n the 18th anniversary of AmeriO ca’s Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, two Crescent City residents took to horseback,

flying their American flags and patriotic pride. Julianne Logefeil and Cheri Phillips, riding their horses Magnum and Peaches, drew shouts, cheers and honks of encouragement from passing motorists as they rode from Arnett Street, along Northcrest Avenue, toward U.S. Highway 101 and on down to the beach. Logefeil, a member of the Crescent City Diamonds ‘N’ Dust equestrian drill team, has been memorializing 9/11 for the past five years. “It’s a way for me to do something without coming across as celebrating it,” she said. Dressed in red, white and blue, Phillips rode with her friend for the first time. “There was so much unity after the tragedy that everyone stuck together, and we’ve kind of lost that,” she said. “So, I think riding down the street, people look at us and remember and they appreciate it.” Added Phillips: “That morning is vivid in my memory. I remember exactly what was going on. Watching it on TV, getting angry at a common enemy. “Everybody was hugging each other. New Yorkers were looking at each other. Everybody was appreciating the first-responders. I was in such awe. “I can’t believe it’s been 18 years. That’s a lifetime, almost. I could have an adult child. “It feels good to do this.”

Power cut to 1,400 sites

Staff Report rescent City Fire and Rescue responded to a downed powerline at the corner of B and 9th streets at 2:20 p.m. Thursday that left more than 1,400 Crescent City residents without power, said Pacific Power. A tree limb struck a telephone wire that caused it to spark and ignite a small fire on a patch of grass in an empty lot across the street. The fire burned for about five minutes before the fire department

ur recently-hired reporters in Crescent City and Brookings are now hitting their stride, providing increasingly relevant coverage of the activities and residents in Country Media’s two new communities. Your ongoing positive feedback underscores that. Speaking of which, beginning with this issue we’ll be slowly expanding the A Section of each newspaper to allow more space for local news. To accomplish that, we’re sharply reducing the amount of “canned” syndicated features leaned on by the former owners of The Pilot and The Triplicate, using that space for more staff-written stories about people and events in Crescent City, Brookings and surrounding areas. So you’ll no longer be seeing generic filler such as advice columns, comics, word puzzles and the like. If we can’t fit in everything, we opt to give priority to news of the local area. As a great fan of Sudoku, I admit I gave this a lot of thought, but I have several books of Sudoku puzzles and can go to internet sites to download puzzles or play online. So, there are alternative sources. I believe our community newspapers’ columns are better suited to carrying as much local news as possible. Why? Because local news is our stock in trade here in Brookings and Crescent City. You won’t get that commitment to local coverage from anyone other than The Pilot and The Triplicate. You can get syndicated features from a variety of other suppliers. Meantime, we’re continuing our search for local fishing columnists. Our pressroom manager is a passionate fisherman and I asked him to write a column about his time on the water. Running our big presses is his day job … but writing articles isn’t something he was so sure about. I suggested he write as though he were drafting me a letter. You’ll see his brief anecdote in this issue of the paper. I hope you enjoy it. (That said, he elects to stick with running our presses as opposed to pursuing a literary career.) There are so many types of fishing opportunities in our corner of the world, perhaps we will begin getting columns from a variety of people. I hope deep-sea fishermen and fly fisherman are represented! As for our experiment with carrying reports on our websites of high school football games, many of you are More Local on Page A4

That effort includes portable electronic reader boards stationed along the route cautioning drivers to slow down, plus a media and public-outreach campaign. ODOT also has launched systemic safety improvements, including rumble strips at the Applegate River Bridge and in Cave Junction. The rumble strips are designed to alert drivers if they are veering off of the roadway. A “U.S. Highway 199 Stakeholder Working Group” has been established to seek long-term solutions, which might include development of a safety corridor along portions of the highway. Also planned are removing roadside obstacles, adding guardrails and protection barriers, and improving the side slope of the roadway to make it more recoverable in the event a vehicle runs off the road. That project will be funded at $435,885. A pedestrian bridge is planned over Holton Creek in Kerby. Leaming said that over the past several years, other safety improvements have been made. “From mileposts 7 to 28, along about 21 miles of the highway,

Highway 199, which runs east into Oregon from U.S. Highway 101 just north of Crescent City, has become one of the deadliest corridors in Oregon, according to details released this week by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The study shows a persistent four traffic fatalities since June 1 on the highway itself, plus five fatal crashes off the highway along adjacent county roadways. The Highway 199 fatal crash rate has been as high as eight, in 2016, and as low as two, in 2014. It doesn’t seem to be improving. “We have struggled with this corridor for many years,” said ODOT public information officer Gary Leaming. “This is not a new problem with this highway, but we seem to have run into a breaking point this summer.” Highway 199 - the Redwood Highway - is a rural arterial that runs from I-5 in Grants Pass south and west to Crescent City. Nearly 42 miles of the 80-mile highway are in Oregon. ODOT considers the route a critical link for tourists and commuters, and it serves as a main street for numerous residents living along and off the highway. The ODOT report lists several causes for traffic crashes in the years January 2009-January 2018, including driving too fast for conditions, following too close and other driver errors. Road characteristics in those accidents range from straightaways to sharp curves. The times of the crashes include all days, with Monday being the worst. Crashes increase through the afternoon and into the evening. The months of May through the end of the calendar year see the most crashes, with July being the worst. The report shows drivers of all ages are involved, although 20to 29-year-olds are the predominant risk category. The most-sever accidents occur between Kerby and Cave Junction. “One of the things we are struggling with is personal responsibility dealing with the conditions,” Leaming said, “not being drunk, drugged or impaired. Many of the crashes have one or another of these elements.” Because of the ongoing, even increasing, fatality rate along Highway 199, ODOT has launched a new public-awareness campaign, partnering with city and county organizations

Do something to help us all combat suicide and save lives Dear Editor: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2017, more people in the U.S. died by suicide than in any previous year. Suicide was the second-leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds and 35- to 44-year-olds in California. This is particularly troubling along the Wild Rivers Coast, where there aren’t adequate behavioral-health professionals. We can wait around for the powers-to-be to find the

funding to make the necessary changes, or we can step up as individual citizens to do something about it. On Sept. 7, The Triplicate newspaper included a 16page, four-color insert titled “Suicide Awareness and Prevention: Finding Hope,” that is filled with information, warning signs, and what to do when you notice a change in a friend, neighbor, colleague or family member, no matter how small. It encourages you to trust the signs, trust your gut and ask, “R U OK?” Let them know that it’s okay to say, “I’m not OK.” If that doesn’t work, and you’re having difficulty knowing what to say, check out the list at https://bit. ly/2SOU1la. It’s a Friday, and the boat is all fueled up and ready for an offshore adventure chasing albacore on Saturday. The alarm goes off at 3 and the day begins with a quick shower to wake up me up. Off to the boat we go, to finish up a few last-minute details icing the fish boxes, attaching drag straps and, of course, getting the rods in the proper positions. Now it’s 4:45, and me and my two fishing partners leave the slip to follow another fishing buddy out. He has radar, which is a big plus when running in the dark. We’re heading out 17 miles to the warm, blue water in which albacore had been caught over the past few days. An hour later, we have our gear in the water. Within a few minutes, four

rods bend over and drags start singing - looks like a promising day already! Three out of the four make it onto the deck, and we’re off and running. However, as most fisherman know, things can change in a hurry due to weather, current changes or just Mother Nature protecting her bounty. So as the day progresses, we score enough action to keep our interest and to hold us on the water until about 1 p.m., before heading in. When the spray settles, we have 22 on board and moving for port. There’s nothing quite like fishing the Blue Water in anticipation of hooking up with an albacore, pound for pound one of the best fighting fish out

To all those that supported me in my summer missionary endeavor. I have now returned from Saskatchewan, Canada, where I served for seven weeks at InterVarsity Circle Square Ranch, Wolf Creek. It was an amazing summer for me as I was given the opportunity to serve others in many different ways. I was granted the privilege of being a counselor for both junior age boys 6-9 years old and intermediate boys ages 8-11. It is really great to see these individuals respond to the Bible teaching and enjoying the various activities of the camp including a mini rodeo. I also was able to spend time working in the kitchen, serving as a daytime activity leader, and playing the keyboard for the evening rallies around the campfire. It has been truly incredible to see what God has done in the lives of the kids that came to camp this summer. Thank you once again. May God bless you as you have richly blessed me with your support. he search for Norbert Anthony (Tony) Danztman continues after the 89-year-old Crescent City man walked away from a motel Aug. 30 in Winter, Wisconsin and disappeared. His granddaughter, Haley Smith of Crescent City, has stayed in communications with Patricia Sanchez, the Sawyer County, Wisconsin, search and rescue coordinator and county emergency manager. Leads to Dantzmanâ€™s whereabouts have been few, said Smith, with the added challenge of separating rumors from viable tips. â€œThere has been nothing, literally nothing,â€? she said. â€œThere was a rumor he was found (that was) spreading here and in Wisconsin. But he was not found. (Sanchez) has been on rumor control.â€? Dantzman, who suffers from dementia, was attending a centennial family reunion in Winter when he walked away from his motel room. Smith set up a Facebook page â€” Missing Person - Tony Dantzman@bringtonydantzmanhome â€” to help spread the word of her grandfatherâ€™s disappearance and provide a central site for updates. As of Thursday, there were 497 likes for the page and 506 followers, with the Facebook page reaching a total of 135,741 people. â€œFor every one person who sees the page, 50 to 200 see and share it,â€? said Smith. â€œItâ€™s been awesome how much itâ€™s going out. Weâ€™re just trying to get the word out.â€? Smith said she remains in daily contact Sanchez. The Sawyer County Sheriffâ€™s Office said in a press release that extensive searches of the immediate area had been conducted utilizing ground surveillance,

All we need is that one good tip. â€œIt doesnâ€™t matter if you have all the technology and resources in the world, you can miss somebody,â€? said Sanchez. â€œI checked one grid area where the weeds were over my head. I tripped and got stuck. â€œSo, at this point, we canâ€™t rule out anything.â€? Smith added that she and other family members are weighing whether to fly to Winter to assist in the search.

The banners, created by the Del Norte chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, note that Sept. 1723 is Constitution Week. Del Norte Office Supply, 240 I St., was one of first locations to post a banner in their window. “I was happy to put up their banner,” said store owner Deb Stover. “DAR does a lot in the community. “They promote education, give out scholarships, and even got a plaque dedicated to Rocky Peterson at Peterson Park, a Del Norte boy who got killed on the Arizona,” said Stover, referring to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941 that sank four Navy battleships, including the USS Arizona. Past president General Gertrude S. Carraway drafted the first resolution for the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, in 1955. After it passed both houses of Congress, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued his proclamation on Aug. 19, 1955. The following year, Constitution Week was signed into law as an annual observance. Del Norte DAR regent Liz Freeman said the banners in Crescent City are meant to re-energize interest in the U.S. Constitution. “What we’re trying to do is make people more aware of it, study it, know their constitutional rights and why we’re so free,” Freeman said. The Del Norte DAR was formed in 2009 and

Projects of the county’s DAR have included cleaning and preserving local monuments, and repainting headstones in the Veterans Cemetery on East Cooper Avenue. The local chapter also was instrumental in raising funds to acquire the last 500 acres of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, located off U.S. Highway 199 near Hiouchi, for establishment of a World War II memorial there. And the Del Norte DAR offers annual $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Freeman said that this year, enough money has been raised for three such scholarships. In addition, she said, the DAR will be contributing pocketbook copies of the Constitution to schools as part of next week’s celebration. “We’d love to see teachers become more aware of Constitution Week and make it a part of their curriculum,” she said. Looking ahead, the Del Norte DAR plans to join Wreaths Across

America, with a goal of selling wreaths for $15, made in Maine, to place at all of the national cemeteries across the U.S. Locally purchased wreaths will be placed

OBITUARIES Crescent City, California. Throughout her working career, she tried many things until she became a teachers’ aid at Pine Grove Elementary. Lou did that for 18 years until she retired. She loved children and the excitement they had when they learned something new. In her spare time, Lou and Tom would be riding horses and any chance they got you could find them on the beach or at the Bald Hills at a horse camp. Lou was a devout Christian who loved participating in church functions, vacation bible school and youth church camp. She read her bible every day and tried every day to be the best version of herself. Lou was a Tolowa Native American belonging to the Elk Valley Rancheria. She was involved in the tribal government and cultural activities.

Lou loved going to the fish camps and eating fish that was prepared the traditional way. Lou will be remembered fondly and lovingly by all her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband Tom, sister Pansy, daughter Linda, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family only graveside service at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 28th at the Elk Valley Rancheria Cemetery. month after a fall and was never able to make a full recovery. He was an active member of St Joseph’s Church and served as a sachristarian there for many years. He served as a ordained minister at St. Dominic Savio church for many years. He was a telephone installer for many years for Western Electric, AT&T, Lucent technologies. Hubert was a Naval Veteran. He was a Boy scout leader for troop 37 in Bellflower, Ca. He was an active AARP member and Knights of Columbus member.He belonged to the Holy Name Society of Bellflower, Ca. He was also a CCD teacher for many years. He loyally donated to Catholic Extensions, Sacred Heart Missions, Shriners Hospital, St Joseph and St Dominic Savio parishes. Ruonavaara said he was in his house when he heard an explosion and looked out to see the fire starting across the street. By the time Crescent City Fire and Rescue arrived, residents had put out most of the fire using garden hoses, said Del Norte County Sgt. Gene McManus, who was on the scene directing traffic. Pacific Power arrived to shut down the electricity. Interim Fire Chief Bill Gillespie warned residents not to go near any downed power lines until Pacific Power confirmed it

was safe. A number of residents and businesses immediately lost power. Local banks closed their doors, while other businesses took to Facebook or made phone calls regarding the outage. Courtni Vanlandingham, owner of Enoteca, a restaurant and bar on 3rd Street, said the outage almost completely halted business there for the afternoon. With no backup generator, she said, she could not serve warm foods nor open her coolers for fear the goods inside would spoil. “My cook was cooking a cheeseburger, which didn’t go very far, but luckily we only had two tables because we had gotten through our lunch rush,” Vanlandingham said. “We’ll have to close the doors for (Thursday) night because as

soon as it starts getting dark, we can’t do anything, which is gonna’ kinda’ be sucky, because we have trivia (games) tonight.” Although most downtown businesses were affected, Johnston’s Gift Garden Home next to Enoteca experienced no loss of power, which generally was restored downtown about 4 p.m. Many of the residents closer to the downed line didn’t receive power until nearly 6 p.m. McManus said that when Fire and Rescue released him at 4:30 p.m., Pacific Power was still working on restoring power to the city. ‘Bike the Rogue’ draws from Oregon, California eventy-eight riders from across Oregon and northern California gathered Sept. 7 at Buffington Park in Gold Beach for the 10th-annual “Bike the Rogue” event. Riders could choose from one of four scenic routes offered in the cycling event. Thirty-eight riders completed the 25-mile route, heading east along the south bank of the Rogue River, crossing Lobster Creek Bridge, and returning to Gold Beach along the north bank of the river. Fourteen cyclists rode the 40-mile route, which included an 8-mile stretch through ranch land, and 11 miles along

the ocean with views of sea stacks and sandy beaches. Twenty-one metric-century (62.2 miles) cyclists rode an extended version of the 40-mile route, adding an additional 22.5 miles east along the Rogue River. And four die-hard riders completed the challenging 100-mile route, including Charles Mahaffy of Coos Bay, who turns 80 years old in January 2020. The youngest rider this year was 14 years old, the oldest 95. All riders were treated to a warm welcome across the finish line. That included free beer, provided at cost to the event by locally owned Arch Rock Brewing, and a free wood-oven-

fired pizza, all included as part of each cyclist’s entry fee. While enjoying their personal pizzas, James and Frances Maunder of Eureka, California said this was their first time in the Gold Beach event. They’ve participated in numerous bike rides throughout the U.S., and said “Bike the Rogue’s” metric-century route along the Rogue River and the Pacific Ocean is now their favorite. They purchased unbranded clothing, created their initial designs, and began branding t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts. That first year, they sold maybe 500 shirts. Today, they said they sell thousands.

Most of their designs involve Crescent City sites and history. Many of them include BigFoot, the Fog Banks mascot. Some designs showcase tsunami waves, others feature the redwoods or an ocean sunset. Beyond simply selling clothes, the trio said they aim

to stimulate good works, too. “We want to inspire people to do better things,” said Victor, “and if we can do it through shirts and hoodies, then there you go.” Fog Bank Clothing recently donated sweatshirts and t-shirts for an auction in support of a local teenager battling leukemia.

and encouraging youth – a passion he said he carried through his time as principal at Mary Peacock and Pine Grove elementary schools, and a nine-year tenure at Crescent Elk Middle School in Crescent City. Teaching will always be his passion, he said, although that’s now in the form of his writings, rather than standing in a classroom. “Teaching is amazing and I love it,” he said. “But I get to teach everyday now… I learn from everybody, and I hope I share something with everybody.” What now, for Hartwick? He said he doesn’t know. He plans to hit the road in his Cadillac and promote his book wherever he stops. Beyond that, he can’t say.

hree friends have merged their entrepreneurial spirit and a love of Crescent City. The result is Fog Bank Clothing. The business was formed three years ago to sell exclusively Del Norte County-themed t-shirts, sweatshirts and accessories. Joe Hanks, Tommy Burley and Fred Victor, Fog Bank Clothing’s co-owners, had talked for years about starting some type of business. They didn’t know precisely what that business would be – just that they wanted it to be something meaningful. Then, Hanks called Burley and Victor with an idea: a clothing company with designs specifically featuring Del Norte County and Crescent City themes. “[Joe] kind of sold me on the idea that there’s not a true Del Norte County brand,” Burley said. “’Let‘s be the first, let’s have the niche market.’” It took them three weeks to come up with a name for their business. Hanks was driving down the coast and noticed a clouded sky hovering over

Although they’d like to operate a storefront someday, right now they’re marketing products through booths at farmers markets, fairs and other community events, as well as on social media and their website. Their clothing can be picked up at the Mail Room in Crescent City. Yes, they hope Fog Bank will provide them with full-time jobs at some point, but they say their top priority today is giving back to Del Norte County’s residents. Or, as Victor put it, “The end goal is run Fog Bank full time, and help out the community full time.”

illy Hartwick laid on the floor of his hotel room in mid-2018, a gun in his mouth. He thought he wanted his life to end. Just over a year later, Hartwick has returned to his hometown of Crescent City. He seems a changed man. He sports longer hair, pulls his belt tighter, wears a wide smile. And he carries with him 1,000 copies of his newly published book, “The Invisible Backpack.” An assortment of rhythmical writing, it details the joys and trials of his life, including his battle with Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary body movements and, often, blurted obscenities. The book is dedicated to those who have succumbed to suicide. In May 2018, Hartwick abruptly left his position as principal of Pine Grove Elementary School in Crescent City after a mental breakdown that left him feeling hopeless. He said he had been unable to deal with the medication he was taking for Tourette’s, especially when mixed with alcohol. Hartwick was spiraling downward, losing his zest for life and acting in ways he regrets. After three near-suicide attempts and a stay in a psychiatric ward, he checked himself in to a mental health treatment center in New Mexico, where he said he began to heal.

27 years filling its 200 pages. The book, which has no numbered pages, flows “chronologically backwards,” beginning with recent experiences and ending with his early life. His book’s title refers to Hartwick’s belief that every person carries emotional baggage from hurts they have experienced. They carry a heavy burden of often-unseen trauma. He said he hopes his book inspires others to offload those “invisible backpacks.” With a sweet forward written by his mom, the book takes a deeply personal look into Hartwick’s life, from his love of teaching to the toll of his bouts with suicidal ideation. In his writings, Hartwick also explains his love of teaching
