An upcoming wilderness documentary film screening follows a group of young Americans who find themselves in the middle of nowhere with no phones, no technology, and up against the greatest challenge of their lives. The new 28-minute documentary, “A Long Way to

restoring trails that were fading from the region’s public lands. “It evolved into this saga,” said Gabe Howe, executive director of the Siskiyou Mountain Club. “It’s almost like an odyssey type of experience, where they go in, and when they come out they have really changed,” he said. The footage also captures rarely-seen landscapes of the Chetco River Canyon and

wildlands of the Kalmiopsis area. “There’s not too many people who have been in that area with film equipment,” Howe said. The Siskiyou Mountain Club is a nonprofit based in Ashland that was formed to restore, maintain, and promote primitive trails in the Siskiyou backcountry and beyond. They coordinate, and have now documented, the hard work it takes to keep trails from

disappearing from the remote corners of Southwest Oregon and Northwest California. “The challenge for us is bringing people into our mission because geographically our mission is so far away from most people,” Howe explained. “So what we really tried to do here is give a broader audience a window into our mission, and Please see FILM, Page 3

Azalea Festival Grand Marshals announced Brookings is hosting the 85th edition of their annual Azalea Festival on Memorial Day weekend, starting May 24, 2024. The City’s biggest warmweather celebration will see the downtown Street Market fully booked, with 80 new and returning vendors bringing food, fun, and shopping to the streets. Friday will kick off with an evening dance party, while Saturday and Sunday are booked with three concerts apiece in Azalea Park. The festival will continue to have its traditional events, while providing tourists and Brookings residents the opportunity to come together and celebrate our community. To that end, the City of Brookings announced the Grand Marshals for this year’s festival. As is tradition, the marshals are active, long-time members of the community, who’s contributions deserve the bestowment of the festive honor: Dan and Barbara Palicki. The Palicki’s moved to Brookings in 1994, looking to retire after a combined 52 years of police and public service in Toledo, OH. They soon found retirement wasn’t quite as close

as they’d thought. Barbara quickly joined the Brookings Police Department and served from ’94 to ’07, initially as a Community Policing officer and eventually as the first female detective in Brookings’ history. She established the Volunteers in Police Service program and acted as head of the Child Advocacy Center in Gold Beach. Barbara’s public service has continued, as today she holds seats on the Board of Directors for Curry Public Transit Inc., as well as the Oregon Attorney General’s Crime Victims Advisory Board. Dan’s resume of community service is just as robust. Dan drove for Dial-a-Ride for nearly 20 years, providing transportation to members of the Senior Center, and used that experience when he also joined the Curry Public Transit Inc.’s board of directors. Dan spent 25 years starting and developing a popular Brookings summer program, ‘Safety City’, which helps to educate kindergarten aged kids in a variety of safety measures. From fire safety, to

stranger-danger, to making 911 calls, the kids develop a full remit of safety skills. Dan also volunteered as McGruff the Crime Dog for BPD for over a decade. We would like to join The City of

Brookings in congratulating Dan and Barbara Palicki’s accomplishments in community service and look forward to the big celebration this Memorial Day weekend!
