The Curry County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to give no county funding for homeless housing, whether it's from American Res-
cue Plan funding or from other county funds. The vote came at the beginning of the board's meeting last week as dozens of people waited to give public comment on the issue. Before listening to the public,
the three commissioners shared their thoughts on the proposal to fund homeless housing at the Ophir School as requested by the Curry County Homeless Coalition. "Boy, am I grateful for the amount of correspondence we've
had with citizens," Commissioner Court Boice said. "In the last five business days, we've receive over 200 emails or calls. The overwhelming response was a resounding no to the homeless project. We all have a right and a responsibility to protect our way

Patrick Starnes knows he’s not the biggest name in the Democrat primary for Oregon governor, but he thinks that puts him in the perfect position to pull off a major upset. Starnes, who ran for governor in 2018 as an independent, brought his campaign for governor to the South Coast this week, stopping in Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and Coos Bay. Christine Drazan has risen to the top of the Republican party in Oregon through her work in the Legislature. She is now hoping that experience gives her a chance to represent the party in the race for governor. This week, she brought her campaign to the South Coast, reaching out to voters who will pick the Republican candidate
for governor. Drazan announced recently she is stepping down as the House Republican leader to focus on her campaign. She said after decades of one-party rule, it is time for a new voice and a new vision in the governor’s mansion. “Sometimes people who are elected don’t always listen, they don’t always represent us,” Drazan said. “Sometimes they make problems. The real problem is leadership. That’s what’s missing
right now.” Dragon made a name for herself in state politics when she led a walkout from the Legislature to stop a cap-and-trade bill being pushed by the Democrats. “We didn’t have a choice,” Drazan said. “We had to walk out.” She said if elected, her first actions would be to end some of the moves made by current Gov. During a passionate electronic address to the Oregon Legislature, Gov. Kate Brown said her legislative priorities for the short February session include helping working families by expanding workforce opportunities, affordable housing and child care. Brown will leave office at the end of the year due to the state's term limits. She has served as governor since February 2015. "I stand here today at a pivotal moment for Oregon,” Brown said. “Since I took office seven years ago, the world has fundamentally changed. Oregon has undoubtedly faced some of the most challenging times in our state’s history. However, even with all we’ve lost, we can see a path forward.” During her final State of the State address Feb. 3, Brown said the COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating, but Oregon’s economy is strong. “In my last year as governor, I view every day, every moment, as one more opportunity to focus on the big and bold work we still have to do for Oregon’s working families,” she said. Brown outlined her $200 million Future Ready Oregon platform as a three-part effort dedicated to building a strong Oregon workforce by providing access to child care, “so that parents that work can go to work knowing that their kids are cared for,” she said. Brown said her plan will surge an immediate $92 million to programs currently working, such as Constructing Hope, which helps Oregonians get back on their feet with no-cost construction training and career advancement. Innovation will be boosted through flexible grants to community-based organizations and industries supporting technical and health care training, she said. Brown’s plan includes $100 million to expand child care access and an additional $400 million investment in affordable housing. Senior, disabled tax deferral program offered Curry County Assessor Jim Kolen reports the state of Oregon has a property tax deferral program which may provide assistance to some senior and/or disabled citizens with their property taxes. In this program, the state of Oregon pays the property taxes for qualified applicants. Taxes must be paid back to the state when the property changes ownership or the owner moves. Property owners must meet the following requirements to qualify for the property tax deferral: Senior citizens - Must be 62 years old by April 15. Disabled citizens - At least one joint property owner needs
to qualify as an individual with disabilities and must be determined eligible to receive or be receiving federal Social Security disability benefits due to disability or blindness. The Oregon Legislature has recently made significant changes to the eligibility for the Senior and Disabled Citizen Property Tax Deferral programs. Requirements for both programs now include: Applicantís net worth must be below $500,000. Applicantís real market value of their property must be less than the RMV limitation as determined by the assessorís office. The limitation is based

She traveled to her newborn grandchildren to welcome them with hugs and kisses, brightened holidays with her presents and presence, and made sure cards arrived for special days. She spent countless hours being a listening ear for those dear to her. She also helped vulnerable children in her work. Pauli loved music and blessed many people with her musical talents of singing and piano playing. One of her favorite events was to have a group of people singing around the piano! Her playing inspired the robust singing of show tunes, Christmas carols and sacred hymns across generations. It was always fun to be with her, receive her full embrace, see her big smile and hear her joyous laughter. She loved deeply and brought such joy to our lives. Preceding her in death were her parents, sister

John Richard O'Hagan

John Richard O’Hagan, 101, an Ocosta native, Grayland cranberry farmer and Markham resident, died Saturday, January 22, 2022 in Brookings, Oregon. John was born on June 19, 1920 in Cosmopolis, WA to John Richard and Lucy Pauline (Yock) O’Hagan. He grew up in Ocosta and graduated from Ocosta High School in 1938. He joined the US Navy Reserves on January 2,1939 serving on the USS Grant (AP-29). He was called to active service on May 20,1941. He served as Quartermaster 1st Class on the USS Wadsworth (DD-516) in the Pacific Theater, where he was the Helmsman and became known as “Irish” and later “Zig Zag O’Hagan”. He served in 11 major engagements and earned numerous commendations and medals, including the Presidential Unit Citation. Following Japan’s surrender, the USS Wadsworth was ordered to Tokyo to help liberate POW’s held in concentration camps. The poor and degraded condition of the liberated POW’s was forever etched on John’s memory. John was honorably discharged on 5th November 1945 and returned to Ocosta. In 1946, John bought his first cranberry bog and later joined the Ocean Spray Co-op. In 1951, he married Beulah M. Louthan in Aberdeen. They bought the home place in Grayland where they raised their family. In 1984 He formed Swampapple Enterprises Inc. with three of his sons. Following Beulah’s
passing on April 8th 1988, he sold the farm to his son and did some traveling and through his sister met up with his old high school sweetheart in Anacortes, WA, Patricia (Blair) Lund. They were married in 1989 in Mt. Vernon, WA and settled in LA Conner, WA until her passing on March 27, 2001. He returned to Grays Harbor and built his current home in Markham. Besides working the farm, John owned Western Grower’s Supply Co. in the mid 50’s to the Mid 60’s building the Western Picker for the cranberry industry. Before the War he worked at Boeing while attending the University of Washington. And when he was a teenager, he went out to the logging camps selling eggs and chopping wood for the steam donkeys. John was a lifetime member of the Aberdeen Elks and was awarded the Longest Living Elk Award in 2017 and also the 75-year membership pin (which had to be designed). He was a Past Director of the Ocosta School Board, Past Director of the Grayland Drainage District, Past Director of the Grayland Water District, Member of the Grayland Cranberry Growers Association and former member of the Advisory Committee for Ocean Spray. He loved to hunt, fish and travel. When he lived in LaConner, he had one of the most pristine gardens in the area. The thing he hated the most in retirement was “weeds”. He visited Ireland and Scotland and many parts of this country for Wadsworth reunions or Ocean Spray annual meetings. He was on an outing to visit family in Brookings OR when he past away. John is survived by four sons: Patrick (Nyla) O’Hagan of Grayland, WA; Daniel (Jeanette) O’Hagan of Aberdeen, Michael O’Hagan of Aberdeen and James O’Hagan of Grayland; a daughter, Mitzie (George) Frick of Roch-

A celebration of life was held at the Aberdeen Elks, Aberdeen, WA following the graveside service.

They soon began dating and they, married on November 29, 1958 in Gold Beach. They moved to Portland in 1964 and then settled in Beaverton in the early 1970's. Ron passed away suddenly on April 13, 2021. Dolores was a loving and devoted mother to her family. She had also worked as an Executive secretary for Nike a career that spanned over thirty years retiring in 2006. She was in the marching band in high school, Dolores was very social and

Letters to the Editor Not the county I love
More to the story
I attended the most recent Curry County BOC meeting. I was left with one impression. The Curry County I know and love was not present. Surely the most important duty of a county commissioner is to work towards the wellbeing and protection of all Curry County citizens. This was not evident in a packed chamber with no effort made to manage the crowd in an orderly and safe manner. The commissioners lauded those present for their commitment to active participation in county government, then proceeded to cut that participation short by moving to an early vote on the very issue driving that participation. The commissioners voted to deny using a portion of the American Rescue Funds towards a housing and resource center for those experiencing homelessness in our county. This decision was based on personal emotions and fear, rather than research and fact. There is a mountain of evidence, based on real life experience in communities across this land, that attests to the positive outcomes when supportive housing exists. Costs associated with health care, hospitalizations and law enforcement are reduced while partnerships with education services and community agencies are strengthened. The myth that homeless people come to a community because of these services has been thoroughly debunked. What about that duty to work towards the wellbeing and protection of all Curry County citizens? Perhaps it doesn’t apply if we are able to convince ourselves to dehumanize homeless people, to believe they possess no redeeming qualities. This belief was certainly on display last Wednesday. How else could we accept unthinkable living conditions for children and adults in our community? This could never exist if we saw homeless people for who they are - people. The Curry County I know and love was not present. It will show up on May 17.
Hot topics at the Board of Commissioners evoked two quotes from my memory: “I care about decency and humanity and “I care about decency and humanity and kindness. Kindness today is an act of rebellion.” — Pink “Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.” — Ruth Bader Ginsburg Other thoughts: Please do not demonize your neighbor for a difference of opinion. Model the founding fathers who built this democracy with the intent to insist that all people are created equal. Not all homeless people are drug addicted or alcohol dependent. Among homeless veterans, a large study provided the statistic that 93% of our homeless veterans report a history of head injuries. Albeit, that stat is homeless veterans, only, but there are implications that extend to homeless citizens. HB 1528 recognizes the need for support for head injured citizens including help navigating the system and life. In watching the Curry County Board of Commissioners workshop, I was amazed at the “spun” comments made by the Brookings Harbor Community Helpers Food Bank’s Executive Director. Ms. Winebarger suggested that the food bank doesn’t have a two-year timeframe to wait for a USDA grant, doesn’t tell the whole story. Backstory? The food bank has had close to six years to apply at any time for that same USDA grant. It was the stubborn refusal of the executive director to do so, ignoring the request of the board of directors and it looks like there was tossing out of significant work product on multiple grant applications nearing completion. Omicron surges!
NO! to homeless housing! NO! to indoor masks! NO! to planning for water security! As a child I often heard my mother say “better to be safe than sorry.” At the time, I was considering a mundane choice such as “should I wear my rubber boots in the rain?” Now we are faced with existential threats from disease, climate change and an economic system that favors the billionaires and what do we do? We are unable to accept immediate inconvenience to leave a better world for those we will leave behind. Look around at the housing situation. Are you happy that the value of your house is skyrocketing? Or do you realize that people are being priced out of their homes? We know that there is a labor shortage here. We realize that affordable housing is needed, but is there any progress on that? Have you considered that housing the homeless would enable many to turn their lives around and enter the local work force. You’d probably be surprised to hear that we do have local workers that are living out of their cars right now. Wouldn’t you feel good about yourself if you helped giving them a leg up? Where do I find encouragement in all this? In people like Father Bernie at St. Tim’s. He is struggling to continue with his gracious charity work at a time when we should be pitching in
to help. And where would Curry County be without St. Tim’s COVID testing and vaccine service? Service. Aiding our fellow humans. Service not only helps the needy, it replenishes one’s soul. Thank you to everyone in our community that is working for a better today and tomorrow. Remember- “better to be safe than sorry.” To The Pilot I'd like to suggest more balanced coverage. Please strive to interview people who hold differing opinions. Any visitor might look at that front page and think that we are an uncaring community. The noise makers may only appear to be in the majority.

It’s a top tourist attraction, even being listed on Trip Advisor as “A unique attraction that all cat lovers must see!” Hundreds of dumped and feral cats have been sheltered, fed and TNR meaning “Trapped-Neutered/Spayed-Returned” and gotten vaccinated and vet exams. Dumped domesticated cats are often re-homed, sometimes with the assistance of Wild Rivers Animal Rescue but they have no present or future-planned program for ferals. A group came together this past November to rebuild the houses and organize efforts to extend services including a barn cat type program to home ferals. We started by removing four rotting houses and new ones were built but not yet installed. New foster homes were established as well as extended vet relationships. Sadly, the property owner, after a letter of opposition from four homeowners across the road, has rescinded permission to move forward. They will be torn down at months end, and all feeding and trapping must halt. A new location is needed, would take little space, needs to be near town and have public access. Hospice House, Eugene, Or. Joan was born August 16, 1935, in Arkansas City, Kansas, the youngest child of “Harry” and “Beatrice” Brown. Joan graduated from Ark City High School in 1953. Two years later, on New Year’s Day in 1955, Joan married Dick Purdue in Arkansas City. While living in Kansas, two sons, Tim and Brady were born. In 1958, Dick and Joan moved with their boys to Brookings, Oregon. There-
after, four more children were born, Lyle, Lynn, Connie and Pat. Brookings became hometown for the Purdue clan. Joan enjoyed life in Brookings, although she despised the beach. She was a great mother and wife. She loved the Lord, and was always faithful to Him, which shaped the way she lived. After the kids left the nest, Joan worked a few years at the Harbor post office. After her husband Dick passed, Joan moved from

"I believe that initially our country started with a welfare system for women and their families because of loss of their husbands in war zones," Paasch said. "I'm sure other counties around would love to see us open a facility like this because they would load their buses and bring them on over. "It's personal to me. 33-yer-old son, meth addict, in prison right now," Paasch said. "I've tried. No amount of giving is going to change that. I've tried and tried and tried and this young man is 33 years old. He gets out of jail next month. He's going to change, he says. I feel bad for these folks. I've had them in my house. They need to make a choice and stop doing what they're doing. There's a way to do this. We're getting away from punishment and we're rewarding bad behavior, not that all these people need to be punished." Boice then made a motion to use no county funds for the Ophir School proposal or any other homeless housing project. Paasch seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. I need your help with the primary. We have an absolute opportunity to put a Republican in the governor’s seat.” She said those interested in change can help out by being active, locally and at the state level. “When people show up, it changes things,” she said. “It can and does make a difference. In this election cycle, it’s important we show up.”

With COVID being one of the key issues in the Republican primary, Drazan said she believes firmly in individual choice. “I am all about choice,” she said. “For me, I made the decision to get vaccinated. I’m around a million people. I made the decision myself. If someone else doesn’t, that is their choice.” With the primary race heating up, Drazan said her proven leadership should help her stand out in a crowded field. “All these problems we’re talking about are absolutely solvable with leadership,” she said. “Everything you can do, everything you are, this is the time.”
