

With one week to go until election day, the vast majority of voters in Curry County have yet to cast ballots. According to information released from the Curry County Elections Department, as of May 9, 13.41% of eligible voters have cast ballots.

In total, 2,563 voters have returned their mail ballots and 2,517 ballots have been accepted. In Curry County, there are 19,107 eligible voters. Voters in Curry County are helping choose Republican and Democrat candidates for governor as well as District 4 congressional candidates. But locally the big draw is a three-per-

son race for county commissioners with candidates looking to replace Chris Paasch, who is stepping aside after his term ends at the end of the year. Brookings City Councilor Brad Alcorn, former Commissioner George Rhodes and homeless advocate Beth Barker-Hidalgo are running for the seat. If no candidate receives 50% of the votes cast, the top two will advance to the

general election in November. Voters will also decide whether to renew the five-year local option tax levy for the Sixes Rural Fire District and whether to approve a tax levy for fire equipment in Gold Beach. All mail-in ballots must be dropped off at a ballot box or mailed by May 17 to be counted in the primary election. Final results won't be available on election day.

BANDON — Lucas Vanderlip shot the competitive round of his life for Brookings-Harbor’s boys golf team on Tuesday, but all he wanted to talk about was his teammates. Vanderlip finished second at the district golf tournament at Bandon Crossings, losing a sudden-death playoff against Bandon’s Peyton Simonds. Meanwhile, Brookings-Harbor’s team placed third behind champion St. Mary’s and Bandon, and in the process earned a trip to next week’s state tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. “It’s about the team,” Vanderlip said. “We made it to state. Nobody expected us to. It’s going to be a fun ride home (tonight).” Brookings-Harbor’s scores for the two days were 387 and 334, a 53-shot improvement. “They played phenomenal (today),” Brookings-Harbor coach Max Whitley said. “It was fun to see.” It came after the Bruins played poorly in the opening round Monday. “They worked hard,” Whitley said. “They deserve it.” While Vanderlip shot even par 144 for the two days, Josh Serna shot a 78 on Monday and an 83 on Tuesday to place sixth overall. The other three members of the Bruins all improved on Tuesday, especially Fabian Villa and Fletcher McLennan. “Fabian was on fire,” Whitley

said of Villa, who shot an 82 after never having shot 100 before (he shot 111 on Monday). McLennan, meanwhile, shot an even 100, his lifetime best, after a 142 on Monday. Waylon Fletcher improved from 123 to 112. Throughout the day, Vanderlip was involved in a great dual with Bandon’s Simonds. Vanderlip shot the lowest round of the tournament Tuesday, a 3-under 69, including a birdie on the final hole to tie Simonds, who started the day one shot ahead, and force the playoff. “I couldn’t have asked for a better finish, with the clutch birdie on 18,” he said. A playoff wasn’t likely after he took a nine on the fourth hole Monday. But he matched Simonds big shot for big shot during Tuesday’s round. Many of the other players and coaches were watching Vanderlip’s birdie (he just missed an eagle chip) on the 18th hole to force the playoff and then they followed along in the playoff. Both Vanderlip and Simonds made difficult par putts on the first extra hole. The momentum switched to Simonds on the second hole when Vanderlip’s drive ran through the fairway and into rough under a tree. All Vanderlip could do from there was punch out while Simonds hit his approach shot to 10 feet. When Vanderlip couldn’t get up and down from well short of the green, Simonds won with a routine two-putt par. Losing the playoff didn’t take away from the great round,

Vanderlip said. “I’m really happy,” he said, adding that he was looking ahead to next week. “I’m excited for state,” Vanderlip said. “There are going to be some great players there.” Brookings-Harbor’s girls never got a chance to qualify as a team because three of the players were unavailable for their district tournament, also at Bandon Crossings. Two of those players wound up sick on the eve of the event. Ivy Tuttle had rounds of 109 and 128 for the Bruins and Acacia Pringle shot a 131 on Monday and a 117 on Tuesday. St. Mary’s edged Marist Catholic for the team title and Marshfield took the third berth for the girls state tournament.

Starnes makes final push as campaign closes By DAVID RUPKALVIS The Pilot

For the second time in three months, Patrick Starnes brought his campaign for governor to the South Coast, this time stopping to meet voters in Brookings.

Less than a week before the Democratic candidate for governor is chosen, Patrick Starnes is confident he is heading in the right direction. And although voters have already begun casting ballots, Starnes said there is still work to be done before a winner is announced. "Less than 15% have voted in the Democrat primary," Starnes said after visiting Curry County on Tuesday. "They just not jumping on hard with the two establishment candidates." Starnes said a recent poll shows 55% of Democrats are undecided heading into the final days of the race. He expects a tight result, so he is visiting every portion of the state during the final days. Most of the Democratic candidates have spent their time in the major metropolitan cities, but Starnes made his second visit to the South Coast this week. "As a rural Democrat who grew up in a rural city, I have a better chance to beat Betsy Johnson and whoever the Republicans put up," Starnes said. "I don't

have the baggage of being there 15 years." At his visit at the Democrat Party headquarters in Brookings, Starnes said an enthusiastic group of Democrats turned out and asked hard questions. "They were asking about campaign finance reform, healthcare, transportation issues for the people in rural areas," he said. "They were asking about getting healthcare workers. They have a real deficit of healthcare housing. One woman said she had to all the way to Grants Pass. Real kitchen issues is what I've been concentrating on." For years, those issues have included campaign finance reform, something Starnes has been working on for quite a while. Starnes said his message of getting big money out of politics is resonating with voters. "People are ready to clean it up," he said. "It's embarrassing we're in the bottom five. I think we're getting a lot of tread from that. We're not taking and PAC money and we won't in the general election." answers that benefit both sides. And she loves it. She had no plan to run for a higher office until she learned Congressman Peter DeFazio was retiring. Then she had to answer a question - stay in a job she loves or run for Congress to protect the work DeFazio has been doing. “That was a question I had to ask myself and my husband,” she said while visiting the South Coast last week. “I love my job, D.C. is a mess and it’s a 24-hour round trip.” When trying to decide what to do, Hoyle said she talked to her cousin, who put it all on the line. “He said, ‘you just told me you thought democracy was under attack. How can you sit on the sideline,’” Hoyle remembered. That’s when she decided to make the run. And after receiving endorsements from DeFazio and both Oregon senators, Hoyle seems like the favorite to win the Democratic nomination for the 4th Congressional seat. If she does, Hoyle will face Republican Alek Skarlatos in the general election in November, with the winner replacing DeFazio. “I believe we benefit from having Peter DeFazio,” Hoyle said. “He’s a fighter and stands up for working people. I think I do much of the same.” Hoyle is quick to point out she is the only candidate in the race that has won a race higher than school board. Before winning the statewide labor commissioner’s seat, she served in the Legislature, where she was the majority leader of the Democrat caucus. Serving in the Legislature at a time where the House was split almost evenly helped Hoyle learn to work with both parties to get things done. “I was an effective enough legislator that when I ran for labor commissioner, I had support from both business and labor,” Hoyle said. “I won both Coos and Curry counties.” Please see VAL HOYLE Page A2

"There's going to be power when Oregon has shown success," he said. "That's what I remember as a kid. They agreed to clean up beaches, they agreed to do the bottle bill." As governor, Starnes said he will make regular visits to the South Coast. "I'm going to continue to travel," he said. "I'm just going to continue visiting all 36 counties. I want one Oregon. "I think with these common issues, things that bring us together, we can." Starnes said with the campaign winding down, the outcome is wide open. "It's hard not knowing," he admitted. "When it's 53% undecided, it's wide open." In his final pitch to voters, Starnes said he hopes people turn out and make their voices heard. "It's really important that

Treasure of lucky beach-gold prospectors may still be out there They had brought plenty of provisions with them for the journey, and the hunting was good; so they were able to live all summer without leaving their diggings. As their flour sacks were emptied of food, they were promptly filled with “flour gold” from the beach. And at the end of the summer, they returned home to the Willamette Valley, their pack animals creaking under the weight of hundreds of pounds of pure gold. They were now both rich men. Lots of miners had come back from California with gold, so the brothers’ sudden wealth didn’t attract much attention. Nor did their calculated vagueness when telling friends and neighbors where they’d spent their summer arouse any suspicions. All miners were like that. Nobody wanted to tell a bunch of potential claim jumpers where they had their stakes planted. Possession was nine tenths of the law, and anyway plenty of people in 1849 were perfectly willing to commit a secret murder on a lonely stretch of trail to seize control of a lucrative claim. So when the next spring came, the brothers were easily able to slip away from any prying eyes and hurry back to the beach to spend another season making themselves richer. And the same thing happened again the next year. In fact, it wasn’t until 1853 that someone got wise and figured out where the brothers were going. Whoever it was that figured that out was much less discreet than the Grouleaux brothers had been. The word was out almost at once, and a colossal

Imagine you’re a gold prospector from the Willamette Valley, on your way to the California gold fields in the first year of the 1848 gold rush. You’re a little late to the party, and you’ve chosen to try to reach the gold fields in a somewhat unusual way: By going over the Coast Range to the beach, and traveling south along the coast. As you make your way southward by the great ocean, you reach a broad expanse of black sand. And when the sun hits it just right, you can see it’s actually glittering … with tiny flakes and grains of gold. You’re all alone on the beach. There aren’t even any other footprints. Apparently nobody else was crazy enough to try to travel to the gold fields via Coos Bay. Everyone else in the area, such as there are, has decamped inland to the gold fields. It’s just you, on the uninhabited edge of a continent, crunching a trillion dollars’ worth of gold under your feet. SUCH WAS THE situation in which the Grouleaux brothers, Charles and Peter, found themselves in in the spring of 1849, near the mouth of the Coquille River in what today is Douglas County. (By the way, the Grouleaux brothers are called “John and Peter Groslius” in some sources.) Naturally, the brothers abandoned all ideas of going to California now. They settled in and got busy separating the yellow gold from the black sand — pounds and pounds of it.

gold rush ensued as miners flocked to the beaches. “Soon a thousand men milled about on the black sands, staking claims for miles up and down the beach,” Ruby El Hult writes in her book. “Cabins, stores, saloons and gambling houses were hastily erected, becoming the boom town of Randolph. Whiskey flowed so freely that the stream along which the best diggings were located became known as Whiskey Run.” Very quickly after that, the Grouleaux brothers sold their claims to two of the newcomers, the McNamara brothers. They cheerfully remarked that they had made enough money off the beach in their first four undisturbed years to last a lifetime. (They didn’t mention any figures, but the McNamara brothers pulled $80,000 worth out the first year after they bought the claims, and that was after the Grouleaux boys had spent five years skimming the cream.) and set out northward on the Randolph Trail, a beaten path along the Coast Range foothills to Coos Bay that followed roughly the same route as Seven Devils Road today. But they had $40,000 worth of gold in their saddlebags, and the two of them were almost celebrities in Randolph. Both of them were very nervous about the possibility that they might be robbed on the trail. Highway robbery was common there, since the bad guys knew that successful miners had to use the trail to carry their gold out. So the boys scouted a good spot that they thought they could find again, and cached the gold in two gunpowder cans under a cedar stump. Then they continued on their way. Well, you probably have already guessed what happened next. In fine buried-treasure style, they lost track of where they stashed the two cans. Neither of them returned for many years — they already had five years’ worth on which

little bits of local legend. FIFTY MORE YEARS went by. Then, in 1922, Peter Grouleaux’s granddaughter, Lillie Tully, came to town. She had a try for the gold as well, enlisting the help of a local timber cruiser. But after a year or so of hunting, they too were disappointed. A few years later, in 1931, a rumor started circulating — a very credible one, later given added weight by an article in the Portland Oregonian newspaper — that the treasure had been found. According to the rumor, a young couple out prospecting had spotted a rusty gun barrel sticking out from under an old stump and investigated. They’d found two old gunpowder cans containing 150 pounds of fine gold. After that, the two had left the area as quickly as possible, because the gold had been on private land and they were afraid if anyone knew where they’d gotten it, the landowner and possibly Lillie Tully would try to claim it. So, was this rumor true? Maybe.

It wasn’t until 20 years later, in 1873, that Peter, by then the only surviving brother (Charles had died in England), came back to the Coquille to “withdraw” his gold. Peter found the entire landscape so utterly changed that he had no idea where to even start looking for the distinctive cedar-tree stump under which he’d stashed the cans. There were places where the Randolph Trail had changed completely, with old sections overgrown and barely discernible; there were other parts that had been burned over by a forest fire, which had destroyed all the snags, stumps, and other dry wood in its path. Peter got some friends to help him, promising to split the gold with them, but their efforts were in vain. Other members of the Randolph community joined in as well. But, nobody found the gold, and after a decade or so, the whole thing simmered down into one of those

How much will a name change change? By Tim Lydon It was late November in Alaska and a lousy day for deer hunting. Rough seas rocked our small boat, and when we finally stumbled ashore in Squaw Bay, we found another hunter already there. He glanced at us unhappily, then walked toward the best deer habitat. With just six hours of daylight left, all we could do was sit, watching and thinking. A week earlier, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland had ordered her department to remove the derogatory word “squaw” from any place names on federal lands. It means new names are coming for this bay and over 600 other features on public lands across the country. A year earlier, while working with a local nonprofit, I moderated a Facebook group page about the popular national forest surrounding the bay. The page is a place to trade stories and information. One morning my friend Dave, a local charter boat captain, posted a picture from the bay and commented, “nice place for a name change.” This was before the Biden administration, and Dave was only musing. Name changes are not uncommon here. In recent years, streets, mountains, and a whole city have adopted Alaska Native names. And in 2015, as he prepared to visit Alaska, then-President Obama issued a famous – and popular – order renaming the state’s highest peak from McKinley to Denali, a nod to the Athabaskan people who have lived here for millennia. I didn’t think anything of Dave’s comment, but when I checked back later, I saw he’d been dog-piled. Scores of people, mostly men, puffed up their online chests and hurled insults. They cursed, called him a snowflake or far worse, and lamented Alaska’s descent into “wokeness.” I think I was a weak moderator. I deleted some abusive comments, kicked out a few people, and politely called for civility. But later, when Dave read the comments, he deleted his post and left the group. With that, our page lost a great source of local history and science. There’s a lot to untangle from this little squall in Alaska’s remote corner of the Internet, including the tenor of today’s culture wars, which normalizes bullying. Then there’s the word itself. Some commenters schooled Dave on etymology, citing a popular theory that squaw evolved from an Algonquin term meaning “woman.” But it was a selective take. No one mentioned that for centuries the Americanized usage was contemptuous and dehumanizing. Like any racist slur, the term

These things matter, especially when we consider the violence disproportionately inflicted against Indigenous women and girls, an issue still unfamiliar to many. In recent years, tribes, states, and others have identified thousands of unsolved cases of missing or murdered Indigenous women and girls and shown that a mix of bias and jurisdictional issues on tribal lands feeds a disparity in justice. In response, many Western states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, and Washington have assigned task forces or taken other actions. Congress and both the Biden and Trump administrations have also acted with the 2020 Savannah Act, which improves Justice Department coordination on the issue, and the creation of a new Bureau of Indian Affairs unit for such crimes. Haaland’s name-change order skips past these specifics and simply states that squaw is a racist term. But she does remind the public of the federal government’s long-standing efforts to wipe racial slurs from place names. In 1962, for instance, efforts began to remove a racist term for African American people. In 1974, the same occurred for a slur against Japanese people that originated in the World War II internment era. And beginning in 1999, state laws in Montana, Oregon, and elsewhere outlawed squaw from place names. It reveals decades of bipartisan work to remove names that alienate subsets of Americans from their public lands. That long view would have been handy on our Facebook page, where many disparaged Dave’s comment as politically correct faddishness. Ultimately, a name change won’t solve bigger issues. But at over 600 sites, it will stop a slur and prompt a dialog that’s overdue. That’s true for my local bay too. But even with a new name, it will still be a serene place surrounded by forest and snow-clad mountains, where in late fall you can stand around all day and never see a deer. Letters to the Editor Incendiary nonsense On May 6, a person named Kellie Evans used the Pilot to accuse the Chetco Community Public Library of "grooming" children through porn. I'm not certain which is more concerning: the ridiculous and completely insane and unfounded notion that a local library was peddling pornography to "groom children," or that the Curry Pilot would publish the insane letter considering the fact that the writer fails to even mention the name of the book(s) in question that this person thinks is pornography. They could have been talking about any book. This per-

son's clearly inflammatory take was taken at face value without any due consideration for fact checking or followup as far as the readership is concerned. Kellie Evans is unequivocally incorrect in their paranoia, but the Pilot should have trod far more carefully before publishing such incendiary nonsense. Please take care to read everything with a critical eye. Please take care to recognize misinformation. This world in this time is so fragile, and there are people willing to shatter it. He has spent his life protecting his community by serving that same community. It is time this strong leader is allowed the opportunity of protecting Curry County against these challenges by serving Curry County. Three candidates, not two After reading the April 29 edition of the Pilot, it seems that there are only two candidates running for county commissioner. One third of the front page and four of the five editorials are equal coverage of the two candidates and the only mention of the third candidate is by Mr. Alcorn. Who is the third candidate you ask? It is Beth Hidalgo, a woman, who has been minimized to a moderator. Dream On Rhodes I chuckle to read that we the citizens of Curry County once again have the opportunity to elect George Rhodes a grandiose thinking former commissioner (2012-2015). Commissioner Rhodes during that term came up with plans for the State of Oregon to transfer ownership of the state airport at Cape Blanco to Curry County. Although, quite secretive, the plan was to develop the existing airport area into an industrial-commercial center complete with the airport. The county’s own consultants feasibility study had shown this type development this to be a pipe-dream. Another of Commissioner Rhodes pipe dreams was the

acquisition of the Floras Lake State Natural Area (FLNA) by Curry County. Both a destination resort and world class golf course would be developed and constructed. Planning included mysterious midnight soil testing. In the dark of the night and with a backhoe, six soil pits were dug along the trail between the Cape Blanco Airport and Blacklock Point. To this date, the soil test data and the subsequent state police report on this incident have not been made public. Wisely, the Oregon State Parks Commission nixed Commissioner Rhodes planned acquisition of FLNA. In retrospect one should ask why would a fiscally strapped county even think about taking on great debt? But that’s a question for George Rhodes to explain. Is this someone you want as a commissioner? I hope I’m not the only one who recalls Commissioner Rhodes hot-air planning. Perhaps if elected again he would come up with some new audacious folly to spend invisible Curry County funds. Ed Gross Brookings

Entry day is Monday, 25 July, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Docia Sweet Hall, The Event Center in Gold Beach. So, start reviewing your projects, check those yarn/fabric stashes, dust off your favorite patterns, and get started on selecting your best to enter in the Fair. Let’s show Curry County how we spent the pandemic. By that I mean knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, quilting, sewing, embroidering, needlepointing, and macraméing. Remember, you can enter a Christmas present and be able to give something not only handmade, but perhaps prize winning as well. There’s a larger reason to enter your works in the Fair. By displaying your creations in the Fair, you encourage and promote these arts. Your work may spark

others’ imaginations or inspire them to do something similar. Whether you win a prize or not, you’ll be part of preserving handmade products and connecting past generations with future ones in a meaningful way. So please consider sharing your chosen fiber art with others at the Fair…and keep alive the chain that’s been going for hundreds of years. And by the way, Volunteers (like me) to help set up and staff the Fiber Arts Department are welcome. Fiber Arts contacts are listed in the handbook. A woman's right Back in the mid 1970s, I escorted a lady friend to a clinic for an abortion. She had just found out she was pregnant even after taking precautions and was unprepared to birth and raise a child. Apparently to the pro forced birth crowd, that isn't a good enough reason and situations like hers now, should be a full term pregnancy no matter the situation. Some religious zealots even go so far as forcing a woman to give birth even if rape or incest is the cause. Invoking their God to validate their cruelty. The day I escorted my friend, we were verbally accosted by some vile and hateful people. Ignoring a young lady dealing with a painful decision and adding to her pain by screaming at us that we were murderers. Conversely, once we entered the clinic the staff treated both her and I with care and compassion. Yes, a life was taken that day, but a life still in the early development. Abortion is not strictly a black and white issue. There are many nuances surrounding a woman becoming pregnant, and she alone should have the right to decide. The religious zealots have a reason to celebrate for now. Hopefully however, this Taliban like attack on women's health will rally the majority in our country to bring back some sanity and not treat women like second class citizens. $40 million made available for farmers and ranchers in state STAFF REPORT Oregon farmers and ranchers who have experienced financial losses due to various natural disasters in 2021 can apply for the Oregon Disaster Assistance Program's (ODAP) assistance. According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) the applications will be available starting Monday, May 9. Local banks and credit unions familiar with agriculture will administer ODAP throughout the state. For a list of partners and a sample application, visit the ODAP web page. Applications will be available until June 3, 2022. “Oregon’s farmers and ranchers are used to dealing with issues beyond their control,” ODA Director Alexis Taylor said. “But the series of natural disasters, where historic drought conditions were compounded by record-breaking heat, wildfire smoke, early winter storm damage, and pest infestation in 2021, was hard for any producer to absorb" In December 2021, the Oregon Legislature granted ODA the legal authority and $40 million to establish a disaster assistance program. ODA designed ODAP as a forgivable loan with stakeholders and industry partners. The program calculates assistance for eligible farmers and ranchers in Oregon on the loss of Gross

Art Walk returns to three hours, expands to seven venues Beginning with the May 14 Second Saturday Art Walk, the monthly event will return to being scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. with more scheduled events being planned and venues returning. This month there are three special events scheduled — a short story reading and two artist interviews — along with a grand opening and a show of children’s art. Forecastle Books is returning to the Art Walk after an absence of more than a year. The store will be celebrating its grand opening at its new location at 553 Chetco Ave, two buildings north of its previous location. The featured artist is Matte Hanna, a landscape photographer and filmmaker living on the Oregon Coast. His show titled “Into the Mystic” is inspired by nature, natural beauty, mood, music, writing, daydreaming, color and composition. He will be present to discuss his work and answer questions. Hanna studied fine art at State University New York, New Paltz before transferring to University of Oregon earning a degree in film and animation.
