Azalea Festival on tap in Brookings By DAVID RUPKALVIS The Pilot
One of Brookings biggest festivals is set to return next month with three days of fun and activities. The Azalea Festival, which has been a great way to kick off the summer in Brookings for many years, is slated to be held May 27-30, with most of the festivities at Azalea Park. The festival has long been a must visit for local residents and was awarded the Oregon Heritage Tradition Award. Among the many events planned are Azalea Festival Parade, City Center Street Fair, Chamber Shrimp Feed, Curry County Cruisers Car Show, Azalea Park Concerts, Saturday Night Dance Party, Elks Deep Pit BBQ, Sunday morning Community Church Service and much more. Klaus Gielisch was recently named the grand marshal for the festival. Gielisch is known as the man behind the Nature's Coastal Holiday event that lights up Brookings during the Christmas season every year. With more than 20 people running for the open governor’s seat, Court Boice may stand alone in that he really isn’t planning to win. But Boice is taking his run for governor very seriously. A current county commission in Curry County, Boice
said his goal in joining the campaign is to use the larger pulpit of a statewide race to make sure important issues facing Curry County and other smaller counties are heard. And it’s not the first time Boice has used the tactic. After the catastrophic Chetco Bar and Klondike wildfires, Boice ran for the District 4 seat in Congress in

Six years after he won the Republican primary and lost a close race to Gov. Kate Brown, Dr. Bud Pierce feels like the timing is right to take the next big step. During a campaign stop in Coos Bay last week, Pierce said despite the crowded field in the Republican primary he is
confident heading into the final weeks of campaigning. “It comes down to continuing to work the process,” he said. “We have pretty darn good support in the medical community. It really comes down to telling people who you are, what you stand for and what you believe, and leave it to them. I want people to know the authentic Bud.”

Gielisch also finds time to volunteer to deliver for Meals on Wheels and hold a seat on Curry County ' s Tourism and Promotions Committee. The Azalea Festival will kick off Friday, May 27, with a book sale at the Chetco Community Library at 10 a.m. At 6 p.m. that night, the VA will host a reading of names of veterans who have died at the flagpole at city hall. Things really get rolling Saturday morning with kids fishing ponds at Grocery Outlet starting at 8 a.m. The vendor fair on Frontage Road will open at 9 a.m. and the annual Azalea Festival Parade will kick off at 10 a.m. on Highway 101. Throughout the day, there will be things like a quilt show, book sale, barbecue, art sale and a pizza party hosted by the Rotary Club. On Sunday, May 29, the Curry County Cruisers Car Show will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Lodge beginning at 8. A community church service will be held at Azalea Park and the vendor fair, book fair, music, food and even airport day will be held. The Azalea Festival will conclude Monday, May, 30, with a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Lodge and a jet flyover at 8:20 a.m.
Brookings kicks off yard Deadline to register to of the month program vote approaching
Spring is here and the city of Brookings is accepting nominations from the public for its 20th annual Yard of the Month awards program. This program is a great way to recognize city of Brookings business and property owner’s who go to great lengths to make their property look attractive, and by so doing,
make the city as a whole look better. The Yard of the Month program, begun in 2002, recognizes the most attractive residential and commercial properties inside the city limits from May through September. Monthly award recipients receive a $50 credit on their water bill, a commemorative certificate
and a sign posted at their property declaring their award-winning status. Nominations may be made by email or phone to Natasha Tippetts at ntippetts@brookings.or.us ; 541-469-1102 or Lauri Ziemer, lziemer@brookings.or.us; 541-469-1103. Eligible properties must be located within the city limits.
Curry County Clerk Reneé Kolen informs voters that the May 17 primary election processes have been underway for weeks now. Ballots for military and overseas voters have already been mailed. The state voters’ pamphlet containing voting information and candidate statements should arrive at every residential address in Oregon from April 20-22. It also contains a voter registration form inside for anyone who is not yet registered. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, you can go online to www.oregonvotes.gov\myvote to register to vote. “Residents new to the State of Oregon who are not currently registered or registered voters who wish to change their
party affiliation need to register by April 26. Voters already registered who have moved or changed their mailing address have until May 17, Election Day, to update their address. Oregon Law does not allow the post office to forward ballots.” Kolen said. Ballot packets will be mailed between April 27 and May 3. If you have not received your ballot packet by Friday, May 6, or need help in registering, call the clerk's office at (541) 247-3297. An elector may verify that their ballot has been received by the Election Office through the Oregon Secretary of State’s website at www.oregonvotes.gov\myvote.

I have just read the Pilot advertisement/op ed about a broadband service being promoted by our electric coop. And although broadband has appeared on the cover of our Rural Co-ops Magazine, I never understood why our co-op promoted it. Now I see in the old Pilot that a board member of both companies, Georgia Cockerham, is urging us to be informed that our financial obligation is growing exponentially. As members of CCEC, we are financially responsible. As shareholders in CCEC, each of us with electric service will owe whatever loans and expenses our co-op defaults on.
The CCEC board did not inform us of this obligation. We must become informed and demand accountability before we incur more debt, through this membership in the co-op. Kathryn Justman Brookings Ziply promises not kept I switched to Ziply DSL service from satellite two years ago because I was told by a Ziply rep that I could get 25 Mb compared to the 5 Mb I was currently receiving. When my install ticket was entered, the service rep said I would only receive 10 Mb. I said OK. The technician doing the install said his test showed I would get 5 Mb, but that Ziply was going to put in a new switch that would improve my service significantly in about six months. I said OK. When the install was made, I checked my speed and I received 1.3 Mb download and .38 up. I called six months later and was told there is no order for a new switch. A year later there is still no switch ordered. Now two years later, still no upgrade. Recently there was a notice that all Ziply customers on DSL will have fiber available soon. I logged onto their site, filled in my address and the response was “we cannot find your address,” so I called today and was told, “I am sorry but we do not know when service will be available.” Their technicians and representatives were nice, but their words stink. A Word, Please: Indefinite articles By JUNE CASAGRANDE A while back, when office work was still a thing and I was surrounded by people called “colleagues,” I wrote a sentence on a piece of paper then walked to several co-workers’ desks. “Would you read this aloud?” I asked, then I held up the paper marked with the words “the 1,100-square-foot property is for sale.” They looked at me like I had a hidden agenda, which I did. But they indulged me anyway. “The one thousand, one hundred square foot property,” some said. “The eleven hundred square foot property,” others said. I had asked because I was editing an article with a similar, though not identical sentence. Instead of the definite article “the” in front of the number, the piece I was editing had an indefinite article, and I wanted to know whether it should be “a” or “an.” English has just two indefinite articles and the choice between them is usually easy. “A” precedes a consonant sound: a cat, a truck, a man. “An” precedes a vowel sound: an idea, an octopus, an intelligent octopus. Usually, a word starts with a vowel sound because it starts with a vowel — an umpire —or it starts with a consonant sound because it starts with a consonant — a referee. But not always. The word “university,” for example, starts with a consonant sound: Y. That’s why you say “a university” and not “an university.” Even in these cases, “a” and “an” are easy for native English speakers. Sometimes an indefinite article that comes naturally when you’re speaking can make you second-guess yourself when you’re writing. For example, some struggle with the question of which article to use before an abbreviation like “FBI.” F is a consonant and it stands for a word that begins with a consonant sound, “federal.” But when you say the letter F, you start with a vowel sound: “eff.” That’s why when you’re speaking, you say “an FBI
agent” and not “a FBI agent.” Whether speaking or writing, the rule is based on pronunciation. So you’d write “an FBI agent.” People disagree on how to handle “historic.” But there’s no wrong answer. If you treat the H as silent or nearly silent, you can use “an historic.” People who prefer this method point out that, because “historic” puts the stress on its second syllable, “stor,” the first syllable is all but lost without “an” in front of it. People who pronounce the H use “a historic.” The Associated Press Stylebook, which I follow in my editing work, says it’s “a historic.” So that’s how I do it. The guide for book and magazine publishers, the Chicago Manual of Style, is less rigid: “The word ‘historical’ and its variations cause missteps, but if the H in these words is pronounced, it takes an A (an hour-long walk at a historical society).” Not interested in what the style guides say? You can take your cue from a dictionary. Merriam-Webster says “historic” is pronounced with an audible H. You can hear it spoken aloud by pressing the little speaker button next to the word in its online dictionary entry. My favorite a/an conundrum has also made the rounds to co-workers’ desks on a piece of paper. I asked colleagues to read the sentence “Look for a hotel with a high rating from AAA.” Most didn’t say “a, a, a.” They said “triple a.” And because the rule about indefinite articles is based on pronunciation, not spelling, you’d write “a AAA-rated hotel” and not “an AAA-rated hotel.” I was curious how the automobile club did it, so I checked the California AAA website. I’m disgusted with American journalism. It’s boring. I blame editors for assigning uninteresting stories, and people interviewed for being evasive. So, for a modest fee, I provide journalists with stories that could have happened and quotes that should have been uttered. Contact me at CustomFacts.org. None of the above is true. But if it got your attention, recall that in most forms of journalism, lies are frowned upon. Not so with wildlife photojournalism. Liars dominate. This galls me because I work with so many honest wildlife photographers who spend months getting shots the liars get in an hour. Consider the story from Finland, viral in the U.S. and Europe with 759,000 page views, of a wild wolf and brown bear that constantly nuzzle each other. “Unusual Friendship,” understates one title. “No one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends,” the photographer told the Daily Mail. One person knows. That would be Melissa Groo, a soaring star in honest wildlife
photojournalism, who co-chairs the International League of Conservation Photographers’ Ethics Committee. “There’s a huge business now in northern Europe baiting these animals (often with dog food) for photographers,” she says. “I can’t even look at photos of these animals from Finland anymore.” Then there’s the epic “wolf-grizzly brawl” over blood-stained snow in Montana documented by a “nature photographer.” The story was first reported by the Sun and Daily Mail, then recycled 11,000 times on both sides of the Atlantic. The photos are stunning. The blood issued from a planted deer carcass. The grizzly and wolves were tame actors, incarcerated by Animals of Montana, an “animal training service” known for animal abuse, including illegal wildlife trafficking and Endangered Species Act violations. Before 2021, when the state shut down Animals of Montana, it was patronized by some of the world’s most acclaimed “wildlife photographers.” Its website still exists. Photo-game-farm animals “spend much of their lives in small cages with concrete floors
and only enough space to turn around,” writes Groo in National Wildlife magazine. Some of these game farms, she learned from Freedom of Information requests, are analogs of “domestic puppy mills, breeding and selling wild animals such as wolves, foxes, and lynxes.” Babies are taken from their mothers at early ages and sold to roadside zoos and exotic-pet dealers. Twelve years ago, I considered an undercover visit to Animals of Montana. “Our grizzlies,” proclaimed its website, “will amaze you by running towards the camera, standing on command, snarling viciously, or posing cutely.” But the violations already on its record spooked me. If I had exposed this outfit, the game-farm industry would accuse me of cherry-picking. So I tried Wild Eyes Photo Adventures in Columbia Falls, Montana. But it had been busted for violating the Animal Welfare Act. Minnesota Wildlife Connection sounded interesting. But it had sold its tame black bear Cubby for $4,650 to country music star Troy Gentry, who then illegally “hunted” and killed
Cubby inside his pen. Finally, I settled on Triple D Wildlife in Kalispell, Montana. (This was before the USDA cited it for sundry abuses including “dead flies and floating debris” in water bowls, “excessive accumulation of excreta and animal food waste in the animal enclosures,” and “excessive accumulation and buildup of dirt, grime, fur, and urine,” along with declawing a tiger cub.) I “rented” a tiny Triple D cougar named Jewel. By the time the trainer had driven us to a scenic set, the day had warmed to minus 16 Fahrenheit. Jewel, unaccustomed to the wild, raised and shook each paw the way my cat Moop did the time she stepped in turpentine. Jewel swatted photogenically at the deer-hair toy dangled in front of her by the trainer. He had to carry her back to the truck. Still, this had probably been the high point in Jewel’s dreary day. I felt bad for the wolves who spent most of their lives in a dark, dank enclosure. When I sprang Big John and Lakota from Triple D for a “photoshoot,” the other 15 wolves cried. Big John and Lakota reveled in their brief freedom, fielding beef treats

thrown by the trainer whenever they leaped over logs or pretended to snarl viciously. After his romp, Big John rolled on his back for a belly rub. “You couldn’t have gotten those shots in the wild,” Triple D co-owner Jay Deist declared angrily after I’d asked questions not to his liking. But it can be fixed. “It’s going to take effective policing, and it’s going to take people who break the law being arrested and being punished in a real way,” Pierce said. With so much riding on the election, Pierce said he stands out because he is not interested in accolades or attention.

Perhaps the biggest issue facing rural Oregon is a lack of housing, and Boice said he will make the issue front and center any time he gets to speak.
“The biggest issue I have right now, housing is about to outpace fire danger as the biggest issue,” Boice said. “I’m just rattling their cage a little bit. No other state has such restrictive land use laws. I think I can make a difference there. It’s just going to take some time.” While Boice said his top issues remain helping Curry County, he believes having a rural commissioner running can help all the small, rural counties in the state. “That’s been a very motivating part of being here full time,” said of his position in Curry County. “You see other commissioners struggling, you see our board struggling. So you team up. It’s just part of working together and teaming up, and really have a big voice when it comes to Salem.” Boice said even if he never is governor, rural officials can play a big role in how Oregon moves forward. “The division between the rural and the urban is growing and that’s unfor-
tunate,” he said. “In time, someone’s going to come in and bring everyone together. But that’s an education thing. I think the time is getting closer. Even the moderates, even the leaning left, they see Oregon’s in a lot of trouble.” Boice said he can make a difference through his public service. “If you love people and you’re persistent and you have logic and common sense and statesmanship, people notice,” Boice said. “I have great reputation around the state. I’ve worked very hard for that. I feel very fortunate and very blessed to have those relationships. I don’t want to waste that. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boater safety course After two years, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is returning to in person boater safety courses. The one-day class is offered twice: Saturday, April 23, or Saturday, May 14, from 9am - 4pm. Students who successfully complete the one-day course will receive a certificate of completion, to apply for their Oregon State Marine Board Boater Safety card.
The one day course, taught by certified Coast Guard auxiliarists, will be held at the Masonic Lodge, 416 Azalea Park Road, Brookings, Oregon. The course fee is $30 and includes the book Boat Oregon. All boaters who operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower (hp) and youths 12-15 years old operating a motorboat of any size
are required to take an approved boating safety course and apply/carry a boater education card. Clyde was hit by a car and put into a high kill shelter, though X-rays showed no broken bones! He is a special needs boy that is regaining his strength. He may have some neurological issues for the rest of his life, but he plays fine with the other dogs. He is in no pain and will have a good quality of life in the right home!
