explained the ordinance, which the council debated four times before it was approved last week. The ordinance will allow rideshare drivers to begin operating, but they must first get a city business license, have their vehicles inspected and provide proof of a clean drug test. In addition, only one ride-share vehicle may be parked at a single residence in the city. Chapanar said Coos Bay looked at similar ordinances in

several cities to help build the one approved by the council. “I think this proposed ordinance is in line with a lot of cities,” Chapanar said. “It’s consistent. It’s enforceable with the current staff we have.” Since early March, the council discussed the ordinance four times and made several changes at the request of the local taxi companies. Most of the changes related to safety issues such as drug tests and safe vehicles.

Dick Leshley, the former owner of Yellow Cab in Coos Bay, told the council the ordinance they approved was much improved. “I came tonight to say thank you very much,” he said. “Watching how politics works is very fascinating to me. Position 3 commissioner’s race narrows slightly By DAVID RUPKALVIS

Oregon taxpayers can expect to share a $3 billion kicker. The kicker tax credit goes into effect when the actual state revenue exceeds the forecasted revenue by at least 2%. An amount is then returned to the taxpayers through a credit on their tax returns. The new kicker tax credit figures are announced in the just-released state revenue forecast. “The economy continues to boom. Jobs, income, spending, and production are all rising quickly. However, pessimism about the expansion is growing,” that is the openinåg statement in the June 2022 Oregon Economic and Revenue Forecast issued by the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis. “Inflation is at multi-decade highs, eroding household budgets,” the summary reads. “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine created an oil shock and raised fears of increased conflict. A new round of pandemic-related shutdowns in China is set to exacerbate global supply chain struggles.” The summary states that the economic dynamics are shifting. “No longer is the U.S. or Oregon in recovery mode, but in net expansion territory,” the summary reads. “The challenges, risks, and trends associated with a mid-cycle expansion are different than those faced during the initial recovery.” The summary claims the 2022 personal income tax filing season “has been shocking.” The tax season payments will come in more than $1.2 billion (70%) larger than last year. The summary states that the unexpected revenue growth seen this year has left Oregon with unprecedented balances this biennium, followed by a record kicker in 2023-25. Kickers The projected personal kicker is $3 billion, which will be credited to taxpayers when they file their returns in Spring 2024. The projected corporate kicker is $931 million and will be retained for educational spending. Even so, if balances are not spent, net resources for the 202325 biennium will have increased by $427 million relative to the March 2022 forecast, according to the summary. Reaction Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said the revenue forecast indicates

With all the votes turned in by Election Day now counted, Melissa Cribbins continues to hold a comfortable lead in the race for Position 3 commissioner, but her supermajority negating a runoff has slipped some. A new state law allows all votes postmarked by May 17 to be counted as long as the ballots are delivered to the county clerk’s office within seven days of the election. Therefore, the final count will not be released until May 24. With all the early votes counted, Cribbins has received 6,630 votes, or 51.97%. To guarantee she retains her seat on the board of commissioners without facing a challenge in November, Cribbins must keep her vote count over 50%. Bandon businessman Rod Taylor has moved up slightly, with 4,915 votes, or38.53%, and Chase Carlson is third with 1,169 votes, or 9.16%. The other two county races appear to be over as incumbent Position 1 Commissioner John Sweet and county clerk candidate Julie Brecke hold comfortable leads in three-person races. Sweet has received 6,738 votes, or 53.93% of those cast, in the Position 1 commissioner’s race. Pam Lewis collected 4,624 votes, or 37.01%, while Cristina Bettesworth received 1,088 votes, or 8.71%. In the race for county clerk, Brecke has recorded 6,955 votes, or 59.05%, to close in on the victory during her first run for office. Diane Rich is in second with 3,314 votes, or 28.14%, while Matthew Borgens has received 1,470 votes, or 1248%. After surviving the downturn in tourism due to COVID-19, the Bandon City Council will discuss whether to create a Rainy Day Fund to help fund essential city services if a future downturn occurs.

The council discussed the issue during its regular meeting Monday, May 23, at the Bandon City Council Chambers. In documents presented to the city council, City Manager Dan Chandler explained that since revenue for the city government is heavily reliant on tourism, things like pandemics or natural

disasters could devastate the city if there is no reserve funding available. He, therefore, recommends the council establish the Rainy Day fund, which would be used only in crisis. to dominate the field. Secretary of State Tobias Read was the only real competition, garnering 100,555 votes, or 32.72%. No other candidate received more than 2.12% of the votes cast. On the Republican side, 19 candidates vied for the nomination, which was much more open. Drazan received 56,498 votes, or 23.64% to lead the way. Bob Tiernan finished second with 44,494 votes, or 18.62%. Sandy Mayor Stan Pulliam placed third, receiving just less than 10% of the vote. Curry County Commissioner Court Boice received 2,845 votes, or 1.19%, beating seven other candidates. In Coos County, the Democrat race was much closer. Kotek led the way, but barely, receiving 1,430 votes, or 40.97%, while Read had 1,379 votes, or 39.51%. In the GOP race, Tiernan led the way, receiving 1,087 votes, or 27.41%. Drazan was chosen by 835 voters, or 21.05%. Boice received 216 votes, 5.45%, in Coos County.

Strong state revenues, coupled with an unemployment rate that is back down to pre-pandemic levels, should be welcome news for Oregonians, Brown stated. “However, I know that not all Oregonians are feeling these positive effects, especially given rising costs of living,” she said. Brown said the continued strength in the economy will allow the legislature to look at additional one-time investments in the coming budget cycle.

“Like those we’ve recently made in housing, behavioral health, and child care—to further spur growth and support working families, so that all Oregonians see and feel the benefits of our economic bounce back,” she said. Brown warned that even with revenue growth, the state needs to proceed with caution and plan for the future. “Strong leadership in Oregon has led the state to a place where we have ample reserves to help us weather unprecedented times,” Brown said. “We need to continue that forward-looking leadership as we head into the next budget cycle. We have to be careful. “Experts are seeing storm clouds on the

horizon. Oregon has done a good job saving. We’ll keep moving forward.” Oregon Senate Republican Leader Tim Knopp (R-Bend) said the $3 billion kicker will be a much-needed break from the increasing burden of inflation. “The kicker continues to act as a check against the Democrat’s continuous urge to blow out the spending,” Knopp said. “Now, more than ever, it’s essential to protect the kicker. Too much spending got us into this inflation mess, it’s not going to get us out. Knopp also urged caution. “Our economists are predicting an economic downturn soon,” he said. “We must budget wisely for the future.”

Through Election Day, 1,856 voters have cast ballots against the bond while 1,789 voted in favor. Some of the most interesting results have come in precinct committee person elections, although it appears every person who was on the ballot was elected to one of the positions. In rural Coquille, four names were on the ballot, with three Bonita Clarke, Janet Tilton and David

Tilton each receiving 222 votes. Judith Barkley was just behind with 116 votes. In a Coos Bay Republican race, eight people were on the ballot, and all eight received between 108 and 117 votes. According to the county clerk’s office, the final vote count will be released by 5 p.m. May 24, with the vote then going to the board of commissioners to be certified.

Obituaries Jeannette Mae Lilienthal Brunell Sweet

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Jeannette Mae Lilienthal Brunell Sweet passed away peacefully on September 2nd, 2021 at the age of 94. Jeannette was born on January 16th, 1927 in Yakima, Washington to Lilly Mary Finchum and Clarence Oliver Phillips. She was an only child and soon after her birth her father left. In the late 1930s, her mother met and married Herman Lilienthal and moved to Coosten, Oregon, she would live the rest of her life in the Coos Bay area. Jeanette’s mother, Lilly, was her teacher through Fifth grade which is where she developed her love for teaching. She often spent her mornings milking cows before catching the school bus. She graduated from North Bend High School in 1944 and shortly after she earned a degree in Elementary Education from Southern Oregon College. She was drawn back to Bay Area and started teaching at Lakeside Elementary. She soon met Dell Brunell and they married on June 10, 1950, after a brief

courtship. They moved into their house up Coos River where she resided for 71 years. Dell and Jeannette were married for 40 years (until Dell’s passing) and have four daughters (Anna, Helen, Nancy & Connie) and one foster daughter (Patricia). Together they enjoyed traveling the world, raising their daughters, and going to University of Oregon sporting events (Go Ducks). She would frequently talk about their travels, but her favorite memory was seeing Passion of the Christ in Oberammergau, Germany. In 2005 Jeanette married Ralph Sweet and they enjoyed 14 beautiful years together before he passed away. They loved living up the river and watching the wildlife in their backyard. A great joy in Jeanette’s later life was the addition of Sweet Family. Nothing made Jeannette happier than the holidays when the family would come together. She loved watching her great-grandkids play and teaching old family recipes to her grandkids. Throughout her life, Jeannette was involved in many community organizations and was passionate about mentoring people in the community. She was a 4-H leader, involved in many Masonic organizations, on the church council at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and enjoyed PEO. Jeannette believed in the importance of giving back to the community so we could all see it flourish. Her hands helped shape many lives with a simple guiding

I have also asked him not to drive them anywhere on Wednesdays. I make sure I work from home on that day, but all of this doesn’t seem like enough, and I want him to stop. I have thought about divorce for this and other reasons, but I worry his drinking would get worse. I’ve also considered doing an intervention with family. I’m at the end of my rope and ready to do something, but what is the next step? -- REACHED MY LIMIT IN ILLINOIS DEAR REACHED: Step one should be to attend some Al-Anon meetings. This is an organization founded to help the friends and families of someone with an alcohol problem, which it appears your husband has. Those meetings will give you perspective. Your next step will be to figure out what divorce may mean for you and your children financially. Once you have that information, tell your husband -- while he is sober and you are calm -- that you have reached your limit and, unless he is willing to quit drinking, you are going to leave him. of Science in Forest Management. Following two years of active duty in the US Army, Blair entered the forest management industry in Toledo, Oregon as a forester. He continued to work for the GeorgiaPacific Corporation for 38 years, mainly in the Coos County area as a Resource Manager. He was ultimately responsible for Georgia-Pacific’s Oregon timberlands consisting of 300,000 acres until his retirement in October, 2001. In addition to his forestry work, he served as an active member of the US Army Reserve for over 33 years retiring at the rank of full Colonel. In his retirement, Blair enjoyed traveling, gardening, volunteering countless hours and resources to community organizations including

Coos County Master Gardener Association, Oregon Coast Music Association, and the Coos Bay Visitor Information Center. He also made significant financial contributions to Southwestern Oregon Community College and Charleston Marine Life Center. A private burial service for the family was held April 12, 2022 at the historic Adams Cemetery in Molalla, OR. The money could not be used to create new programs or to fund elements that should be funded through the general fund. The council will have the option of setting aside a portion of the reserve balance specifically to fund the retirement system. To use the funding in the future, the city must determine that critical services cannot be funded without using the reserves. The city manager will present a case to the council, which will make any final decision on whether or not to spend the money.

Censorship isn’t the solution to social media’s ills

Technology is tampering with freedom of speech, and we don’t know what to do about it. At issue are the global platforms Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and the disturbing propaganda, disinformation and lies propagated on them. The inclination, on the left and the right, is to censor. It is a terrible solution, more toxic and damaging to the body politic than the disease. The left would like to shut down Fox Cable News and its principal commentator, Tucker Carlson. The right would like to have Twitter sold, presumably to Elon Musk, so that it stops blocking tweets from the right, notably those from former President Donald Trump. How our society and others deal with the downside of social media — racial incitement, disinformation, mendacity and opinions that are offensive to a minority, whether that is the disabled or an ethnic group — is a work in progress. The instinct is to shut them down, shut them up. The tool — that old monster solution — is censorship. The first trouble with censorship is that it has to define what is to be eradicated. Take hate speech. The British Parliament is struggling with a bill to limit it. The social networks seek to exclude it, and there are U.S. laws against crimes inspired by it. How do you define it, hate speech? When is it fair comment? When is it satire? When is it truth taken as hate? I say if you can untie that knot, go ahead and censor. But I also know you can’t untie it without savaging free speech, doing violence to the First Amendment, arresting creativity and hobbling humor. The censor is often as much clothed in moral raiment as in political garb. Take Thomas Bowdler and his sister, Henrietta, who in 1807 published an expurgated version of the works of Shakespeare. Henrietta did most of the work on the first 20 plays, later Thomas finished all 36. They expunged sex, blasphemy and double entendre. Thomas was an admired scholar, not a crackpot, although that might be today’s judgment. Oddly, the Bowdlers are credited with increasing the readership of Shakespeare. People reached for the forbidden fruit; they always do. Likewise, many a novel would have avoided success if it hadn’t been serially banned, like D.H. Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” The moral censorship of movies by the Hays Office, starting in 1934, didn’t save the audienc-

es from moral turpitude. It just led to bad movies. The censors often begin with specific words; words, which it can be argued, represent offense to some group or some social standing. So specific words become demonized — whether it is the naming of a sports team or a colloquial word for sex, the urge to censor them is strong. Jokes, like the English ones about the Welsh or the Scots ones about the English, became victim to a newly minted sensitivity, where political activists sell the idea that the joked about are victims. The only victim is levity, to my mind. When you start down this slope there is no apparent end. Euphemisms take over from plain speech, and we live in a society in which the use of the wrong word can suggest that you are not fit for public office or to teach. Areas around ethnicity and sexual orientation are particularly fraught. Until the 1960s and the civil rights movement, newspapers de facto censored people of color: They ignored them — a particularly egregious kind of censorship. At The Washington Daily News where I once worked, a now defunct but lively evening newspaper in the nation’s capital, some of us once ransacked the library for photos of Blacks. There were none. From its founding in 1927 until the civil rights movement took off, the newspaper simply hadn’t published news of that community in a city that had a burgeoning African-American population. That was collective censorship as pernicious as the kind that both political extremes would now like to impose on speech. Alas, censorship — banning someone else’s speech — isn’t going to redress the issue of the rights of those maligned or lied to or excluded from social media. In print and traditional broadcasting, libel has been the last defense. Libel laws are clearly inadequate and puny against the enormity of social media, but they are a place to begin. A new reality must, and will in time, get new mechanisms to contend with it. One of those mechanisms shouldn’t be censorship. It is always the first tool of dictatorship but should be an anathema in democracies. For example, it is an open issue as to whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would have been able to invade Ukraine if he hadn’t first censored the Russian media. Letters to the Editor Tax is the last straw There will be at least one less option for tourists to stay when looking at Charleston for their next vacation. As a vacation rental owner in Charleston, the new 9.5% tax on short term lodging revenue puts our small business in the red. On $60,000 in revenue in 2020, we lost $2,000. We paid a local cleaner $15,000, landscaper $5,000, local laborers such as plumber and electricians cost nearly $3,000, and all utilities, supplies (bought locally), gift baskets (bought from Chucks and Cranberry Suites) ran at about $4,000 for the year. Mortgage, taxes and insurance put us in the red. Adding another $6,000 in taxes will boost our loss to nearly $10,000 if we kept operating. However our decision has been made. If we are going to lose money regardless, and get taxed

on revenue (that is not profit), we have no other choice but to shut it down and cut the $25,000+ in expenses we spend locally. So what would have generated the county $6,000 in revenue is going to cost the county $25,000 in consumption. There are no Marriott’s or Hiltons in Charleston, only small business owners with razor thin margins that cannot afford a tax on revenue. The affordability of Charleston is one of the key attractions to the area. Why are we putting this burden only on short term lodging owners? There are already too few lodging options in Charleston (try booking a place to stay in the summer....it’s impossible unless your booking 6+ months out). This tax puts Charleston lodging at a competitive disadvantage to our neighboring coastal counties. Robert M Portland

Does anyone care? It is simply amazing just how lax we are about the way our cities look along both the southbound and northbound 101. Even though we are coming into the tourist season, nobody just seems to care how the sides of the roads are. The weeds on both sides of the roads haven’t been addressed at all at this time of year. And citizens aren’t the only ones to blame. North Bend and Coos Bay are equally at fault and most assuredly don’t care. C’mon people and city officials, let’s stat start showing some pride in this area. Memorial Day: Pause to Honor By KELLY FITZPATRICK Guest Column

Memorial Day is a day when we stand united as one nation to pause and to remember. We pause to honor those service members who died while in service to this nation — in service to us all — to preserve and defend our individual freedoms. Since the Civil War, almost 6,000 Oregonians have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this nation. On Memorial Day, we honor them and the more than 1.2 million service members who have given their lives nationwide. This year, our agency will, for the first time in three years, have the chance to once again gather for an in-person Memorial Day ceremony at the Oregon World War II Memorial in Salem. This memorial honors the more than 3,700 Oregonians who gave their lives in World War II. We — as veterans and Americans — who came after them, owe so much for their sacrifice and the peace and stability that they helped secure for our nation and the world. Each and every one of their names is forever engraved on the granite walls that line this remarkable memorial. If you have the chance, I encourage you to visit this site and spend some time reflecting on their sacrifice. And as you walk any veteran memorial and remember those to whom it is dedicated, I urge you to also pause and remember those service members who came before and those who came after. This year’s ceremony is dedicated not to a particular generation of service members or conflict, but to all Oregonians — throughout time — who wore the uniform and, especially, those nearly 6,000 individuals and their families who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our

freedoms and our way of life. Every service member had a story, and many faced additional challenges beyond the common trials and tribulations of war. Some were poor and uneducated. Some were privileged, with college or advanced degrees. Some were working men and women, with spouses and families. Some were 15- and 16-year-olds who lied about their dates of birth just to enlist. Some were Black or mixed race, Hispanic or Latinx, Asian American or Pacific Islander, and they volunteered to serve a country that did not afford them rights or opportunities equal to those of their fellow countrymen and service members at the time of their service. Before the Korean War, our military served in segregated units, and many endured prejudice and bigotry from their own country even as they risked their lives and freedom to protect it. Some of the courageous Oregonians who served and gave their lives in service to our country and whose memories we honor today were women who would not even be recognized as veterans of the United States Armed Forces until the 1970s. Others were quietly transgender, gay, lesbian or queer, who grappled with the pain of giving their all to a country that did not want every part of them, that did not allow them to serve openly as their true, authentic selves. We as a nation and, especially, as veterans who followed in their footsteps, owe an additional debt of gratitude to the brave soldiers, sailors, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard members who served under these policies and conditions. Their courage, selflessness, dignity and exceptional service did much to sway public opinion and pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future. On this Memorial Day, let us

Last week, the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act of 2022, legislation led by chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio, advanced out of committee and will now head to the House floor for consideration. Triple track and field titles for South Coast Coquille girls win team championship for first time By JOHN GUNTHER For The World

EUGENE — For the first time in school history, Coquille is state champion in a girls team sport. The Red Devils put together two big days at Hayward Field led by Trinidy Blanton and Hailey Combie with a strong boost form a pair of pole vaulters to capture the Class 2A state title on Friday night. “I’m amazed,” said Blanton. “I’m so glad we pulled this off. “It’s unreal. I’m so proud of all of us.” Combie, who has been a part of a number of strong track, volleyball and basketball teams for Coquille, spent time hugging her teammates in celebration. “I’m a state champion,” she said. “It’s awesome.” Coquille took the lead early in the meet when Blanton won the javelin and teammate Callie Millet was fourth, but Regis had taken the lead away from the Red Devils on Friday. That’s when the pole vaulters, Millet and Reagan Krantz, provided their big boost. Krantz finished second in the event and Millet was fourth, giving Coquille 13 points in the team race. When Blanton later finished second in the 200 and

Regis didn’t score as well in the 300 hurdles, the Red Devils were able to celebrate. “This is crazy,” said Coquille coach Kent Rilatos. “It’s great to get over the hump,” added assistant Jake Cochran. “It was just a total team effort. “The pole vault was huge.” In the pole vault, Krantz and Millet both cleared their first two heights — 7 feet, 10 inches and 8-4 —without a miss. Even though Millet was unable to get over 8-10, that guaranteed her fourth place. Krantz got over 8-10 on her first try, which gave her second place. Oakland’s Jolyn Vogel-Hunt won with an eventual winning height of 10-3. “I’m pretty happy with how we did,” Krantz said, adding that she had to overcome nerves in the event knowing how important it was. Millet, who also placed fourth in the javelin Thursday, said she was thinking “just focus.” It worked. Their points put Coquille in front for good. Seniors help Bandon boys capture Class 2A crown By JOHN GUNTHER For The World

EUGENE — Bandon’s seniors went out on top. Twins Trevor and Hunter Angove and Ansen Converse led the Tigers to the Class 2A boys team title Friday at Hayward Field. Bandon finished with 56 points to outdistance the rest of the field. Enterprise was second with 49. Trevor Angove won an individual event for the second straight day, taking the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 4 ¼ inches — he also won the long jump on Thursday with a jump of 20 feet, 2 ¼ inches. That was an inch better than Waldport’s Zak Holsey. Myrtle Point’s Troy Warner finished third with a leap of 20-0 ¾. Trevor’s busy day Friday also included finishing fourth in the high jump and sixth in the 400 meters, and he was recognized as athlete of the meet for scoring the most points among Class 2A boys, but he was most excited for his squad as a whole. “I’m very excited about that,” he said “That’s what we were hoping for. I’m proud of everybody and how well we’ve done.” Trevor was favored in the triple jump, while the long jump title was a surprise. The 400, too. “I just wanted to get us a couple points,” he said of that event. “I wanted the team title 100 percent.” Angove’s time in the 400 was 54.52 seconds. In the high jump, he cleared 6 feet. Those two events probably cost him a chance to set a new best in the triple jump. “I went from the high jump to the 400, straight to the triple jump,” he said. “I’ve been on my

feet the last six hours. It’s been a long day.” But a great one. “It’s amazing,” said Hunter. “All the dedication and hard work finally paid off. All of us played a part in this.” Hunter did his almost all his work on Thursday, winning the pole vault for the second straight year. “It’s great,” he said. “It feels good.” The senior didn’t enter the competition until nearly all the other competitors were out and he won it when he cleared 13 feet. Hunter moved the bar to 15 feet, 7 inches and missed on all three tries. A week earlier, he cleared 15 feet, one quarter inch to break the school record at the district meet. He thought he had a shot at the higher mark. “I felt good,” he said. “I was running fast.” A short time later Thursday, Trevor got his surprise long jump win. Trevor said he did not feel he was jumping well, and talking to the other competitors got the same vibe from them. “I just had the best worst day,” he said. Converse’s contributions came in the distance races. He would have liked to finish, but he gave the Tigers a boost as well. He followed his third-place finish in the 3,000 Thursday (9:18.55) by placing fourth in the 1,500 on Thursday, crossing the line in 4:19.84. “That we managed to win a state title when we didn’t all do our best is cool,” he said. Junior Damian Avalos added a third-place finish in the 800, smashing his personal best with

a time of 2:03.39. And the Tigers finished eighth in the 4x400 relay with the squad of Hunter Angove, Patton Clark, Converse and Avalos that finished in 3:43.83. Bandon coach Brent Hutton said the team had been talking about winning the team title all season. “It was neat,” he said. “The team that won it last was the last time the meet was at Hayward Field (before it was renovated). “We thought it would be cool to win it the first season it was in the new Hayward.” Bandon wasn’t the only South Coast boys team with highlights Friday. Coquille, which took a huge hit when sprinter Gunner Yates was disqualified from the meet for not giving a true effort in the 400 meters on Thursday after aggravating a lingering hip injury, got the last laugh in the 4x100 relay anyway, when the team of Sabastian Montenero, Drake Watts, Brock Willis and Godfred Amanoo won in 45.49 seconds. “The story of the meet is the 4x100 team winning after losing Gunner,” Coquille coach Kent Rilatos said. “To have the shock they went through with Gunner and for them to rally — that was amazing.” Yates easily posted the top qualifying time in the 100 (11.09) but didn’t think he could do the 400 and come back in the 200 and then the sprints and the relay on Friday. He had planned to false start, but told coaches a meet official told him to not false start, and instead take a few steps and stop. That turned out to be a wrong decision. Throw in a second-place finish by Alex Garcia-Silver in both the 3,000 on Friday and the 1,500 on Saturday and a runner-up effort in the opening 4x100 relay Saturday and Marshfield set a high bar for the other teams to try to catch. The quartet was the same for both relays — Aaron Hutchins, Elijah Fox, Cael Church and Parks. And none of them was in an individual sprinting event at state. “They’re not fast enough to be 100-meter kids and not quite fast enough to be 400-meter kids,” Scriven said. “They do it for each other.” That was the case for both Fox

and Hutchins, who accepted a strategy by the coaches that they not compete in individual events at the district meet so they would be fresh for the relays. “I was disappointed at first,” said Hutchins, a senior. “But it gave us a chance to win the state title.” In the first relay, Marshfield finished in 44.29, just behind Sky-Em League foe Elmira, which won in 44.20. “We just work together,” Church said. “We’ve had the best chemistry since the start of the season. Once we got the chemistry down, we were so smooth.” In the longer relay, the order of the runners was a little different, with Church running second and Fox third, but the result was similar. The Pirates finished in

3:32.27, trailing Henley (3:27.82) and Hidden Valley (3:28.08). Marshfield was in the range of third or fourth the entire way, with each runner finishing his leg strong. Parks brought it home. “I was just trying to keep in fourth,” he said, knowing that would be enough to clinch the title. “But then, I thought, this is the last meet, give everything. Suddenly, my legs just got another gear.” The Pirates’ only other points came from a sixth-place finish in the discus by Matthew Allen on Friday and a sixth-place effort by Ismael Rodriguez in the 800 on Saturday. The result was enough points for the title. Marshfield finished with 57 and Henley was second with 52.

EUGENE — Marshfield’s boys rode one big event, one stellar distance runner and two fast relay teams to a state title. The Pirates edged out the rest of the competition in a tight Class 4A team race that wasn’t decided until the final relay, where the Pirates finished third to clinch the team crown. “I’m happy for them,” Marshfield coach Chad Scriven said. “It’s very telling of a team championship that we only had one kid win a title. “The kids did what they had to do. They made the finals and where they could, they moved up.” Marshfield had been in front the entire meet after Jonathan

The school’s secret? “It’s a lifestyle,” said Wilson, also a sophomore. “We take the time to stay out there all year long,” added Parks. “We dedicate our lives to it.” Allen had a throw of 127-11 to place sixth in the discus. As the Pirates celebrated their title, Scriven was a proud coach. “I’m really happy, especially for the seniors and what they had to go through the last four years,” he said.
