Missing man found dead after days of searching The Pilot After four days of searching, search and rescue members of the Curry County Sheriff's Office located the body of a man reported missing December 30. Sheriff John Ward reported around 1:45 p.m., January 2, the body of Jeffrey Scherbarth was located in heavy brush and timber off 220 Road about 20 miles
east of Gold Beach. It appeared he had died several days earlier. Ward reported the sheriff's office was notified December 30 that Scherbarth was missing after his dog was located on Agness Road near Nail Keg Creek. The last time anyone has seen Scherbarth was November 23. That night, search and rescue members responded and checked
over the banks of Agness Road near where the dog had been found. On New Year's Eve, search and rescue members returned to the area and walked from Lobster Creek to Agness, covering about 20 miles while searching for Scherbarth. Late that night, his vehicle was found on 220 Road. Scherbarth was not in the vehicle, but
an older dog was located and rescued. On New Year's Day, the search continued with members of Agness Fire and Rescue and Gold Beach Fire and Rescue joining in the search. Finally, on January 2, search and rescue members found Scherbarth's body. SAR members had to use chain saws to cut a path in the brush so his body

could be carried out. The body was released to Redwood Memorial out of Brookings. "I couldn’t be prouder than I am with my SAR team, and the SAR coordinators," Ward said. "They gave up their New Years celebrations and spent the time away from their own family to bring closure to Scherbarth’s family. Our condolences to the family and friends."

Bruce Jarvis recently accepted a calling to serve as pastor at Brookings Presbyterian Church. Jarvis, who along with his wife of 37-years, Leah, moved to Brookings a little over a year ago. “When we first came to this church, it felt like the first day as if we were family,” said Jarvis. Jarvis has served in other ministries, including in Pennsylvania and Southern California, and obtained a master of divinity degree at Westminster Seminary California, located in Escondido. According to Jarvis, there are about 90 official and unofficial “friends” who attend services at Brookings Presbyterian. “This year I’m looking forward to reinstituting social and fellowship programs,” Jarvis said. “Fellowship is very important. It’s in our DNA.”

Gold Beach’s drinking water received an outstanding performance rating from the Oregon Health Authority, and was the only water system in Curry County to receive a perfect score. “The ‘Outstanding Performer’ designation that OHA awards to qualifying water systems is an honor to receive,” said Public Works Superintendent Will Newdall. This is Gold Beach’s second time to achieve the outstanding drinking water designation. The first time occurred in 2015. Most cities' water systems are reviewed by the OHA every three years, but Gold Beach's next review won’t occur until 2026 due to its high performance. According to Newdall, to qualify for this particular rating, a water system undergoes a comprehensive inspection by OHA Drinking Water Section staff encompassing all facets of water treatment, delivery, storage, security, testing and operation within the scope of the organization being reviewed. “Diligent efforts by the city of Gold Beach public works staff, city administration, city council and the budget committee have all contributed toward receiving this honor,” said Newdall.

Out-of-state recreational vehicle users will pay more to use Oregon state parks this year. On January 1, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department began charging out-of-state residents 25% more at state-run RV sites. The increase applies to all sites that offer RV hookups. Including lodging tax, a typical RV site with sewer and electrical hookups will cost $30$50 per night for non-residents, compared to $24-$40 for Oregon residents. When her children were in high school/college, she went back to work as the onsite nurse at Brookline Retirement Home in State College, PA. Genny and Floyd moved back to the West in 1991 (Medford, OR then later, Smith River, CA). Genny was active in the community of Brookings (Southern Oregon), enjoyed lunches and gatherings with friends and family, and loved watching the views of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. She was one of the original founders of the Brookings Red Hat Society in December 2003; was an active member of the Brookings Presbyterian Church; and was also an active supporter and contributor to the Brookings Soroptimist International organization. She enjoyed her weekly Bible studies, and making greeting cards from nature photos which she regularly gave to friends and family. Genny is survived by her husband, Dr. Floyd P. Naugle, her son, Robert Naugle (Smith River, CA), her two daughters,

Adapt to serve as mental health program provider for Curry County Adapt Integrated Health Care—provider of primary care, mental health care and substance use treatment in southern Oregon— announced that the organization now serves as the Community Mental Health Program for Curry County, effective January 1. Community Mental Health Programs in counties throughout Oregon are responsible for providing a system of appropriate, accessible, and effective safety net services to meet the mental health needs of community members. Until
recently, Curry Community Health served as the Community Mental Health Program for Curry County. With the dissolution of Curry Community Health in 2021, Adapt has worked closely with the Oregon Health Authority, the Curry County Board of Commissioners, Advanced Health and AllCare (two southern Oregon Coordinated Care Organizations), and Curry Community Health to ensure a smooth transition of services. “We have a long-standing working relationship with health and
social service leadership and treatment providers in Curry County to ensure access to behavioral health services, and we plan to continue the high standard of care provided to the community,” said Dr. Gregory Brigham, Adapt Integrated Health Care CEO. Adapt currently serves as the Local Mental Health Authority and the Community Mental Health Program for Douglas County. As a mental health service provider, Adapt offers comprehensive mental health services for children, adolescents, adults and families, including: 24‑hour crisis care,
forensic services for those involved with the justice system, school-based counseling, as well as an array of community support services to enable early diagnosis of mental illness and to build clients’ life skills, self-sufficiency and independence. in their treatment and community. Over the next few months, additional staffing and services will become available and will be announced through local media and Adapt’s website. “Our highest priority is to minimize disruption of services for existing clients and to make sure clients feel safe and informed during this transition,” said Brigham. To help maintain continuity of care for existing mental health clients and to improve access to mental health care, Adapt has welcomed current Community Mental Health Program employees to apply for positions with Adapt.

A Word, Please: Writing about holidays By June Casagrande The new year is here. What better time to learn how to write New Year’s, as well as Presidents Day, Mother’s Day and a full 12 months’ worth of hard-to-write holidays? Here’s your guide to navigating the apostrophes, plurals and capitalization of holidays in 2022. New Year’s/New Year/new year. When you’re talking about the holiday, New Year, always start with capital letters. “Happy New Year!” If you’re adding the s, put an apostrophe in front of it: “a New Year’s resolution.” When you’re talking in a generic sense about the coming year, lowercase it. “Wishing you health and happiness in the new year.” New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day. The Eve and the Day are part of the holidays’ proper names, so capitalize them. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is written without “Rev.” or “Dr.” in both Associated Press and Chicago editing styles. No commas needed around “Jr.” Valentine’s Day. Singular possessive. If you’re talking about your sweetheart or a card you’re sending, you can lowercase the v: Be my valentine. I’m sending a valentine. You can also call the holiday Saint Valentine’s Day. Presidents Day. There are several correct ways to write this holiday, which falls on the third Monday in February. AP style says no apostrophe: Presidents Day. Chicago style writes it as plural possessive, with the apostrophe after the s: Presidents’ Day. But the federal government and some states now call it Washington’s Birthday. Take your pick. St. Patrick’s Day. This March 17 holiday is singular possessive, so the apostrophe goes before the s. April Fools’ Day. Treat this one as plural possessive, with the apostrophe after the s: Fools’. If someone falls for an April Fools’ Day trick, you can call them an April fool with a lowercase f. Mother’s Day. Logic is useless for figuring out whether holiday names are singular possessive or plural possessive. Case in point: Mother’s Day. Yes, it’s a day to
recognize all mothers. But it’s treated as a singular possessive, with the apostrophe before the s. Think of this as the day belonging to the person you can call Mother. Fourth of July, July Fourth, the Fourth. Publishers spell out the word Fourth and capitalize it, even when it’s a nickname for the holiday: the Fourth. But that’s just because it’s a holiday. Regular dates usually use numerals: July 5, 2022, or July 5th, 2022. Veterans Day. Sometimes a word can be either possessive or an adjective, which is why farmers’ market and farmers market are both correct. In this Feb. 11 holiday, “Veterans” is usually considered adjectival, so no apostrophe. Thanksgiving Day. When you use “Day” as part of the name, go ahead and capitalize it. Christmas Day, Christmas Eve. This “Day” gets capitalized, too, anytime you choose to use it. Capitalize “Eve,” as well. Xmas. There’s no hyphen in Xmas. That part’s easy. More difficult is the question: Do you put “a” or “an” in front of it, like “a/an Xmas present”? Answer: It depends how you would pronounce it. If you would say “eksmas,” put “an” in front: an eksmas present. If you pronounce it “Christmas,” use a: a Christmas present. Either choice is fine. Bryan Garner, author of “Garner’s Modern American Usage,” recently polled followers on Twitter about how they would pronounce Xmas. Just over 45% of the 676 respondents said they’d pronounce it Christmas, while 55% say it eks-mas. So you can pick your preference. And, by the way, Xmas is not a reason to squabble over religion. The X is not designed, as some say, “to take the Christ out of Christmas.” Instead, the X represents the Greek letter “chi” — the first letter in Jesus’ name. “X has ancient antecedents as the symbol of Christ and the cross,” Garner writes. While we’re only in to the third week of our winter season, I’d like to give a big shout-out to the Oregon Department of Transportation, all of our first responders, Curry Road Department, search and rescue and law enforcement personnel. We’ve witnessed throughout Southern Oregon and especially our 5-county region the strong, collective effort from all of these managers and staffs as they consistently deal head-on with the bad weather affected roadways. Just like our various levels of firefighting departments that team up during fire seasons, we’ve watched the multi-agency assists particularly during the recent major storm events; all have been very impressive. Many thanks to those men and women
that worked in the rain, snow, wind and of course overcoming the terrible road conditions. All of our travelers, citizens and visitors are the beneficiaries of the great local successes when maintenance staff and equipment operators combine bringing the quickest possible repairs. Those results are effective, efficient and solid as their mission is to keep our pavements well-maintained, open, clear and safe. The team does it very well and it has become a source of pride for Oregon. On behalf of Wreaths Across America, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cape Sebastian Chapter and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4439, thank you, Curry Coastal Pilot, for publishing the change of venue for the Rogue River Cemetery Ceremony on December 18. With your help, over 100 volunteers joined together to lay 310 remembrance wreaths on the graves of United States veterans. Thank you for your support in making the first National Day of Wreaths Across America at the Rogue River Cemetery a day to remember. At the wreath laying, each volunteer was encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud and to take a moment to thank them for their service to our country. The wreaths that were laid were not done to decorate graves, but to remember the veteran’s lives. Each wreath is a gift of appreciation from a grateful America. Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, businesses, to our veterans, the U.S. Coast Guard servicemen stationed in Brookings, the VFW Post 4439, the Curry County Event Center that graciously provided a beautiful venue at the last minute, the Curry Health Network for the delicious cookies and hot drinks at the cemetery, the veterans and DAR members that presented 11 ceremonial wreaths (one for each branch of the United States Military Service, one in honor of Gold Star Families and one in honor of Rosie the Riveters), the Gold Beach High School Band and Dr. Jessica Carlson for providing the music and thank you to our honored guests, Dorothy Nickerson and Bud Dubay, World War II Navy veterans. Wreath Removal Day will take place on January 22 at 10 a.m. at the Rogue River Cemetery. All volunteers are invited to assist in removing the wreaths. No representation Of the 21 new laws listed in a report in the January 1 Oregonian, 16 were approved by an overwhelming majority in both
the state Senate and the state House of Representatives. The new laws address everything from public meetings law to affordable housing, racial equity to police reform and more. It is encouraging to see that our legislators in Salem could put aside partisan differences for the benefit of the people they serve. With at least one glaring exception. While there are 30 state senators, the vote tally for that legislative body never reached that number. As we in Senate District #1 are well aware, the person who was elected to represent us in the state Senate, Dallas Heard, refused to vote. Consequently, our voice was never heard. In Senate District #1, in round numbers, there are 38,000 registered Republicans, 21,500 registered Democrats and 36,000 non-affiliated voters. One must conclude that our lack of representation in the Oregon senate lies squarely at the feet of the local Republican parties. It is also clear that only the local Republican parties have the means to call for Mr. Heard’s resignation, and to find a person to replace him who will show up and vote. Pat Sherman Roseburg
Four billionaires The Pulitzer Prize-winning online news source ProPublica has been exposing the inequality in our federal tax system, and revealing that the extremely wealthy are not paying their fair share. Today’s ProPublica highlighted the four richest Americans: Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg and Elon Musk. Here is what they made and what they gave our government for the privilege of living and operating in America. Warren grew his wealth last year by $24 billion. He paid in taxes $24 million. His tax rate was one tenth of one percent. He paid a dollar for every thousand dollars richer he became last year. Jeff’s wealth grew the most by $99 billion. He paid almost $999 million in taxes – nearly a billion dollars. But, Jeff only paid 1% to America for the benefit of using America (and Americans) to help grow his wealth by nearly a hundred billion dollars in just one year. OK with that, my fellow 99 percenter? Michael (the “liberal billionaire”) grew by $23 billion last year and paid 1.3% of that in taxes. What a guy. Elon – who actually produces a product (electric cars) only made $14 billion and got nailed

We can enforce mask mandates Yesterday, my plan was to shop at a local business. Upon entering, it was quickly obvious the door sign of Oregon's mask mandate was being ignored by several customers as well as staff. Leaving quickly, I instead drove to a store in California where they did enforce mask mandates 100%. They received my shopping dollars once again. It's very frustrating that Brookings area businesses are not enforcing mask mandates for those of us who choose to listen to and believe our scientists and democratically elected officials instead of the "social media experts." Trying to shop locally does not feel safe at all with zero mask enforcement. When driving, I trust the person coming towards me will choose to obey the laws and mandates in place to keep all as safe as possible on the road. Why is it OK to so many to place their beliefs regarding COVID and mandated safety measures above the law? Before the greater good of their community? Why won't the owners and business owners in the area enforce the masking mandates? Remember no shoes no shirts no service? Rules can be enforced. You have to choose. Until then, I will continue shopping elsewhere. Until then, I do hope all those ranting about "my rights" will continue to stop at the red lights. After all, it is about choice. Right? School District (“District”) Board of Education (“District Board”) is currently elected using a “hybrid at-large” election system, meaning that governing board members must live in defined trustee areas, but are elected by voters of the entire District. On August 12, 2021, the District Board adopted Resolution # D21-22-4, declaring its intent to transition to by-trustee area elections, where each Board member must reside within a designated trustee area boundary, and is elected only by the voters in that trustee area. District Board members also sit as the Del Norte County Board of education (”County Board”), meaning any change to the method of election to the District Board will result in a corresponding change to the method of election for the County Board. As a result, on August 12, 2021, the County Board similarly adopted Resolution # C21-22-2, declaring its intent to transition to by-trustee area elections. On September 9 and September 23, 2021, the District and County Boards held two joint public hearings to receive input from the community on the trustee-area map creation process, pursuant to Elections Code section 10010, subdivision (a)(1). Harris Beach State Park rangers need 20 volunteers from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., Jan. 17, to help create a better wildlife corridor for animals that live in and near the park. The work party will remove brush, plants and limbs from around a fence that surrounds the campground. Rangers will then
remove the barbed wire barrier so wildlife can move freely and safely through the area. Volunteers must register in advance, and registration ends Jan. 10. Hand tools and other equipment will be provided when they arrive at the park. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old, be able to work with
hand tools and move on gravel and uneven surfaces. Please bring your own gloves and wear clothes suitable for the weather conditions. Jan. 17 is Martin Luther King Day and a designated national day of service, as well as the kickoff for the 100 Volunteer Projects for 100 Years series.
