Chetco Girls bring home title, Arends named MVP

FOR THE PILOT The Chetco Basketball Club (CBC) 7th-8th Grade Girls traveled to Santa Rosa, California where they competed in the 2026 Kings of Sonoma Basketball tournament. The girls started the tournament on Saturday, March 21 with wins over California Storm 14U of Santa Rosa, Ca

(21-14) and Perpetual Motion Academy of Solano County, Ca (30-17). Saturday’s momentum carried into Sunday where the Girls knocked off California Storm’s 13U team (35-19). The CBC girls secured the tournament Championship with a 52-11 victory in a matchup with the Lady Saints 14U of Kelseyville, Ca. The CBC finished the tournament with a point differential of plus-76 and did not

allow an opposing team to score 20 points in any of the four matchups. As if the team success wasn’t enough, three CBC athletes received individual accolades at the conclusion of the tournament. Lillian Arends was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while Aria Cardenas and Aaliyah Ybarra were both selected to the All-Tournament team. The championship marks the 7-8 team’s

second consecutive tournament title. Three CBC teams (3-5 Girls, 6-7 Girls & 7-8 Girls) will be competing in the Rogue X Slam tournament in Medford, Or on April 11-12, 2026. Free job support available to Oregonians meeting SNAP work requirements President Donald Trump in July 2025 signed a law requiring that adults aged 18 to 64 prove they are working or volunteering 80 hours a month to qualify for food assistance. People who don’t meet the work requirements may lose SNAP benefits after three months, and they won’t have the chance to qualify again until a new three-year period begins. The current three-year period ends in December 2027. Oregon began rolling out the new federal rules in six counties last fall, and it has since expanded to the rest of the state. Exemptions apply to some Native American individuals, pregnant women, people who can’t work because of a physical or mental condition and individuals living with children younger than 14. People living in Crook, Gilliam, Jefferson, Lake, Morrow, Sherman and Wheeler counties are also exempt because their county doesn’t have a

Free employment and training services are available to Oregonians receiving food assistance and needing to meet new work requirements imposed by the Trump administration. The Oregon Department of Human Services and the Oregon Employment Department, both WorkSource Oregon partners, are encouraging Oregonians receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to seek free help at 37 Worksource Oregon centers across the state. “Through case management and employment and training services, we work with each person to create a plan based on their interests, strengths and abilities,” said Jessica Amaya Hoffman, SNAP director at the Oregon Department of Human Services. “This helps them meet requirements while moving toward a career path that fits their goals.”
