Omicron leads to COVID surge in Curry County By DAVID RUPKALVIS The Pilot

As Omicron surges across Oregon, the impact is being felt in almost every county in the state. On Tuesday, the Oregon Health Authority reported an as-

tounding 28,307 new cases. That included 121 new cases in Curry County, one of the highest if not the highest one-day totals since the pandemic began. The OHA report was for four days, as the state holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday

delayed most reporting by a day. Despite the massive increase in cases, the lighter symptoms from Omicron were also seen with just 10 new deaths reported. After a relatively strong start to the year, with new cases in the low single digits in Curry County

for the first three days of 2022, the impact of the more contagious Omicron variant quickly began to add to the case count. In the last week, Curry County has reported 229 new cases of the virus. Since the beginning of the

pandemic, Curry County has reported 2,490 positive cases with 20 deaths associated to those who contracted the virus. With just over 23,000 people in the county, more than 10 percent More COVID, Page A2

An underground volcano that erupted near Tonga caused concern along the Oregon and California coasts Saturday morning. The volcanic eruption Friday night caused significant damage from tsunamis and ash in Tonga,

but it sent waves more than 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean. Around 7 a.m., notices from the Coos County Sheriff's Office, Curry County Sheriff's Office and the National Weather Service warned of tsunamis along the Pacific Northwest. The waves were expected to reach Northern California shortly

after 7 a.m., parts of Curry County by 7:30 and the Charleston and Bandon areas in Coos County shortly after 8 a.m. The warnings urged those in low-lying areas near the coast to be cautious an to evacuate to higher grounds. When the waves did arrive, the impact was minimal with waves

would not be seeking another term, many expected a freefor-all as numerous candidates announced. But to date just six had and last week one got a big boost. As of Tuesday, four Democrats have announced they are

running. Val Hoyle, the Oregon commissioner of labor and industries, announced she was running the same day DeFazio announced he would not seek re-election. Hoyle is a former Democratic member of the Oregon House

of Representatives, representing District 14 from 2009 to 2017. She ran for secretary of state, losing in the Democrat primary, before winning election as labor commissioner in 2018.

More comprehensive data analytics could help the Oregon State Police Patrol Services Division better project future staffing needs, deploy current resources and project overtime needs, according to a just-released OSP audit by Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan. The Oregon Secretary of State’s Audits Division focused on whether OSP’s workforce planning efforts adequately consider public needs and trooper safety. The audit contains four recommendations to the OSP to improve the law enforcement agency's ability to identify staffing needs when developing future budgets, ensure consistent and efficient deployment of trooper resources, and better project overtime needs for budget requests. “OSP’s presence on state highways is vital to the safety of motorists and their passengers,” Secretary of State Shemia Fagan said. “Better information and a more comprehensive approach could help build trust with Oregonians and improve public safety.” OSP currently analyzes existing data to determine the impact its troopers can have on public safety but uses a method that primarily focuses on population — which experts say is one of the least effective methods. Auditors identified a more comprehensive approach considering OSP’s workload allowing the agency to identify actual staffing needs when developing future budgets and better leverage existing troopers. The Audits Division also recommends OSP account for the changing law enforcement environment within its staffing strategy and methodology including assessing whether all current duties are aligned with the evolving nature of state policing public policy. Audit Recommendations To improve trooper staffing analyses, promote public safety, and make the best use of budgeted resources, OSP should: 1. Use available time-based data to analyze the Patrol Services Division’s workload and include the results when presenting budget requests to the Legislature. 2. Continue working with the Legislature to appropriately fund administrative support positions and fill vacant trooper positions. 3. Statewide, 75.6% of residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine with 65.7% fully vaccinated. COVID vaccines are available at most clinics, pharmacies and at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Brookings. There is no charge for the vaccine.

Guest Opinion Oh, Utah! When will you learn? By Mike Kaplan

A new video released by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox argues the big, semi-annual trade show called Outdoor Retailer should come back to Salt Lake City. This is despite opposition from leading brands, resorts like mine in Aspen and many nonprofit groups over the state’s environmental policies. Oh, Utah! Will you ever learn? You can’t have the things you love like clean air, wild lands and a stable climate and destroy them at the same time. You can’t roll back historic land conservation practices and hope your state will seem welcoming to hikers, climbers, fishers and skiers. The 2017 move to Colorado occurred for two reasons: First, the outdoor companies selling their tents, sleeping bags, hiking boots and backpacks didn’t want to do business in a state that was willfully and actively opposing protection of the very landscapes in which customers use those products. Yet elected officials were attempting to dismantle the Grand Staircase Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments. Second, outdoor industry leaders didn’t want to celebrate commerce in a state whose lawmakers were mostly opposed to acting on the very thing threatening that commerce — climate change. A few years ago, the Guardian reports, the Utah legislature passed a resolution urging the EPA to “cease its carbon dioxide reduction policies, programs, and regulations until climate data and global warming science are substantiated.” You can’t politically ignore, or slow-walk, action on climate change that is flooding, baking and burning cities and streams, mountains and fields, and expect businesses dependent on outdoor recreation to flock to your state. You have to care. And to act. Emerald Expositions, which owns and produces the event, has to realize that outdoor brands are not environment-agnostic anymore. The show that produces $56 million in revenue is about business, but business more than ever requires protecting the environment. Don’t get me wrong. I love Utah. I have fond memories of skiing in the Wasatch and I love the people, the landscapes, the rivers and the spirit. But Utah politics leaves me flat. Here in Colorado, we’re pioneering new laws to cut methane pollution and drive EV

Mike Kaplan adoption; to rein-in Hydrofluorocarbons and clean up our utility grid. We’ve got robust public lands protections and aggressive environmental leadership from the governor, both senators and both houses of the legislature. Electric vehicles hit almost 13 percent of market share in December, a few years after Colorado became the only state in the central U.S. to adopt California’s Zero Emissions Vehicles standard. We’re not perfect, but we’re the kind of place where businesses and government together recognize that they need to protect the landscape, and the climate, on which their economic success is based. Some things change, others don’t. President Trump gutted the Grand Staircase Escalante and Bear Ears monuments, with Utah’s support. President Biden reinstated them. Utah lawmakers moved off the dime on climate, commissioning a study called the “Utah Roadmap,” with a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by half over the next decade. Whether action will follow that analysis remains to be seen. As for the two monuments, state officials have engaged lawyers to sue the federal government over their restoration. Tribes, tired of their lands being used as a political football, are preparing to counter-sue. Until Utah begins to understand these things that matter, the Outdoor Retailer show needs to stay somewhere that does. Letters to the Editor Why the misinformation? I just wasted a lot of time logging in so I could read a letter to the editor by Steve Johnston (“wasted” because your web site requires far too many clicks to get to the online version of the Pilot that I have a subscription to). Why doesn’t someone on your staff read such letters to the editor before publishing the amalgam of misinformation that Mr Johnston’s letter contains? If people who are as literate and motivated as Mr Johnston think that that misinformation and partial information is of help to the community, then consider the next tier: people who are not so literate and motivated as Mr Johnston is, but who believe that

things they read in the newspaper are at least mostly factual. Letting dis-informative letters appear without a word of caution to these credulous, unsuspecting readers is a disservice to our community. Your mission is to keep the citizens informed, not misinformed. I hate to be uninformed, but it is so much trouble to get logged in to my subscription and then to read nonsense posing as advice from another reader that I may have to cancel my subscription just to protect myself. Sharing a variety of opinions Last week, the Curry Coastal Pilot ran a letter to the editor where the writer questioned the effectiveness of masks in regards to COVID-19. Since the letter ran, we have received several complaints from readers who felt it was unfair to run a letter many disagree with. I am writing this to explain our policy when it comes to letters to the editor, guest opinions and, frankly, our opinions on our editorial page. First, the editorial page is set up as a page to share different opinions on subjects that impact Curry County and its residents. The key is this page is for opinions. When it comes to COVID-19, there are many different opinions on what steps should be taken and required to combat the dangers of the ongoing pandemic. While many believe wearing masks is a vital step to combat the COVID pandemic, many others view the mask mandates as an unnecessary government overreach. In the last week, even the CDC updated it guidelines, admitting cloth masks do not offer much protection against the Omicron variant of COVID. The CDC now recommends people were N-95 or K-95 masks to protect against the virus.

Since the editorial page is an opinion page, letters and guest columns that would not be permitted in the news section of the paper are allowed here. By allowing different opinions, our goal is to create a location where the community can have a conversation, not just about COVID, but about any issue that is important to the community. We have run similar letters both for and against steps taken by the city of Brookings when it comes to meals provided by St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. As a paper, we have not taken a public stand on St. Timothy's or masks in regards to COVID. For the record, the Curry Coastal Pilot an its parent company, Country Media, have always been firmly on the side of the CDC and state requirements for COVID. We have long required masks in all of our offices, and Country Media also required all its employees to get vaccinated against COVID. Despite our belief that masks and vaccinations work to help combat the pandemic, we understand not all of our readers agree. And we value their opinions. That is why we allow letters and occasional guest columns that differ from what we may believe. Our views as a newspaper and

as Country Media will always be clear because they are shown under this section labeled editorials. We also understand our readers and the communities we cover will have different opinions. While we could refuse to allow dissenting opinions in our newspapers, that would not lead to greater community conversations on issues important to Curry County and other communities where Country Media reports the news. Therefore, we do allow opinions on the editorial page that might differ with our own, and we do cover news stories where those involved might have different opinions than ones we carry. Our goal is always to present all sides of a story, and like many stories, COVID-19 has opinions that are vastly different. The official opinion of the Curry Coastal Pilot is that masks do work in slowing the spread of COVID. We require our employees to wear masks because we believe that. Having said that, we understand others think differently, and in an effort to encourage a community conversation, we try to run opinions on all sides of the issue.

They are not part of the solution; they are the problem.

Both known for encouraging viewers to believe false conspiracy theories like "Trump won.” Perhaps the writer will provide us with his “science" source next time. So until I receive scientific information that corroborates the writer's claims masks don't work and provide proof of his other outlandish claims like I'll turn into a "fearful zombie,” I am becoming "dehumanized to accept isolation and fear each other" and "willing to be controlled by a tyrannical police state.” I'll feel comfortable following the real science.

At the January 10, Brookings City Council meeting, City Manager Janell Howard suggested that St. Timothy's Episcopal Church should use some of their own money to rent a commercial space for their medical clinic. Since when is it the responsibility of the Episcopal church to provide medical services to the community? Answer: It is not their responsibility. Who is responsible for our medical services? Answer: Our city and county governments: You know - "to protect and to serve," to provide fire services, police, water, etc. To protect the citizens from harm, from things like fires, earthquakes and pandemics. So what is the city and/or the county doing to protect us? Answer: nothing, absolutely nothing. Meanwhile, what is the city doing? Answer: trying their best to shut down the heroic work St. Timothy's is doing for our community. Second Map Consideration Hearing for the Establishment of Trustee Areas for the Governing Board of the Del Norte County Unified School District and County Board of Education The Del Norte County Unified School District (“District”) Board of Education (“District Board”) is currently elected using a “hybrid at-large” election system, meaning that governing board members must live in defined trustee areas, but are elected by voters of the entire District. Vernon Theodore Crockett, 89 of Coquille, passed away due to complications from a hip fracture on January 7, 2022. Vern, the youngest of Donald and Judith Crockett’s three children grew up along the Chetco River in Curry County, Oregon. After graduating from Brookings Harbor High School in 1949 he enlisted in the Army. Upon discharge from the service Vernon married Joan Pettegrew in 1955 and they began dairy ranching in Harbor, Oregon. Vernon and his brother Davy also had a logging operation at this time. In 1962 Vernon and Joan sold their Curry County ranch and bought another dairy on the North Bank Road along the Coquille River. Along with milking 80 cows, they were involved with several bowling leagues over the years, pinochle clubs, and he was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Vern frequently informed his three children (who didn’t believe him) he was someday going to retire from dairy ranching. It was a complete surprise when they actually sold the ranch in 1986! However, Vernon and Joan moved only a mile up river from that farm “to keep an eye on things” we suspect. Joan passed away in 2007. They had been married for 52 years. Over his life time Vernon had built for himself, neighbors, friends, friends of friends, and family many wells, barns, house additions, and dairy parlors. He had poured countless concrete slabs, sparked farm equipment and heavy machinery back to life, and raised cows from death’s door. He would solve building quandaries and do difficult math problems in his head. Vern would outpace any youthful hired help in the summer, much to their distress. However, Vern did try to time his lunch breaks to catch the current installment of the soap opera “Days of Our Lives”. Vernon will always be remembered for his grace on the ballroom dance floor, his ability to eat mass quantities of Joan’s pies, his competitive cribbage and pinochle games, his enthusiastic blurting out Jeopardy questions before the

TV contestant could respond to Alex Trebek, his dogged political arguments, and his having a story for every conceivable situation which would remind him of yet another yarn. A true ScotchIrishman. Later in life a favorite haunt was Wayne’s Barber Shop in downtown Coquille, and not necessarily for a haircut. Vernon is survived by his wife of twelve years, Barbara Couch Crockett. He is also survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Debbie Crockett and Jerry Brask of Vancouver, Washington, Diane and Dave Buche of Myrtle Point, Oregon, and Cheryl and Harlan Harris, who reside in Poulsbo, Washington; eight grandchildren; eleven greatgrandchildren; and sisterin-law, Joyce Crockett, of Smith River, California. We still do not believe you ever made a perfect lemon meringue pie, Dad. Private Family graveside services will be held at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens. They volunteered at the local library, St. George Lighthouse association, Southwestern Oregon Community College, Azalea Park, and at the Presbyterian Church. They made many friends and played some great pranks on a few of them (Bob was known for this and Jane tolerated it). Jane lived the last years of her life constantly surrounded by family from all sides. She is survived by her son Dave; grandchildren Nichole, Brett, and Slade; and nieces and nephews Kathy, Wendy, Colette, and Greg. A service will be held for Jane in Stayton, Oregon.

Jane Louise Faires, 94 years old, passed away on December 5th 2021 - she was at home surrounded by family and loved ones. Born in Iowa, Jane moved out west at a young age and grew up in Garden Grove, California, back in the day when it was orange

orchards and still a small town. She was raised by kind, loving parents and an older sister Ilene. Jane met and married Robert (Bob) Faires while she was in school studying to be a librarian. They raised two children, Marsha and Dave, while she continued her career as head librarian for the city of Pomona, California. Jane was a true community member - she always helped out at church and with a variety of local volunteer organizations. Jane and Bob loved the outdoors and being active, they camped and were constantly going on adventures to support Bob’s fishing habit. Upon retirement, both Jane and Bob moved to Brookings, Oregon

Assessor: Veteran’s tax exemptions available Jim Kolen, Curry County assessor, reports that some war veterans may qualify for a property tax exemption of the tax liability on as much as $28,886 of the assessed value of their owner occupied residence. To qualify, veterans must have been members of the United States armed forces, discharged or released under honorable conditions and must own and live on the property for which they will receive

the property tax exemption. The veteran must be certified by the Veterans Administration as having a 40% or more service or non-service connected disability. Surviving spouses of deceased veterans, who have not remarried, also qualify, even if the veteran was not disabled. Veterans may receive a disability certification from their own physician rather than the Veteran’s Administration. With a physician’s certification a

veteran will be required to file applications annually and their total gross income cannot exceed 185% of the annual Federal Poverty Guidelines. Applications are available at and must be filed with the Curry County Assessor by April 1. The Dream It, Be It program was developed by Soroptimist International and is designed specifically for girls in secondary school.
